Diaspora Project 2012

Many Zambians living in the Diaspora have yearned to invest, back home, their hard-earned foreign currency. The feeling of having a tangible investment back home breeds excitement about one’s security should that individual decide to migrate back to the motherland. Diaspora based Zambians have engaged in transatlantic businesses with their relatives and friends in Zambia, ranging from clothes, electronic gadgets, rearing chickens, house construction, mining supply contracts, and cosmetics supplies to mention just a few. While Zambians abroad have done this in good faith, the majority of our people back home have viewed this link as a cash cow. This negative trend has eroded any confidence among the Diaspora Zambians that they had to invest in Zambia through friends and relatives. The potential loss of income from this lack of trust is colossal. As Zambians living in the Diaspora, we have merely complained about the attitude of our people in Zambia but we have not sought to come up with a more viable business venture, both that fulfills our potential to influence the world market and one through which our interests will be served.

Realizing that partnerships with our friends in Zambia only serve to enrich them, I have reached the inevitable conclusion that we only have ourselves to blame. For how can we continue pouring water into an ocean and expect it to dry up. Diaspora Zambians need to seriously tap into their exposure and potential to be a united front by championing large scale economic ideas. The privilege of living in a developed society must serve as impetus for us to strive to innovate as we are exposed to the way our friends engage in development. Diaspora Project 2012 is an effect of the negative returns we endure by investing at a small scale through our relatives in Zambia. As the name suggests, the project will target 2012 as its initiation year. Here is how it will work;

A membership of 5000 Diaspora Zambians will be targeted by the year 2012. The major goal of this project is to raise $13,000,000 within a year. How is this possible? Each member will contribute $50 every week for 52 weeks. Member contributions will not start until the targeted membership is achieved. Funds may be deposited in a reputable financial institution as agreed upon by the membership. The purpose of this project will be to raise a substantial amount of money, collectively, and target an investment sector in Zambia such as property development, cement manufacturing plant, pharmaceuticals, road construction, commercial farming, banking, insurance, software development, computer assembly plant etc.

A management team will be established to explore issues such as registration of the entity, legal requirements, financial management, recruiting, logistics, and business sourcing. In the beginning, this management team must be able to sacrifice their personal funds in order to realize the goals of the entity. The project does not take off until we have all the targeted 5000 members.
Diaspora Project 2012 will endeavor to create a difference from the usual poor quality and sub-standard goods manufactured in Zambia. The Project will engage field experts in Research and Development, Product Development, Packaging, Shipping, Global Marketing, and Resource Development. The project will aspire to penetrate the global market place by producing highly competitive products, products that meet or exceed international standards. Massive investment in this area will be required.

The Project will empower members to research and share development ideas for our common good. The intellectualism of each member will be explored and developed.

The Zambian government will be enticed to provide tangible benefits to the Project through acquisition of land, tax incentives, and foreign trade policy alignment. If the Zambian government can extend a favorable windfall tax regime to foreign investors, they can certainly do the same to Diaspora Project 2012. While we indigenous Zambians sit back and arm chair critique Zambian government policies, our colleagues from other countries are engaging in meaningful investments in our own backyard. The advantage that Diaspora Project 2012 brings to the Zambian economy will be immense. As opposed to foreign investors who externalize profits, the Project will reinvest back into the Zambian economy. The Project will also create jobs for the local people.
The ultimate goal of the Project will be to become the most ingenious economic block in Africa. The potential of this Project to engage in meaningful global trade will be its cornerstone.
In any investment, investors intend to realize a profit. Members of the Project will share profits through their equity concentration in the Project.

The need to engage serious debate on this issue is of utmost importance. For so long, Zambians in the Diaspora have been a laughing stock of our people back home, that after spending so many years abroad, we still have nothing to show for it. Yet, over the years, we may have contributed to our people being very rich and comfortable through our hard earned money and bogus investments that they lure us by. It is time that we as Zambians in the Diaspora put our energies together and developed an initiative that will benefit us and our children. The onus is ours to prove that we can make a meaningful investment in Zambia while going about with our daily lives in the Diaspora.

