Corrupt Police officers – as evidenced by lavish lifestyles warned

Share

Give us a bribe...Traffic police officers confront a public service bus driver at Longacres in Lusaka

Home Affairs Minister Kennedy Sakeni has warned corrupt traffic officers that the law will soon catch up with them.

He says his office is concerned at the continued reports of corrupt practices among some officers which was evident with the lifestyle they were leading.

Mr Sakeni has wondered how a traffic officer can amass wealth worth K1 billion and yet his salary was only below K3 million.

Mr Sakeni says his office is aware that some of the officers make as much as K30 million per week which is never deposited into the government treasury but instead pocketed by themselves.

Mr Sakeni has also directed traffic police officers in Lusaka to control the movement of traffic during peak hour to avoid the chaos.

Mr Sakeni made the directive on Wednesday during a meeting when he paid a courtesy call on Copperbelt Provincial minister Davis Mwila in Ndola.

He says police should not leave the control of traffic to minibus and taxi drivers when it is their responsibility.

And Copperbelt Provincial Minister Davis Mwila has appealed to the minister to look into operational challenges police stations were facing on the Copperbelt.

  1. Not surprised. Whats surprising is why govt has not done anything about this already. if all the fines motorists paid went into the police coffers we would have a police service to be proud of.

  2. iwe mr minister, how much do u get yourself?can u hear your your mouth?diearrhea is coming out of your mouth

  3. SAKENI, that road block at mpika weigh bridge, ndabala and kapiri weigh bridge is hell on earth.i dont know how i can tell you to attract your attention, maybe nkutuke insele. balya baffikala baba mu ma road block aya they are a nuisance they are corrupt to the bone, there is big money in these road blocks and worse is that aba baffikala they will always create a curse so that they twish your arm you succumb to bribing them ni mbwaa.they have even discarded their duty of policing how do you think these somalis in ntrucks end up in ndeke, chaisa or bulangililo aba baffikala bakapokola balishiba ati li dilu, they connive with these drivers so SAKENI,pay attention to this

  4. In regard to the concerns of corruption in police traffic section, i would like to concour with the observation the Minister made. It is also not only the concerns of the miniter but all well meaning zambians. My advise to the police command is to try and rotate police officers from one section to the other on a six months basis. Officers should not only be in one section for queit a long time because they get used to the system, hence torance of duty. In the other way the rotation will give officers broder knowledge on policing matters, becoz they wont be stuck in one section.

  5. There could be many solutions to this problem. One of the key solutions would be to ask officers to issue tickets that are paid at the bank. RATSA’s database can be used to track non compliance and then trebble the charge for non compliance. In short, remove the interaction between humans when settling a traffic offence. Introduce a system, a machine like situation where, you are charged, go and pay, no one can control that. To implement this, you need to reduce the fines to manageable levels, say 100pin.

    • what a stupid name you chose for yourself there, nazis would break your black head for mentioning that evil name especially that you can not even spell properly.

  6. You want us Police Officers to be chewing kapenta every day while you are munching beef, bwana minister?

  7. Introduce data scanning processes for all intercity check points and store in National Bbase that is one way of catching those “Somalis” someone mentioned.

  8. now that malama is gone and you bring in un incompitent IG….what do you expect? i woul wish mr minister to advise ba presido to bring malama back!!!!

  9. one such police officer is Nyambe at chongwe police station. The chap is geting rich every day.He even mounts roadblocks as early as 6?30hrs.eeeeeeerrrr.

  10. Guys as civil servants we dont take any oath of poverty, and being civil servants does not mean that we cant use our brains. do you realise that we only work for 5hrs and go about our business the rest of the time.

    • U sound like the user of article ‘Quartoze’ from one of our neighbours…Be careful how initiative you get……Zambia has laws

  11. I have been driving for more than 20years and have never been asked for a bribe from a traffic officer. Those pipo are well trained under RATSA boss Frederick Mwalusaka, their is no corruption on the roads please, mwilabepa

  12. The other group is in Chingola with there speed gun after Kafue bridge on the way to chililambombwe and Kasompe turn off from Kitwe.

  13. Why does the Minister almost sound envious of the amount of money the Police officers make through their corrupt practices, instead of highlighting the huge damage it causes to the Nation?. Why is he not focusing on the root-causes of their sick behaviour and the solution? He is in essence saying corrupt officers have a better life style than those with good morals and law abiding ones.

  14. This is something that will take for ever to get rid off. These chaps literally stop motorists with the hope that they’ll get bribed for stupit offences if anything. It’s good that the minister has addressed the issue but that’s not enough. On the other hand, the cops like many folks in Zed get paid very little and yet the cost of living is ever so high. How how these chaps supposed to be ethical while carrying out their “duties”??? Corruption is a B.I.T.C.H.

  15. @ 17 patambala, you must be a cop or you work for RATSA. What do you mean there’s no corruption on the roads???? Are freaking kidding me? Just because you haven’t been stopped that doesn’t mean there’s no corruption. Zambian cops are the worst next to SA cops for taking bribes at a drop of a dime. Get real serious son, really!

  16. So if you earn less than 3 million kwacha you can amass wealth more the K1bn? If you can invest wisely with the little you have you can make a fortune. In Zambia, we still have the mentality of if one is rich then he stole or killed someone along the way, that is a backward way of thinking. Of course there is high corruption in the public sector but some wealth is also legitimate. That is the reason why the police needs to have an internal affairs team so they can deal with such issues. This is also the reason why we need young fresh minds in leadership so they can come up with new ways of handling issues and processes. So sad that 50 years on and ZP still wear the same khaki uniforms with those stupid hats and oversize reflective vests……shame indeed. No wonder corruption can’t end.

  17. I remember skinny undernourished policemen with dry lips under the scorching Zambian sun 30 yrs ago begging for “cocacola & mishanga” who would have thought that they would become day time robbers in State uniforms? :o

  18. In SA cops own Mini Buses it’s just in Africa where cops will be rich, if the system of government management system is poor they will take an opportunity, morals in Zed are history, check and balance are unheard of, those caught because of corruption is out of friendships gone sour and are reported….SWOT analysis is equally needed to curb all this nonsense of non-accountability….where are the master holders to implement…intellectuals have failed Zed

  19. Let us not discourage enterpreneurship!!!!! It is not like we have a reliable pension system like our friends in the West and East. Secure people’s future, but also encourage them to be enterpreneurs at the same time as long as they declare interest or they do not tender within the same organisation. Otherwise, you will never stop the presence of of Kapatos(… or whatever the name of that crook HR guy at Min. of Health???). All ministers and permanent secretaries live beyond their means, why not their surbodinates????

  20. It is possible that patambala has been avoiding traffic police or is a relative to one of them or he just got fired from some mission somewhere.Do you need your IP address and a serial number of your computer plus all your files to be exposed here?

  21. I want to point out my passion for your generosity supporting all those that require assistance with that topic. Your special dedication to passing the solution along ended up being especially advantageous and has permitted professionals just like me to get to their endeavors. Your own warm and friendly guide can mean a whole lot to me and even further to my colleagues. Many thanks; from each one of us.
