The National Union of Communications Workers – NUCW has challenged the Zambia Development Agency -ZDA- to clear the air on the intricacies surrounding the sale of ZAMTEL to lap green of Libya.
The union is concerned with latest unconfirmed media reports that the sale of the telecoms firm might have been marred by irregularities.
NUCW President Patrick Kaonga told ZNBC News on Tuesday that the nation needs to be put in a clear picture on the sell of ZAMTEL and not rely on mere speculation.
And when reached for a comment, ZDA Director General Andrew Chipwende says it will be premature to comment on the matter as government has already intimated that cabinet will soon make a decision on the sale.
Mr. Kaonga says his union has tried to meet ZDA management over the matter but the meeting has failed to materialize.
He says the sale of ZAMTEL to lap green may have serious implications on the future of the telecommunication firm in the wake of unfolding revelations.
Last week the commission constituted by President Michael Sata to scrutinize the sale of ZAMTEL to Lap green established that the transaction was illegal and fraudulent.
The air is always murky in Zambia
so what next?
are they going to re-hire all the ex workers?
Just normalise the sale and pump money into social services.
Communication costs have dropped tremendously ever since they sold Zamtel, makes me wonder whether we were subsidizing inefficiencies or bankrolling MMd through the historic high tariffs.
I thought this sale was clear from the begining that it was mared by irregularities and only benefited the politicians who were in power then…Dora and Banda and Sons. why even waste time trying to make things difficult for Zambians, reverse the transactions and make a better deal for Zambians. Learn from the president of Venezuela and how he negotiates with multi national firms…..Zambians wake up, last admin was running a company.
You NUCWU are all idots. You where busy supporting the sale of zamtel and now you want to look like you are angels and questioning the sale now. You went round the country explaining to Zamtel workers why the company should be sold and today you are questioning the decision.
Just let sata grab the Zamtel back. Kasonde, Kaonga, Zulu and the rest members of that union should keep out of this!!!
let them reverse the sale we shall watch and laugh at how ZAMTEL is going to collapse, the NGN network suppose to be completed by 2013 will not be there, and zambia will continue to experience high internet and telephone changes, ZAMTEL will go back to using the PSTN exchanges…these people who have no knowledge of telecommunications are *****s, they cant see the benefits of LAP-GREEN what a shame.

‘And when reached for a comment, ZDA Director General Andrew Chipwende says it will be premature to comment on the matter as government has already intimated that cabinet will soon make a decision on the sale’. In other words, right or wrong we cannot say anything that contradicts the presidential will, regardless of the cost to the nation.
A man while making love to his maid..exclaimed!!’martha your ar sweeter than my wife”….. The maid smiled and said “i know coz the driver always tell me so..
Zamtel book value: $81million,
RP Capitals evaluation of Zamtel worth: $38million
LAP Green paid: $257million
#8 Gagande……………………..Meaning?
Patrick Kaonga (Transmission Technician, GN283) and NUCW, just keep quiet as I can confirm that you were part of the negotiating team especcially on payments relating to employees. You are a third party murderer for causing death by inflicting suffering to most former employees. This is immorality of the highest order. Uli kayanga wanvwa!!!
@Mr Phiri. U sound wel informed bt it surprises me to learn that u wud rather let alone ze sale of Zamtel. If it was sold illegally as alleged, then normalizin its sale wud be justified. So far, its clear that it was undervalued and most former employees were underpaid. Of course, ze benefits of NGN are magnanimous bt that does not correct past errors. Lap green should pay ze right value. U ll only laugh at yoself once u learn that u ve taken the wrong side.
@OG, it was stated by the “supposedly” intelligent Mr Sebastian that Zamtel had a book value of  $81million, and 75% of it was sold for $257million. How much was ZANACO sold for? what was its value and how much were the mines sold for and what were their valuations and mind you the mines were sole while HE MCS was in government. Whether Zambians wants to admit it or not, the ZAMTEL privatisation was the best privatisation Zambia has ever seen.
