Former Zambia Air Force (ZAF) Commander Christopher Singogo has been sentenced to six years imprisonment with hard labour.

Lieutenant General Singogo has been convicted on two counts of charges of theft by public servant and abuse of authority of office.

On the first count General Singogo has been convicted on charges of theft by public servant contrary to section 272 and 277 of the law of Zambia.

On the second count the former ZAF commander has been convicted on charges of abuse of authority of office contrary to section 37 and 41 of the Anti Corruption Commission Act of 1996.

He will serve the sentence concurrently.

Chief Resident Magistrate Charles Kafunda delivered the sentence Monday afternoon.

Earlier, magistrate Kafunda sentenced General Singogo to eight years imprisonment with hard labour.

He however reduced the sentence to six year’s after mitigation from the defense counsel.

Meanwhile General Singogo’s defense counsel has filed a notice of appeal.

The defense counsel comprising lawyers Kelvin Bwalya and Ganje Muhango also applied for bail.

Magistrate Kafunda however threw out the bail application, stating that there is no likelihood that the appeal will succeed.

And magistrate Kafunda has acquited General Singogo’s co-accused Captain Joseph Phiri.

Magistrate Kafunda alleged that General Singogo used deceptive means to buy two generators for the air force at a cost of K110 Million.

He said the former ZAF chief later installed the two generators at his private lodges in Livingstone and Lusaka.

  1. This is what happens when people think they are above the Law.
Please make sure that all the croooooks go and do some manual work at chimbs(chimbokaila)

  2. This is injustice. In all fairness the sentence is too harsh. Its very selective also. The judiciary in Zambia leaves a lot to be desired.

  3. well deserved. This people were stealing at the expense of development. i am now praying to see Fred Chiluba follow his colleagues. it will be nice to have chiluba reconvene with his old friends in prison.

  4. this is gud news indeed,nw we need to hear th@ pompwe mwine mwine also has been jailed, noti ifi tumfwa fye ati his be flown out for specialist treatment pa SA nangu shani.infact he shld be treated pa UTH..these people used to think like zambia was there company nangula ifamu lyabo, nomba tayapa..magistrate kafunda twatasha…nw we need more successful sentences to the remaining ba pompwe.

  5. What justice? every single Zambian government official is freaking corrupt. You bring down one guy, you think next guy is going to be clean?

  6. When is Chiluba going to go into prison also? This tells me, all security wings have bosses who are so corrupt. All of them are appearing in court with no exception at all. SHAME!!!
Anna Chifungula (Auditor General), please go and audit these climinals: Zaf, Army, ZNS, SHUSHUSHU. They are all auditable.

  7. Welcome to the super dupper tupa unchiki unchiki test of life!:o Pazed napawama. Lock them up … so the know we are not to be messed around with!!:)>-

  9. Fellow country men and women, this is yet another victory for all law abiding Zambians. There is no place for plunderes in this country.Am sweeping this country clean. The next are FTJ.Kayumba,Musengule, two chungus ,Beene, Kabwe, Sibande, katele zuma kalumba, mabenga , RB the list is endless.Am also directing the Task Force and ACC to probe all the Generals currently on contracts and those who had just their contracts terminated. Most of these are thieves.

  11. Dont celebrate too much,2morrow it might be you, sometimes someone piles skeletons in the closet without knowing. So anyone can have piles of skeletons in one way or another. My prayers goes to the guys family :((

  12. #Boxing mwale. We are not celebrating anything all we are saying is that justice has been done and the would offenders must take extra care

The Bear is too cold. Nine Chale iwe , Snow is melting… Its about time. I can not even take my Girl for a walk. Chi Weather Baaaaaaaaaaaaad

  14. Get Chiluba and his tandem of thieves. All these generals were mere students in Chiluba;s thieving game. Anyway, let him save his sentence and hopefully he will reflect. He also has the option of volunteering information about Chiluba and other thieves he knows and may be we can consider reducing his sentence a little.

  15. What about the wives of JR officers he used to Fu…….k? Officers, sue him for marriage interferance and adultery so that other sentences follow him to prison and let him rot there. He had bad manners

  16. What will happen with the acquitted Captain? Will be reinstated back and compensated for the humiliation, social distress and indeed other associated issues.