  1. Mr Chishimba i wish you the best, however, be prepared for sad people on this blog that have nothing to do, they will pour all manner of scorn on your project, dont get discouraged but remain stay forcused.

  2. My friend, Zambians in diaspora dont trust their immediate families, and you expect them to trust your word? Wish you luck, or welcome to Zambia? This is a non starter, utilize your wisdom else where?

  3. Great idea. Forget the time wasters. Here are a number of suggestions:-

First of all have a website where we are going to register our names and contact details. The website should have email capabilities for internal communication.

Have a credible bank account, maybe money should not be converted to Zambian Kwacha because ZMK is unstable and unreliable, I have lost a lot of money due to investment being converted to ZMK.

Have a secure way of business ideas and business plans submission.

Have a point system of acceptance because you can’t accept everyone as some people abroad are not visionaries therefore, you don’t want time wasters on board because time is a valuable resource we have to work with.

Have a system of reports because we would love to have transparency.

  4. Chishimba, Who will handle the umuzulu?
Am a qualified Accountant languishing without a job. Do me a ka job kabili nobe tubulu!!

  5. I am on board, we need to give it a go in addition to our individual efforts, this is also about economic scaling. Give details ASAP

  6. This is another pyramid scheme for sure? Anyway, suckers are born each day? this is what we called “babatoni” in kabwata? kuliza kanyimbo…..super vina….? go ahead and invest your hard earned money. chishimba has not told you how and who is going to handle your money? better save that $52 each week and buy shares in chilanga cement , zambia sugar etc?, than give it to chishimba…mind you..he’s bemba…..!

  7. is this another ponzi scheme? Are you a Fund manager Mr Chishimba.? Zambians don’t trust each other. Its better you make money for yourself.anyway wish you luck! I’ll invest my $50 in Chilanga cement as Gwembe valley the Tonga has said though I don’t see what tribe has to do with this

  8. Why take a “long route”, when all that is required for Zambian in Diasporais to sit down.

    (A) Find a Great Business & Development Idea,

    (B) Draw up a good Business Plan

    (C) Write down the Objectives

    (D) Analyse Your Forecast

    (E) Evaluate Your Risks

    (F) Find a good Professional Team that will be passionate about the idea

    (G) Ask anyone to buy shares in the Venture with minimum amount of money like £1000.

  9. With the Official Support of the Zambian Government, you present the idea to.

    1) Venture Capitalist

    2) Emerging Markets Investors

    3) Investment Banks

    4) Overseas Development Programs

If the idea is good, you get (borrow) the money in phases and start the ball rolling. For example, split the £13,000,000.00 into 3 payments and negotiate good terms.

  10. Mr Chishimba well said man…just update us on how it will work. Really we need some proper investment, this is what our friends the Arabs do. They bring together their money and where are they in the world business? Very far, doing very well. Let us try it Mr Chishimba, dont listen to this MMD bootlickers who always enjoy Tax payers money. Dull creatures who are fed by poor Zambians.

  11. Another pipe dream going no where. Who is this Chanda Chishimba? What are your credentials & credibility? If funny how crafty characters are always trying to ride on other peoples cocktales with shady non-starter scams. Just concetrate on improving & enhancing your dead-end job instead of trying to concoct fraudulant scams. Why would anyone invest $50 a week with you instead of a reputable investment/brokerage house where their money is atleast insured against default. Spare us the nonsense Mr Chishimba. Your tribe also has a reputation for theft & dubios practices which is another strike against you. Good luck sir.

  12. OTHERWISE, it is not easy/feasible committing someone to contribute £50 a week to a project that they will wait for years to kick off.

HOWEVER, I am not discouraging anyone that believes using this format presented by the author. It’s just that life is about working HARD and SMART, especially when you are dealing with Investments.

