When Democracy Fails: Gays are Zambians too!

By Reverend Kapya Kaoma

The arrest of human rights activist Paul Kasonkomona deserves condemnation by all Zambians of good will. If speaking in favor of gay rights is a crime, then our democracy is hollow. Free speech is among the many values that democracy upholds. Of course, the Acting President, Edgar Lungu, justified the arrest on the premise that “the bible is against” same-sex relations and that people with money are behind gay rights – hence “we better remain poor” than grant gays their rights. It is clear that Mr. Lungu does not know that he is not acting Bishop but President. With due respect, the Bible is not the constitution of Zambia.

That said, I want to remind Mr. Lungu that he will not remain poor – he has already accumulated a lot through undeserved allowances he receives, while the majority languish in perpetual poverty. “We,” the people, will remain poor whether we accept gay rights or not. However, Mr. Lungu’s utterances are also indicative of how gay rights are perceived – is all about money which is false.

In my article, “Does God Make Mistakes: Addressing the Issue of Gays,” I challenged our religious hypocrisy of using biblical verses when they suit our tastes. My point was that every human being is sacred. If anything, we are one big family, God’s family. My mother, my twin brother, my younger brothers and sisters may disagree with me on this issue. But that does not make us enemies. We are a family and that is more important to us than our perceived differences. If anything, my brothers and sisters would defend me should you attack me.

[pullquote]if there is someone who should be in jail, it is GBM and Winter Kabimba – and not the innocent Paul Kasonkomona[/pullquote].

As Zambians, we should consider ourselves as one family. We carry one passport and share one name, Mother Zambia. We are all endowed with inherent rights and Dignity by the Creator. I know you can cite versus from the Bible to make your case, but the bible tells me that we are all children of God. I am not saying that there is no room for disagreements, but those differences shouldn’t rob us of our dignity.
I read every comment that was posted on my article. You may call me whatever you want, but I will never diminish your dignity. Being an Ethicist, I won’t waste time reciting counter-verses. What I want to know, however, is how being gay affects your lifestyle, your family, your marriage and of course your faith as a Christian.

Some critics cited Sodom and Gomorrah. However, they missed the ethical point of that story. The moral actor in that story is not God but Abraham, who was a righteous man. Unlike most Christians today, Abraham pleaded with God to stop the destruction of “sinners” in those two cities. I know this story is highly complex for people without ethical training but the point is that despite being a holy man, Abraham did not condemn Sodom and Gomorrah to hell – rather he wrestled with God to try and save it. Likewise, your duty is to pray for us sinners and not to kill us! Some critics used the meme, “love the sinner and hate the sin.” Yet their responses were full of insults, hatred and demonization. It is one thing for you to attack me as the author of this article but it is another to insult innocent people. Please insult me to your liking but not sexual minorities.

[pullquote]Today, the PF government wants to employ the gay issue to distract from real issues facing our nation – corruption, lack of rule of law and shortages[/pullquote].

Let me take this opportunity to remind you that the culture of insults in detrimental to democracy. In case you don’t know, I have always defended human rights for all and I mean all – women, boys, girls, gays, straight, prostitutes, drunkards and even murderers. I believe that sin does not take away our humanity. This is why I oppose capital punishment and any form of brutality by those in power.

Coming back to gay rights, I kept a low profile on this issue – especially when it came to Zambia. But there are kairos moments when taking a stand is all we have to do. I am a defender of gay rights and I am not apologetic about it. I fully understand that defending human rights demands courage – that is why it is a struggle. We only get human rights by putting our lives on the line. When women began the battle for their rights, some were killed. When our liberation heroes began their struggles, some were killed and others stayed in prison for decades. But justice cannot be denied – the oppressed are always the victors. As for those who wondered whether I am gay, my answer is – what difference does it make? Oppression of our fellow human beings is not a Christian or African value.

As a Zambian, I am highly concerned with lack of civility in how we debate issues. We seem to strive on the culture of insults – from politicians to Christians. It is a shame that in the nation that prides itself in Christian values, we see nothing wrong with the comments that threaten to kill gays.

[pullquote]Free speech is among the many values that democracy upholds[/pullquote]

My sisters and brothers, Jesus calls us to love even our enemies. Demeaning the humanity of another person is not a virtue but a vice. You don’t need reminding that the first step to genocide is demeaning your opponents’ humanity. The Rwanda genocide is an excellent example. The Tutsi were dehumanized as cockroaches – thereby justifying their slaughter. The same thing happened to the Jews in Nazi German.
But, the dehumanization of gays seems to follow a pattern. When MMD was losing popularity, it attached the gay issue to PF. Today, the PF government wants to employ the gay issue to distract from real issues facing our nation – corruption, lack of rule of law and shortages. By the way, Mr. Lungu, if there is someone who should be in jail, it is GBM and Winter Kabimba – and not the innocent Paul Kasonkomona.
I know that most of us believe that the arrest of Paul is is justified because he is a gay rights activist. The truth is, the persecution of gay rights activists says much about our democracy. It started with the arrest of citizens for speaking against President Sata. Then Nevers Mumba, HH, Rupiya Banda and now Paul. Unless we put a stop to this madness, tomorrow we should not complain when they come for us.
Let me end by challenging the Acting President and Madam Kanjera to issue my warrant of arrest since I am a proud gay rights advocate. You don’t need to investigate, the evidence is all over – from The Lusaka times to the United Nations.

  1. Simple question boss – ARE YOU GAY?

If you are, then this article is clearly biased and a serious waste of time.

