Police keep vigil after street vendors rioted at Chisokone market in Kitwe

Police in Kitwe this morning fired tear-gas canisters to disperse traders at Chisokone Market who protested against the presence of Congolese traders following the burning to death of a Zambian truck driver at the Kasumbalesa Border Post last week.

The protesting traders destroyed stalls belonging to Congolese nationals in the market

It was hard for a ZNBC News crew to get a clear picture of the situation because of the tear-gas.

Business came to a standstill as stalls were forced to close as the situation became tense.

Traders shouted that they did not want their Congolese counterparts to conduct business at the Market.

Most of the Congolese traders did not show up at the market today.

Meanwhile, wholesale traders from Chisokone Market staged a peaceful demonstration against plans by the Kitwe City Council to move them to Nakadoli Market.

The traders who matched to the Civic Centre demanded to be addressed by the District Commissioner Elias Kamanga who told them there will be stakeholders meeting at 1400 hours on Monday to resolve the matter.

In Lusaka at Soweto market, some Congolese traders were also harassed over the death of the Zambian truck driver an incident which the Minister of Home Affairs condemned.

  1. A very unfortunate situation indeed. Chisokone Market traderz must infact be happy to move to Nakadoli Market which haz ideal fascilitiez, instead of the confuzed situation that obtainz athe town centre now.

  2. Two wrongs can not make a right. It un fortunate that life has been lost. its a plea to my fellow Zambians not to take the law in their hand but rather speak thru normal channels. Not only Zambian drivers are affected in this issue. We have drivers from other SADC countries too.

  3. Are these the first signs of xenophia in Zambia? The police must arrest and detain those kaponyas causing trouble. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs must summon the Congolese ambassador and read him the riot act.

    • read him the riot act and then what? get a blow job? its not about being Kaponyas, its merely protecting your rights as a nation..get rid of that blemish called congolese…give me a single name of a congolaise who has added value to Zambia?

    • Thats not how you protect your rights as a nation. You could merely start a war and cause more bloodshed

  4. Congolese are animals, they cant even grow their own food, all they know is make children they will later on abandon, listen to music and bleach their skins, we surely dont need them, we can do with more space after they have left….its time we sent the Kasais home and let them think about their Barbarism..bloody animals

    • My brother, all men are equal in Gods eyes and it doesnt matter which nationality or race they come from for we are all brothers and sisters. So that is not a nice way or talking about people from other nationality, how would you feel if we zedians can be refered that way by the South Africans you chaps are the first ones to complain.

  5. Patriotism, Nationalism  upholders of the  machinery of the state since its inception. I however do not condone such acts by these Zambian traders, our Congolese brothers have been a part of our Zambia from time immemorial!

May the government please address this telling situation! OR IT WILL BE AN ALL OUT ‘PAYA’ KASAI…

  6. IF KASAIS KNOW THAT THEY ARE PART OF US WHY DO THEY BEHAVE THE WAY THEY DO. ONE TIME MY FATHER WAS CHARGED FOR BEING BLIND AND I PAID MONEY FOR WEARING A TRACK BOTTOM WHICH I HAD COVERED WITH A CHITENGE MATERIAL WHEN I TRAVELED WITH MY FATHER TO MANSA FOR A FUNERAL. ATASE, TO HELL WITH THEM. THEY SHOULD NOT GET AWAY WITH ANYTHING. WHAT ABOUT THE FAMILY OF THE MAN THEY BURNT TO ASHES. CAN YOU IMAGINE WHAT A PAINFUL DEATH IT WAS. WHAT DID HE DO TO DESERVE THAT?

  7. #7 we have not killed any of them. They have burnt to death one of us. We have lived in peace with these brothers for years and fed them for years. It is time for Zambians to stand up from foreign abuse of all sorts. We must kill one Congolese.