One of the reasons why Banks set up subsidiary Investments Banks was because they found a way of Hedging & Making Money faster than the normal conventional Retail Banking way.

  13. Bloggers, I am the author of the article. No where does it say I will personally handle the funds. A management team will be elected from among the members who will take charge of the project. Reports will be furnished to members. Please note, this culture of insulting someone with such ideas must stop. Just because you have the luxury to hide behind pseudo names does not mean you can insult anybody. What is being shared with you is an idea, to which I have the right to do. Judge the idea by it’s content and not the author. If the topic is behind you, just don’t comment.

  14. Ati, no the house has reached window level, so just send the money for the ring beam. You demand pictures, they send you pictures of somebody’s house. yabaaaaaa!

  15. Great idea, I would on board if and only if a swiss investment holding and auditing firm; credentials signatory by the Swiss royal or their government highest official. For as much as most nationals are scandalous Switzerland prides themselves on perfection for competitions sake and national image. Ghanaians produce 2 billion $ for their nation why can Zambians not do like wise.

  16. Group projects like that have never worked because people can never be trusted with funds. Money brings temptation and erode morals.Initially do individual projects or team up with 3 or 4 people and see how that works and then you lure others by off loading shares. Avoid getting excited, and focus on small group projects. Remember its is hard earned money. $50 a week!?…..for 52 weeks!? Its like walking with a bottle of water from Durban to Cairo- you will get tired of it.

  17. In Kenya, projects of this nature have been happening for years! Apparently, the history of Katondo street starts at Mutaba House where a few Muzungus used to transact “‘foreign exchange’ dealings when changing currencies of the colonialists. At Katondo Street, the Kenyan Community as their compatriots in Kenya have always been sending their children in villages to school and universities by pooling small sums of money in this same sense. But then just shows you on this matter cannot work using Zambian Diaspora: Out of 26 (on blog) before me 19 are sceptical. Only 5 want to move forward with Chishamba. This is why in Zambia we don’t progress- always ‘pull me down’ syndrome. However, this is how Canadian Antigionish Movement started in Nova Scotia, when just a small group woke up and…

  18. Good initecive. Thats how indians and chinese think. I am in as long as no PF style of managment were mismanegment comes first, then stealing.

  19. in medicine break throughs are always met with rejection at the planning and iniation stage, this is a very good idea, $50 a week for 52 weeks is $2600 per person which may really is not that robust but the returns if carefully managed will be great. keep us updated. Zambians live in hope and die in despair, lets not just end up hoping for better things, lets do something to make things better, this is one of them

  20. ZK12million per year, what a dream, and worse thing is that its impossible to gather 5000 Zambians, not on this planet called earth. Anyway it is good to have such Utopian projects, I will be first to apply for a job.

  21. This is a positive initiative but naturally you expect aim chair critics. This is in fact, what Zambian Embassies abroad are expected to do for people in the diaspora but alas, they are just busy chewing our hard earned money. Therefore, Mr Chishimba don’t be discouraged. It is better to have a bad idea than not having one at all but to the contrary, this looks a good idea.

In your next update, please share insights about the legality of this project.

  22. This is a positive initiative but naturally you expect arm-chair critics. This is in fact one of the things Zambian Embassies must do for people in the diaspora but alas, they are just busy chewing our hard earned money. Please Mr Chishimba don’t be discouraged. It is better to have a bad idea than not having one at all but to the contrary yours is a progressive one. In your next update share insights about the legality of this project.

  23. What are the procedures for wanting in/out ,any late fees for delayed contributions or early withdrawal.Given that the sector is yet to be decided on isn’t 2012 too soon to decide if the project is economically viable, any markets for products and recruiting of specialists?Any take off of such a project would be at least 3yrs from sourcing of funds. Is there any diversification to safeguard downturns or ensure healthy income streams in cyclical environments?

