Chilanga police have finally released a MUVI TV video camera they confiscated on allegations that a journalist from the institution used it to capture a brutalized suspect in the missing ivory case.

However the footage has since been erased before releasing the video camera.

The release of the video camera comes barely a day after MUVI TV legal representatives gave police a seven day ultimatum.

Meanwhile Human Rights Commission Director Enock Mulembe, has strongly condemned the detention on Thursday of two journalists Bruce Mwale from Muvi TV and Delphine Zulu from Times of Zambia for following up the country’s biggest ivory theft scandal.

Mr. Mulembe says journalists had the duty to inform the nation of developments in the ivory theft case and that police has no justification for stopping journalists from doing their duties.

And Mr. Mulembe has charged that police abrogated the law of the rights of suspects when they tortured a suspect allegedly involved in the ivory scam.

He says the Zambia police service is by law not allowed to torture a suspect regardless of the circumstances.

On Friday Lusaka district Police Commissioner Charity Katanga dared MUVI TV to report her to the Inspector General of police over the confiscated video camera.

Mrs. Katanga told MUVI TV news in a telephone interview, Friday, that the television station was not suppose to capture the suspect linked to the missing ivory scam.

Ivory worth about two billion Kwacha has since gone missing from the Zambia Wildlife Authority-ZAWA- storeroom and police have since apprehended two game scouts in connection with the alleged crime.

  1. mapolo apolice, katanga nyini yako inyelekeza mangi are you attending a prolonged monthly period? Fuseke

  2. Ba MUVI TV, you should invest in more up-to-date technology where you can report in real time and / or stream video clips back to base in real time. Then there will be nothing for the Police or whoever to erase. This is a no brainer. This in itself will make the brutal Police keep their distance, and you will be safer.

    • While I appreciate your point of view, In the other hand I wish to remind you that such countries using those technogy are developed ones.. they cost alot of money whereby Muvi Tv can not afford. Evev video cameras aren’t found in roads and public places to help truck out criminals and movement of traffic.

  3. Honestly at this rate of Human Rights and office Abuses that this Lusaka Province Commissioner Charity Katanga is committing, she is heading for prosecution like former Lusaka MMD Chairman William Banda.

Katanga is behaving public as a PF cadre forgetting that she is a Public civil servant in the government of the Zambia.

Katanga should not forget that other big fishes like Generals in the Army has been prosecuted for abuse of office.

Katanga let me tell you that jails and the cases at the court of law are waiting for you! You will be paraded before the very Zambians you are abusing right now.

Sata and PF wont help you in the Court of law let alone paying for lawyers to represent you!

I feel sorry for you Charity Katanga!

  4. Does MUVI TV have the balls to take this to court?

This is a winnable case under intellctaul property.

POlice erasing footage from reporters cameras?, its totally unheard of in developed countries. jeez!

  5. The Kenya police has confisticated ivory which was destined for Nigeria, The Kenya police are not sure where it came from i think ZAWA and ZP need to go and have a look as this could be part of the consignment that has gone missing. that would be better policing than erasing evidence

  6. Once Sata & PF are voted out then your prosecution wont delay and it will start immediately! Hope you wont collapse like Konga before the very combined investigation team that will interview you!

As Zambians we look forward to the day that you will be prosecuted for all the abuses you have committed so far and you will commit against innocent Zambians!

This Charity Katanga should read what A US military legal counsel said below:
“.. Lieutenant Colonel Sean Madden said generals and commanders should value legal advice to avoid making mistakes.
“…a wise commander will think twice before disregarding the advice of lawyers and keep a good reputation,” he said. “In the US, senior commanders and generals are very careful now because they have seen and learnt from mistakes”

  7. MUVI TV should take the camera to data recovery specialists who will be able to recover the material, especially if it was erased at first level only.

  8. Some journalists are overzealous, getting pictures of suspects just destroys lives. This is not an indictment and splashing pictures in the papers just jeopardises the investigation.
People who are condemning the police have no idea about police work, the human rights rep is talking as if it is the text book case. If he can face a criminal with a gun in his hand, I doubt if he will be quoting the human rights. We are giving to many rights to criminals and terrorists and forgetting about the victims.

  9. #9 Shaka
You should read about torture of Afghanistans by American soldiers, the general is preaching what he does not practice.

  10. Torture is prohibited in our constitution and yet the police who are supposed to enforce the law abrogate this provision in our supreme law of the land with impunity.
Most of the victims of police brutality are poor people and not conversant with the law and their rights and yet most of these NGOs while they can afford lavish workshops are just blabbermouth and impotent when it comes to pertinent issues.
The courts do their best by refusing to admit statements extracted under torture, but cannot initiate ligation on behalf of victims.
We need to be proactive now, protect our rights and stop this nonsense of waiting for PF to be voted out in order to “take action against the police”

  11. Why erase the footage, are they hiding something or is it because some big shots are allegedly behind the theft?

  12. Zambia has enjoyed peace for many years because of our police and our Zambia army. Journalists should know their boundaries.Zambians have always been condemning the police forgetting the work they do to protect their lives with minimal resources. Keep it up ZP

  13. Zambia Police acted in order to safe guard the security of the nation as the footage captured by the journalist would have invited the wrath of NATO by invading Zambia on the pretext of human rights violation like the did in Libya. Furthermore, people would have started murdering each other after watching the footage and that would have caused much suffering as people were going to starve due to the loss of their bread winners. The loss of their bread winners would have caused much poverty which our government is working hard to eradicate in Zambia. Police keep it up and your conditions of service would be improved significantly as more money will be saved by your actions.

  14. Pf has employed people to be infiltrating every website. Money they waste on websites should be used to alleviate poverty

  15. the police brutality no one can support it,wether its pf or any *****,why beat up someone…dont you learn investigation skills, its only done by toture?? if Libonani doesnt take this, will demand his boss the president to act or both face the the law

  16. #24 Nigger. If u thinking its a nightmare unfortunately u are wide awake.. PF is ruling and u should just bite the bullet.. And the more u hate u TONGAS , oh mukafwa na shoko..

  17. My fellow bloggers, lets stick to the point. What are the police trying to hide? Why erasing the footage before releasing the video camera? What is happening to our motherland Zambia? Hope and trust we are not heading for disastrous. Only time will tell
