ZESCO Limited managing Director, Rhodnie Sisala, has been relieved of his duties.

The newly appointed ZESCO board announced in Lusaka on Thursday that it has with immediate effect terminated Mr. Sisala’s contract.

The board has meanwhile appointed Director of Power Rehabilitation and Generation projects at ZESCO, Musonda Chibulu, as acting Managing Director.

He said the position of ZESCO Managing Director will be advertised.

Ok. One campaign message for the Undereducate has been cleared for MMD has no worries about this it any more.

As for Mr Sisala, someone said”what goes up must always come down” and I wish you all the very best in your future activities.

  2. OK, the boss has been fired but what does this mean? No more load shedding? Improved performance? If the new manager can’t do the job better, reprimand him too.

  3. There we are, RB is purging the whole pride that Mwanawasa left so that he is bring in his cronies who he is going to share the loot with

  4. This is the easy part. The true test shall be the manner in which the next Managing Director shall be appointed and whether or not he will begin the long awaited transformation of ZESCO Limited. The problems at ZESCO are sizeable and will require decisive leadership in overcoming them including weathering the storm of unpopularity that will no doubt come with the required decisions…..

  5. rodny sisala is my uncle. ask siame the driver how many of us he has employed with or with out papers. now that he is gone, we will remain but afraid that we might lose our jobs seeing that we can’t even perform. we fail to work because of uncle sisala who gives us support. but now that he has been relived we are yet to know more about his dealings at zesco…. the family farm

  6. “He said the position of ZESCO Managing Director will be advertised.” This is very good news I wish it could apply to all parastatal companies. I will start updating my curriculum vitae

  7. Systematically GRZ is being sanitized of the family tree hegemony.Tender Board free of Kapitolo, ZNBC Director General Joseph Salasini, DEC Peter Chingaipe, ZAWA chief, BOZ a number of Directors and now ZESCO freed. Its also good to hear that all Foreign Missions have taken a mop with incompetent Maureen appointed unqualified family members all recalled.I advise Qualified Zambians keen to serve to go forward and serve the country. There are many foreign missions opportunities lining up.All those recalled will be out by end of this year. Its time for a professional Diplomatic Corp.

  8. Any one agree we have been here before? Typical trend. New President new personell. I am not supprting Sisala but surely the problems at ZESCO do not solely lie on an individual. After all, decisions at made at State house.

  9. All i can say is bye bye. I know the man personally and he is such a nice guy from my perspective

  10. Such positionz are never permanent. In fact they shud only be for 2-4 yearz contract. Adios Mr Sisala.

  11. Good bye Mr. R Sisala, have no bitter feelings coz your contract expired on 31/03/09. At you will be going back to Copperbelt Energy Company where you are a Director. As Mr. Chibulu to confirmed oil the Board of Directors with herfty allowances then they will confirm you. Even if the job of MD will be advertised Zesco’s problems are far from over. The work culture of the entire workforce has to change. There is need to refocus the work culture of zesco employees from the lowest to the highest position.

  12. Ala imwe bane, How can you fire Sisala, when ZESCO United has qualified to the Group stage of the Championship cup? Are you sure its not the ZAF commander whose Red Arrows failed to go for the group stage, who is supposed to be relieved of his duties? What has such a humble looking man done this time around?

  13. Sisala, good riddance bad something. How some of you can sympathise with the man is beyond me. He was saying that the increased electricty tariff will not hurt us? Was he serious or chizungu chinanipita? Otherwise am back. Hello everyone

  14. Sisala has been very good in terms of running Zesco except for his huge loans buying houses and flats making accommodation expensive in Kitwe

  15. Well Mr Sisala, I was your fan in early days but hearing all that is going on I would like to say bye bye polio. Despite that being the fact, I am worried about one thing. HE? Worries me a lot. My good friend wiseman reborn would say wonders never cease. Have you watched Zambia’s top Soap Kabanana? There is a character called Patrick Kabanana, he is not different from HE. Wa ma blunder. You will hear on this new appointment of Zesco MD, that adverstisement is just for formality. Watch this!!!!

