Bank of Zambia officially reverses the sale of Finance Bank

Bank of Zambia has officially reversed the $5.4 million sale of Finance Bank to South Africa’s FirstRand on today, returning the bank to its previous shareholders.

The move was expected after newly elected President Michael Sata said this week he would stop the sale of Finance Bank to South Africa’s second-largest lender, in his latest move against the policies of the previous administration.

The central bank seized Finance Bank from its shareholders in 2010 for legal violations, including insider lending. Finance Bank’s chairman has said the seizure was politically motivated.

The Bank of Zambia said in a statement that Finance Bank had been handed back to previous shareholders as of today , and that it would continue normal operations.

  1. Excellent news. This just goes to show how corrupt the previous administration was. FNB said they were waiting for more details. Why are they not putting up a fight? Something is wrong here.

I hope who ever wanted to sale this bank is brought to book. Yazanda nomba RB! Dora we are still waiting for you. You watch.

  2. 1. Mathani was Mwanawasa’s friend nd he was shielded from prosecution. 2. Rupiah had a personal grudge against Mathani because of his default on some loan repayment. 3 When Rupiah became president, Mathani no longer sponsored mmd 4. and started sponsoring PF. 5 Sata has to pay his dues to Mathani and all who supportd him. And now ladies and gentlemen we ‘donchi kubeba’ coz this our beloved zambia is the real Africa!!!:)>-:)>-

  3. We still deserve to know the truth. Give us all the facts of the transaction so that we know who is doing the right thing. What reason do I have to say what Sata is doing is O.K.? In the same way we were asking for transparency from Dora & co, the current administration should do things transparently.

  4. @10. Leo. They didn`t even pay. Ke ke ke ke ke ke! The deal was going to be finished after RB “won” the elections.

  5. I am sure they did not release the money. Which sane person can pay money to a government that is about to face elections. RB and sons needed the money but FNB delayed paying. If RB won FNB will be paying him today and the sons will be sharing the commission. But we did donchi kubeba on him.

  6. The late Chiluba had a strong hand into all this. Chiluba was shocked when he realised his persecutions by Levy had the blessing of his Carlingtone saga for! It ought to be admitted Mathani laundered money but to finance PF among others. It was this, among other factors, that agitated RB and Chiluba. Much of the financing was via Father Bwalya!

  7. good move (SATA) for the real Zambians who love Zambia with all their hearts, thats the problems with people from the farms cause they sell things like in a kantemba

  8. What happens to the 2010 violations? Is true that this man was being compensated astronomical amounts for being imprisoned by Chiluba?

  9. THE SURPRISING THING IS NO ONE HAS TOLD US WHY BOZ MOVED INTO FBZ IN THE FIRST PLACE? IF THE BANK WAS IN POSSESION BY BOZ, WHY WAS IT NOT RETURNED TO BOZ IF THE SALE WAS NOT EFFECTED? WHY DID THEY SHORT CIRCUIT AND GIVE BACK DIRECTLY TO MAHTANI? WILL THE CRIMINAL COURT CASES AGAINST MAHTANI BE NULLIFIED? WE NEED THE COMMISION ANNOUNCED BY HEMS TO CONTINUE. LAST QUESTION CAN BOZ GUARANTEE THAT OUR DEPOSITS ARE SAFE OR DOES THE BANK NEED TO RE-CAPITALIZE SO WE DO NOT LOSE OUR SAVINGS

  10. This man is said to be very clever at eating with almost each Govt. Let us wait and see. It will not be long before we hear the deal behind this handing back! If there were no rules broken, its ok, but what about the 2010 rules violated????Mind you Zambia is not the same as the one you left 10 or 12 years ago when you were in Govt. People are excited but soon the excitement will be over and  they will expose you  to the same news maker who raised your profile.By the way, Don’t  break this ladder because others will use it the way you have used it.

  11. :) What Sata has done in 2 week, RB failed to do in 3yrs. Finance bank is back Zambians, out of the grasp of shameless thieves. Mr. president Zamtel is next!!

