Opposition UPND president Hakainde Hichilema has bemoaned the poverty levels in border town of Nakonde despite the amount of revenue the town collects at the border point.

And Mr. Hichilema has reiterated that agriculture production will be one of UPND’s key priorities as that was one sure of way alleviating poverty among the rural communities and lower the cost of food.

Speaking in separate meetings when he addressed scores of Nakonde and later Isoka residents during the campaign meetings in Muchinga province, Hichilema said a good portion of resources generated from Nakonde border point should be channelled to the development of the area’s infrastructure, such as health and education facilities.

He said he will continue a number of projects embarked by the previous regimes but this time with locally generated resources instead of excessive borrowing which is PF’s way of raising money.

“Even this place here is heavily endowed with good vegetation and it’s a border area. Locals should easily be exporting foods and other materials from this place. In fact, this place should have a local production industry as it would be easy to export without worrying about huge transport costs,” he told the crowd.

He reiterated that unemployment for the youths was a major challenge that should be tackled through deliberate measures favouring youth investments and SMEs.

“Like I have said, other than reducing the retirement age from 65 to 55 in order to create room for the youths, our party will embark on other deliberate policies meant to have more people, especially the youths be in gainful employment activities. There is nothing more demoralizing and frustrating than for the young, energetic, educated and skilled people have no opportunity to earn a decent living. Yet this is the current reality for many of the youths in Zambia today.”

Mr. Hichilema reminded the people that his childhood was tough due to poverty but was lucky because education helped him to go further using a government bursary.

“I owe everything I have to Zambia and now I want to serve my country to make sure everyone has that same opportunity to succeed.

We can achieve more and work towards a better Zambia. But we must do this together, united. I don’t care which province you come from or which tribe you are part of. We are all Zambians”, he said.

In Isoka, former MP Paul Sichaba, former District Commissioner and a number of businessmen joined the UPND.

Mr. Hichilema is today expected to continue with his campaign in Muchinga, visiting Muyombe, Tendere and Malole. Mr Hichilema will be accompanied by Lunte MP Honourable Felix Mutati and UPND National Chairperson Mutale Nalumango.

  1. I really do not think HH believes what he says. Iam sure he knows that what he says can not be achievd in this shortest of presidential terms. But pipo seem to belive him. Would be wrong if I call UPND a United Party for nuts and dander heads? And LTM ur worse than the post. Yo young HH propaganda is too much

    • HH knows and believes in what he is saying. The problem is that you “Other side” are an average person, perhaps even below average to comprehend. So pleasing to see HH in my neck of the woods…come 20th Jan, we are giving you the vote

    • There is some truth I what you say… not the renaming of UPND. HH and group need to give us realistic timelines for their promises. Any presidential term is not enough time. The visions are ok, but empty if not supported by statements on feasibility.

We r not, and should never, believe that we are doomed to be a country of misery forever.

    • @Other side please read what he said again. He never said that he would accomplish all that in the remaining term of MCS (MHSRIP). But he will surely lay the foundation. You need to change policy to create an environment where the youth can be employed, or employ themselves through either access to quality education or finance for good and bankable business ideas through SME funnding support.

    • Just because you were born in a family of failures, your relatives, starting from your grandfather to your last born, have failed to excel in anything apart from stealing doesn’t mean every other person out there is the same. Break that curse of poverty in your family by learning from HHs story of his rise from rugs to riches. Time for running after eloquent politicians like the late Sata or smooth criminals like Edgar Lungu is over. This country now needs economic managers. We need a person who can transform our economy for the benefit of all our citizens. No one eats politics or tribe. HH is not only an economic manager but a farmer too. He know what it takes to produce food. He is contributing a lot to our national food basket. Even fools like you are eating from his table in some way.

    • Poverty is the scourge of Africa. It is shameful. But Africa has been endowed with natural resources, probably like no other continent on earth. The reason why poverty persists in Africa is because of the quality of our leaders. With good leadership poverty levels can be reduced or eliminated.

Zambia has had more than its share of bad and visionless leaders. Once more the ball is in our court as voters to choose a better quality leader – one who will address our problem of poverty. I believe that HH deserves the benefit of a doubt from us. But it is all up to us, not up to him.

He loves us and wants to help. Others vying for leadership are doing so out of selfishness – so that they can have more money in their pockets. HH already has more money in his pocket. HH 2015.

    • look people, when HH says some thing we all seem to get in an intellectual dimension were we actually ask intelligent questions about leadership. that is the very opposite with Lungu, when he says something we all enter into a blank space and the only thing sensible thing to say is ‘ vote for Lungu’.
definitely there is something about HH that just seems to work and calls us to expect more than what he a can deliver. an not saying he is perfect but he is the only sensible option we get.

    • UKO UKO UKO UKO get out of the way PF and let UPND and HH pass.

PF had a chance but abused the Zambian people’s trust and reneged on their 90 days promise.