  8. HAVE KNOWN CONGOLESE TO BE VERY BAD PEOPLE SINCE I WAS BORN. WHEN U MOVE WITH THEM ON THE BUS THEY WILL SHOW YOU THEY ARE CONGOLESE WHETHER IN ZAMBIA OR ANYWHERE. WHAT A COUNTRY. WISH WE COULD CHOOSE ANOTHER NEIGHBOUR BUT SORRY GOD STOPPED CREATING COUNTRIES LIKE WHAT OUR PRESIDENT SAID. JUST 3 DAYS WITHOUT TRUCKS GOING IN THEIRS COUNTRY THEY HAVE ALREADY STARTED COMPLAINING OF HUNGER. THEY NEED US MORE THAN WE NEED THEM PERIOD.

  9. Congolese are heartless people. They are not a human race…..Anything to do with a congolese national, either Business or just any help rendered, will turn to sour. These are very bad people and i dont know why these chaps are like this. Its really sad to burn a human being like that………..bt what we should bear in our minds is that we also have brothers and sister in that country.

  10. Basopo,They did well to charge you for trying to seduce them. T o hell with loose anrty matako. They know how to treat thgisves from Luapula and Muchinga

    • You are one stupid tonga fool that’s y u are the ruled underclass of the Luapula and Muchinga things u child of dirty smelly tonga C.U.N.T

  11. They have really crossed the line but do we know all the facts that led to our brother being burnt? I blame their shallow minded greedy leaders for what my Kasai brothers have become today. I never thought I would ever see a day where Zambians would actually call for blood. Goes to show you just how many people the Congolese have injured among us. Poor people.

  12. Two issues 1. First and foremost there need to demolish this so called Chisokone market and build something a modern mall that wiill add vaule to the coucil s coffers. the market at nakaodli are good enough.
    2. it is not true to thing the congolese are barbaric to what they did even Zambians are just the same. a friend of mine was hacked with an axe on the Solwezi for stopping to help a victim of a hit and run accident. he was in ICU in chingola for two weeks. let us not make our selves holier than thou. how about the burning of the mosque in kitwe over a football match? lets cndemn these act but not generalise the whole issue and thnkall congolese are barbaric. We who are civilised need to help people not to use emotion. even the statement by govt rea not good enough to for peace.

  13. Please Zambian’s don’t use the death of our fellow citizen to hate on the congolese people, especially in markets that’s so wrong and very un zambian…

  14. The Christian nation seems to be digging into the Old part of the Testament – an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. Very soon we will all become blind and toothless. Therein lies the confusion.

  15. Sad really…all these comments of killing
tomorrow you will wake up and say ati i am a Christian.

Ati zambia is a Christian nation?

  16. eye for an eye leave behind a blind nation. zambia we need to be very care the way we go about this issue

  17. Zambia is a christian nation pls live revenge for God.Those rioters must be delt with. Two wrongs do not make a right.

  18. Then Zambian Driver who was burnt to death knocked down and killed two Congolese and injured two more in a truck accident.

  19. The Bemba driver was wrong to kill innocent people in Congo with his truck, iam sure he had no licence since he is/was bemba MHSRIP but attacking innocent congolese who dont even know this Bemba man is wrong, let the law take its course, arrest the pipo that burnt the Bemba man, if it was a Tonga nobody would riot in Zambia.

  20. KASAIS ARE SAME AS BEMBAS. I CANT DIFFERENTIATE THE BEHAVIOUR. THE POMPOSITY, ARROGANCE, LACK OF RESPECT OF OTHER TRIBES, ETC

  21. Zambian’s are nice and civil people by nature but when pushed, we have proven to be effective in dealing with lunatics. Let them feel the wrath of Zambia. Ba chilamo ba chinyamulilo!

  22. All Congolese, including those who came 250 years ago, bwekeleni kumyenu ku Katanga! Ba Kaboke imwe twacula naimwe pafula.