  16. WoW!!.. What happened to the lights? I am not sure i know much about this guy but all i cna say that ZESCO is a mis managed company but iam happy to hear that they are going to advertise the job. Only hope that a person who is qualified and can stand his grounds will be hired not a person who is planted there and can not argue or make a case with higher officials whne they ask him to charge customers ridiculously in order to meet the so called ‘Targets’. Electricity is a must have for everyone in the country not a privilege.. therefore make it affordable for everyones budget, it is sad to see other people with no power because of non payments those should be the last options and as extreme measues, work with your customers to meet their budgets. Good luck in hiring a new guy.. who will

  17. understand the issues Zesco faces will put in necessary measures to fix the power problems that the country was facing instead of the lodge shading; when in actaul fact you are exporters of power. We need people who are solution oriented.

  18. #25 Chips fimo fimo. I agree with you totally. There is a lot of gabbage at Zesco. The work culture is something else. I think we need change in Zambia, who can propose a different policy of appointing MD’s for paratastals so that we get competent people? Just advertising is not enough. There is suppose to be proper scrutiny and after the appointment, the honest people responsible must be very sure beyond any reasonable doubt that the person appointed is the right candidate. Thats why Zamtel is falling, Tazara, Napsa MD fired. The biggest problem we have is that people appointed to work in Parastals are the same who worked in UNIP but times have changed and they are not moving with time. Viva Change

  19. For those in the know, how will this affect Zesco’s performance. Was Sisala a hindrance or bottlenect in teh delivery of service to the nation.

I hope consumers will get a better service when the new MD comes in otherwise we may be applying the wrong medicine to the problem.

We need to move away from knee jerk action. I hope the new board took a sober assessment of teh sitiuation and came up with the conclusion that it is in the best interest of the nation, not theirs.

  20. Sad for the family tree that it is being upooted. But for Sisala its good decission coz wanted to make lives of Zambians so difficult. Bye bye polio. Amen

  21. Whilst this may be a good decision which has been taken load shedding will not end immediately.Loading shedding will stop in 2014 as thats when the last of the planned power sation will be completed and fully fuctional. He could have been fired as probably he didnt work as a good manager in terms of managing the company operations. One one side this might be a good thing for our beloved country on the other end its sad for him and espcially to have to start looking for a job.He should have had some forsight when people were calling for him to be fired. He should have resigned to keep up with a good name. But now i think it might be tough for him.I can imagine his famiy “dady you have been fired!”the wife “sweety you should have resigned i told you earlier”

  22. #36 Need Change, Nu Begining in Z Although it is good that Sisala has been gotten rid of,it won’t bring the change u want because even The so called President himself is from the UNIP era infact he’s almost a century old,it’s the voters & all those eligible to vote but don’t vote that we should be blaming for the current leadership crises in govt & parastatals. The MD’s position at ZESCO has always been political,ZESCO has always funded successive ruling govts so the President has a role in choosing the MD much that it’s a waste of time advertising the position as the successor ”has already been chosen” and in essence,it’s a waste of resources & time advertising & accomodating all those called for interviews & those interviewing the ”candidates”.

  23. Long awaited, good decision and I hope it is done in good faith because thats all what matters to me. the intention behind it will tell wether it is really a good decision or not.
mwalishibafye pa zed. chilamuntu na bakwe. and we have seen this attitude before and even in RBs reign.

  24. #42 I agree with you totally. I was NOT vivaling for change of Sisala, but political leadership in Zambia maybe you got me wrong there. We need new blood that is current, that will make decisions according to the times we are living in today. Not Sata, Not RB, Not HH. Need change and new beggining in Z.

