Africa can only be developed by Africans-KK

Former president Kenneth Kaunda

First Republican President, Kenneth Kaunda, says Africa will only be developed if Africans themselves take the lead.

ZANIS reports that speaking at the 5th graduation ceremony of Cavendish University in Lusaka this morning, Dr. Kaunda said the current economic dilemma of exporting raw materials is detrimental to Zambia’s interests and that it is unacceptable.

He added that tertiary education is critical to development and that the country needs professionals who are able to drive the economy to greater heights.

Dr. Kaunda also said education prepares people for roles in national development which leads to wealth and job creation.

The former first Republican President, who is also Cavendish University-Zambia Chancellor, urged the grandaunds to be selfless and compassionate in their service to the vulnerable and less privileged.

Dr. Kaunda implored them to add value to society and help combat alienation and estrangement, which he said have crept into the Zambian society.

The Former President also thanked the University’s Board of Directors, Staff as well as government for the support rendered to him in his capacity as Chancellor.

He further promised to work with government where possible to ensure some of the challenges the University is facing are addressed.

And Education Minister, John Phiri, said he is impressed with the many achievements the University has scored such as its steadfast growth and consistence, making it a household name.

Dr. Phiri re-affirmed government’s commitment to supporting private universities through such initiatives as Public Private Partnership (PPP) model.

He, however, bemoaned the poor state of public Universities such as the University of Zambia which he said have remained the same as Dr. Kaunda left them.

Dr. Phiri said there is competition for limited spaces at the University with its current 13, 000 students against its original capacity of 2000 students.

The Minister thanked the University for inviting him as guest of honour and called on Zambians to take University education seriously in order to develop the country.

Meanwhile, Cavendish University Deputy Vice Chancellor, Sekelani Banda, noted that the graduation ceremony was testimony of the University’s growth.

Professor Banda announced that Cavendish University has graduated a total of 1, 589 students.

  1. Hahah, wacha nicheke, hahaha. Mwafrika hawezi haya mambo.

  2. True, but so far it is being destroyed by africans like KK who supported plunder, all just out of hatred for kafupi.

    • Number6 , you are a bastard hyena… So if kk supported Chiluba s plunder, then why was he arrested on Christmas day? Swines like you with bad breath are the kaponyas who l blame Jesus for the suffering in your stinking life, when you make your own stupid decisions… go and find a job that l pay better unlike blaming kk…

    • Get your facts right, KK was the only president who really tried to protect Zambian economy, we used to assemble cars in Zambia for ur own Info. Write facts than nonsense. Chiluba is the man who finished Zambia.

    • The Bastard hyena, CNP is at state house bwana, its not me. As we are talking he is pulndering national resources…..

    • Shup up..It is you who don’t know know that desyroyed Zam’s pride.. Who has a short sighted mind.. Thank God he recalled him (kafupi) earlier than expected

    • it amazing that you find such response to #6. there is lots of truth in what you#6 have posted. chaps who don’t have facts on there side will only insult and turn to violence. facts are that when kk took over zambia it was one of the richest nations in the africa. by 1985 all the reserves were depleted, local government authority was broken, health care was on its knees production/manufacturing collapsed and education account was empty. simple facts, no politics. because we want to twist the past it no wonder we want to go back to those days

  3. ITS VERY TRUE WHAT THE FATHER OF THE NATION BA KK HAS SAID.AFRICA CAN ONLY BE DEVELOPED BY AFRICANS .THESE DAYS US AND THE WEST ARE OKLY INTRESTED IN DEMOLISHING INFRASTRUCTURES THAT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED BY THE POPLE OF THE THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES,WE HAVE SEEN AMERICANS AND NATO FORCES DESTROY IRAQ,AFGHANISTAN,LIBYA AND NOW THEY ARE TRYING TO DESTROY SYRIA AND IRAN.THE US AND WEST ARE BEST AT CREATING REBALS AND ARMING THEM TO OVERTHROW THE DULY ELECTED GOVT OF THE DAY IN COUNTRIES THAT HAS OIL ,DIAMONDS AND GOLD.SO AFRICANS MUST NOT DEPEND ON OTHERS.WELL SAID BA K.K.