  23. congolese are bad people wether you like or not,i cross to congo every week, but i have never experienced the peace these kabokes do….let them go.who ever wants them let them follow. that man was a bread winner whose children are now fatherless….sometimes action speaks louder than words

  24. those zambians in congo let them leave that country if they get killed thats their own baby to nurse, congolese we are chassing them here…i hate these “supa loaf” head people

  25. If congolese are bad people why is it that our Zambians soccer players are playing for TP Mazembe which is a Congolese club? Have you seen any Congolese footballer of the national team playing for a Zambians Club? Our footballers are following money in Congo that why they play for Congolese and they have built houses in Congo. Zambia is a rich country according to many of you. If Zambia was a rich country why thousands of youths were complaining of not being picked in the Zambian Army? Even if you hate congolese to the extent of calling them animals that will not change the love that God has for them. Don’t be so proud of being Zambians bcoz no one chose to be born congolese or Zambian.Bitterness will kill you. We condemn the act but don’t revenge or insult innocent people of God.

    • Of course where do you think Sunzu comes from originally? Musole Sakulanda, Mathews Kamwashi, Kabamba Kalende , I can go on!!

    • MNG We need more people that think like you. Some people think being born in a better off place means you are superior. Such thinking is what starts racism, tribalism and xenophobia all of which have led to bloodshed. Zambians were hated in Botswana because they were seen as fleeing from a poor country to enjoy Botswana’s benefits. The same way Zambians are hating Congolese who come to Zambia.

  26. Ba MNG, if the Congolese are displaying 18th Century altitude they need to be told off. You have never been to Congo before that why your views are like that.

Much as they feel the warmth in Zambia we must feel the same when we go to Congo unlike the current situation where you can be arrested anytime just for being a foreigner.

About players, that is a different case those players of ours are working and the money they get that is what they are worth. Congo has players in Zambia only that they are not international. We should not revenge but these Congolese must reform that is what we are saying “big”

  27. @ N0. 17 Landa Nabo Ubebe,
Spot on! There was a day in Lusaka when a motorist hit into one of those ugly modified wheel barrows spilling whatever was being carried. This was one of my scary moments in town as the kaponyas went on rampage stoning not only the vehicle that bumped the wheelbarrow but any other vehicle in sight and stoning range. That was really primitive and with the scourge of street vending someone will lose a life soon.

  28. To all my war mongering bloggers here. I think most of you are very young no wonder the dangerous talk. Dont think Zambia has the capacity to start and finish a war. Its better to talk over such differences than to start inciting violent reprisals. Kasais are people just like Zambians and as neighbours we will always have differences; Imiti ipalamene taibula kusunkana so say the Bembas.

  29. Ba Lusaka Times please stop supporting hate speech. Terms such as “Kill Kasai” should not be tolerated on your website. You will end up at the Hague. Ask the Rwandan media who have been charged with aiding the Tutsi genocide

  30. The congolese do all sorts of criminal activities here in Zambia. You wonder how they would treat a zambian criminal if they can burn an innocent soul. Their country is rotten with lawlessness and impunity from Kasumbalesa to Kinshasa including its people ranging from Katumbi to Kabila. No system at all. . Just look at how their immigration and customs employees look. They look like a bunch of criminals with worn out uniforms and shoes. I doubt it very much if there is a system in place for employing these criminals working at their borders. Am sure one just leaves the street and uses muscle to find his way at the border as an employee. I very much doubt it if they even remit the cash they collect to their govermnment. Their faces just look criminal hell bent on stealing cash.

  31. Number 30, most clubs here do not want to register congolese because of their criminal nature. Infact, very few companies in Zambia would employee congolese. There was a congole football at Zanaco by the name of mathews papa kamwashi. He even played for our national team in a friendly against south africa. The chap appeared at the africa cup with the congolese national team under a different name. This is the nature of your country men. Even the “Doctors” who are here, most of them are questionable. By the way, no Zambian would build a house in Congo. That house can obviously be seized after completion.

  32. I have actually never come across a straight forward congole. Even the ones we had in school had Zambian passports. These people are just die hard criminals. One wonders why. I think a research needs to be done to establish why. Even one of our late former presidents (MHSRP) used to exhibit the same characteristics. They behave as though they were born from the same parents.

  33. obviously like your website but you have to check the spelling on several of your posts. Many of them are rife with spelling problems and I in finding it very troublesome to tell the truth however I??ll definitely come again again.