  24. Be careful, friends, with such seemingly good sounding ideas…be forewarned that i still have disciples out there…

The author of the article has not even hinted on what safeguards would be available to prevent the hard-earned spondulicks from leaking out of such ventures as s/he mentions. For all i know, this could well be high-jacked by politicians…it could well be another Meridian BIAO (most people never got paid a single dime of the money they had saved in that bank!)…the so called management team will have the same mindset as your relatives…coz they will just be your same different relatives brought together….what i am saying is…though the author`s ideas sound utopian, there is a lacuna for them working out…but remember that it`s better to err on the side of caution

  25. Well,if i never trusted my relatives, this could have worked for me,but thank God i trust my family and so far they are doing a great job for me.I can never fault them, guess my parents did a good job when raising us.
And whats this notion about being a laughing stock when you go back home from abroad? A lot of people go abroad for studies, not to make money and become rich so when you go back you can show everyone that you were in Lala land. Most people in diaspora are students, they are not in formal employment,in most cases parents will assist with fees, but you need a job to pay the bills. So expecting a student to invest heavily back home is rather asking too much

  26. Now coming to this brilliant idea
You pay 50bucks a week, that translates to $200 a month, in 18months one would have saved $3600 which is equivalent to K18m. Call some reputable real estate agents (no middlemen if you dont trust anyone), make a proposal, find me land,i’ve got so much money,i can pay monthly installments of $200 a month for 36months (K36M).Its all about negotiating, open a dollar account in Zambia, let you bank do an automatic debit from your pay cheque to credit your account in Zambia, show the real estate agent that you have some money going into your account weekly or fortnightly.Land does not depreciate,it only increases in value. That would be a starting point.Nothing against the authors brilliant idea

  27. In theory the idea is good, it just needs to be refined. What #15 and #16 has stated is another faster option.

I am for the idea, I know a few people that have tried and failed (not as successful as they had intended) to achieve meaningful goals. However, those who have failed, did so due to lack of proper implementation. Not everybody will support even the best of ideas.

  28. I smell a Ponzi scheme here and its impossible to get a jail term of 150 years in Zambia – chekeleko business with the cops. Good luck and keep on wasting time.

  29. 15, 16 Indpendence Observer – Ok you lead by example, so you know what you are talking about. We know and have seen you have made it big time in Diaspora . Having read your comments, can you recommend any particlar venture capitalist that can provide funds in the UK.

  30. Mmhh,$2600 sounds like too little to invest. You can only get a small return on that amount and it’ll be after a while too.It may make better financial sense for a smaller but better funded group in order to provide fatter margins for members.Something like $50,000 minimum would be better and it better come with a solid bussiness proposal.

  31. I’m game my friend. its about time. i couldn’t agree more. There are many of us dare devils about to risk our efforts. I’ve exchanged conversation on difference inverstment ideas and sorry to say this; My zambians are naives stupid and dull. I’m 100% behind you, beside i’m further willing to working with you in this infancy.

Lets work on the nitt gritty issues and lobby for those policies that will be enabling. Pharmaceuticals i think will be a good idea.

  32. Count me in. I can not think of an easier way to swindle Zambians. I want that Big Cheese on your committee, especially keeping the books to that reputable financial institution that you talked about where their money will be kept. Finally things are looking up for me. Call me, please!

  33. I think that it is better for Zambians for now to ensure that a proper government is voted into power than pursue such ‘cottage’ ideas. While it is a good idea for people to pool their resources and make progress, one should evaluate what impact this will have overall. Is it not better to make political change so that the massive national resources (billions) can start benefiting Zambians? I think that a government can make more meaningful change than a group of privileged individuals. Being an election year, young people must engage themselves and ensure that the right people are voted into office.

  34. # 12 and all trabalists who are fond of denegrating Bembers Yes We agree that we are theives because we aquired the skills from your parents, grandparents and forefathers and we guinely appreciate their efforts in making us the biggest theives under the sun. Thanks for the reminder Ba Kabwa.

  35. How do you trust people you have never met before? who will run this whole and where and how will be meetings held? and who will be willing to give $50 per week for 52 weeks? Its good to want to do great things but we must also be realistic!!!