  25. Finaly he is out. Infact, Sisala should have been relieved off his duties a long time ago. They should bring back Robby Mwansa. He was a very good man and managed ZESCO so very well. Now how is he going to pay back all those huge loans he gave himself? Yash pa zed. The govt should also investigate medical stores limited. There are a lot of irregularities one of the directors is doing such as taking his relatives there even when they have failed interviews, approving cash payments for his office refurbishments, buying new tires (including rims) for his personal car. Ministry of health should probe him.

  26. Change is necessary, sisala has been advocating increase in tariffs despite so many hardships.Weather is rich or not zesco does not belong to him.Now it time for BOZ governor to go coz even him hs failed to perform.Bye bye sisala.

  27. Very good ! These were the beneficiaries of the Lamba nonsence that LPM and Maureen brought during their reign. Go to any ZESCO office, its full of unqualified Lamba and family trees ! Bakuchita kapala !

  28. Long overdue. The nut made a mess of Zesco. He never had the heart for the financially struggling Zambians by advocatig for higher electricity tariffs. Te muntu imwe uyo.

  29. Finally the will of the people has prevailed.Sisala was lucky to reach this far owing to his gross incompentence in the handling of the load shedding.

  30. Awe chabipa munthu wesu. At least abana besu balebombela ‘Company ya Ziko’. Yapamanzi or whatever you call yourself, basop !

  31. No# 26, I do not even know what to type. A certain Kenyan killed himself over Arsenal losing. Why ? Like Adebayor cares. Weather the lose or not soccer should not govern you. Thus Sisala had to go; Bantu bavutika mwe. Let us work hard for this mismanaged country called Zambia.

  32. You can see the face in pic like a wanted criminal,or a missing person, thats the way it goes Mr Sisala, its payback time, please freeze his bank account and let no one employ him.Let the tarrifs be hiked to 66% so that the dreamer can face reality.

  33. Jigga exactly what I said in #15. Zambians are happy to see a person suffer. It`s our nature. But the reality is as along as the policies remain the same, nothing will change. The fact is the new managing director will demand new furniture, the office painted a different colour, a new car and yeah that`s about it.

  34. #25 Chips Khu says: “….Even if the job of MD will be advertised Zesco’s problems are far from over. The work culture of the entire workforce has to change. There is need to refocus the work culture of zesco employees from the lowest to the highest position.” I fully agree with you, but one question; whose job is it to change the work culture of a Corporation? If not the MD and his immediate subordinates, I don’t know who it is. If he didn’t do exactly what you have so precisely stated during his time at ZESCO, then he was himself a failure and deserves the “matching orders” he got.

  35. Getting fired seems to be the order of the day in Zambia. Here in Germany they have “Kündigungsschutz” and it’s not that easy to be fired, unless on the basis of serious violations of working laws. As for top managers like Sisala, the company would send them off with a huge compansation package plus full pension for life.

  36. It is time. Anyway the man just like any other person has his bad sides and good sides. Go on Sisala, concentrate on your private life and businesses where people will respect you. LIVE YOUR LIFE!

  37. We should completely asphyxiate the the corruption of nepotism that Mwanawasa left us as part of his legacy. As for a new ZESCO MD, it is an open secret that these are always the president’s men. We are still far from exorcising our great nation of its corruption demons.

  38. ZESCO deserves a new lease of life. Many other public institutions deserve a change of management. I wish all boards were like this new ZESCO board and service delivery would improve in Zambia.

  39. 54, Digital Smoke greetings. I just noted that you wrote stuff that I study in Russia and their education is useless today as a confusion from some deluded character Mulenga in Newcastle who thinks that I am in Russia when my flag clearly indicates that I am in EU even after I mentioned about my being here several times on LT.

The ill-motivated Mulenga … forgets that Universities of Surrey and Bath in UK offer space studies and that I may be actually his neigbour. What a terrible character that Mulenga … is.

So, I hope you will be normal enough to acknowledge your confusion and offer an apology to me and the Russia people for behaving like Veep Kunda in releasing data without full information to convince others who are equally not privileged with data.