  2. the honourable President said he will run the country
    based on the 10 commandments.
so it really makes sense to arrest the gays and their supporters.
it was the sin of gays that made it possible for the destruction of sodoma and gomorra in the genesis story of the bible

actually gays must be sent to mukobeko maximum for hanging not until pronounced dead

  3. Stupid ***** , Is this Man a Reverand or antichrist?.
its time to throw ‘one stone’ to make these so-called Men of Gold’ to realise what God stand for. The next time, this same ***** will be advocating for oral sex , he is currently very happy with anal sex, thats why he can speak crap.

  4. YOU GO TO HELL WITH YOUR GAY RIGHTS, NOT HERE. WRONG PLACE.
I WILL NOT ASK BECAUSE ITS ALL CLEAR THAT, LIKE THE FOOLISH KASONKOSONKOSONKO, YOU ARE GAY TOO. ALL YOU GUYS SHOULD GO 6-FEET UNDER, IF NOT JAILED. ALLLLLLAH!!!!

  5. Good article that encourages critical thinking of human rights, democracy and the separation of Church and State. People with emotional reactions to the word ‘gay’ then simply substitute for the marginalized group of your choice and see if your emotional response holds.

  6. are u encouragn gay rights in our country or wat? Coz this article is seen to encourage the behaviour. We are nt condemnin gay pipo coz we dont knw hw they feel about pipo of the same sex.Wat we are sayn is that Zambia shud not entertain this gay thing. No offence to gay pipo

  7. Spot on Reverend Kapya ! Exactly like my line of thinking. It is just a pity that when one tries to speak out on behalf of this marginalized group, that person is also accused of being gay.Just the other day i tried to speak against the action which the police took after the arrest of Paul Kasonkomona because i believe the man has the right to do what he awnt to do with each body as long as it doesn`t interfere with other peoples lives.I was insulted from all angles.High time we stopped this discrimination. The same bible these people are quoting says that “love your neighbour”.It doesn`t specify whether that neighbour should be gay or not.I just don`t understand why somebody should worry about what another person does in private.

  8. Being a Rev seems to have failed you may God help you the Democracy thing should not conflict with God’s will before why should democracy be lifted above God’s will? God forbid.

  9. Ba Lusaka Times don’t mislead the readers. Instead of putting the portrait of the ***** author of this rotten article you decided to put that one of His Excellence the Acting President. Why are you hiding the face of this ***** who is masquerading as a reverend? Iam even wondering if this stupid ***** who is calling himself Kapya Kaoma really exist. I suspect these homosexual articles are being generated by Lusaka times in the name of reverend kapya.

  10. Ba Reverend , don’t try to hide what is wrong in the name of human rights. Evil people don’t understand what is right, but those who follow the Lord understand completely. Are you truly a reverend?

  11. Be the one to throw the first stone! We have all fallen short of the glory of God…Christians should protect ALL people-IF YOU KNOW YOUR BIBLE AND FAITH you should understand that THE CHRIST himself dinned with the worst of sinners of the day…In my eyes being gay is sinful because i am a Christian but understanding that i too sin, i have no legal right to cast stones at my fellow sinners in Zambia-basically their sin has nothing to do with me! We have no justification in denying these sinners rights in Zambia…we are sleeping with school girls, outside our marriages, robbing people in their sleep, insulting adults including the govt. of the day, e.t.c we all the same and all live in Zambia…Now cast a stone at me if you have no sin or have not taken up some sinful ‘western…

  12. WAT OF TYPE A REVEREND IS THIS MAN ? YOU WANT TO USE THE NAME OF GOD TO MAKE MONEY.SHAME ON YOU.HAVE YOU EVER SLEPT WITH BOTH A MAN OR WOMAN.THESE NO HUMAN RIGHTS ON UN NATURAL HABITS LYK GAY.REVERAND YOU TRYING TO TELL US DAT GOD DIDN’T NO WAT HE WAS DOING WEN HE CREATED A MAN AND WOMAN.IF YOU GOT YOU RIGHTS HOW AR YOU GOING TO REPRODUCE

  13. Very sill allowing a snake in your house kill it withiot any negotiations just arrest this man also ,Gays are just like poison on your pot if you leave it you are gone arrest them Zambia

  14. Every country has rules(In the west,Polygamy is a crime just as being gay is a crime in Zambia). So reverend if you want to marry a man go to South Africa. If a dog knows were to put its penis,What more human beings.Rev Kaoma, what you are advocating is a waste of time.

  15. Why do we want to stone gays when most of us men are caught up in adultery and fornication?no sin is bigger than the other. Good article.

  16. Rev Kaoma with due disrespect, your arguments are so unbelievably hollow.

How did you you become a leader of God’s children with such shallow analysis of life?

    I pit your followers.

I am sorry you have not done your homework on law, viz aviz gays

  17. I agree with the Reverand on this one. The bible is very clear that gayism is wrong. My question is, does the bible instruct us what to do with gays or the people we suspect to be gays? I think the answer to this question is NO. God says that he will punish these people himself, not us to do it since they offend Him.
We need to be very careful as Zambians how this matter should be handled. We can also learn from what others are doing about it.

Having lived in foreign lands myself, I think we Zambians are too excited about this matter and GRZ is better off using its resources on other things like employment, food shotages and development of democracy. Let our churches and civil organizations sort out the issue of gays and lesbians.

As aforementioned, the issue is being abused by…

  18. Even rapists are Zambians! This pervert masquerading as a man of God should understand what the word procreation means in the definition of marriage. Ethical training? What a load of crap, this guy is a queer who has no moral standing. Kaoma, stop prostituting your butt to those white guys for a few dollars and get Jesus in your life. As Zambians we should defend our culture by all means, this cry of human rights is getting out hand, just because in a certain country they practice cannibalism, it does not means it is okay to adopt it in my beloved country. We should not end up like South Africa, where liberal causes have gotten out hand, sons marrying their mothers is way to perverse for our culture. We should ban any promotion of homosexuality like Russia.