  36. While it is good to read such an article, it not easy to see when 5000 people will start enjoying their benefits from this type of business. My advice is that for all Zambians who are still inetrested in investing back home they should be making trips to Zambians and do things for themselves. If you just send money without close monitoring you are doomed. These days there is online banking that will enable you to monitor your finances in your account. We have people who have been in diapora for ten years without going to Zambia but they expect their relatives to work for them like slaves or donkeys. They will continue stealing from you like that. Go home and see things for yourselves and plan well. Waiting for that very big company with 5000 beneficiaries to take off will make you poorer

  37. CKC just get a job or go to a bank and get a loan. We have been swindle pafula!

  38. Business rule number 1: beat everyone else to the business opportunity to maximize your profit. The man that does the exact opposite is more likely going to be a scam artist or close to clueless in the business sense. If commonalities such as citizenship, tribal affiliation or indeed the diaspora tag where ever reason enough to get folks to invest together in any given set of ventures then all churches would be catholic wealthy. Common sense will tell you this is an epic fail, but then again the author will not be the one taking the risk so maybe he is smarter than the average me.

  39. Good idea.it can be done with dedicated pipo.separate the boys from the men.Arrogant pipo want to see you fall.iam game, believe in the possible.

  40. Good job Chishimba. I like the idea, just like someone said, let us start with a website were everyone can be able to communicate. Then let us have a meeting and discuss the way forward. I bet we have a lot of professional Zambians in any field of business and by that I mean from bottom to top. This is something that can work as long as Zambians can learn to trust each other.

    Bravo Chishimba!

  41. Mr Chishimba, you seem to have a great idea but your introduction is extremely low. You start by branding zambians especially those in Zambia as crooks. You also elevate those in diaspora as enlightened Zambians. This is how colonialists viewed AfrIca. In the meantime you want to invest among crooks. Sorry sir, living in diaspora does not make you a saint. If anything most of you have even turned into international conmen. So tone down your language as you think of investing sir. Don’t insult your brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers in the name of investment.

  42. #54 am with you……..ati nkunku zonse zathaba usiku! hehehehehehe. some family members. this idea can’t work. i dont want to blame anyone for losing my few bucks, i will save mine and find what to do later.

  43. “5000 Investors?”, what are we; buying the Congo Rain forest? Chishimba, some of the criticisms here are true and can even be used to re-evaluate your idea. Not to shoot you down for taking initiative but please be more realistic, and you will get it done. Otherwise this sounds likea a Ponzi Scheme on steroids.

  44. I agree with #15/16 INDEPENDENT OBSERVER.The other way is to set up an investment vehicle with 1 millon shares and sell each share at $13 so that it translates to $13million.Then interested people (risk takers) buy any amount of shares. This will be quicker and you may endup with only 500 investors. It may even be oversubscribed.Dont listen to the skeptics ba chishimba, there will always be ‘chicken littles’ crying the sky is falling.

  45. good idea .get us updated .Are we going to use those zambian banks which will treat s like shit? They will be chopping our cash in the name of interests. We are used to Chinese banks which give us interests,o we always build our accounts other than banking k1.2min zed by the end of 12months u have nothing coz 100pin/m belongs to the bank from yr acc.Banking system that empoverishes locals should be revised or we will keep our cash out of zambia.

  46. Mr Chishimba, this is indeed a good idea. But practically it might be very difficult to implement and the problem will arise not from the owners of the money but the people that will be managing it. The experts you are talking about will want to get exobitant salaries and drive posh cars as the trend is in Zambia now. There will definately be political interference and as it is often viewed that most Diaspora people support the opposition, MMD will want to frastrate this project. I propose the best would be to allocate land (for comercial perposes) where Diasspora people can build shops to sell goods they bring with them. The place can called Diaspora centre. In countries like Ethiopia, the government allocated land where Diaspora people, all those runners have build houses.