  4. This is a man who used 12Billion dollars to Support stupid liberation struggles, he was undemocratic, no one could talk like he does under his regime, people were being beaten left right centre, some even died for opposing him, today he wants to act like a saint? Atase. Father of the nation ifyamasushi! He was such a useless leader. he should just sit down!

    • and how many zambians did he empower. by the time he left power less than 5% of zambians owned any property of their own. he directly prevented zambian from getting economic freedom

  5. KK knows better that Africans have failed to develop, can never develop themselves without the West! Anyone who thinks otherwise is living in a fools’ paradise! KK ruled for 27 years, why did he fail? The Africans have been independent from the 60s,and 90% of the continent is still struggling. Does KK know that more than half the African continent survives on “economic hand-outs” from the West.

  6. #6 & 9,which plunder did KK support?when u compare kk and chiluba the man did great things, most of the current zambia infrastructures across the country were built by kaunda,he had his own weakness but his achievements will there 4 generations to come.which structures did kafupi build?as for 9,no country can be at peace if its neighbours are at war ,there will be influs of refuges, guns, violation of other sovereign states which can put u @war,the supporting of liberation struggles of neighbouring countries was ineveitable.peace is more worthy than 12bill dollars.

    • From your analysis if you think Kaunda was a great leader and is a father to your nation then keep your opinion to yourself we chipuba. Take your stupidity elsewhere!

    • There is more than one way to “plunder” a nation. The simple fact is that KK left the nation destitute with problems Zambia has still not gotten over. What kind of legacy is that?

The really scary thing is that people can’t see how PF is determined to repeat his many mistakes – foreign exchange controls, state owned enterprises, suppression of dissent, and of course ….the biggest dream of all…. a return to one party rule. Viva UNIP…. oh, I mean PF.

    • are you seriously asking if KK plundered or not.is it that you are too young or it the word plunder that is a problem

  7. Well said PLANZO. Look at Lusaka all the tallest buildings the University the hospitals and many more major roads, talk of industries in nearly all provinces those Chiluba sold, do you remember Tip Top and Tarino? The big man had brains and he cannot be compared with the current politicians who specializes in corruption.

Give credit where it is due otherwise he should have just said Zambia will only be developed by Zambians. No more wooing of investors no more selling of land to foreigners no exploitation of minerals by foreigners if we don’t have the means to do it lets leave our minerals in the earth’s crust for our children. THE BIG MAN IS RIGHT.

  8. We have always exported raw materials particularly copper except for a small percentage used in the production of cables at ZAMEFA in Luanshya. KK established ZAMEFA.
MMD destroyed everything KK worked hard to accomplish for the country.
For 20yrs they were in power, they admitted having only created a paltry, dismal, shameful less than 250, 000 jobs in the formal sector. No wonder PF govt is now faced with this youth unemployment emergency

  9. Is the chisungu right to say “former first republican president”? I thought it should either be just “first repub. presido” or “former repub. presido”. Kaunda was right by saying we TAKE LEAD. This means others should follow when it comes to our own development. HOWEVER, we lack money, technology and political will to take the lead. So we have been surbodinated to the rear in our own development agenda.

  10. We may have the damn knowledge but we have no money, no technology, no political will, we have an inferiority complex and we just wait for others to develop something then we sweat in scheming to steal so that we can buy that piece of technology. WE ARE JUST CONSUMERS and not INNOVATORS. But Kaunda seriously tried to develop Zambia under the circumstances. What new road or highway did MMD build in 20 yrs?

  11. very wise words from the big man. We need to change our attitude and work hard as a team through focusing on areas where we have comparative advantage. Ensure our education system produces people that can invent and invest unlike the currrent scenario where people leave school and anticipate to be employed in government or private sector

  12. The old man is so right. Only then will all the mental slavery be outta sight. Kaunda is known all over cos of the all good deeds. Some presidents we have had are littlle known cos the their deeds too. Don’t expect man to be flawless when dem flaws are plenty. Chiluba thought he was a saint hence the mistreatment the old man KK had to endure. What did the get from the old man that was stolen from the coffers? Give raspect were  it is due. If you live inna glass house you don’t haffi throw stones. A superberb weekend to all.

