University of Zambia (UNZA) Chancellor Jacob Mwanza has appealed to government to increase the budgetary allocation to the institution in order for it to mitigate the many challenges it is facing.

Dr Mwanza noted that the current allocation to the institution was not sufficient to ensure smooth operation of the highest learning institution in the land.
He said student accommodation and bursary are among the various challenges the school was grappling with.

Dr Mwanza further appealed to government to help UNZA improve its financial position in order to meet its growing financial obligations.

He however praised government for the on-going construction of student’s hostels which he said will greatly help in alleviating the accommodation crisis at the institution.

Dr Mwanza was speaking during the 44th graduation ceremony of 5, 964 students at the UNZA Great East Road Campus in Lusaka today.

Speaking earlier, UNZA Vice Chancellor Steven Simukanga disclosed that UNZA will next year embark on the construction of a Special Education Learning Center under the School of Education for physically challenged persons.

Prof Simukanga said the learning center will greatly change the lives of physically challenged children as it will have appropriate infrastructure and teaching aids to cater for their requirements.

Prof Simukanga also praised employers for assisting students develop their careers in their work places through the internship programme.

  1. Advise your Vice-Chancellor to be pro-active and interact with relevant institutions. This is not time for a VC to just sit in the office day in, day out. For instance, some finacial institutions can fund some Chairs (Senior positions in Faculties) and some activities that the University wants to undertake. This requires a sharp VC. How is it possible that in some countries the same banks, cell-phone companies, breweries, etc are financing university computer laboratories, supplying sports equipment to universities, etc and yet this not happening in Zambia? The reason is simple: Zambian Vice-Chancellors are sleeping on the job. They do not even know how dirty their campuses are. What a bunch of losers!