  17. This is the work of late Mwanawasa. When ever he differed with some one on professional issues, then corruption charges were slap on that person. This General was a Professional Man, not a yes man like others. We will see what will happen when Mwanawasa immunity is removed, all his people will go to jail. Mwanawasa oil scandle will be prosecuted to the logical conclusion. We are also waiting to prosecute all Zambian Airways Directors and Shareholders. Akatashi takalisha. Well done Fube for defending the good General

  18. Am off to bed now, gudnite bloggers and enjoy blogging. Abo fyakuifwaila. Maestro you should received Jesus as your personal saviour. 20. Ladies and Gents, iam highly disappointed with people who are asking the Govt to move in and bail out Zambian Airways. I do appreciate that it is biggest air line in Zambia and the loss of jobs this will cause. However, I do not share the same views that it should be bailed out. This is because the air line is a private company which has not been operating in a professional manner. If it was not for the late president, the air line would have gone under a long time ago.I know that aviation industry has been going through a rough time worldwide and Govts do not bail them out. Zambian Airways should restructure and market themselves well.

  21. #41, NK. How could he have been a good general if the facts before the courts are what he used to do? Where on earth can you pay K4m for cutting a mango tree? Where on earth can you pay K120m for erecting a dancing floor? Countrymen, where on earth can someone grab govt generators and use them at his lodges? Please let LPM’s soul rest in peace and stop mudslinging. The man openned your eyes on what damage Chiluba and his tandem of theives were doing. Theft is theft and there is no other word for it. Let us wait for FTJ to join Singogo.

  22. ISOKA

  30. Chewe, I am praying for you. Your insults are a clear way of the devil and I am wondering why someone who insults can instruct me who does not insult to accept Jesus Christ.

You should check yourself Chewe before you cause all people think that you are a joker.

You must go back to the thread where you issued insults on me and president HH AND APOLOGISE or better still confess to God on your bad behaviour here on LT.

I know you can change and I will help you in all possible ways includings the above mentioned prayers for you. Be blessed and give up insulting.

  31. Chewe go and double check your insults on the following thread instead of trying to sho yourself as a clean individual in this new thread where you have run to:

    w w w . lusakatimes. com/ ? p = 7264

You insult people and yet you want to tell me who has never insulted anyone on LT to accept Jesus Christ whom I have clearly accepted as I follow in His steps. Jesus Christ stood for the TRUTH and He never insulted anyone like you did in the referred to thread. This conduct of Jesus Christ is exactly what I have stood for.

I thus challenge you to quote just one insult and its source that you think I have ever written on LT to add beaf to your so-called advice on #43 above. All the best.

  32. Zambia has been a peaceful country mainly due to the compliant military force. The corruption that became inherent in the Chiluba led Government has made honourable Generals now being reduced to criminals. This is not healthy for a country like ours. One must not forget that these Generals have led soldiers that may still be loyal to them. One would have thought that the best way to handle them was through the military courts and possibly make them pay back what they had taken. My premise is that these honourable men turned as a result of the bad Commander in Chief they had. Lets see the big picture and release these Generals.

  33. at least he won’t turn into someone’s wife in jail, afterall he’s a soldier!look @ it as second round of military training singongo!tough tits!!! :d:d:d

  34. let justice prevail and may LPM’s soul rest in peace for bringing back sanity in our government. one zambia one nation. :d

  35. #70, when they show remorse after the conviction, yes we can pardon them but it should really be a pardon based on them showing remorse and changing to be good ambassadors against corruption in the defense forces. Greed is not the best way for a soldier’s life. Our soldiers have had it nice and there is no need for them to steal. They have never fought a war and they live within the community which is good for the country and have really good discipline. Why should the bosses be stealing like that. I know it is all Chiluba and his crooked life. But he also must be jailed. Period.

  36. No. 73. Agreed but it is not true that the soldiers are well looked after. If you follow the whereabouts of other retired Generals in the Kaunda days and the first term of Chiluba, most are either dead or living in abject poverty. Those minority that are living in comfort got away with it or rather the Executive turned a convenient blind eye. Look into it further and you will quickly come to the same conclusion that these Generals being persecuted must have angered someone very important.