  47. Bloggers, in an earlier post I had actually advised on investment clubs that would then be used to launch serious investments back home (on an article about Anna Mwale’s swindle by her uncle). This is similar. It should not be compulsory, so those still wishing to use alternatives (especially high earners) perhaps can still land and survive when they get back home. For the average to low earning diasporans this is indeed a very good idea. Incorporate a company so that legal instruments guide your activities. All the best!!!!

  48. And then the 3000 chickens went awol, thats how frodo baggins wrote his famous book. THE RUNAWAY CHICKENS: To this day know one has established the chickens’ whereabouts. But it romoured that they are at sate house and taken the space the lovable monkeys left owing to their gross misconduct.

  49. its good idea but pipo in diaspora cannot afford to put away 50 dollars every week thats asking for too much. its hard to make a saving in diaspora bcos of bills to be taken care of. One has to burst his arsse working to afford such a saving it means you have to do more that one job

  50. We first need to have a Government we can trust else, another good idea that would not take off. By the way why does our Government always think foreigners are the best Investors? As a country we have failed to encourage real SMEs due to lack of capital and where available, given to Politicians and their relatives. Corruption at its best.

  51. Sorry, please count me out of this dubious project. It will just follow the pattern of how doner funds are being siphoned by some crafty government officials. I’m better off doing business with my family.
    Wish you good luck.

  52. Chishimba, this a good idea. Im on board. What we need is the bankable Business plan (which I can volunteer to draft). I know this idea is all over the place and fluffy but we can narrow the scope or target market based on IRR, PP, RoI, etc. All the Zedians in Diaspora who gonna be part of this simply become shareholders. So we can have muiltple sources of funding for this venture besides the proposal.

  53. I will participate but only if Mr Sata is not the President. I don’t trust my investment to be safe with a man who goes to bed at night with one view and wakes up with a contrary view next morning!

  54. i’ll wait to see how this fares before i jump in. Any reasonable investor knows you never jump onto a band wagon just because you like what you hear you have to look at how the investment vehicle floats, returns and survives. As a zambian I know naturally paranoid about such because zambians are the best sweetest talkers and conmen when it comes to business. I don’t believe in feel good stories with patriotic sentiments and promises I believe in provable results and returns. If this thing takes off you have my full support .$50 a week is a hell of a lot for a pipe imaginary dream, can I just ask if this thing fails will the investors get compensated?

  55. I have that amount with me now $13,000,000. Lets strike a deal chishimba wa chanda! Its a good idea tho alot of vital info missing! Do more research……………………………:x

  56. No ways mate…$2600×5= $13,000(K60,000,0000) in 5years. Mean wood plot@ $30,000,000, foundation@30,000,000. There you go! call it property development if you like

  57. Guys, while this debate is raging some of us have moved a long way with our investment club. We even have options and a “side-effect” loan scheme for situations of need (strictly payback but without interest). When Chishimba advocates US$50 he is giving a template – you DO NOT have to use US$50. Project your investment then begin at the levels that you can afford. And it doesn’t have to be central place (i.e. USA for everybody in the diaspora). It has to be context-based depending on the banking/investment laws of the peculiar environment you are in. The longer you debate the more opportunities you are likely to lose.

  58. Anna mwale was last accussed to have stolen her own chickens she had invested in by an unlce she had a black out at lusaka central police

  59. According to the proposal, its like the idea is to start a business from scratch and then immediately raise to a very high scale and high impact venture of the tune of millions of dollars. I do not know of many successful companies that started this way. Most businesses start small, build a good reputation with clients and use that as a launching pad to grow the business bigger. It would be easier to identify a business which is already established but lacks large capital. You buy off the business and grow it to the tunes of millions of dollars.

  60. 419. BEWARE. THIS GENTELMAN MAY NOT BE USING HIS ACTUAL NAME. INVEST AT YOUR OWN PERIL. PLEASE LET US CONTINUE SUBSIDISING OUR UNDERPRIVILEDGED RELATIVES BACK HOME. THE FACT THAT WE ARE CUTTING THOSE FAT JUICY TBONES DOES NOT MEAN OUR RELATIVES BACK HOME ARE DOING THE SAME. SO BANE CONTINUE DONATING TO YOUR RELATIVES BACK HOME.