  19. I dont support Homosexuality but I think this article is good. The question we should ask is : Is homosexuality a sin or a crime? Sin yes it is and gays need to repent. But is it not the same as fornication and adultery? Why then are the two not crimes? Why not treat Gayism as adultery instead of criminalizing it? I surely believe some people are being marginalised here and i know the end losers are homophobic humans. If it disturbs the peace of us all then let us make it criminal but if it is a private affair then let us not hunt human beings like animals. Let us not be hypocrits by pretending that there are no homos in zambia. we know them. We see them but are not bothered because they don’t harm anyone. I think we need to take this debate to a hire level than this mediocrity.

  20. This Rev is some one who needs help direct from God. Its not suprising,
becoz in last days such people are there. read revelation 12 vers 9 – 12.
Satan is doing his best to try and divide God’s children. Pliz all christian lets pray
for such missguided human beings. Gays belong to Devil (Satan)

  21. @ MK I think you are completely missing the point. Gays are not synonymous to rapists. It is consential sex between adults of the same sex. If you really have Christ in your life then I would certainly declare that every Jim and Jack on the street has Christ in their lives. How do you explain so much vile and hate in your language if you are a true Christian? And why have you decided to mix issues in your debate? Where does Homosexuality and cannibalism meet? NO where! Cannibalism entails one being killed and eaten while the other one is two people consenting. I would have thought that you would compare Homosexuality to Polygamy because while it is not acceptable in Christianity (subject to debate), It is not a crime. Culture accepts it but Christianity does not.

  22. i would easily get a PhD in nuclear physics than understand the minds of people who are against gay people! PEOPLE who are gay do not rob those that are straight of their sexual organs, to use them in homosexuality; they have their own things; so what in hell is the fuss all about? a person stealing your possessions deprives you of your hard earned possession! A gay person doesn’t. So how on earth does homosexuality affect any body else who is not gay? they are not plundering, they are not polluting the earth, neither are they causing global warming nor poverty! LIVE AND LET LIVE. How hard is that?

  23. Yes even Rapists and Murderers and thieves have human rights but they re enjoying their rights in PRISON. So gay people should know where they will enjoy their rights.
Ive walked the streets of Zambia and to date i have not seen a mentally challenged person with gay traits. Its just unnatural and un acceptable. NO WE Refuse this lifestyle in Zambia,First you tried Malawi now you re here. NO!!!!

  24. And has anyone noticed how Christians are insisting on using old testament verses to condemn homosexuality and not Jesus’ gospel of love? Because the teaching of Jesus are not for simple minded self righteous and egoistical beings who think they are holier than anybody else. It takes humility and courage to live according to Jesus’s teaching, that is why they killed him. They had no courage to face the veracity of his message. That courage is still lacking to this day. It takes courage to love a person who is different from you. Shame on you self righteous holier than thou haters!

  25. Thats why God destroyed Sodom and Gomorah because sin is sin!!!!! No Gays in Zambia!!! lets love our women……

  26. You guys who are saying gay people need to be recognized in our society and given rights and freedoms, then we might aswell let satanists begin to preach publicly and build temples, cause they have the freedom of worship too. Lets hear what my fellow christians will have to say about that.

  27. @ big five, ulichipuba asana. What does this have to do with saving women. Leave the gay people alone and live ur life. I am a gay activist, so tell that excuse of an acting president to arrest me.

  28. To practice homosexual is sin and abomination before the sight of God .If one is a homosexual and repents of the vice who are we not to forgive. Fruits of repentance should be evident and not to be arrogant to defend your evil wrong against GOD word and sovereinity of Zambian constitution. The bible is clear about Jesus christ dealing with sinners after being forgiven. HE said you are forgiven and SIN NO MORE. A REPENTANT MIND will seek to avoid wrong and will not seek recognition for doing wrong. If you are a homosexual /lesbian ,please seek God forgiveness and work out your salvation with fear and trembling to put things right with GOD and lastly with man kind . Homosexual is unnatural and it cannot be a human right as it GRAVELY contravens the norms of NATURAL LAW

  29. I agree with the REV last comment. Let us arrest him before he pollutes the minds of his church members.God does not allow us to judge but this one should be an exception, this man is evil and im sure he is after material gain. We are all sinners but this one achilamo, let us pray for him, not the other way round, because he was suppose to praying for us.

  30. “Oppression of the minority by the majority is not anymore justifiable than oppression of the majority by the minority,” – famous British philosopher. Rev. Kapya – you are right on. Imagine if gays – being clearly minorities here – managed to mobilise enough resources to make sure the rest of us cannot practice our beloved straight sex, how nice would that be? As some people have observed above, if somebody decides to climb a lemon tree and suck unripe lemons the whole day – how does that affect me? Same thing – if two males or females decide to bang each other, how does that affect me? Live and let live! Kwasila.

  31. I hv a simple question for these gay activists & so called Reverends, whtever thy call themselves.
My question is in the name of your ill misinterpreted human rights is it still human rights you sleeping or I call it having sex with your own mother or father & it say so long it doesn’t pollute de air. And defend it in the name of so long its a private mata.
By accident you find your own mother naked. Wud u say I today hv found my own mum attractive so let me sleep with my mother. Guys be serious with what you doing.
My last question. Wud u defend having sexual intercourse with your very own sister & to the worst even say we both find attracted to each other & we want to marry for life ? Plz get back on questions hv raised. You all deserve hanging & the sooner the better for our society

  32. Reverend, with all due respect to your arguments, don’t you think there must be something wrong if you have to use all means to defend something that is ‘right’. The English language has a nice way of describing certain things. The word disgusting comes to mind. This subject falls into the category of this word. You can launder the subject in any way you like, still the word comes. Why do you think the word straight has come into the limelight when describing heterosexual couples. Something not straight is either bent, crooked, unsightly, disgusting or whatever expletive one might like. Insulting you is totally wrong, but one understands how other people feel strongly about this issue.

