Government has engaged the Chinese Government through its embassy in Lusaka to pay the Zambian employees at the Chinese-run Collum Coal mine in Sinazongwe district, Southern province.

And Government has appealed to foreign investors to abide and respect the Zambian labour laws failure to which appropriate punishment will be meted on them.

Home Affairs Minister Mkhondo Lungu told parliament on Wednesday that government is saddened by the Collum Coal mine shooting which occurred a few days ago where 11 mine workers and a passerby where shot at by two mine managers.

Delivering a ministerial statement in parliament yesterday , Mr. Lungu disclosed that his ministry, in collaboration with ministries of Mines and Mineral Development and the Labour and Social Services has engaged the Chinese Government on discussions on the incident.

He said government is considering a ‘Fast-Track Court’ to deal with such matters in the near future.

Mr. Lungu further disclosed that the two managers at the Mine have since been sent to Choma Central Prison pending court proceedings.

The Minister however regretted that Police have arrested some workers who are alleged to have stolen property from management offices.

Meanwhile, Mr. Lungu has appealed to political players to stick to the electoral code of conduct and desist from engaging their cadres in violence ahead of the Chilanga and Mpulungu parliamentary by-elections.

The Minister said political party leaders and their supporters should at all times maintain peace.

  1. Now the Minister is waya wayaling in answering a simple straight forward question. He should not be talking about pipo arrested for thefts in Management offices same day. His ministerial comments were to be on the shooting of innocent pipo. Compansation is not enough, the ChonCholis should see the inside of Monze Prison. No sacrate cows. We know Red lips GK is in China, No trade off.

  2. Why does the Zambian Government have to engage the Chinese Government in order to regulate the operations of a company that is operating within the Zambian legal framework and jurisdiction? Is Collum mine part of the Chinese diplomatic corps to Zambia? Amazing!

  3. Hehe..this is how revolution start in a country. Zambia are saying enough is enough….no more being slaves in our own country. Our fathers and mothers fought for their children’s freedom.

Why should we be sold to the foreigners? why should we be second to the foreigners?
No Zambians , time for revolution has come, let us fight for our dignity and respect.

Let men and women stand up and fight for freedom.

  4. Rhetoric, problems at that mine are not new. With serious leadership those chocholis are not supposed to be in that area.It started with Levy(MHSRIP) when then minister Alice Simango cried & gnashed teeth publicly over the inhuman working conditions workers were subjected to.

  5. Amazing government.Do the chinese engage the zambian embassy in Bejing if a zambian breaks the law in china? No, they deal with the person according to their law.I thought we have a zambian lady in china facing execution for drug trafficking. This govt has NO backbone at all.

  6. Amazing, very difficult to distinguish between investor and infestor!!!!!!!!!!!!! ever seen the luapula chinese infestor farmer.

  7. Fellow bloggers, the Minister of Home Affairs didn’t say “Compensate”, he indicated paying them. Reading between the Lines, he indicated paying them the K250,000/- they get month in month out. He didn’t talk about compensating theme, remember these are two different things. Aside from been Jailed, these Chinese miglets needs to compensate our brothers, and like a fellow Citizen mentioned yesterday, not less than US$250,000/- per Individual. Take these Miglets to task.

  8. I really hope these two fools are really in prison and not being protected by the governement while it lies to the Zambian people. I really really hope they are in prison right now and they are not receiveing any special treatment. I agree, besides being jailed for at least five years with hard labour, they should compensate the victims at least US$250,000. After they have served their sentences, they should deported immediately. These *****s are holding our fellow citizen on death role on their soil for breaking their laws in an act that did not even involve injury or the intent to commit murder. These two fools must equally face the full punishment our laws impose, period, end of discussion.