  40. In Zambia, we’ve developed a culture with a malicious enjoyment of the mishaps or misfortunes of others. We secretly rejoice when men/women fall from grace. We gloat when they are caught in crimes and misdemeanors. We love news like this because it gives us something to be disgusted about, and to make us feel so morally superior. Other people’s sins make us look virtuous. Other people’s misfortunes make our lot easier to bear. They put our problems into perspective.
We are delighted when our enemies suffer. Nothing gives us greater joy. Yet when it is our friend who falls from grace, we are dismayed. When our beloved encounters adversity, when bad things happen to her, when the evil day comes for her in her life, when the medical diagnosis is poor, we are saddened and shocked. We…

  41. The chief executive has but a short life, if he can’t deliver. Zesco, with it’s monopoly, should have expanded into other areas. The problem in Zambia is that the men women in power are visionless. However, good riddance to bad rubbish.

  42. Have you ever heard an admissions director be fired because a kid flunked out of school?”This is what is happening to Sisala and his incompetence,he should have thought of firing those incompetent workers of zesco if at all he was smart. It’s a recession when your neighbor loses his job; it’s a depression when you lose yours.I hope you will handle your depression, good luck and stay blessed.

  43. cont’ from 64. We forget.. It is hard to delight in the misfortunes of those you love or care about, no matter what they have done. It is hard to rejoice in the downfall of men/women, if you wish them well. We should not judge the man based on performance that has been greatly influenced by those that put him there. The whole system is to blame if we are to start pointing fingers. dont you all speak too soon my friends.

  44. It seems people on here do not understand what that office menas. Sisala can have a vision probably the best there is in the world. But, as long as his office is open to srutiny even from a simple DC, his hands are tied. May be people on here never held office back home. They do not understand politics of Africa. Yes he may be gone now, but chances are the next person (who we know will be hand picked) will be the same. I feel sorry for my country.

  45. From posts above, Sisala needed to be there to see what the labourers were doing. Ludicrous! It is why I say, Zambia can have Obama or a certain Mr Clinton in power but still be the same if not worse. Some of you people need to hold office in Zambia for you to appreciate. The stuff you learn at uni goes down the pan. Imagine yourself getting a phone call from Mr Chiluba asking you why your boys disconnected his nephwe`s girl friend`s house? Been there seen it all.

  46. UNITED Church of Zambia (UCZ) Eastern Presbytery Bishop Alex Mwalilino has called on Zambians to respect President Rupiah Banda.

Bishop Mwalilino said in an interview in Chipata that it was disappointing that some Zambians more especially those in the civil society and opposition political parties were not showing respect to the head of State.
He said the president should always be respected so that he could execute his duties diligently.
Bishop Mwalilino said it was sad to hear some civil society organisations members and opposition political party leaders using foul language against the head of State.
UCZ IS A VERY REACTIONARY CHURCH, VERY REACTIONARY INDEED.

  47. Digital Smoke, nice one for this is what noble men who understand public speech do. The deluded bad Mulenga in Newcastle thinks he is the best when he is just some tribal character trying to show that his grouping is the best and has attended best universities.
I hope he will apologise too for his terrible shortcomings and spreading lies on the Internet that I am studying in Russia. He even fails to recognise that my flag picture is not Russian. He has the audacity to speak against Russian education when the Russians are sustaining the International Space Station (ISS) while the US’ Space Shuttle retirement may place the mighty US at the mercy of Russia Lauch vehicles to the ISS while the UK is no where in the space business of doing real stuff though they are using US.

  48. Great RB, It’s sad that a country with so many rivers is failing to invest in building power plants that can meet domestic demand. It just cements the streotypical views that we blacks are incompetent. I hope the chap they appoint will bring business sanity to ZESCO.

