KK urges African countries to diversify economies

Share

kkFirst Republican President, Kenneth Kaunda, says Africa should take advantage of its abundant natural resources in order to diversify its economies and attract more foreign direct investment.[quote]

Dr. Kaunda said this in Johannesburg at the weekend when he received the lifetime achievement award from the African Heritage Society in recognition for his contribution to the liberation struggles in Southern Africa.

He told a 500 plus invited guests at the Sandton International Convention Centre that Africa should have achieved a lot in the fight against poverty after so many years of independence.

Dr. Kaunda said African countries have remained underdeveloped due to a number of factors some of which are due to the manner in which it is conducting its trade with the rest of the world.

He said Africa’s trade with other countries is lopsided as it is to a large extent only exporting raw materials.

Dr. Kaunda said Africa needs to develop its manufacturing sector to enable it attain sustainable comparative advantage and compete highly with the rest of the world.

He also cited agriculture as one of the neglected areas in Africa which could help in making many countries be self sufficient.

He said a well run agriculture sector could help establish many agricultural based industries and ensure food security for its people.

Dr. Kaunda, further, said the tourism sector was another sector which contributes enormously to the Gross Domestic Products, GDP, of many African countries.

He, however, said this sector has largely been neglected and the situation had been exacerbated by the current financial crisis which has affected international travelers.

Dr.Kaunda said the education and vocational training were critical to the continent’s development adding that the continent can only be competitive by having a qualified human resource.

“We cannot remain competitive in this world if we do not have an educated populace and a well trained manpower to run factories, mines, hospitals and schools. We can only compete by developing our human resource to provide necessary skills in order to enhance our productivity,” he said.

  1. What the old-man is saying is the only way forward for Africa. Why should countries like Zambia be exporting copper slug, ingots, etc instead of copper cables, copper pipes etc of all sorts and sizes?
We are doomed as a continent until we re-establish our manufaturing industry.
We can hear but we do not listen.

  2. How I like ““We cannot remain competitive in this world if we do not have an educated populace and a well trained manpower to run factories, mines, hospitals and schools. We can only compete by developing our human resource to provide necessary skills in order to enhance our productivity,” he [Kenneth Kaunda (Hon. Doc,?)] said” and I wished he extended it by saying we need educated Presidents in Africa and not just ones given honourary Doctorates.

  3. According to the UPND-PF PACT image builders, the POST, Kanneth Kaunda (Hon Doc,?) said “It is the sum total of the contributions of many people some of whom may not have the privilege to be recognized. Suffice to say that their contribution is no less in value because it provided a vital link to the realisation of our common objective,” and “There are many of our compatriots who are worthy this award. Africa will forever remain grateful for their service.”, something humble and powerful that even lone praised Mandela Nelson (Hon Doc,?) has not been indicated to have said.

    Real man.

I hope those who are accused to have done things alone when they served their country in various position will from now on emulate the real man Kenneth Kaunda (Hon. Doc,?) how has clearly acknowledged team work and not individual input to his achievements.

Such noble traits of real leaders are rare in Africa and the world world. I hope the world will come to a realisation that there are real heroes if Africa who helped South Africa reach where it is today even at the expense of the survival of their people.

Have a blessed day you all.

  5. When in 1991 I said removing KK without protecting his legacy, I was considered to be crazy and aligning myself witnh dictators. FTJ went on to even imprison KK. Today everybody is missing the Old Man because what FTJ did was to destroy the little KK had built because of inferiority complexies. This has been passed on: now RB is saying Mswati should find us investors!!! What craziness!!!
The point is that we Zambians to not respect and honour what we have. Remember: If you leave your mouth wide open, don’t blame the flies for playing in it! We Zambians have left our mouths open for a long time!
However, we can still correct the situation in the case of KK by making it govt policy that he is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in the next few years (for liberating southern africa).

