WHAT will never be denied as fact when this country’s history is written is how one Michael Chilufya Sata built the Patriotic Front from scratch to make it the second biggest political party in the country in less than a decade.
And it is not like the party was born with any teeth at all. Other than Michael Sata himself, there was no any other easily identifiable name. And when you have Edwin Lifwekelo as the secretary-general, who in essence is the chief executive officer of the party, then you know that you have a lot of work to do. At the time he was forming the PF, opposition parties on the ground included the United Party for National Development (UPND) led by Anderson Mazoka, the Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) under the guidance of Lieutenant-General Christon Tembo and Heritage Party (HP), under the command of Brigadier General Godfrey Miyanda.
And that is not all.
There was also the Ben Mwila’s Zambia Republican Party (ZRP), Nevers Mumba’s National Citizens Coalition (NCC), Akashambatwa Mbikusita’s Agenda for Zambia (AZ), United Front For Development and Democracy (UFDD) lead by Humphrey Siulapwa and the former ruling party, the United National Independence Party (UNIP), which has always enjoyed the support of former President Dr Kenneth Kaunda.
During the 2001 general elections, Michael Sata got less than two percent of the national vote while managing to win only one Parliamentary seat. But despite that dismal performance, he never relented, perhaps fueled by his hatred of Levy Mwanawasa. He started going round the country campaigning much to the displeasure of Mwanawasa and the ruling Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD), who kept on saying elections were over and there was no need to continue with the campaigns.
But he did not listen to them.
He rode on a platform of putting more money in people’s pockets and reducing taxes. He also made Chinese investment a campaign issue. Further, he made the anti-corruption crusade waged by Mwanawasa an issue, declaring that he will pardon former President Chiluba if elected.
The message found resonance on the Copperbelt and in Lusaka, Luapula and Northern provinces. By the time the 2006 general elections were coming, Michael Sata and PF were by far the biggest threat to Mwanawasa and the MMD’s hold on power.
This was so despite the alliance of the UNIP, UPND and FDD, who formed the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). There are some people who think that if it was not for a few irregularities, Sata would have won those elections. Others actually believe he was robbed. Of course the 2008 presidential election story is well-known. To date, Sata remains the second favourite to become President after the incumbent Rupiah Banda.
In that regard, Sata deserves respect for building the PF to the level it is today.
But as we all know, destiny is never in our hands its in God’s hands only. I ask myself, if anything should happen to Mr. Sata that should make him incapable of leading the PF. What next? What would remain of the PF? Will it be able move-on with life smoothly or that will be the beginning of its end?
Since the formation of the party, it has had five secretary general’s. The first was Edwin Lifwekelo, then followed by Guy Scott, then Charles Mumbwa and then Edward Mumbi. The current one is a lawyer and former Lusaka City town clerk Winter Kabimba.
None of the five have ever been elected, all have been appointed and disappointed at Sata’s pleasure and displeasure.
Added to that, for a long-time, Sata did not have a deputy. It was only after a long-time that he elevated Guy Scott to the position of deputy-president after serving as secretary-general. In fact, Guy Scott is Sata’s longest-serving secretary general. It remains to be seen how long Winter Kabimba lasts in that position.
What is the point of all this discourse? Well, if there is something that all this reveals, is the fact in terms of building the PF beyond Sata, the King Cobra has failed.
A decade after its formation, the party has never gone to the convention to amend its constitution or to elect leaders. All national and provincial leaders are appointed by Sata, and Sata alone.
Well, it does not take a genius to know that this is not healthy for the party in particular and democracy in general. The PF should begin to build internal democracy within the party. Yes, Sata may be the founder of the party, but it is by no means a personal entity. Sata is not PF or is PF Sata. These two should remain separate so much so that should Sata decide to stop active politics today, the party should still be able to move-on smoothly.
In fact, the success of Sata’s work in so far as building the PF goes is in having the party continuing to be strong long after he has left the PF. That, is the measure by which Mr Sata will be judged. And not say if Sata resigned or left for any reason, then Guy Scot will take-over. Guy Scot is Sata’s appointee, he has never been elected, and as such, the members have the right to reject his leadership. And just one more thing, the PF has no membership cards, so it is difficult to tell who is a member and not.
In other words, the PF should start preparing for life after Sata. And Sata should start preparing for that as well.
For this reason, I am for the PF going to the convention, so that the party structures can be defined before elections next year. The new draft constitution says the Vice president automatically becomes president without elections when the president of the country is incapacitated or passes on? On the expense of being called a racist, is Zambia ready for a white president 46 years after independence? Or maybe PF is better of with GBM as vice although he seems not to know what he wants and has now dramatically rescinded his resignation.
PF will go to a convention at the right time. It true people need to be elected. Whilst Sata may seem to be PF for now there are plenty of leaders out there withing PF who are ready to take the mantle should anything happen to Sata.
Rubish article. LT, please you should now what is news from junk. For your own information, Guy Scot is a Zambian so he qualifies to hold any constitutional office. Secondly, concetrate on your MMD than showing interest in the PF which you despise so much. People who vote for Sata will know how to remember him, not few of you who dont vote for him. I dont see the MMD being democractic unless you have difficaulties to understand the word democracy.