  33. Calm down friends. Let the good/fake reverend speak. If you have a better opinion put out your own article. LT publishes everyone.

  34. Geez, I saw that arrested gay guy ‘s foto on Mwebantu, the dude looks sick i pity him i doubt if he’s at all conscious uluse, later in the night on BBC African news was an interview with one Zambian Lesbo, iye what a sorry sight, if i describe her now you all will dislike me, so comments reserved, as for this author of the article my question to you is…, what do you suggest should be done to eliminate this vile abormination from our masses? I suggest chimbokaila, Chainama or Mukobeko. Best would be castrate the men as for the Lesbos, Female circumcision, problem solved!

  35. We should send some Polygamy activists to the West.
We want the West to accept our African culture.
Obama must marry a second wife, his wife has just
given him girls so he has to marry another woman
who is going to give him boys. Cameron must marry
a second wife and possibly a third and fourth. Lets see what reasons they are going to give us
against this basic human right. We have a lot of
brothers there willing to get more than one white
woman for wives but their law cant allow.

  36. Im happy to live in a free country.
God created me as Gay. What can I do….
Anyway, wars are NOT an invention of Gay’s
    They just love each other…

  37. Malachi 2:7-9 (Read this Rev Kaoma)

For the priest’s lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth: for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts. 8 But ye are departed out of the way; ye have caused many to stumble at the law; ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the LORD of hosts. 9 Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as ye have not kept my ways, but have been partial in the law.

  38. NOT AGAIN THIS FOOL REV I THINK HIS BEEN PAID A LOT SOON HE WILL BE ZEEE ICIPUBA NA MA RIGHTS YA BUPUBA FOOLISH kaoma EVIL ONE

  39. Kekekekekekekekekeke

Mwandi, peepo are commenting as if they are fresh from the ka village to the big city!

an so much for ‘Stand and sing of Zambia proud and FREE’…

  40. Mmmmm and for those who like to hide behind the bible I would like to purchase some Zimbabwean farmers

    Leviticus 25:44-46 ESV

As for your male and female slaves whom you may have: you may buy male and female slaves from among the nations that are around you. You may also buy from among the strangers who sojourn with you and their clans that are with you, who have been born in your land, and they may be your property. You may bequeath them to your sons after you to inherit as a possession forever. You may make slaves of them, but over your brothers the people of Israel you shall not rule, one over another ruthlessly.

  41. Roman 1:18
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness.
    ..verse 26
For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
This is what saint paul who met Christ says

  42. @Alfred… You can be ‘God’ and get rid of all your gays and If you want I will send over the Zimbabwean slaves (which the bible states I am allowed) to preform the burial…. Free of charge kekekekeke

    • @ Chilufya this is a serious issue thats needs level headedness and wisdom. i am not God neither do i intend to judge or kill the gays. My simple advocacy is correction; Love corrects errors and the best place to seek knowledge correction is from the word of God.

  43. Leave gay people alone. It is not your hole they insert in.If the guy inserts where sewage comes from then that is his or her business.Let them continue inserting where they think is right and you continue where you think is right.Your have you own life to live ,so mind your own business.

  44. Agreed @Lungowe
My point is peepo are just taking pieces of the bible for their benefit… You could use the bible to justify slavery if you want! Everyone will be judged… The only true judge is god!

  45. Roman 1:29
Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without NATURAL AFFECTION, implacable, unmerciful: 32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

  46. What will happen if the gay people are granted their so called gay rights? As far as many people maybe concerned, being gay is not a problem amongst many people and surely if the rights are given, there is totally nothing that is going to change concerning the poverty and the economy in the country. The truth of the matter is that we have gay people amongst us with or without the rights. So allowing them to express their views should not amount criminality. As much as it is a sin, is it the only sin being committed? There are many other sins that people are committing, are we going to be judges and condemn them? The bars and night clubs are a big source of sin such as adultery and fornication, should close them all? Give Caesar what belongs to Caesar period, let them sin why bother!

    • @ The Observer this is the point. Its a fact that all sins are happening in our society; adultery, witchcraft, satanism, sodomy, drunkenness etc, but why should this error, or more precisely, abomination standout, be treated differently with special rights? Shouldn’t we also start allowing satanist freedom/right of worship; freedom for murderers, thieves, child defilers…..

  47. It is just amazing how the Old Testament is used selectively when the time suits it. Most other times – because of the violent references therein – it is excused as having been “fulfilled by the New Testament”. There is so much hypocrisy it is not even funny. What is it if someone is what they choose to be? Let every adult of consenting age choose what he or she wants to do or be providing they are aware of the burden their choices make. After all, that is exactly how we all go through life – it is about choices and woe to him who hinders another that chooses to do what he will!

  48. Agreed
My point is peepo are just taking pieces of the bible for their benefit… You could use the bible to justify slavery if you want! Everyone will be judged… The only true judge is god!

  49. @Alfred! We need to understand these issues carefully, some of the crimes you have mentioned are harmful and aimed at other people. Gays are not trying to harm me or you or any child per se. Why would a child defiler ask for any rights to do harm to children anyway? Maybe you are missing the point. I doubt if the gay people want the right to go out there and starting mounting every Jim and Jack. They want rights to be able to conjugate like husband and wife. So how do you compare this to witch craft, freedom to murder etc? I’m sure there are many people thinking in your way no wonder this issue escalating!

  50. Pls don’t copy everything from the west.Gay or whatever its called should never be tolerated. This is a christian nation. This western recent madness of homosexuallity should never even debated in Zed.Its an abomination.Shame on Kasonkomona.Zambians lets stand up against this evil. Why break the law even its illegal in Zambia.