  61. If wishes were horses even beggar’s would ride, so goes the saying!! Without trying to discourage anybody, your idea sounds “too grandiose”, Sir. Sounds like a good idea but there is just too many details missing.

Also the short time frame for all this makes it look like something someone is trying to slap together out of desperation. What is the rush?! If I may ask. Take your time and develop your idea further, then come back and sale it again. Although we may all be Zambians living abroad, most of us living abroad are still strangers to one another, therefore, CREDIBILITY and TRUST is not yet on your side, Sir. More needs to be done before you can convince 5000 people to give up $50/week for 52 weeks of their hard-earned cash for this.

    Good luck though!!!!!!

  62. The big elephant is missed in this article. How do you build a house without foundation? The foundation for Zambians in diaspora need to be secure , fully appreciated , invest and develop Zambia is dual citizenship (DC) . In my personal opinion there should be more articles pushing for DC proposal than all these schemes. Such articles fail to incorporate the important things Zambian need to be hearing in diaspora to invest in Zambia heavily. Seriously, when is dual citizenship going to be passed? It is important to push for the basic… Look at the western world and countries like Ghana they have gained so much investment and intellectual capital because of their dual citizenship stance.

  63. I think this is a very grand idea but it would indeed need some fine tuning. For you doubters – all you need to do is come up with a counter proposal that is better than that or at least expose the weaknesses. Sitting down should not be an option. An idea has just been thrown in the ring – So digest it.

  64. Typical Zambian mentality. Always shooting an idea before it has even taken off. Or better still throwing all kinds of negative jibes before someone has even done anything concrete. Colonialism and slavery is still rife in a lot of you. Utuntemba tatwakamitwale nangu kumo. You will be watching the Chinese producing inflated chickens in your own backyards.

  65. This does not sound like a workable plan as it has too many gaps. People donating $50 a weekly is too much. The author has not explicitly told us what the shareholding structure will be. How profits are going to be shared and it seems they have too many ideas that they would like to implement without stating exactly what they want to do. This, if not well thought out will lead to the author eating people’s money.

  66. The devil is in the details and since there are non in this article, it is damn near impossible to formulate a response. So, let the author put his ideas through a peer review process and see if it passes.

  67. #91 I believe that everything in life is a process. What Chishimba has done is set the ball rolling and hopefully get people that are like minded on board. It is not possible to work with everyone and there are bound to be people that are going to oppose. An idea like this one needs people with different an relevant skills to jump on in. Kudos to him for even suggesting it.

  68. Bring ptoject proposals to the fore that that show seriousnes and let pipo make a choice to invest in something tangible. For instance if tell me that you are looking for partners in openning up a chain of fitness centres across the country with proper details of the plan and financial projections, I would be more willing to cash in rather than have liquid assets invested in an invisible scheme only best known to the founders.

  69. How I got swindled:
I live in Australia. I have a longtime friend in Zambia. We met at high school and he is now an ACCA. He said to me that he had business prospects in the mines so he suggested we do it together. I was thrilled and geared to do some business and I thanked God because that was just what I wanted to embark. Since him was working in the mines as an accountant I thought that was an advantage.
“What type of business?” I asked,

  70. … My friend said small scale mining. He told me mwanawasa GRZ is encouraging small scale miners to venture into mining. I told my dear friend to write a business proposal so that I could do a few consultations in Australia about the business. He was in a hurry to write one and I took it for advice. I was advised that it was too risk to venture and if I needed funds people are scared to invest in something non existanc….

  71. …..So I reported my findings to my friend in zed and he was not happy because he was sure he would get some funds from innocent Australians willing to invest in his small scale mine.
I then suggested another business idea, “MINE SUPPLY” my friend was happy about it. I asked him where to start from. Knowing that he was working in the mines, I too was happy because I reckon he had connections in the Zambia mining industry….