  6. Stating the obvious. I wish I could give credit but telling people what they know is pointless. AFrica needs implementation rather than people giving good advice all the time. We have a lot of speakers and yet very few doers. Africans are forever taking advice and then letting the advice gather dust until the next advisor comes along to say the same thing over and over again. Just give it a month someone will come and say zambian needs to control it’s own wealth and you will see people laud that person but 5 years later zambians will still be taking the same advice

  7. Is this the same guy who run the economy down? Just shut up old man! You had 27 years to diversify the economy but you failed. Remember how the only jobs you could create were political jobs. Like the 30 Governors and Provincial Political Secretaries at freedom House without provinces or districts. And that dude at UBZ as Governor?

  8. ……is where blind shushushus like mbulawa commenting blindly.
U shut up as well and leave the grand man alone. he’s done better than the Joke we have right now

  9. u SATAN #11 Mbulawa says >>> STOP THAT NONSENSE.. KK SHARED THE NATIONAL CAKE WITH EVERY ZAMBIAN .. FREE EDUCATION, HEALTHY CARE.. ETC..

  10. No# 14 Kanjimaano, No# is right though he used language a little to strong. Kaunda did indeed have 27 years to diversify the economy. While Botswana was becoming democratic and laying a path to diverse industry and Art entities we were being given Capital( free ) education that would not be paid back. Let us not forget that our founding fathers in most African countries prevented our further growth mobility, yes we are greatful for the independence( liberty) they aquired, but remember you too would have fought had you existed then. As Zambians we need not dwell on hero worship, for Worship is reserved for the Lord God Jehovah. Be blessed my friends and love one another; work hard and love your wives as Christ loved the Church.

  11. To me this man KK is my number one Hero besides my parents. With all the heros in the World, Mandela, Mother Theresa, you name them. They don’t amount to much compared to what this man has achieved in my life

I grew up in a shanty compound and all they told me is just compete and be the best in school and the state will take care of the rest. I did just that and I have managed to go through the best schools the country could offer during KK’s time and I have been to the best Universities the world can offer without spending a dime. All I had to do is show up show them how smart I was.

It hurts me that today a kid growing up in a compound can’t be given the same promise in this MMD govt. Education is now for the elite. It doesn’t matter how smart a Kid..contd’d

  12. #16 Grateful son – God bless you for your gratefulness.

Alot of these kids dont know the greatness of Kaunda because they grew up in the filth of Chiluba, Mwanawasa and they think its the norm.

  13. from #16..It doesn’t matter how smart a kid is now. All these national treasurer robbers have really messed up the system, even the few scholarships other countries give to Zambia just end up with the people in authority’s dull children who add no value to the country. Corruption is just entrenched in the system such that the under privileged are sideline

Anyway KK you are my hero. I hope God keep you alive and give you many years to come so that you can come to launch my scholarship fund am working on. You are my NUMBER 1 HERO

  14. A Big up to you KK,you did your best though you took most of our resources in trying to liberate our nieghbours who unfortunately enough have entangled themselves in economical bondages(the case for zim).

You should have not liberated us from independence,we were much better under colonial rule, look at us now we are even afraid to go back to wallow in poverty.please tell the masters to come back we need them as investors. Now our leaders are seeking connections…yaba.

  15. Th west didn’t like KK because he could talk back to them and he was militant that is why the pushed for multi party system so that they can get rid of the old man. Of course KK was not perfect, he had his own problems but he had the nation at heart. With current demand for raw material like copper this man would have done wonders for Zambia. I personally think he good deeds far outway his bad decisions, all in all I think he is still the best President we have ever had in Zambia. KK knew the west had a conspiracy against Africa and he worked hard against them until he was set up by the IMF/ WB/ CIA/M16 funded MMD. We need a young KK, a nationalist leader for the 21st century. Western ideas have failed us, MMD has failed us and multi party politics has failed the nation.

  16. They Weat only has vocal range because our leaders wanted to be treated like royalty and thus excluded the rest of the denizens from the fray. If we were included like Japan well watch that country and learn. I study the past to make my future great. Love Jesus all.

  17. Tax the heck out of the mines. It is that simple. Reduce the size of central government to start delivering services at the local level. Use money from the mines to invest in other economic sectors – agriculture, manufacturing and infrastructure.

Of course, that means that those ministers and MPs that are in the pockets of the mines have to be called out. We all know who makes the loudest noice when anyone threatens to effectively tax the mines. They have to go.