  13. #8 KK is the last person who should be telling us that africa can be developed by africans. he ruled for 3 decades and where did he leave us. secondly by built by africans does not mean being built by government. he ruled the country and controlled everything from what we eat to what we grow, when and where we buy consumables. his gov owned very thing and we the people owned nothing. that is not the way you develop africa. so no sir don’t tell us no shit.

    • You devil.. You don’t understand where history started.. Zam was in good position BUT problems in the neighbourhood affected its development.. Stop that senseless thinking

    • Kanjimaano i know truth can be painful. get friends with critical thinking it help to digest true and different views

  14. #14 you have no understanding of the what went wrong.the reason we are in this mess is because of UNIP and KK. if you look at countries that are developing like RSA, Namibia, Rusia and india its people that are driving the economy, people own property and run small businesses not gov. UNIP never really create job, they creased loss making parastaltals and fed them with our reserves. you don’t grow an economy like that. MMD on the other hand, is the modern direction.their thinking is that people should own, run, direct and do things. people should create employment not gov.

    • No no you are offside.. Russia and India are developing alot of poverty is inviding .. Most Russian are leaving after the collapse of USSR.. Just visit any of these you will see for yourself.. Most people want them to sell their military Arsenal and pump the monies into national development

    • ### I beg to differ  just on one or two specifics. the named countries’ developments is chiefly driven by the political elites, and in the case of India and Russia, the social class spectrum is as rife as that of Zambia.

Fact:  KK and UNIP should not have accepted the terms of bailouts of the IMF and World Bank during the 1980s and 90s ( to sort our economy out). These institutions give you( African countries) conditions based on the Western perspectives, Dear me Zambia is not a Western country. So to cut the discourse short, we simply missed out on development for about 20 – 25 years as a result…

    • mr tembo  you are wrong on both counts. all the named countries including the one i did not mention are driven by people not governments. russia  for example after the fall of USSR, opened the banking to private ownership, people were allowed to trade, provide goods and services as private persons. there are more rich people in russia than they were in russia in the USSR.all nations that had an inclination toward socialism all drowned. the survivors had to change

  15. Well spoken KK. As the old adage goes “If it is to be, it is up to me”. Good mindset focused into the future. KK’s message is actually basic common sense, but as can be seen from some of the blogs here, they reflect a lot of self-limiting beliefs and low self esteem. And therein lays the main barrier. But for those of us with an ‘I can’ attitude, doors open and we forge ahead.

  16. Exporting RAW materials IS detrimental. Arguing which government has left a better legacy is only helpful if used as a learning curve for each future government to improve. Each one in turn has made gross errors as well as some achievements but one need look no further than our current infrastructure, education and health facilities or basic provision of clean water and electricity across the country to know something has gone horribly wrong and needs to change. Like any citizen KK is free to make his point and others are free to disagree. It’s all just talking. He/she who plans well and acts will change Zed.

  17. KK… Had Zambia stayed steadfast with the East (China) past colonial struggles and did away with Western aid conditionality. We could have been a decent developed country. Now  that this century has brought back our old partnership with the East, where the sun rises without conditions. We need political leadership that will fight for Zambia’s benefit in all investments deals…

  18. I beg to differ.Africa cannot develop until there’s a seismic cultural shift in attitudes. All the shortcomings in our leaders that we love to point out are present in every one of us.If simple things like keeping our cities clean is such a huge failing then what of the more daunting development? A society that is not disciplined to be diligent about cleanliness is surely not ready for more complex stuff entailed in development.

  19. Finally some sense. We can’t wait for investors to come develop our land — that is not their job. Their job is to make money.
For Zambia to develop, you and I must play our part — whatever that may be.

  20. Africans have been too lazy eg unza has never even produced anything not even a nidle despite having a research and science department.what it has managed to produce are stone throwers and prostutes with fake qualifications and you expect development with this calibre of human resource?