  37. #74, the whole issue here is that Mwanawasa was NEVER personal with anybody- let us be honest. He was very very strict even with his own Children. Discipline and discipline is all he talked about. I knew him personally and I never got a personal favour for knowing him. He was simply an enforcer of laws and tried to help the country in that regard. These generals used to do things you cant imagine and who reported them to the authorities – their surbodinates who LPM listened to very much. Well, there is no need to cry over spilt milk, justice has been done and let us wait for Chiluba and Chungu to dance to the same music.

  38. Imwe ninshi ukuponta so?what type of a job do you think i do?am too educated to do the jobs you are talking about okay. So guys please respect yourselves. Mwakolongana ati Chewe this and that.Muichindike ka! Dont think if those are the jobs you do,then its everyone no.

  39. Justice has prevailed but Zambian judicial system needs to be revised so it can be applied on every one including the past admin. of LPM.

  40. THIS SHOULD NO JUST END HERE.WELL DONE THA JUDCIALY.ANNOINTED BY SATAN OR DEVIL AS A PLUNDEREROR NOT .YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR YOUR SINS.KAFUPI AND HIS MINNIONS MUST ALSO GO THE SAME WAY.IMPUPU NI MPUPU.KWENA TWACHULA NAIMWE MWE MPUUPU.

  41. It’s a pity I know somebody in Australia will have some coming down to earth to do. What goes around comes around

  42. This Corruption fight should extend to embassies becuase we are sick and tired of these embassy crooks not representing the interests of Zambian people. Kuba maningi

  43. It is good to see the people who pillaged our country as though it was their own back yard get served. When Justice vists it feels like meeting a friend “long time no see”.

  44. Merit should go to Judge Charles Kafunda for being worth his salt.
Men judges are not men enough to make decisions hence the delay in cases, its not the law. And some of these cases that are growing cold feet should be handled by a jury to speed up the cases and save taxpayers money. Thanks Judge Kafunda. Hope this inspires other judges. Hope to mother ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!

  45. The Chinda-Law Associatio is excited with the development.
But one thing is missing in the conviction. Gen. Singogo was(is)running a cleaning company in located in Rhode Park.On what ground was it awarded the contract to be cleaning ZAF premises?
    The Chinda-Law Association.(We know Everything).
    Upcoming President.

  46. Napapata Fellow Zambians. I liberated u from monopartism and I did my best to ensure every Zambian has got access to personal business & development. I know and am aware that my administration made mistakes here and there but let us not talk loudly on sophisticated matters of this kind where u have got no truth about the allegations being levelled against me. Yes, if truly am a thief, the law shall take its cause but if am innocent, justice shall prevail and I shall remain as free as I am. I thank u abundantly for everything u have written about me and that God Almighty may open up your eyes to see things the real way. (FTJ)

  47. Mukwai?

Ba Chewe mwachilaginta pa # 50. Refer to # 43 “Am off to bed now, gudnite bloggers and enjoy blogging”
I went on to ask why you were retreating to bed so early @ 2:30 pm coz you and I are both in Obama land? I tried adding 2-3 hrs in case you are in the north or south part but it puzzled me that you hit the sack so early. Was is a siesta?

  48. This witch hunting will plunge Zambia in deep chaos even those that support it will follow their leader Levy wherever he is. Probably hell.

  49. I hope this standard will apply to all citizens, way to go zambian justice system!!! Bonse must be held accountable……….

  50. EVELYN KING.

    MATWORLD-NICE GUY.
INE NINE ULEBA AT IWE NAMAYO, ULEKWATA UMUSHINSHI WEMWANA IWE. IAM A MOTHER OF TWO.

Iam sure you remember these words.Iam so sorry that I offended you yeterday, but to tell you the truth I was not reffering to you as iwe namayo,my comment was based on what the director of tourism said about how ZA will affect tourism.I couldnt sleep coz I was troubled not because you told me that Nshakwata mucinshi, but coz of making you utter those words. though my comment was not for you,but The lady(Director of tourism) if she saw my comment would have used the same words as yours.please get it from me and God is my witness that comment was not for you.Iam sorry.