Until there is a government in place that will tax the mines, nothing is going to happen. Such a government needs to look out for Zambia’s interest ONLY, not the mining companies, not ‘be fair to them too’, no consideration at all.

These are our resources, and they are being stolen right from under us.

  18. Tax the mines! It is that simple. If the government wants to have the money available to invest in agriculture, manufacturing and infrastructure, they have to start taxing the mines. Otherwise, all they can do is borrow and inflate the currency, meaning that everyone in the country pays for it through inflation, instead of the mines paying for it.

This means that we need cooperation within Southern Africa, so that no government which does this can be singled out and retaliated against like Zimbabwe, and no leader can be assassinated for it like Laurent Kabila or Patrice Lumumba.

Economic diversification is serious business, because it fundamentally shifts the balance of power away from the West, and towards Africa.

  19. Today, the West is exploiting Zambia – because like all African countries, we send them far more than we receive from them. For instance, in 2004, Zambia sent the West $4 billion in copper and cobalt, and received $600 million in donor aid.

We need to get rid of politicians who shield the mines from taxation. We all know who they are, their smirking faces cover The Post, boasting that with them in charge, the windfall tax will not come back. They always make the loudest noise when anyone even threatens to tax the mines.

We also need to collaborate through SADC and the AU, so individual countries and governments cannot be isolated and retaliated against by the West.

Economic diversification is serious business, because it moves power away from the West and to Africa.

  20. # 16 .. I assume you were a sixer at mpelembe… A solid non discriminatory programme.. In otherwords… KK ensured we all had a chance at living the American dream as long as one was smart.. 4 me he was my hero.. in todays Zambia do you think the late Levy, george Kunda who grew up in Mpatamatu Township, the george Sokota’s that grew up in Chamboli/ Wusakile, and the many other people holding high and priviledged jobs in both public and private sector would have had the same opportunity they were accorded???????

  21. Nationalist,

” west didn’t like KK because he could talk back to them and he was militant that is why the pushed for multi party system so that they can get rid of the old man. ”

Exactly. The IMF forced the country into multi-party democracy in 1991, and towards Frederick Chiluba, and they forced the country to privatise the mines in 1999, making Zambia miss out on a historic boom in copper prices – total cost: over $10 billion.

We need nationalistic leadership, which looks after the interest of the Zambian taxpayer first, not foreign mining corporations.

  22. On Dr. Kaunda said Africa needs to develop its manufacturing sector to enable it attain sustainable comparative advantage and compete highly with the rest of the world“, Kenneth D. Kaunda (Hon. Doc.,?)” the brother is saying sense only that the MMD does not know what to do. I believe, Zambia has enough learned people to embark on massive manufacturing companies backed by successful business and project management practices.

This can be accompanied by Information Technology resources created in Zambia through use of open source systems. 2011 is a defining time.

  23. Mwanawakwitu,

” MrK No# 26 you are a Genious I wonder how long this has been going on. ”
Well thank you very much. This has been going on since ‘independence’, which was really only political independence, not economic independence (and of course it went on during colonialism before that, in the open, without apology).

When African countries became independent, they simply moved from colonialism to neo-colonialism as Kwame Nkrumah called it, through continued foreign ownership of the economy.

We need to take back the mines, and start capacity building to fill our economies with our own CEO’s, farmers, business people, etc. That can be done by returning to universal education and healthcare as were practiced under UNIP and before the IMF got hold of them.

  24. Coming to politics, the One-Party system was really cool as it gave us One Zambia, One Nation that sadly the MMD way of practising multi-party politics have broken down to tatters, hence the emergence of tribalism during the Chiluba Administration that has todate left us Zambians being ruled under divide and rule method. This is why all corrupt minded individuals who served under former President FTJ Chiluba mustnt be allowed to assume the Presidency of Zambia while they can be let to get spoils of Minister and advisor positions in a Zambia led by intellectuals.

  25. Maestro my brother I like how you point out the Honorary degrees of al these old political figures. But you and I know that we get learned in schoool but education starts with your famly. Great notion we should all know is Zambia shall only develop when we realise god is our saviour. Then that brings about the respect of human resource which is the greatest resource.