  72. So I thought of a brilliant idea of how our business will initially start. I approached a company called blackwoods and asked managent if my company can be in a contract of a middle man kind of business. To my supprise blackwoods was willing. And at that time they were in the process to find a company in cental Africa which should work as a marketing agent….

  73. I was happy guys… Now the whole ball was left in my friend’s hands. I told him what transpired at blackwoods and he sounded happy too. I said, ” this is it”
my friend told me to send money for company registration. I sent $200 usdollar. My friend got the money and stories started from that time on wards. Meanwhile blackwoods was waiting for me to deliver my company documents so that our contract can start……..

  74. By the way blackwoods is a multnational company that supplies to the mines different equipment.
All I got were stories from my friend. Next he asked me to send $600 saying that the guys at the register of companies want a share too for them to release the documents. This time I did not send. Fortunately he apologised and confessing that he did not pay for company registration. I ran mad.
My conclusion is if you want to do business ask your mother to help if not do it alone like UPND. I will never trust a Zambian.

  75. CKS,
As most comments suggest, it is a bit ambitous to hope to convince 5000 people to part with 50$ a week.
With those that are serious, your ideas are achievable. However, these are not new ideas. There are investment
vehicles that have already been formed, with tangible investments in Zambia. Maybe you and those that are serious
should have a look at double-udouble-udouble-u dot zinitz dot com.
Like any other investment, there is a risk so assess your options carefully. Indeed, it is those that take a risk
who reap the rewards. Thats way probably not aeveryone is an investor or businessman.

  76. Please come up with a business venture proposal, show us that it will be viable and we will happily invest. Why do you start by collecting money. People don’tt invest if they are not sure that the business is feasible and viable or that the people running the venture are experts and credible.

  77. This is not new. There are some, started by Zambians here in the UK which have even started some operations in Zambia already. I know this may sound negative but I have tried some of them and I always end up with the same old thing. NOTHING.

The people in the forefront, the ones who manage the money are always the problem. They start getting greedy, deliberately inflate the overheads, begin claiming expenses, just rampantly abusing the the funds. In one scheme 50 couples invested £1000 each almost five years ago, to my knowledge no one so far has seen any hope of receiving any returns and yet the so called Chairman and his finance guy are always on the planes to Zambia and back.

I even tried small partnership just arguments through and through. No profits, always refunding…

  78. #103 Could not agree with you more. Tried it here in England and it made my life hell. Arguments and counter proposals before the business even took off. I came to the conclusion that it is a Zambian thing. Maybe in another generation.

  79. The worst part is when these same chaps take “official trips” to Zambia, they are accorded meetings with government officials, high profile business executives who see these schemes as brilliant initiatives. They offer good advice, and expose these lucrative business opportunities to the Chairman and his people. What do they do, they come back here and keep quiet about it. Next, you begin hearing rumours that they are doing other businesses in Zambia, you can’t challenge them because they are the ones who came up with the idea in the first place, they say. They forget that yes, they may have thought of the idea first, but- together you developed the idea into a business model and therefore its not their idea alone. My advice is, choose your partners wisely or save buy land in zed,…

  80. Tough luck guys. That is exactly why I chose to come back quick pa Zed. Zed disease is the principal reason for our poverty. A good Zedian is a dead one trust me. I had to be swindled only once to trek back & do things myself. Chishimba’s idea is a perfect one in terms of the target venture capital figure. My brother Chishimba, I see your mind is working unlike those typical Zed skeptics scared to lose a paltry $50/week. I faced the same bullshit in Botswana. Good luck mate.

  81. “I believe this will effectively work once communities and individuals in Diaspora are well able to support each other through hard-times and relief on issues that affect us while abroad.” And again we can look at reducing the figure to $10 per member, per month.

I don’t trust the government, later on you handling my 50bucks.