What is your problem, lets cross the river when we get there. PF is short of leaders, don’t just narrow your self to useless former useless secretary generals who are on the streets looking for jobs.
The issue should be about the democratisation of the PF and the party existing without the name of Sata. The issue of Guy Scott being a potential President of Zambia does not arise at all because the Constitution says he cannot be – and that is why Guy, Simon Zukas, and Dipak Patel resigned in 1996 when Chiluba pushed the current discriminatory Constitution.
You have outrightly put it that sata managed to build his party on his own from the scratch – which is the reason why he hasn’t subjected himself to any elections until such a time we hold a convention to elect new leaders. mind you we need a delegation of 6,500 for the convention and money.

To me this is a well written article, except of course the last paragraph which I deem a bit off course. Someone before, pointed out that Sata’s track records is full of success stories when he is on the scene and failures when he is not present. Look at how miserable LCC became after he left – and incidentally it was RB, if I am not mistaken, who took over! Both are washed out old men who need to move over!

Zambia is ready for a president who is going to deliver to the people of Zambia the services they Zambians have always been denied of and they are ready for a president who will inspire them into innovation, industrous, hard work for themseves, etc to restore their dignity. And this president must be a Zambian of any ethnic background. Zambia should be a model of Africa just like it was has always been a model as a liberator almost all the southern african states from imperialism. In short Guy Scott is a Zambian and deserves anything Zambian regardless of his color.
Iam pretty sure very soon- in less than 3 decades, we will be having Members of Parliament of Chinese origin. And with any measurement thats ok if they are Zambians by birth or whatever applicable law.

Sata has come a long way using his self-generated money to become so popular & at par with a taxpayer funded MMD. The biggest problem with Sata is that he does not believe in systems & he does not know how to delegate duties. Sata believes in micro managing everyone under him. Such a leader is not good for a young democracy like ours & he very likely to be dictatorial and oppressive. Sata does not trust any one, that explains why he appoints and dis-appoints all key members of his team. He is an attention seeker who wants to be associated with all that goes on in his party. As a president were would he find time to check on council garbage collectors reporting late for work? His other major problem is that he will be a diplomatic disaster for Zambia.