  26. Our goal should be to create a giant middle class (90% of the people or more), of people earning at least $10,000 per year. Zambia has a huge potential for productive development. 80% of arable land is not under cultivation, only 3% of arable land is under irrigation (think of the huge floodplains of the Kafue and Zambesi rivers that are not being used for agriculture, not being dammed, etc.). Just using organic agriculture, we can create food surpluses, and do that in a way that is labour intensive (no giant soil mining agribusinesses, but soil building to create productive agricultural land for centuries of generations to come).

  27. MrK #26, am lost. Does it mean that the copper and cobalt we send to the West is on an exchange basis; as in you give me copper, i give you aid ? Am not economic savvy so I like things kinda ***** proof!

  28. Anyone who has followed Zambian politics would agree with me that former President KK supports the UPND’s manifesto as it has close to what he espoused for Zambia in his time of being number one man.

I thus hope honourable Sata MC (Grade 2/6, unknown) will for once apologise for his dividing Zambia under the Chiluba Administration and make amends by support any of the UPND’s leaders to lead the UPND-PF PACT in the 2011 presidential elections. Once this is done, Zambia can possibly have accelerated development by using the UPND manifesto that would be beefed up with the PF’s.

  29. 34 Mwanawakwitu greetings and thanks. On your “Great notion we should all know is Zambia shall only develop when we realise [G]od is our saviour. Then that brings about the respect of human resource which is the greatest resource.” This is real true and what I like about it is that Zambians respect God by going to church unlike our European counterparts although our deeds still leave much to be desired. My understanding is that USA is at that level because those US Citizens built that country on Christian principles which we can also do. Reconciliation!

  30. #36/37 – Maestro Hakucincha you have so many words. Are you a preacher by any chance?

oops I just did it to myself, here he comes!

  31. 38 Woman of substance greetings. On your “Are you a preacher by any chance?“, Yes I am a preacher but not a regular one — I last preached about 2 weeks ago here in Stuttgart.

By the way, are you are real woman? What substance do you have or have to offer?

    Have a tellingly nice day.

  32. Maestro Hakucincha,

” Coming to politics, the One-Party system was really cool as it gave us One Zambia, One Nation that sadly the MMD way of practising multi-party politics have broken down to tatters, hence the emergence of tribalism during the Chiluba Administration that has todate left us Zambians being ruled under divide and rule method. ”
There is a way to take region and tribe out of national politics – which is give 50% of national revenues directly to local authorities. That will make public services available at the local level, no matter where in the country they live, and no matter who is elected to national office. Put local authorities in charge of delivering basic services – education, healthcare, policing, utilities and administration.

  33. #28 Digga, you guessed right. I was in the second group of form six at Mpelembe. It was a fair system. Even those that went to UNZA and UTH medical school can testify what a privilege it was. And most of my UNZA trained Doctor specialists here in SA are so grateful to KK’s policy on education.

Looks like the current crop of leaders is hell bent on keeping the population illierate so they can buy their votes with a bag of mealie meal during elections. They don’t realise that Govt needs taxes from its people and an educated population will give you more in terms of taxes. I guess with donor money ..they just can’t be bothered to create a middle class that would fund the budget without donor aid.

  34. 43 MrK greetings. On your “There is a way to take region and tribe out of national politics – which is give 50% of national revenues directly to local authorities. … Put local authorities in charge of delivering basic services – education, healthcare, policing, utilities and administration.“, this s definitely the way forward as I have obsereved it in France. The politics in France appear to be centralised in Paris, but regions called departments, I think, have got power to run the social and business systems. To this end even Foreigners like myself benefit nicely.

  35. Picking it up from the the accelerated socio-economic development, Zambia can use high-tech abilities like GIS in connection with remote sensing data to help farmers do much better than now by monitoring crops health and better land to grow stuff which digital elevation model can be used to build infrastructure in right places. As at now, MMD is practising politics of responding to the POST and what the opposition people are reported to have said therein instead of using their mandate to uplift Zambians from their current economic life impairment. The President is busy with such also.

