Work at Solwezi General Hospital was paralyzed yesterday after health workers protested against the gruesome murder of a Ukrainian Anesthetist doctor who was found shot dead in an unclear circumstances.

Solwezi General Hospital Medical Superintendent, Mathew Ng’ambi said the health workers at the institution were concerned and saddened by the death of Dr Sergiy Monachov whose services played a critical role for the community of North-Western province.

Dr Nga’mbi said workers at the health institution now fear for their lives as they do not know who is next, adding that another Ukrainian Anesthetist doctor was murdered in unclear circumstances barely two years ago.

Speaking during the meeting with provincial, Minister Nathaniel Mubukwanu, Solwezi General Hospital Public Relations Officer Levy Muna expressed worry that once such incidences continue, it will scare away foreign medical experts at the institution.

Mr Muna said that the health workers at Solwezi general hospital have in the recent past been experiencing incidences of murder and harassment by members of the community and claimed that the police in the province are not helping to bring the culprits to justice.

He said the workers will now be serving the community with fear once these issues remain unchecked.

And Provincial Minister, Nathaniel Mubukwanu said the murder of foreign doctors at Solwezi general hospital will send a negative signal to the outside world.

He said the trend does not reflect the nature of the Zambian people who he described as peaceful and assured that government will ensure that the assailants are brought to book without delay.

Mr Mubukwanu said the late Dr Monachov provided service that was very beneficial to the Zambian people and that government is saddened by his untimely death.

“Government has alerted the security agents in the country to ensure that culprits of bad vices are brought to book without delay, so I’m assuring you that my office will do everything possible to address the challenges you have raised,” he assured.

Dr Sergiy Monachov, 55, a Ukrainian national was over the weekend found shot dead in his right chest in an unclear circumstances at his house in hospital compound in Solwezi district.

He was an Anesthetist at Solwezi General Hospital where he had worked for only 8 months.

  1. If the Government prioritizes the training and subsequent good conditions of services for Zambian health workers, this would not be happening.

    • You have a point when it comes to training local personnel, but I feel that your statement somehow trivializes what has happened. I may be wrong, but maybe for now let’s mourn the dead and regret our actions, and then get into damage control later.

  2. Our investigating machinery in Zambia is very poor. We need to start having private detectives in Zambia. By the way is they any clue to the first murder? if not see my point.

  3. The problem is that the culprits of the 1st murder have never been found and prosecuted. What has the Police done since the last murder?Where is the Police Intelligence and Investigations team.Am sure they are following HH,Mumba and others to see if they will have indoor executive meetings. You now expect other expatriates to rush to the institution for work?

  4. These guys were killed by their own government assassins. this was not a robbery but an assassination, which is not accustomed to Zambia. The OP knows it and there is nothing they can do. So Zambian workers in Solwezi, go back to work coz no one is after you. You are doing a disservice to your own people by denying them health services while trying to fight for issues that not even your government can handle. So go back back to work. This is a Ukraine issue. Why not ask yourselves, of all the whites of different nationalities, working in the mines in Solwezi, only the Ukrainians were killed.

    • I don’t know how you got to that conclusion Big Muntu. Unless if you have more information than anybody else – in which case please assist the police. I believe there are many other Ukrainains working in the country. Have there been assassinations? It could even be the same criminals who murdered the other Dr two years ago, since they were never caught. Could these Drs been involved in some deals? Remember anaesthetics handle some of the ‘special drugs’ in the hospital. Just thinking.

    • Big Muntu, I can only relate with what you are saying as speculation. However, speculation being what it is, its better if you speak in the tone of one speculating, not one stating facts, unless you really do have facts in which case you can at least give us clues without necessarily exposing yourself.

  5. Very sad indeed, but ofcourse the Zambian government needs to go to the bottom of this with the help of the Ukranian govt just to ascertain the records of the two doctors. Something very fishy in this.

  6. We supply all hospital equipment from our suppliers from South Korea. We have been doing this to the UTH and Levy Mwanawasa Hospitals.