  49. Please note that the rehabilitation works started in 1997 under Mwansa. Instead of gradually phasing out the rehabilitation work they took more machines than they could chew. In the end Zesco failed to raise adequate funds. Because ZESCO had been commercilised under the insistence of WB GRZ could not help until last year when GRZ decided to ignore the WB as the situation got out of hand. Poor Sisala. He is to blame because the black outs happened under his watch just like the credit crunch has happened under RB and Obama. The difference is that one appears to be on top of things while th other one is overwhelmed. “Mubikepo umusungu tabakamulowe pantu ni Government” sang the late Mapiki on the death of Mwata. Kaluzi is not a bad choice but how he was hounded out of office by FTJ!

  51. @ Right. Its not just Zambians who at times ‘smile’ at someone’s misfortune. Its in all humanity, sadly. Everyone once in a while looks at those they dont care so much for and think “I am not that f**ked up!” Even religious people are guilty, only they probably put it mildly like “his sin has brought him misfortune.” Implying they haven’t committed such a terrible sin. And life goes on like it or not.

  52. Mr Right: I think lets not judge people on this blog that they are celebrating on some’s misfortune. I think they are a number of questions we can ask ourselves before we do that. Imagine this guy drives a Hummer or any expensive car and he is prosperous, you dont know what he does. What would you do if you discovered he is an armed robber and he has been caught by the police? Its the same with Sisala, its not like people are celebrating, its because people feel he was incompetent to have stayed this long. How did he come to be Zesco MD? politically. So people are saying he is a victim of his own succesful. If you rise by the sword you will fall by the sword. Sisala has fallen as a result of politics and thats what brot him into power. His only choice to come to terms with reality.

  53. Zesco is full of workers that are related. Most of the people in management have not less that five relatives working in various positions of the organisation not to metion the metre readers! They is need for a human resourse audit to be conducted!

  54. Zain please let me know why my flag changes to something else when I am using your network as an ISP. I am in Zambia and I want that flag to show likewise. Te ine some of us.

87, JD greetings and nothing much is happening now. I am just coming from a school party and people have gone to town to do more drinking and other things. I have to continue working and so I came back, but will have to sleep so I can have energy for more work tomorrow.

Otherwise, I am very safe and doing great. How are things coming on your side? What do you think about the POLITICAL ENVIRONMENT NOW THAT SISALA IS NO LONGER AT ZESCO?

  57. The fasnating thing is how much time is wasted daily blogging and
exposing our deep human skin jealous as if any change will be closer to bloggers’ door step. Isn’t all this blogobogio in the best MMD and their Red Brick systems who make the
choice from elections economic direction in their board rooms? Aren’t all these opportunities lining up filled up by their choices? Isn’t the MMD driving those Japanese SUV Prados, Lexus landcruisers?
No matter the economic condition, isn’t it the
Red brick guys driving 5 series German made BMWs
    on free fuel, paid 100%
housing allowances irrespective of one owning a house or not
while their children and themselves have a 100% education coverage? Isn’t a tradition that only he who serves the MMD interest first fills up strategic position?

  58. Poor sisala, anyway go and rest. No one will appreciate what you did for zambia. But at least people will now see and prove for themselves that electricity price increments and load shedding have nothing to do with an individual.

  59. What has he really done? I thought he was doing a commendable job! His boys really impressed me when it came to rectifying faults.

  60. RB is heading for South Africa today to attend Zumas inauguration. It seems to me his never in office …………

  61. Those who are critising Sisala, must ensure that they are clean. I have just read that some accountants at the ministry of home affairs have been convicted of stealing billions of kwachas. And am sure some of them might be among you bloggers.

  62. Too sad for my Landlord!! Hope you won’t increase our rentals. There is a better life after ZESCO though. Good luck

  63. Haa . . . who is next? the MD for Tazara? or salasini (ZNBC) is gone? . . . i hope Mr banda will stop using money from ZESCO to fund his campaign . . . but we have had enough of this dismissals, when are we starting to work as a government . . . and reduce on our trips- our economy is in a mess!!! dissmisals wont solve our problems- cut on your trips mr banda . . . every week you are on a plane . . . . tamunaka? Good luck Rod . .