  36. I hear Xavier Chungu is sweating from a bout of food poisoning, good! So many people were either poisoned or shot dead during this satanic creep’s tenure at Red Brick. He should just silently enjoy his chickens coming back home roosting.

  37. Chungu should stop “kulilalila monga kamwana sure, alah.” Sooner than later, he will meet Dean, Tembo, Ngenda, Wezi, Baldwin, Kaulung’ombe etc, people whose lives he “touched” at the behest of no other than Kafupi. There will be war in the after life and for Chungu I hope it will be sooner than later. Besides, he looks so well fed, why?

  38. I could not help laughing at Brig. General Miyanda’s pathetic meandering. He claims he was shocked to see Banda’s picture hanging over the head of the judge, how could he forget his menacing physical presence, as vice president, in the supreme court when the Public Order Act was struck off our statute books? He from there went straight to parliament to re-enact another one which came back to bite him in the prat after he left office, recall his Kabwe rallies cancelled to give way to a “vinyau” show!edited

  39. Banda is a blind man, walking and talking aimlessly everyday and yet KK’s silence is deafening, why? He was so vocal against Mwanawasa. I honestly wonder why, is it a case of “umhodzi khumawa?”

  40. KK always talked about education, agric, health. his ministers followed suite. this encouraged even those parents who had no formal education to send thier childred to school. even the poor in the villages and towns could get scholarships abroad. today scholarships are only for children of thoses in power and there bootlinkers. they don’t care about the rest of Zambia. YES MrK, we desperately need a nationalist. I here you MrK, no wonder these mmd crooks will never tax the mines becouse they are on “the payroll”. very sad.

  41. Can the current MMD leadership stimulate agriculture sector? I doubt if this their prioritry other than exchanging insults with the opposition PF/UPND.

  42. Like others have said, we like to hear and listen. What we are not able to do is practice. Once we begin to practice what we hear or learn, we shall see development. If you think anout it, a country cannot develop without a tool industry. We have to be in a position to make basic tools.

  43. You, Young Boys, don’t remember much in the Kaunda era. Lack of free Speech. Hards times, no soap, cooking oil, bead in shops. Kaunda had his good points, but I can’t understand hero worship of some of you guys, I was there . Saddam Hussain developed bio chemicals in Zambia, funny cult groups from India were invited to build temples in Zambia, because they had visions that KK would be president for life, go look it up. Are you people forgetting the hundreds of people that died during the up rising for multi-party elections in 1990.

  44. #11 was born in 1991 leave him he doesnt even know anything. Mwaiche we used to get free toothpaste, Chloroquine and Milk biscuits at school. we even went to welfares halls called olofare not back yard nursery schools. Viva KK. NAMBOARD, SILOS he had good plans for Zambia.

  45. Kelvin i had a better life in Kaunda era than now. we never had this nonsense of greediness we had short supply of the commodities because he wanted to promote local manufacturing which gave birth to Tarino drink, dambo and saladi. Free speech was not of any use and upto now we dont have it. he was better than these clowns who have taken over the country. He had a vision for Zambia.

  46. K.K should be the last person to speak on ecoomic issues…..the man was a total failure!!Us who grew up during his dictatorship know better!!The man was a mess…long ques for anything from bread to sugar……absolute rabbish!!!

  47. ok those of you that are dissing KK for shortage of commodities in the country and long queues. My q is are the available comodities manufactured in Zambia? They are all imported and the few that we had in ZCBC Mwaisen and Niec where locally produced. what you do not understand is that they could not produce enough for the whole country hence that Shortage in all he wanted to encourage local manufacturing. i do not have any pride in the availability of the commodities that are found in Zambia and 99.9 percent are imported. What do u xport as Zambia? Copper? Do you benefit? who can buy boom detergent paste on international market? i hear you even have yolimba soap. what a joke you do not have anything of your own and KK wanted us to have something of our own. Build Zambia buy Zambian.

  48. We salute you KK!
However, I wish KK had also mentioned the need to have equipment in our high learning institution like universities and the UTH. We can have all the learned man power, but without high tech equipment we cannot achieve much. Right now, Zambia is one of the most poorly equipped country in the world when it comes to high tech operations and research.