  51. Ba Observer is not Homosexuality outlawed in Zambia? How then can we allow gay rights when its against our laws? Where on earth is one evil better than the other? how on earth can you say homosexuality is not harmful when God says its abominable? it may not affect you directly like one who attacks to kill you, but it may affect your children or next generation and our values and principles. will you have been born if your father was gay? please consider these points also

  52. Mary what law has Paul broken? The fact that Zambia was declared a Christian nation does not make the citizens Christians. In a Christian nation where there is a bar at every corner of the streets, oh is that also copied from the West? Stop pretending and come back to reality. Leave the sinner to sin, when they come across salvation, they will change, let us leave them and simply treat them as lost people. If you discover your neighbor is gay, how is that going to affect and disturb your Christianity?

  53. Alfred people have a free will to decide what they want to be and who they want to spend their life with. Let us be glad that your parents and my parents were not gay because they had a choice not to be. Are surely going to kill people who gay. Every person has their own values and I doubt if sexual orientation are personal and private issues that should not affect anybody. For your own information, these people are amongst us and we mingle with them everyday. SO tell me something how do you treat those people you know they are gay anyway?

    • @The Observer i Thought you will answer the issues i raised in my previous comment. But to answer you, i met one person that told me he was gay and i felt sorry for him just as i do other people, alcohol addicts, fornicators and murderers. Thats why i really need them to acknowledge their error and seek help. God forgives if people repent and extenuate

  54. We have our way of life, our culture, our laws.

This reverend must be told that with God there is no democracy.

It either you are with Him or with the devil. There is no middle ground

You are a really confused pastor who cant draw a line between what is just and evil

  55. @ The Observer all we are saying is that the Western guys always want to bring their life styles to the whole world. Africa is one place where in the name of democracy and global village foolish things such as guy is being sponsored by NGOs from the countries and yes they find Zambians like this Kaoma pastor and let him talk this world foolishness. Mind you when you were growing up you raised in a normal and natural atmosphere what you know about guy you knew after growing up. Now our children will not have that innocence any more because you people are encouraging it.

  56. ALL PEOPLE HAVE RIGHTS, YES BUT THERE ARE LIMITS AS WELL. YOU CAN ONLY BE ACCUSED OF THEFT IF YOU HAVE STOLEN , HAVE BEEN CAUGHT AND THERE IS A COMPLAINANT. GAYS HAVE A RIGHT TO BE GAY BUT COMING OUT IN THE OPEN AND DEMANDING TO BE RECOGNISED AND ALLOWED TO PRACTICE IN A COUNTRY WHERE THE ACT IS ILLEGAL IS A VIOLATION OF OTHER PEOPLE’S RIGHTS. GAY PEOPLE ARE RECRUITING STRAIGHT PEOPLE TO GAYISM AND THAT IS WRONG. ITS STRANGE TO NOTE THAT MR KAPYA HAS SHIFTED HIS POSITION AND CONCEDED THAT HOMOSEXUALITY IS A SIN. CHRISTIANS DO NOT HATE GAYS BUT LOVE THEM SINCERELY AND ARE PRAYING FOR THEM TO CHANGE THEIR WAYS. THIS IS WHY PASTORS ARE ALWAYS VISITING PRISONS TO PRAY FOR CRIMINALS WITH THE HOPE THAT THEY’LL CHANGE THEIR WAYS WHEN THEY ARE RELEASED. bELIEVE OR NOT SOME SOME PEOPLE ARE BORN…

  57. SOME PEOPLE ARE BORN THIEVES AND MURDERERS BUT THEY CANNOT DEMAND THEIR RIGHT TO GO ROUND STEALING AND KILLING PEOPLE BECAUSE THEY WERE BORN THAT WAY, NO. EVERYONE WHO COMMITS AN OFFENCE AND IS CAUGHT WILL BE PROSECUTED, SO YOUR REFERENCE TO OTHER PEOPLE WHO HAVE STOLEN OR SINNED IS IMMATERIAL HERE. YOU ASK THAT HOW DO WE GET AFFECTED BY PEOPLE BEING GAY? DO YOU HAVE TO BE HIV POSITIVE YOURSELF TO BE AFFECTED BY HIV? THE POINT ABOUT POLYGAMY BEING ILLEGAL IN THE WEST IS VERY GOOD. YOU GET ARRESTED FOR MARRYING MORE THAN ONE WIFE BUT YOU WANT TO IMPORT SUCH A SERIOUSLY WRONG PRACTICE TO ZAMBIA. NO, NO, NO, NO, PLEASE, TAPAPATA. YESANI KWINANGO A KAPYA! NOT PA ZED.

  58. The issue is not for church(God). Don’t bring is your issues. The issue about you humans perceive to be right and wrong thus which is accepted in our constitution. Again carefully people need yo dig deeper and know who is saying what eg is person married, has children, sex, etc family values. Women for change who started it?
I am sorry, for future of our country. So I advocate to be colonised that will rights, sale drugs, drink and drive, pay no tax, kill any I hate, sleep with anyone, anywhere, any age because there is reason doing that. Our Zambian don’t allow that? So be it. The constitution allows debates Anne finally majority wins. Jesus had 11 people and was accused and crucified. MPs have job to do.
Sorry bane………the rate we are moving sorry

  59. Thank you, Reverend, for this well reasoned article. I hope it will inspire Zambians to think critically and to exercise compassion.

As others have said above, I believe the reason many Zambians are becoming overexcited and outraged over this issue is because they do not understand homosexuality.

Let me break it down for you, dear brothers and sisters:

    – A gay person is one who is attracted to the same gender

    – No one is harmed when two consenting people of the same gender love each other.