georgeWbush@20: there are numerous examples of dictatorial tendencies in Sata but unfortunately most of his followers just turn a blind eye to such misdemeanors. A good example is his decision to expel 22 MPs from his party just because they exercised their constitutional right to participate in the NCC. That might seem insignificant to some of you but that just gives you a clear insight of what type of a person Sata is. Anyone who crosses his path he deals with them ruthlessly even if it means ordering his body guards to pour chibuku on a woman MP. Just imagine what sort of things such a person would do if given the instrument of power especially the degree of authority a Zambian president has under the current constitution. Do you really need reminding that Sata is the most uncouth of all the presidential candidates Zambia has ever had? No thing I have noticed is that PF is Sata and Sata is PF. People who vote for PF do not do so because they love the party but Sata. Granted MMD plots people to dethrone Sata from the PF presidency one month before the elections and he goes to form another another party on which to stand on, all the current members of PF would shift to the new party. Of all people in zambia-Machungwa was been looked to as an intellectual & wise leader but his true colours unvelled when he went head over heels to rally the constitution that has just helped the rich get even richer like Chifumu & Zolomis.It becomes a problem if people are let loose to do what they choose to. Some people have the guts to lineup for Sata, history repeat itself, not too long ago, Sata,Dean, Teta called Mazoka a sick man. Where Teta and Dean today? and what is hapening to Sata, guess what? am privaldged to infom from PF STAFF at the secretariate that Sata is very hill and were wondering how he will manage to cover the whole country to campaign upto 2010 since he goes on a machine from 14 to 17hrs to shape his heart. georgeWbush@31: I just gave you one example of Sata’s dictatorial style of leadership. If I had to catalog all cases I might end up filling a whole book. It’s up to you to look at Sata with an unbiased eye and examine your concise to see whether he is an unblemished leader. Yes some degree of dictatorship could be tolerated but not the blatant dictatorship and intolerance exhibited by Sata even before he steps a foot at State House. The warning signs are there for all to see. Even the latest episode of firing GBM demonstrates Sata’s clear disregard for procedures. He fired his Chairman for elections without consulting anyone or giving the man a chance to defend himself. As correctly pointed out by GBM why didn’t Sata do the same to Mushili and Willi Nsanda?

MMD never elected its President either! And it still left the position of Vice President of the party empty! Chiluba was the elected president of MMD and Enock Kavindele was the Vice president. What happened to these two after Mwanawasa came? Real democracy batata?
A hypocrite is one who wants people to do what he or she won’t do. A lot of you bloggers who say Zambia is for blacks, you’re hypocrites because you are not wishing the best for Zambia. I realize that you don’t care for what’s best for Zambia becoz you don’t live in Zambia. Zambia is for all Zambians where black or not.
Guy Scot would be the best person to lead PF. He is the brain behind PF and does not carry the political garbage inherit of Sata. PF will be more popular with him at the helm because he would be accepted in all corners of Zambia.
On another note, let me point out to all PF cadres on this blog that UPND and MMD have some internal democratic systems. They may not be perfect but they are far much better than the dictatorship perpetrated by Sata’s PF.

It is well ariculated with facts on the ground.Usually meaningfull debates are brought about by people that think or originate ideas, the unfortunate thing is that there are sheep and goats out there and this article has managed to distinguish between them. It matters less whether the author is MMD, PF, or UPND what matters is the substance of the article. Sata is from the UNIP generation. Kaunda appointed all Senior Government officials, the UNIP Party Ranks and well as Managing Directors of all Parastatal Companies. Basically, KK was the ALPHA and the OMEGA. It is believed that he appointed the first Headmasters of David Kaunda Secondary School and Helen Kaunda Secondary School. Thus subsequently!

Time and again history has kept documenting that all hate mongers who have schemed against President Chiluba have miserably hit the wall and surrendered their lives to hell. Judge Japhet Banda, Levy Mwanawasa, Zambia Police Lusaka commanding officer Greenwell Ng’uni and 2 other Zambians are now gnashing their teeth in hell with agony as a reward for tramping on an innocent Chiluba.

Sata is a very decisive person and he doesn’t care who is affected by his decision(s). He also has a natural belief to do something for Zambia. He believes in hardwork. Thats why when he was once minister of health in mmd govt all hospitals and health centres started to have drugs and became very clean. Not only that- our doctors and nurses even started to come back from diaspora. It has never happened in Zambia’s life apart from the opposite. When he became labour minister, again, labour law started to improve and dignity started coming back to the Zambian labour force. As if that wasn’t enough-…

He bought long distance buses for the city council’s revenue, he constructed fly-over bridges near both Kabwe and Kafue round abouts where trains claimed a lot of lives for a long time. He improved the city’s cleanliness to a great conspicous extent. He made people work. It was through his initiative and hard work that put him at cross roads with his boss Kafupi. But, he is simply an achiever and you can’t get it away from him. This is the man Zambia currently needs to set the country in working motion and not tourists.
