Kabwata Member of Parliament Given Lubinda has challenged the Electoral Commission of Zambia to stop the TV campaign adverts of President Rupiah Banda.

Mr. Lubinda said the adverts being aired on national television are illegal and that the ECZ should stop them from being shown.

He said that it was unfair for the ruling party to take advantage of its incumbent status by airing political campaign adverts on national television while stopping other political parties from doing the same.

Mr Lubinda said that no announcement of the elections date has been made; hence the campaign adverts of President Banda receiving airplay are illegal.

Speaking In an interview with QFM News, Mr Lubinda challenges the ECZ to show its strength by taking action against the MMD

  1. Anyway, Za Yellow Lubinda has a point. The electoral commission needs to demonstrate it has power and Independence by ordering MMD to NOT ONLY STOP airing those TV adverts , but they should go further and ask the MMD to rREMOVE BILLBOARDS AT EVERY CONSTRUCTION site showing the face of RB with a message like working for you bla bla. This is simple and pure campaign and unfair advantage the MMD has.

    Today if you go to Ndola near the new stadium you will find RB’s billboard. Go to any of these hospitals being constructed or any road being constructed  you will see RB ‘s face. Why is his face there as if he is one of the firm constructing these infrastructures?

    This is illegal and ECZ need to show us that they can be trusted and  Act Now against MMD!!!

  4. While the laws are there, ECZ behaves like a toothless bull dog. It is just bloated and extremely incompetent when it comes to dealing with illegalities committed by govt & MMD. The strangest thing apart from announcing dates for by-elections, is that entire ECZ leadership acts like they have no idea what the Electoral Act deals with

  6. PF whether you cry or remain silent you are losing the coming elections, as your party only has jokers for leadership. Your combination with UPND represented a good team to move the economy, but the day when you chased upnd you kissed power. Zambians are not intereted to remove MMD and replace it with people without any agenda for the nation, hence they would rather stay with the same MMD. The facts on the ground are that, you never looked at a bigger picture when you chased UPND from the pact. You insulted HH and called him names because you felt you were more popular than him, but you will be punished for your bad attitude towards others who mean well for you.

  7. We want fair play. The ECZ should not be biased. Let them stop those political adverts. Zambians should also stop paying TV Licence if ZNBC will only be used by the MMD!

  10. Za yelo, just ask Sata to do the same. Let him put up bill boards where he has initiated developmental programmes. You will just lose, Za yelo. You are in a wrong camp which will never rule in zambia. And why don’t you stop the post from campaigning for you. ZNBC is owned by govenment let it serve their bosses which is GRZ.     • I believe the bosses of ZNBC are the ZAMBIAN peeople (not MMD) thus fair play should be addressed…as ssimple as that!

  12. Lubinda is right. The only problem is that ZNBC in a state owned media. The ruling party controls the station. Directors and programme managers are just date stamps of the owners of ZNBC.

    The other alternative for the opposition is to use private TV and radio stations for their campaign messages.

    I don’t think ECZ has a backbone to stop these campaign messages by RB. ECZ just like ZNBC is givernment owned. So professionalism is compromised.

    Putting the portrait of RB on bill boards where some developments are taking place is wrong. Constructions are not done by RB or RB does not use his personal money to fund these projects. They are funded by Zambian people through tax. Even loans for such projects are paid by Zambians and not RB. RB is also paid by Zambians.

RB should just announce the day of elections, dissolve, parliament and open the doors for everyone to start campaigning. But this being an interesting show, he will hold on to announcing the date till he has finished showing his “developmental” projects. ZNBC should be ashamed of it self. Why should the president be the one to announce the date if he is the participant in the show? It is like having a referee cum from a competing team. And do we trust ECZ that is appointed by RB and now they are already showing double standards by letting their Boss campaign while stopping others. Zambians!! what year do u think this is?   28. But I was under the impression that no one watches ZNBC so why upanga chongo bo Lubinda? As for those who are saying it is unfair for RB to announce the date of the election, well that is what you get with the Sata sponsored constitution of 1996 we are currently using. The constitution bill that has just failed because of the collusion of the two opposition parties was going to bring a fixed term for the president which means everybody would know exactly when the election would be held. Never throw away the baby with the bathwater and it is extremely foolish to cut off your nose to spite your own face.

  29. The Big Issue here is not about MM, PF or UPND. It is about ECZ standing up to show they are not boot-lickers. Some comments from above just show how some people have no brains to understand issuesa. Lubinda is talking for all. Fairness by the ECZ. Silence by the ECZ is already showing they are bias. They don’t have usefulness despite consuming lots of money for nothing. This are reason Zambia should use PVC because ECZ is already compromised.

    We will not accept MMD wining. War is coming, start preparing to chase RB dead or alive.