    – Gay people fall in love and have healthy relationships, just like us heterosexual people.

    – Recognizing gay rights would ensure that no one is persecuted for loving a member of the same gender.

There is nothing to fear. Gay people are human beings just like…

  60. IT IS SIN IN THE BIBLE ,IT IS SIN TO US CHRISTIANS BUT WE ARE CALLED EVEN TO LOVE A SINNER .HOWEVER ,I CANNOT ENCOURAGE THEM TO IT JUST AS I CANNOT DO SO TO A DRUNKERED OR PROSTITUTE.I’LL LOVE A PROSTITUTE& PRAY 4 HER BUT I WIL NOT HATE HER.

  61. funso, doesnt the bible say as christians we need to respect the law of the land? And as far as i am concerned the law in Zambia says no homos, and it is in line with Gods standards. So when we stand before God, who will God support, the guy supporting gays and in turned going against both the law of the land and God himself, or the guy fighting to uphold the law of the land and that of God too? And also ba busa, if you are saying you are a christian then you clearly know homos commit sin, just like murderers thieves etc, so are you saying we should also allow bene GBM and Kabimba to steal because that might be within their human rights even though we dont agree with those rights? And what really are gay rights? the right to corrupt our childrens morals with their perversions? Explain sir.

  62. It’s so sad that some people can actually embrace this, and call up on the govnt to consider this. Our parents did not even know that this issue existed, but now people are talking of rights, no wonder in other countries a thief who tries to steal from your house has rights not to be harmed b the owner. Kanshi, nichiani, chinshi icine, cine ichishupile mu chalo? It’s quite funny because some men have been straight before and turn to being gay, and so are ladies. Ifyabupuba. It’s common knowledge, exit. Is not entry.

  63. What’s all this yapping????

Simple: Zambian Law prohibits Homosexuality – Thus if caught / inciting the parctice, straight-way one gets arrested!! No hanky panky about it!!!!

Yes there is freedom of speech, BUT first check what you propounding isn’t against the law!!! Just like you can’t shout “Bomb, Bomb!!” on an aircraft – bale kulonga!! No one will clamour it’s against free speech!!!

So kapya & friends just continue what you enjoy for now, “behind” closed doors – sorry the pun “behind!!” (a.k.a. “yaku mbuyo!!”)

Kapya, just remember: NO ONE AS YET, HAS DENIED YOU ANY ZAMBIAN RIGHTS THAT EACH & EVERY ZAMBIAN ENJOYS TODAY – coz you are probably still doing it “behind” closed doors! The only little thing I accept, IS THAT YOU CAN’T STAND ON TOP OF A HILL & Sing…

  64. Kapya, AREN’T YOU GRATEFUL TO YOUR PARENTS THAT THEY WERE NOT GAY????
Becoz if the were, today you wouldn’t be breathing the air you breathe, as well as TRYING TO CONVINCE US YOUR SEXUAL ORIENTATION IS THE WAY TO GO!

  65. Kapya, AREN’T YOU GRATEFUL TO YOUR PARENTS THAT THEY WERE NOT G.A.Y????
Becoz if the were, today you wouldn’t be breathing the air you breathe, as well as TRYING TO CONVINCE US YOUR S.E.XUAL ORIENTATION IS THE WAY TO GO!

  66. Why have these organizations tried Muslim countries, they know that such practices can’t be tolerated. Zambians stand firm in preserving the christian heritage and good traditions.

  67. All I see in your article is deceit and hyprocricy, which are the two markers of the evil one.The bible clearly states in Luke 6: 45 and I quote, “The good person out of the good treasure of the heart produces good, and the evil person out of evil treasure produces evil; for it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks.” In law, there is a charge against aiding a criminal. SIN IS SIN and no matter what arguments you put across, SIN is SIN and that is period. If you really are a man of GOD, your message should be plain and simple, such as; ” I ask you my brethren to pray for our brothers and sisters who are living in bondage of this sin.” To espouse for their rights as those this vice is better than any other sins is repugnant to say the least.

  68. zambians can really b damn and daft,, the country has no right watsoever to pass judgemnt on bhalf of GOD.3quaters if not all here are sinners, major sinners,,yu shudnt even mention sin bcoz the majority here are hypocrites,,yu are busy commitin infidelity, cheating, aborting, oppressin the less privelgd, defiling children, jst becoz yu hidin in the dark,yu think yu not being watchd and yu hav the right to condem or judge on bhalf of God,,yu ar the ones who shall b punished,, leave judging to GOD and God alone,, stupidity,,

  69. Bwana Kaoma, this gayism and lesbiansm are there to Exterminate the Human race, which are satan’s intentions. In a nut shell, you are a satan’s argent in sheep’s skin. This article must not even have been published.

  70. Kapya Kaoma you are a lost cantankerous nicompoop! You should not refer to the bible or sodom and gomola because the bible does not support gays.In Sodom and Gomola people were drinking and doing other sins but nor being gay.You should not even claim t be part of the Zambian family because you cannot have a family where are men marry men and women marry women. The bible clearly says that God gave us a responiblity to procreate and fill up the earth.Do you think if your father married a man you would have ben born? You are wasting your time by suporting gays.Nobody will support you on this one no matter how much you write about it and twist facts.Animals think better than you because they are able to tell between male and female.Ulichipuba!!

  71. i really don’t support gay people but this noise doesn’t make sense to me at all Gay if we say gayisim is a sin then how about people that commit fornication and adultery ant they sinning because if we arrest gays because they are sinning then lets arrest the fornicators and adulterers because its a sin and we are running the country on 10 Commandments… please Mr President No Sin is Greater than the other Fornication, Adultery or gayisim

  72. Refusal of something is not been damn, daft, judgmental or hypocritical. Zambians refuse murder, thievery, molestation, foul language etc, and have accordingly passed laws against such vices. Zambians refuse gayism, have accordingly passed a law against the vice. As a compromise, don’t ask don’t tell!