We have the man power, but we need equipment!
Thank you KK because you have proved that even now you are far better than RB.

  49. Just because the current government has failed, does not mean we need to hero worship KK. Chikumbutso , you are right about Building Zambia buy Zambia, but Things happened because KK pushed us to One extreme and when he fail, it went completely the other way with no proper leader. ( FTJ, less said the better). Zambia became a place, where Dog eats Dog. Educated people became Meaningless in Zambia, you just needed to become a dealer to survive, that was the sad part. Lets learn from our past , I know things will come right in Zed, because I believe, and will never Stop.

  50. # 63 Most of you have just forgotten that the late 80s African/ Asian economy was affected by the western imposing capitalism onto such socialist countries as Zambia. KK never failed. The wind of capitalism popularly known as Democracy gave birth to “dealers” such as Chiluba.

  51. This is man we should blame for all our suffering in zambia, the worst dictator, the looter of all our resources, single handedll led the country into bankruptcy, the most greed and evil president we have ever had.

  52. President RB Banda has lied again according to th POST which reported “I thank my party MMD for being the national party, what they are, that in the last election they proved that they are a party for everyone in this country because my candidature proved wherever I stood because I stood in all 150 constituencies. I was either number one or number two. We were seven of us, I was never number three in any constituency, Your Majesty.” for there only 4 presidential candidates in the 2008 by-election namely: HH, Sata, B. Gen. Miyanda and President RB Banda. Incapacitation?

  53. Of course no one can forget queing up for washing powder at ZCBC for baby nappies, but the nappies were free from ZCCM!!
Cooking oil was the worst que.. one had to borrow a Nurses uniform in order to avoid the que….hahhhhahhh!!

  54. 63 kelvin and 64 Soothsayer, your nice references to “dealer to survive ….” and “… Democracy gave birth to “dealers” such as Chiluba …” respectively is enlightening about President RB Banda’s use of “connections” that I am told Swaziland’s King Mswati has and can help Zambia with to bring in foreign investment.

Such such mentality from the top leadership our great Nation, Zambia will never develop as only hard work from Zambians with right government policies can move us in a socio-development path.

    Have a blessed day all.

  55. There are some rocket scientists who think they own this blog….I havent mentioned any names.they know themselves!!

  56. In looking at the great honour former President KK was been given as expressed in “Dr. Kaunda said this in Johannesburg at the weekend when he received the lifetime achievement award from the African Heritage Society in recognition for his contribution to the liberation struggles in Southern Africa“, I would like to appeal to him to look into coming up with a scholarship fund for university students in all pubilc and private universities in Zambia. He does not have to do this alone, but can seek partnerships as in the Mandela Rhodes scholarship if I am correct.

    Be blest all.

8 I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

  57. What did KK do for Zambia anyway which the young generation is enjoying. All talk and useless actions from our politicians- all of them including KK. Why did’nt he do it himself- he was too drunk with power like the current leadership. Zambian politicians think once they make comments which even a grade seven child can nowadays make, they think they have done the job Just enjoy your retirement big man. U run down this economy to favour the liberation struggles which have had no benefit to us. Just sit down KK. Ikalafye mdala!!!!

  58. Kaunda had a great many good points, dont get me wrong. Infact i think to this day he is the only Zambian with true international recognition and respect. Whatever respect he lost during his time as president, he seems to have regained it in the manner in which he conducted himself during and after the transition of power. KK is from the old school and his methods are not todays, but i think he is mature enough to realise this. Some contributors are praising him purely because they got “free benefits” – that is a slave mentality. One of bondage and poverty. KK social policies were definately better because thats what was required at the time and that was his idealogy (socialist, distributive, humanism). Things could have been better on the economic mgt. Overall, great man. Proud by Assoc

  59. Let us remove the idea that for a country to develop it has to be a christian nation. China is not a christian nation and up to now is persecuting christians especially Catholics. It is the 3rd largest economy. India is also not a Christian country.