PF complaining about anything and everything.You must understand that the only time ECZ INTERFERES with political campaigns is when the period of campaigning has been appointed by them.This is usually after the elections date has been announced.I’m afraid,for the time being MMD WILL TAKE MAXIMUM advantage of incumbency without any shame and illegality on their part.It will be foolish for any cook to starve when he/she is the one preparing meals.MMD will have themselves to blame if they do not legitimately take advantage of their incumbency status.As for RB’s pictures,why complain of isolated developmental places where these bill Boards are when his pictures are literally in all offices public or private.Should they be removed just because 2011 is election year?

  35. # 24 you have never seen a new bill board being put for RB? Go to N/Western province.The so called Mutanda Chavuma road is being advertised with those billboards and right now…one is being placed in Kabompo and this will go on to Chavuma.Wat can u tell us.people know wat is happening now.

  42. The reason why Gov. decided to put these posters is because of the negativity coming from the oppostion who claim that MMD Gov is doing nothing! Just to let the pepole know, they decided to remind them that MMD Gov under the able leadership of HE RB have things happening everywhere. The opposition especially PF are to blame for claiming they don’t see anything the MMD Government is doing. So in short those are not campaign posters they are positive messages to people who are being bombaded by negativity everyday by the Yakumbuyo Post and PF. Sane Zambians know that they can change their government democratically whenever they want to do so because they enjoy full democratic rights.   49. The Post does not campaign for Sata. All it does is point out the mistakes RB and MMD are making. The Post in a normal society could regarded as the only paper telling the stories as they are. So, stop vilifying the paper for bring out the truth about RB. Ask yourselves why Daily Mail, Times of Zambia or even ZNBC has never discussed the arms deal with SA. Ask yourselves why they never discussed Thandiwe’s Ghost Worker crime. Now if The Post brings out what your RB and MMD are trying to hide, to you that means they are campaigning for Sata. No, just accept the wrongs RB and MMD are making. Why are you guys so afraid of The Post? 

    On the Billboards (generic name), I was just wondering if these buildings are MMD sponsored. MMD and government must be two separate entities. BACK to UNIP. 

    • I am shocked to read this from you. I think that every sober person who reads the post knows that the post is campaigning for Sata. They try to show that Sata in Holy, Blameless, a savour, man of action etc. The post will maginify whatever NEGATIVE news talks about MMD and Ingore what ever is positive about the MMD and the opposite is true about sata and PF. This explains the messages on TV, the Bill boards and Chanda Chimba’ programs. This are strategies the MMD has put in place to prove Sata and the PF wrong. So tell me what is wrong with that. Let sata also start using the electronic media for his messages. After all we know how much his gay friends have given him.

  56. #52 Dance kubeba, sorry it does not happen that way in real life! If we all chose what the government could do with our tax money, only the rich would benefit. They would probably choose a tarmac driveway to the front of their houses rather than books for children in Twatasha township, no one would build the Mongu-Kalabo road too or Mutanda-Chavuma highway, or even buy mobile clinics for the rural poor. It would be each one for himself, same as not paying tax!

  62. Sata is simply testing his own medicine. He was very powerful in the cabinet that did not change the public media to be better than they are today. He also had chance to leave us with a better electoral system when enacting the 1996 constitution but all they did in Parliament was sing Kaunda alala. Sata will therefore have to compete under the current system which he left. Good luck to him and his cadres. In the unlikely event that he wins this year’s election he is never going to change the surrent system on both the media and the electoral system. Subtle as he is, he has already enlisted the Post to help him beat RB and the government ‘propaganda’ media. Fair enough isn’t it?

  67. To conclude the debate, there is nothing bad that PF can accuse anybody of doing without also pointing a finger at itself. That is the tragedy of Mr Sata and his PF, he is well documented in the Post, all his misdeeds as complete as the bible.

Those RB billboards are all over the country and their purpose is purely campaign! if PF and UPND put up such billboard there would be uproar from Shikapwasha and Dora. Look at the adverts on ZNBC at prime time viewing time featuring RB, surely that is campaigning but as usual government machinery has maintained them. Anyway in a few months the pipo are going to choose who they want to govern them

No 43-what is wrong about Michael Chilufya Sata?What has he done to deserve such hate from you?Are you God to declare disastor upon the image of our creator?Who are you that you can condemn what is in the make?You can not change what is and that you truly know, If Sata is meant to be president he shall definitely be and no doubt about it.

    Some of these who are presidents were not meant to be, they got it through dubious means. Change of Governemnt is inevitable and it is coming this year! Allow others to put up billboards too

  77. Iwe Chomba you should first go to school! ZNBC can’t be compared to the Post. Its a public or state owned company. MMD is not the State. MMD can’t use ZNBC for partisan purposes. It belongs to all of us PF MMD etc and should therefore serve us not MMD. We will take ZNBC to court for allowing itself to be used for political motives.