  73. Firstly, all minority churches in Zambia are a fraud, you thrive on donations from citizens and tax free legislation from the government.
I can guarantee you that on that day when we gather at the river, the beautiful the beautiful river, gather with the saints at the river that flows by the throne of God, gays will not be present!

  74. As long as the law is protecting me and my plus the future generations Im for it.
The idiocy of the Gay lifestyle is like the adverts of size zero models splashed on every tv channel. Most teen girls believe that they need to be size zero to be beautiful. In the same way gays lead youths into believing its ok to do it even when they are just having issues with hormones as adolesents and not understanding the changes taking place in their bodies. I do not wish upon any Zambian family to have to deal with this creepy behaviour, because if we allow it it will creep into our homes.
Advice to parents tell your children what it means to be a man or woman, allow your children to associate with the opposite sex at an early age. I.e. Supervised dating like movies and meeting at the mall,

  75. Reverend Kapya Kaoma SATAN, NOT A DEMON OR DEMONS BUT LUCIFER, THE DEVIL HIMSELF HAS DESIRED TO HAVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!

  76. Fist good article!
It is a pity that´s will not make people introspect about what it says…reading THE MOST of the above comment I can see why…something very wrong it is happening to zambians…please DO NOT CALL YOURSELVES CHRISTIANS! your hearts are as DARK as coal…may your God have mercy on you.

  77. You do not determine what I want to be and who I will spend my life with,we are not all christian unless you start to arrest non christians and kill dem, zambia will have to recognise gay rights coz we’ll still remain zambians and we are here to stay.

  78. Christians,

Why are we behaving like this? If being gay is against God, don’t our gay brothers and sisters deserve our compassion and support. What would Jesus do? He most certainly would NOT advocate throwing them in prison or stoning them to death.

It is lies that people become gay from copying what they see on TV.

I have never met a gay person that made the choice to be gay. All of these individuals have struggled with their homosexuality. Why would they choose to be gay when there is so much at risk?

    Think!

    Use your heart!

  79. Reverend, nobody doubts that some people are gay or that they are not God’s children. Th issue here is that the acceptance of gay people or their rejection is a matter of societal values: does the society we r in accept the aspect of being gay or not? If it dos, it is ok. If it doesnt then thats democracy.

Essentially, if a person wants to be let go (no imprisonment) because he felt like killing his neighbour or forcing sex (rape) on his workmate’s daughter, then they surely can AS LONG AS SOCIETY SEES IT FIT. That bit in capital letters is the Law of the land and if it says its wrong, then you lock up anyone who promotes it. If it says it is right, the u let them go scot free.

It is this basic, abeit in so many words.

  80. Pipo are using democracy for their filthy way of life, but woooo guys, if u say that, let’s cut the thieves on the loose also coz ull find that they are just marginalised to borrow this gay guy’s word, they don’t choose to, its a choice they don’t have, ask them all u find they have a reason for stealing, its not normal to practice gayisim. U want to sound so intelligent by misusing words that u do not really understand, we have norms, if talking about that is a norm in ur home, why should u bring it on air for our children to hear it, its disgusting, let’s not embrace abnormal things, are we out of this to practice? Come one man, u are normal, u just want to use the word gay for the justification of ur weak sick mind of approaching ur opposite sex, shame on ya man. I wouldn’t be…

  81. Well written message. We all want to use the Bible to justify our actions, and we selectively pick the verse ( or part thereof ) that suits that action. We need to realise that speaking about something and actually doing it are two different things.

Keep advocating for human rights for all.

    Regards

  82. Buggies,

Being gay and being a thief/murderer is not the same thing. A gay person is one who loves another of the same gender. No one is harmed when members of the same gender choose to be together.

If you find homosexuality disgusting, that’s your personal opinion and you are entitled to it. But don’t let your personal opinion get in the way of consenting adults trying to live in peace.

I find junk food disgusting but I don’t stop others from eating it. I have my opinion and I mind my own business. To each his own. Live let live.

The important thing is that no one is being harmed.

I repeat: being gay does not harm anyone.

Why are we discouraging consenting adults from loving each other?

  83. Christianity: brought to Africa by Western countries to control the ‘natives’… now we are using it to try and control others who are doing no harm. All countries and races have homosexuality. It is only in recent years that SCIENCE has taught us that gay people are completely healthy and a normal variation of human nature. So the tolerance is coming from the Western countries because they have the money to do the scientific research. We in Africa are still ignorant about homosexuality and so we fear it. The argument that homosexuality is from the West is rubbish, it has always been here in Africa just like every other place where humans have existed.

  84. The Reverend is exactly right that the Bible is not a constitution of Zambia, 100 per cent, but he has missed his argument on one fundamental point.

That gay guy has been arrested not on the basis of what the Bible says but on the basis of the current existing Zambian Constitution which prohibits Gaysm.

It is the rule of law here. Do not just be emotional about a very clear issue here. Those who are referring to the bible, they are just mentioning an added moral impetus on the loathness of gaysm for those who believe in the Bible ( like you if you are a true Reverend) but the basis for his arrest is the Zambian constitution and not the Bible.

  85. this artical is too damn rubbish, fear God and give him glory for did not make a man to man but he created Adam and Eve(man and woman) now why being an advocate of such deceiful sinful arts…May God identify you coz u ar not a man of God but you know were u belong….fire fire fire seek the blood of Jesus for your forgiveness….

  86. The Reverend is exactly right that the Bible is not a constitution of Zambia, 100 per cent, but he has missed his argument on one fundamental point.