  51. Goodmorning Zambians (German Time)!!! THIS PLATFORM SEEMS TO BE THERAPY FOR SOME. MOST OF THE THINGS YOU PIPS POST HERE YOU WILL NEVER EVEN SAY IN FRONT OF BAPONGOSHI!! OTHERWISE THEY WILL JUST TAKE THERE DAUGHTERS AWAY AND GIVE YOU BACK YOUR ZED SHILLINGS OR WICHTEVER MEANS OF PAYMENT YOU USED. NAYA KUNCHITO AND WARM UP MY PC AT WORK 😮

  52. 6 years for generators? Very harsh sentence. Considering the amoutn of corruption in Africa, guilty or not, I think the General had political enemies

  53. Matworld-Nice Guy

I am sure ba Evelyn has 4given you. Now I know we have christians here. When one can not find peace becoz of what he/she said or did, it shows how committed to God you are. Brother let not what disturbed you yesturday spoil yo day even today. I pray that God gives you peace in this day.

Evelyn King! Please sis talk to our brother. He has asked for 4giveness.

  54. Patrick,6 yrs is fair.We should also look at the value of the generators(they were hi-tec)and also other fraudulent transactions cutting a Mango tree incurrig labor cost amounting to K4m(thats a joke). To me,its a good deterrent to would be offenders including me.

  55. Its a good step for a start, but it be applied to every one.Its a lesson to the current commanders not abuse their offices. :d

  56. =d>=d>=d>=d>**== Let them pay for they sins who is next,Judge you are wasting a lot of time ,these guys have to be jailed weare wait for chiluba and the friends,The Jail rooms will be finished.:)>- One by one getting in the Jail=))

  57. Matworld
Ati shani Mwemfumu?. Nimbona mwadandauka sana pali ba Evelyn King coz you have been apologising since yesterday and iam sure immediately she sees your apology, she will acknowledge her forgiveness.

    Ba Evelyn King

Please forgive Matworld. He is not the way you portrayed it and sure sure you will come to acknowledge this.

  58. Intelligentia,
Your contributions are very pertinent and the analytical depth admirable. I have always believed abena Zed have an inherent knuck for analyzing issues. However, others willfully choose to be ignorant. James 4:17.
The bottom line is crime does not pay. And to whom much (in terms of responsilibity) is given, much is expected (accountability). Responsilbility and Accountability are inseparable whether in Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, etc.
Meanwhile, laugh not General Singogo. Life has its TWISTS and TURNS.

  59. Check the POST.Another ZAF commander(Sande Kayumba) is on self defence.Soon the two generals who at one time occupied the same office willshare the same jail cell.Lessons to be learnt.

  60. This is welcome news.
But, what about Chiluba, the mastermind of all these crimes?
Many more must go in so that those who come after them should think TWICE before engaging in criminal activities.
This country is just too soft on criminals.
That is why foreigners like the Chinese, some Indians etc come here to commit crime.
They are afraid of tough laws against crime in their own coutries.
    Zambia, wake up!

  61. According to the Zambian judicial system, an accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty. To this effect, Kayumba, FTJ and the rest of them must be treated as such. Not that we do not know what they did while in office. Some of us were even witnesses to the same alleged crimes. However, we need to move cautiously because most cases are won and lost on legal technicalities even where it is apparent that a crime was committed. This will save us a lot of heartache should it happen.

  62. LT please check your grammar:’Magistrate Kafunda alleged that Gen Singogo abused…..” How can he sentence the Gen on mere allegations?

  63. I see a lot of emotionalism and sensationalism in the call for FTJ and his cronies to be crucified. Let the cases be prosecuted. It may be easy to prosecute FTJ and others and not so much Chungu because of the nature of intelligency (security) operations. A line will have to be drawn between endangering national security against establishing the facts. Quite a tricky thing to do. Chungu might just get away with it.

  64. Big lesson also for some lawyers.
We have too many lawyers defending known criminals just for the loot.
    Where are your morals?
Some lawyers are involved with the worst of criminals and claim they are trying to uphold justice – they will defend anyone for the money – even FTJ – a thief without equal and whose crimes have shreded this country into pieces.