      PF is now renowned for

      – stealing from the farmers.
      – not paying students their meal allowances and yet its spending £15000 per student for the relatives of the PF officials studying abroad in UK and USA.
      – making the poor pay taxes for which they benefit totally nothing.
-duping the workers with a fake wage increase which was immediately zeroed by wage freeze and high cost of living.
      – intra and inter party violence with impunity.
      – intra party murders with impunity
-Corruption, embezzlement, nepotism, tribalism and plain lies.
-bloated cabinet with 80 cabinet officials.
      -bloated foreign service missions full…

    • ARM PIT what you describe about HH is a mark of not only a great leader but a great human being: The ability to make those around you expect better of themselves.
This is not only true of leadership but African culture as well ‘Ubuntu’.

“Live in such a way that people will be inspired by those unique qualities that you have and strive to live better lives for themselves.” ? Amaka Imani Nkosazana.

  2. PF was buried on 11/11/14,
Lungu has no vision of his own,
    Sampa is miles away,
The only hope for Zambia is HH.
If you think Vodga Lungu is the right man then let’s have live TV debates to discuss their plans for Zambia
    Viva Flight HH2015

    • Debates do not mean much. Look, Mitt Romney effectively out-debated Obama but was rejected at the polls. Facts are that Chipimo would win any political debate among the candidates; HH is making very ‘small’ promises. He has failed to deliver ‘big’ promises as Sata came with in 2011. HH has not pledged to reduce any taxes, really salary taxes are at an all-time low, HH has failed to state his position on mining taxes, we can all guess why. HH has failed to state his position on where he will obtain funds to finance his developmental ambitions considering Zambian Treasury is $5bn in debt. HH has failed to mention structurally detailed plans of rehabilitating the UTH.
Politicians come and go, what one tends to take away from it all is that they promise us no more than we can do for…

  3. Board Flight HH 2015 for Development and Unity.

Team HH WelcomeS Nakonde on board.

    Destination : State House
    Arrival ; 22 Jan 2015

  4. Firstly, reducing the retirement age seems very easy to say. The reason why the age has been pushed upward is simple, NAPSA is a channel for developmental projects for the country such as the building of Levy Mall, several projects as well as investing in the stock exchange, I presume, the largest institutional shareholder! Look, facts are that Zambia would benefit more from collective investment than from small business carried out by retiring individuals. In my opinion, if you work your life waiting for a pension, then you are effectively a failure.
So tell me HH, what makes you believe that Nakonde should be immensely developed when the majority of people purchasing products are from Lusaka, Copperbelt? HH is now cut from the same cloth as the old politicians he used to criticise!

    • Rubbish! HH is right. Let public workers continue retiring at 55 years to give employment space for new college graduates. At 55 people want to start doing their own things. I for one intend to retire at 45 years of age.

    • For me I have always thought HH is a stable leader who carries a valid point almost always when he speaks. I live in Muchinga province yes I said Muchinga province – when the Late President HEMCS made muchinga a province it is HH who spoke against it in fact in his own words he said that it is a schame to take a lot of money and development to the northen circut of the country – alas now HH comes to my back yard and says poverty in Nakonde dissapoints him wow, has he forgetten that Nakonde lies in Muchinga provice???????????

Lets be truthful, Sata made Muchinga a province because of the same challenges that HH has only managed to see now, Sata had promised to make Muchinga a province because FYI The people of Nakonde traveled twice the distance to access any provincial services

  5. In the past HH and UPND could not manage a single person in these areas. Now look at the poverty stricken faces waiting for salvation from Flight HH2015

    • What salvation iwe Mulenga? Those people should just work hard and not wait for government to put food on their tables. That is why we hate politicians because of the promises they make which they know deep down they can’t keep. At the end of the day, it’s just votes they want to get to state house period. Those far cars should just work hard not wait for EL or Nerver Mumbwe to give them far king food!

  6. In fact HH is promising too little. You will only despise this when you are used to setting lower objectives in your life.

If Rwanda can achieve greater economical development with minimal resources as compared to Zambia, why cant Zambia make it?

  7. Truth be told Zambia we deserve much better than what we are getting from PF. Do not think you mind that things cannot change for better. they can change.
We thought we cannot have these roads done but they have been done, in the same way if what HH is saying can be done. more business, companies and more schools and clinics these are engines of growth and prosperity.
The good thing is if you change leaders ach one comes with a goal to do something good for the people and so development is accelerated. Let us try HH and we will see development. do not be cheated he can develop this country better than the others on offer right now. vote HH for prosperity.

  8. Q: So Hon. EL, what is your education policy?

A: Ah Ah I am not the education minister, go and ask the education minister…..
    On radio Pheonix

    this just made my day.

we are voting for HH come 20.01.2015 bwana

    Chumbu Mulolwa
    Asp LT BB2015

  9. Thankfully for Zambia, we can count on HH this time around. A great opportunity is awaiting us to turn things around economically. We have a dynamic and vibrant economy that is waiting for a great mind to turn it around and reduce or eliminate the poverty in our country.

  10. ok watch this space! aluta continue! Even the bibles says that “the Poor you will always have”. So you can’t finish poverty but you can only mitigate to reduce the levels though this is more on individual basis!!!!

  11. You know this Edgar Lungu just seems to have awakened from sleep and realised he can be president. He does not seem to have any plans for anything or anyone. To me he seems so stupid. Junk. The day you Zambians will vote for him is the day I will **** out of this your country. Seriuosly.