That gay guy has been arrested not on the basis of what the Bible says but on the basis of the current existing Zambian Constitution which prohibits being gay

It is the rule of law here. Do not just be emotional about a very clear issue here. Those who are referring to the bible, they are just mentioning an added moral impetus on the loathness of being gays for those who believe in the Bible ( like you if you are a true Reverend) but the basis of his arrest is the Zambian constitution and not the Bible.

  87. Personally I think Zambians living in the diaspora are being unfair to the Zambians back home. Zambians living in the US, UK, Canada, Holland etc have been exposed to Gay people and some of us may not condone the act but we have come to understand them, but for our fellow Zambians back home this whole thing is alien to you and I truly get it because naine the first time I learned about gays it made me sick to my stomach but with time I have come to understand them. So in terms of rights for Gays in Zambia, its a non starter the people are not ready for it.

  88. Motswana, your argument makes some sense. However, you need to remove sweeping statements. Gays in the West have not been accepted. Fights are still going on so please do not mislead the people.
In Britain there is very strong opposition even now. The parliament has recently granted it a status of civil union and they have refused to call it marriage. The Church of England has clearly stated, no gay weddings will be conducted in their church. Even in US it is still a hot issue.
Again I find your argument hollow that gays have always been around since human existence and that basis, it must be accepted. How can this be a point to raise, Motswana. Murder stealing, raping have been around but shall we accept them as normal on that basis?. Please mention other points not these.

  89. Vibestar gay marriage is the issue that is being debated in the West. But the simple reality of being a gay person is not against the law in the West. Now back to Zambia; The argument those speaking against the arrest are stating is that it is against logic, freedom yes and even the beloved BIBLE to ARREST someone for BEING gay. What you do in you bedroom is not for legislators to decide. And thus the law needs to be changed. You are not required to support gay rights or change your own religious beliefs in order to allow your fellow citizens the same rights you have to be initimate with whomever you want. Please do not confuse RELIGION with a LEGISLATION. Isn’t there something in the Bible about the laws of man vs. the laws of God? How do gay people personally harm you??

  90. please these guys you call gays and lesbians are not productive.if they were companies i would liquidate them sooner than i owned them.a man and a women were made by God to complement each other and if their parents were lesbians and gays these *****s would have not been here to talk about gay rights violation.

  91. False reverend so everything from Europe is clean. Why can’t u go to Europe and advocate for polygamy marriages, as you know it is a crime in most European countries? Why advocate gay rights in africa(Zambia). Go to Europe tell them that a man has a right to marry many wives as long as women also agree and see the reaction there. Are you going to call them primitive. Gay issue is far different from those issues of Nevers, HH, or Rupiah. MMD, UPND, PF or whatever party Gay is a crime today in Zambia says the LAW.until law changed(but it will never).

  92. Great article, and good reasoning – keep up the spirit. I however have some suggestions to make: (i) we should perhaps stick to rights for all humans (ie. fight and uphold rights for all citizens of Zambia) regardless of creed, gender, sexual orientation etc… So why should it be gay rights? (ii) Let us take baby steps and not be quick to judge and throw those pebbles; (iii) You the experts teach us lot about these things, never give up; (iv) For everybody, why not chill a little, apply some compassion and above all focus on making Zambia (our lovely country) a pleasant place that embraces all. One Zambia, One Nation!

  93. You are right. That is why I spoke about fighting for human rights for all people. However, the problem is that gays are already defined as such.

  94. Kay, how can you say the arrest beats logic when the constitution does not allow it? You need to first repeal the law and when this is done whoever is arrested it will then be against logic, not now. The law prohibits it.

Further gays have not been accepted in the West, I insists. Gays in the West are still fighting for the law to recognize them as couples and they should enjoy the same status before the law as the married males and females. They are still fighting for this but they have not been accepted on this note. If they west have truly embraced gays as being normal why are they not treating it as any other marriage as we know it?

  95. Whether people accepts it or not or the law allows it, will never be treated as normal. You have studied elementary science. Look at your body organs, they are actually there to fit a certain purpose in relation to what the female has. Don’t mislead us. If the law accepts gays fine but remember people can accept anything. man is in general a warped entity; it is a question of getting used but that does not make it normal from biology point of view. You can be whatever you want in your private life but do not force other people to accept what they view not to be normal.
He went to Muvi TV to lobby for acceptance from the public when the law is against it.

Put a clause in the constitution that gays should do this, it will be fine but biology will still not accept it.

  96. When a person dies in a accident, they are people who advocate eating the human meat.

That wont harm any other person physically but the whole world has not accepted it due to moral issues. So it is not just about whether it physically harms or not the other person.
Biologist have found how stem cells from fetus can help improve our lives in the world of organ creation for donation. You can make just about any organ including a penis from fetus stem cells. If people can quietly use their own fetus it will not physically harm any other person but the world has banned the use of fetus stem cells primarily due to moral issues. There is always the moral side of any issue.
For gay it is both the moral issue and the biological incompatibility at play.

  97. I don’t care whether someone is gay or not but what I don’t want is for people to force others to accept it.

I have also travelled far and wide into the West and East. Gays have been given some certain demands by way of legislation but they have not been given everything they demand. They want to be treated equal but this has not happen, why because, it is different from a male and female relationship. You can argue endlessly about this but it has not be totally embraced because biology doesnt agree. Nature which relates to biology has not agreed. I’m not talking about religion here. I’m talking about biology and the moral side of issues. So whether constitution allows, its fine. Be gay if you want to because people WANT to be anything but is still not normal from biology…

  98. Vibestar
You are missing the point. The Zambian constitution does not allow arrests for speaking about gay rights. I would find your arguments so incostitent to argue against. Thanks for reading nevertheless.

  99. Atase Koswe
Please have a sense of respect. If you fear God, why are you using insults? So much for God fearing?
