Ericsson and Zamtel to demonstrate 4G mobile communications capability at UNWTO

Share

Ericsson and Zamtel have agreed to demonstrate their capability to deliver state-of-the-art Fourth Generation (4G) mobile commnications technology in a live Zamtel mobile communications network.

The demonstration which is the first ever in Zambia has been done at
the 20th edition of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) General Assembly 2013 being held in Livingstone.

This is according to a statement by Zamtel coporate and communications manager, Kennedy Mambwe here yesterday.

The first pilot live 4G mobile communications demostration using a mobile communications network underpins the shared vision of Zamtel and Ericsson to constantly innovate and push the technological envelope in delivering advanced mobile communications services in Zambia.

Zamtel and Ericsson are running the trial network on the side lines of the UNWTO conference running from 23 to 29 August.

The conference has attracted approximately 1 200 delegates from over 150 United Nations member states.

As one of the sponsors of the UNWTO 2013, Zamtel agreed with Ericsson to conduct a trial showcasing the benefits of the 4G technology – also known as Long Term Evolution (LTE).

The demonstration is being done using Ericsson technology and the Zamtel mobile communications network.

Commenting on the feat, Zamtel chief executive officer Mupanga Mwanakatwe said that Zamtel was excited about the development.

“We are extremely excited about this trial as it affords an opportunity for both Zamtel and Ericsson to showcase the very latest 4G mobile communications technology and demonstrate, in a live network environment, that it can operate smoothly on the robust Zamtel mobile network infrastructure.

“Delegates have the opportunity to experience the phenomenal speeds offered by 4G technology – which can deliver in excess of 50Mbps which represents a quantum leap in performance when compared to 3G technology which has typical speeds of 2-3Mbps,” he said.

Currently, there is no LTE network in Zambia and the trial is expected to showcase the immense benefits of the latest generation of mobile communications technology to Zambians and international delegates attending the UNWTO conference.

Ericsson sub-Saharan Africa, Head of Practice, Mobile Broadband Hans Piet said: “This pilot gives us an invaluable opportunity to showcase the enormous benefits of LTE (4G) to the delegates and reaffirm our technology leadership.

“Mobile Broadband is a game changer that will transform the ICT landscape in Zambia, open up whole new possibilities in the field of m-commerce and will shape how education and health is provisioned.

  1. ok,but the same 4G seems to failing in lusaka.hope its better than whats prevailing.
wondering why you are show casing it to UNWTO delegates when their countries are better in terms of technology.

    • There is no 4G in Lusaka, stop commenting on things you dont understand! The are just demoing that is all. You cannot even read what is written?

  2. Yes, mobile broadband of this much throughput is definitely a game changer. Both in terms of rewards as well as risks, depending on how and where it is applied. As the old adage goes ‘Change brings opportunities and devastation side-by-side’. Risks include increase in reach and hits by experienced shrewd tricksters and con-men from developed Countries. Rewards include less need to move from one’s village to urban centres for certain types of jobs, and hence help de-congest our filthy shanty townships. A very good tool for the Village Concept. Even for politicians, this technology will still be a mixed bag, i.e. good tool for campaigning, like Obama did, but bad tool if you want to censor people and news, like Sata is vainly trying to do.

  3. Why not first make fixed line broadband available and cheap then move to 4G. Mobile broadband is expensive and is out of reach for many Zambians. We need faster optical fiber broadband for homes and businesses. Let not not start jumping from tree to tree like proverbial monkeys!!

  4. Hon.Silvia was very nervous indeed, the speeches from our side lacked content, uninspiring were out-shined by the Zimbabwean counterparts. Please find other technocrats to draft your speeches at the closing ceremony and please Masebo maintain your original accent twapapata.

  5. I wonder whats going on in the country. Just because you are saying something opposite to whta is happening doe not mean you are been objective. If anything majority of students have talked to do not even understand the points they are trying to debate on. If you as them the best answer they will give you is ‘i heard somewhere’.
Classic exmple here is some chap claiming 4G does not work in Lusaka when 4G does not even exist in lusaka..