  64. #99 For sure. This fellor HE, he went to Zim on Friday came back Saturday, Monday and Tuesday brainstorming on how to cool down the fire on the issue of mobile hospitals. Wednesday he went to Chipata on a Private Visit, came back same day via the Zam Air force one. Today he is off to Zuma’s inauguration. Ama blunders I will just mention. 1. Invited Chiluba and Regina to a govt function after Regina had just been convicted and she is on bail, sat her next to Chief Justice. 2. Defended Dora 3. His Son was Involved in RP 4. He missed mayday celebrations when he was needed most 5. Mobile Hospital issue 6. He just said he was proud to have been born in Zimbabwe. 7. He just donated 9,000 metric tones of Maize to Zim when mealie meal prices are high. 9. ETC (Secret blunders) . Ala twachula.

  65. I hope no one is rejoycing that Sisala has lost the job so he can also suffer, but I hope those who are happy are such because this may give birth to a new sense of hope for the power utility and the nation.

  66. donm’t forget the people on your way up coz you might need them on your way down!!ofcourse we don’t rejoice when someone loses a job!tough luck big man…time is a teacher..

  67. # 105 Its like RB want to do away with everything LMP left, this is so sad, wat kind of a country are we living in were every one that comes into power want to have his people in these companies. its sad to see this happening in our country.

  68. In the corporate world being fired is a common thing. Especially as the CEO these jobs are never permanent. So it is expected that if there are performance issues one is bound to leave as is the case with coaching. So good luck to Mr Sisala in his fure endeavors.

  69. #107 Chimx. Thats why we need change. In institutions like ZESCO if a a person is competent why fire them just because you have changed the President. Yes, you can change Ministers and all that but CEOs for goverment parastatal must not change when you change President. Such decisions are not according to the times we live in, times have changed. We need a new crop of politicians.

  70. Mwansa -his predecessor was busy spending money on heft salaries for zesco employees instead of investing in new power plants and rehabilitation of existing ones. Sisala came in as a strategist and started investing in increasing capacity while sustaining the current plants. I think on this he deserves to be considered a bit more favourably. The problems were partly caused by Mwansa not Sisala

  71. ZEZESCO is the only place where you can only desire to work for in this country coz there is free cash to spend on salaries only. As soon as this is reversed by the new board then money will be channeled to productive areas of the business.

  72. # 110 Need Change, don’t forget that sisala was part of LMP’s family and as for me that why i think RB is busy trying to gettin these people out. true we need new crops of politicians to run this country,

  73. # 114 i guess you are going to say that the zesco management had a part to play, but wat you don’t understand is that some work needs to be done on some of these lines, let not blame one preson for this, yes RB had done wat he think is right but i just hope we will not see the MD for zesco coming from the east.

  74. During FTJ,it was Mwansa -Bemba,during LEVY,it was Sisala-Lamba,during RB, it will be Nyirenda-Ngoni\chewa. Watch the new board, majority from kumodzi kumawa including the Chairman. Sisala was a pro,its only that he now comes from a wrong tribe.periode! ZAMBIA,the real Africa!

  75. The Zesco job has nothing to do with how efficient or inefficient you are. It has always been a political job solely dependent on how much a*s*s-licking one is willing to do to stay in the job! The same with the heads of ZNBC, Times of Zambia and Daily Mail!

  76. I agree #111, mwansa reigned when there was abundant power. In serious industries one sweats for the next generation, so in a few years’ time those who will reign at zesco will begin to enjoy the fruits of sisala and his team. Cruel it seems but in developed and civilised countries they do this routinely for the future generations. But hey what is this tribalism from some bloggers all about? Let’s have the best man for the job, chewa, lozi, bemba, luvale, kaonde, tonga, or even white or chinese zambian kaufela bo ndate.