  12. FNB were just ugly chancers. When the sale was first announced, chibamba kanyama was quoted by the Post warning any would-be bidders that purchasing the bank under the given circumstances was suicidal!

    • LivingFit365 on November 19, 2008 I’m the oirginal owner of a 2003 Sorento. 75k miles so far. It’s been off-road, city, highway. I drive 60 miles each day. I never once had to look under the hood. Drives perfectly, runs perfectly, still in great shape. The styling is still modern and people think it is new amazed when I tell them it’s an ’03! I highly recommend KIA! Much better than a GM, just as good or maybe better than Honda or Toyota, best value for the dollar fully loaded. I highly recommend checking out KIA.

  13. If FNB are so eager to invest in Zambia let them build there own branches and lets see where that chump change $5 milly will take them…. BUFFOON RB & Co were just vindictive petty thugs given the chance would have sold everyone of us to the foreign investors!!
    Utterly disgusted!!!

  14. The amount was too petty why can they review us the finding so that RB ,Dora and Mutati can start going to Court..they re in HOT SOUP..George Kunda can commit sucide,,,nayopa

  15. Why is everyone excited here as if Finance Bank belongs to the GOVT or The Zambian pipo? Hello!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The bank stilll belongs to an Indian.

  16. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THE FUEL IMPORTATION DOCUMENTS DONE BY FBZ FROM 2006 till 2008. YOU WILL FIND FBZ CHARGED 5700 TO THE $ WHILE THE EXCHANGE RATE WAS BETWEEN 3800 AND 4100. A LETTER OF CREDIT WAS OPENED ON A MONTHLY BASSIS TO A VALUE OF $40 MILLION SO FBZ MADE A CLEAN PROFIT OF K76BILLION ON THE EXCHANGE RATE EVERY MONTH. IS THIS NOT THE ZAMBIAN PEOPLES MONEY. DO WE WANT TO PULL OUT CORRUPTION FROM THE ROOTS OR NOT. WYNTER DO YOUR JOB. DOCUMENTS OF THESE LETTERS OF CREDIT ARE IN ERB, BOZ, MINISTRY OF FINANCE, MINISTRY OF ENERGY AND FBZ. WE WANT TO KNOW THE FUEL PURCHASE TRANSACTIONS THROUGH FBZ. WE WANT TO KNOW WHY BOZ MOVED INTO FBZ

  17. Fact is Mahtani is a criminal, a smooth criminal.
MCS is not our Mr clean but he will do us a lot more good than RB would ever have done.

  18. Leonardo @10, to begin with, you are presuming FNB already paid for the sale, which we do not know at this time. Secondly, if they did pay, they will be repaid what they paid. If the paid any kickbacks to anyone, either at BOZ or the MMD or Banda and his family, then that’s a loss FNB will just have to grin and bear because the PF government is not and should not pay for that. As Jay @22 observes: If FNB are so eager to invest in Zambia let them build there own branches and lets see where that chump change $5 million will take them…. Indeed it is a real challenge to FNB to prove their sincerity and interest in investing in Zambia by coming through and opening their own Bank from scratch.

  19. thats why the cry continues..these important govt institutions shd run independently..but as we can see bank of zambia is at it again dancing to the tune of the master..they have not even given as a reason for reversing their decision

  20. @26 has some data..looks like FBZ still has some smelly shit that needs to be investigated……We the kind cobra to continue with the commission..or has he been advised that it will spit a lot of shit.

  21. Mathani also did corrupt deal which he need to be investigat him we wellcome da move by pf but them man mathani sticks of corruption

  22. i don’t understand why Zambians think FBZ belongs to Zambians it belongs to INDIANS and Pakistanis and a few Zambians that Mahtani paid off he pretended that they owned the shares when he actually owned their shares….wake up Zambians mr sata is just paying back a debt at your expense

  23. The FBZ workers are in deep trouble. No salary increment for two years. Now the Bank of Zambia has allowed a person who the late Mwanawasa didn’t allow to be MD. PF what are you doing?
