The Zambia Police has called for cooperation from members of the public in curbing crime.

Speaking to ZANIS in an interview today, Police Spokesperson Elizabeth Kanjela said Police are encouraging communities to form Neighbourhood Watch Committees as it is an effective way to reducing crime levels in communities.

Ms. Kanjela said several communities already have neighbourhood watch committees in place while other neighbourhoods are still in the process of forming them.

She said such committees are vital as Police alone cannot curb crime effectively without cooperation from all citizens.

Ms. Kanjela said it was unfortunate that despite sensitisation, members of the public have continued to take the law into their own hands by killing suspected criminals.

She said the Zambia Police have embarked on several community sensitisation programmes to educate the public on the right ways of curbing crime.

Ms. Kanjela explained that Police have also resorted to using drama as a sensitisation medium.

She disclosed that the drama group will soon be going to the Copperbelt and Southern Provinces to discourage instant mob justice through drama.

Ms. Kanjela warned that any individual who will be spotted as having been part of the mob executing instant justice on a suspected criminal will be apprehended and face the law.

She was reacting to a case where Matero residents beat and burnt to death a suspected criminal over the weekend.

  1. I seriously doubt that. In Zambia the police are in the forefront of criminal activities not wonder people have resorted to mob justice.

  2. imwe naimwe ba kanjela , you are too weak , criminals are on the ramp and you expect people to be loosing their loved ones like flies to sit back and relax hell no, Do your work bakapokola mwalitemwisha quick cash from the road blocks thats why work is below standard. wake up

  3. parasites? grow where they are allowed to grow.there is no concept.no logic in the way how african countrys are dealing with immigration .we are brainwashed that we have to respect other cultures, religions …while the people we welcome in our country are savagely abusing our hospitality engaging in criminal activities, behaving like its their own country.the savage macho culture of many immigrants is simply outrageous

  4. Intesify on crime prevention you cops and stop chasing opposition parties for no reason.your priorities are misplaced.chase the mailoni brothers and guys killing innocent drivers.

  5. What are the new incentive for these committees? I know that the strategies currently bein used are more than 20 years old, introduced by then IG Ndhlovu through community policing. Do more reseach on the subject and disseminate information for proper use by the public. Canadian or UK community policing strategies are good examples
1.make use of the local security companies to provide security in a given area. Neighborhoods can appoint focal points as intermediaries between community and security comapnies, instead of households providing members for night patrols.
    2. Communities can be introduced to the use of street check points manned by contracted security companies or private guards. This promotes and creates employment in the security sector.

  6. its ok to kill a thief as a mob..even as an individual..coz these chaps are merciless..the pfolice should also work hard!

  7. BA KANJELA YOU MEAN IF YOU FIND THE MAILONI BROTHERS STABBING YOUR RELATIVE CAN YOU APPREHEND THEM WHEN YOU HAVE AN AK 47 RIFLE IN YOUR HANDS, OR YOU FIND PIPO STONING A CRIMINAL WHO EARLIER ON ATTACKED YOUR HOUSE AT NIGHT AND RAPED YOUR DAUGHTER CAN ARREST THEM FOR STONING THAT CRIMINAL I DON’T THINK SO. CRIMINALS STEAL, KILL, GET CAUGHT AND LATER GET RELEASED WITHIN 2MONTHS AND THEY COME FOR YOU AGAIN CAN SPARE THEM NO.