  65. It is time to pray for those corrupt chaps in government who have turned the resources of this country into personal coffers. I mean its actually a hustle just to be enlisted as an officer Cadet in ZAF because of these corrupt generals they had rather enlist their children or those who have something to pay them. Anyway shame from being a top security man to a convict. ^:)^

  66. Wiseman,
I too find it hard to understand the morality of law sometimes. For example, A known criminal is made to get a lighter sentence all because some ‘good lawyer’ represented him/her. Where is their morality and justice here?

  67. Sharp Shooter

Ine nshilibwino Mudala,You know offending pipo is not even on the list of my hobbies.Iam really troubled that I offended an innocent soul of GOD though the comment was not for her.Otherwise Imwe kana besa mulishani uko?

    Tionge,
Thank you so much my dear for all what you have said.Gob Bless you.

  68. What goes around comes around. Singogo convened a Kangaroo Court Marial which convicted me many years ago in ZAF and all my pleas for the Commander to exercise his powers were thrown to the dust bin. This sentence serves him good and i want him to feel what i felt. Good, the magistrate must be promoted to beconme Judge in place of the late Japhet Banda so that he may take over the pending corruption cases of FTJ, Sande Kayumba and the rest.

It first started with Former Inspector General of Police Crispin Katukula who store a steering unit of a Police Belmont car. He was jailed for 3 years. Then came General Funjika of ZNS over raincoats, and now its Singogo over generaters. Whos next?:d/:d/

  69. Gud morning 2u all, i missed u all.
Coming to the topic,if i may ask wen did Singogos case start 4them to be blowing trumpets that he will be 4 six years concurrently, wth hard labor my foot.As far as i knw,if am nt mistaken aswel, his cases strted along tym ago and maybe he wil only serve the jail sentence for 3months ninshi 6years yakwana. He wil be out running his WANE and WASINGO Lodges peacefuly nama Gensets aibile.

  70. OKay here is where the crunch lies. You see, the problem in Zambia is that we try to implement things that we hear people talk about without an indepth understanding of what these things are. I am talking about things as DEMOCRACY, FREE MARKET, CAPITALISM etc. Only yesterday, I came across someone saying capitalism is synonymous with corruption. No not at all. What we have in Zambia are plural elections and not democracy. Elections are just but a fraction of what it takes to implement all the tenets of democracy. Democracy in poverty always degerates into anarchy, just like capitalism is butressed on principles such as individualism, respect for other human beings and the

  71. #135 Real Brain, it is the thieves who are giving capitalism a bad name. that is why sending them to jail will cleanse it of scum and it will be clean again.

  72. environment and generally a means of protecting a few wealthy people who toiled genuinely for their money and are able to distribute part of their wealth to a large number of have nots. This concept started during the 13 states of the USA with Virginia at the fore front. It was wealthy farmers to be specific who were targets of the majority poor farm workers. The free market concept has just been disproved to be effective as a stand alone tool of propagating capitalism. We have seen how the credit crunch has embarassed proponents of this system. So bane, lets get back and stop corruption, build our own governance system based on our historical and cultural background and so on.

  73. @133 ZOE,
Singogo was not in Remand Prison. He was on bail, meaning that he will serve the full term, i.e 6yrs. He will be in for six years with effect from yesterday! No backdating!!!

  74. thats the saddest thing i have heard this year.he is a good man corruption or not.all of zambia is corrupt.please they just want to embarass him.i know what i am talking about.

  75. Chiluba will never go into Prison. Ala mwebantu, naba Mwanawasa bane, imfwa eyaba puswishe am sorry to say. nowonder Chilba’s cases are not bearing fruit. RB knows well that if Chiluba goes in, he is second. when in power people dont realise that they are making offences – you know giving orders even when you know its wrong. pa last ni so che. **==

  76. It is good news for once and one wonders if the trend will continue even to the bigger fishes.I doubt tho because nyamasoya is corrupt and has already benefited

  77. Poor man, i feel sorry for one college in town which is run by a widow who singogo was shagging. From the time he was suspended and eventually lost his job, that college has stopped running outside workshops which the lady used to do with the help of Singogo. This is the time that woman is supposed to be by his side, but knowing women, she is keeping her distance, thinking the college will be visited by the law

  78. Sorry bloggers, the college mentioned in #151 is in Lusaka, right in town. Does anyone know anything about this.

And one other thing, ba Chewe, you seem to be a nice person, can we be friends.