  60. #9 Mbewe

I agree with you that KK deserving a Nobel Peace Prize.

May be we should petition our Govt to seriously take this matter up. KK deserves to be recognised as a man of peace. Unless we Zambians demand this recognition, no one else will do it for us. Let us bring this issue to the Govt and RB. We can collect signatures from people. I am sure the word will take note. Certainly Southern African leaders will support it. Mandela has a very powerful and vibrant team around him that markets his achievements. We need a similar team around KK. He does not need image builders, but clever and intellegent sales agents selling a world class product (Him). Let’s do it for KK before he dies.

  61. congulates big man. your labour was not in vain.you have always bring proud to the people of zambia both at home and abroad.

  62. Its good to give credit where it is due, but i dont believe Kaunda has always been the saint that we are now depicting. Perhaps we have selctive memories or have just chosen to forgive, both are permisible. But lets not kid ourselves, Kaunda knows he has some explaining to do to saint Paul.

  63. Due to KK’s good relinguishing of power habits in 1991 when he still had 3 years to go before new elections, I have been thinking that it would have been better to allow him finish late Mwanawasa’s term which is clearly being miused by the current MMD leadership that seems to have not plan for Zambia. This should have been done by having a UPND PACT sponsoring him as a presidential candidate while president HH (MBA,UK) and honourable Sata (Grade 2/6, unknown) would have waited for 2011.

How I wish such happened last year so that sober minds with a focus to develop Zambia would have led Z.

8 I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
9Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in…

  64. The younger generation may not fathom what life and the world was in 1964 and beyond. It certainly was not anywhere near what we have today. How many educated Zambians did we have? How many university graduates, how many universities and colleges, how many ssec and pri schools? How many Zambian families had enough money tp pay for their education and health care if they were asked to. Externally, countries around us were not independed and their rulers were hostile to Zambia. And remember we are landlocked. We needed to import oil and export copper. Few of our current leaders could have done as much as KK did under the circumstances, despite his short comings. FTJ, RB, Sata, HH? Let us be realistic. Even in our day KK may do better than our current crop of leaders.

  65. #44, You have hit the nail on the head. Current Zambian leaders are a disaster. The tragedy started with having Chiluba as president. KK had a clean team. Unfortunately, now we have former Mandrax dealers and corrupt people being embraced by the powers that be. What a pity.

  66. #80 Maestro

Wonderful run away imagination. Oh, let the old man enjoy his retirement. We honour him for serving Zambia.

We must move on, we need young and energetic people to take as forward. Someone like Obama.

HH is fine but I think his alliance with Sata may be his undoing. I cannot see Sata working under HH.
May be if the MMD can produce within their ranks an Obama that can do us well. Looks like the party has gone to the dogs so it may be difficult for honest and well meaning people to rise through the ranks.

We have a lot of energetic and able Zambians who can do well up there, if only they can weave through the current political leadership. Otherwise you have to be hand picked – like LPM by FTJ and RB by LPM. How about that?

  67. mburawo should have respect for the big man, doesnt he know that that kk is the national hero. he shouldnt forget that today we are enjoying freedom which is as the result of the fruits of his labour.our forefathers played the part in liberating this country from colonialism africa inclusive. nevertheless the challenge we have today is to liberate ourself ecomonically.i agree with the bigs man advise the best for us is to diversify our economies. thanks big man and keep it up with your good advises.its true i think kk should be considered for the nobel peace award because he has contributed towards the improvrment of livehood for humanity as his slogan states love your Lord your God with all your heart your soul your strength and your mind and love your neighbour as you love yourself

  68. 83 UK-Zed Observer greetings. Folowing your “Oh, let the old man enjoy his retirement. We honour him for serving Zambia“, I made it clear that KK should have been sponsored to do the 3 years he lost in 1991 by a possible hinsight UPND-PF PACT in the 2008 elections to run against President RB Banda. UNIP could have joined the PACT also, I believe, but this is just wishful thinking and nothing more.

2011 is for the young people and your “HH is fine but I think his alliance with Sata may be his undoing. I cannot see Sata working under HH.” shouldn’t worry you.

    Psalm 16:
8 I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
9Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.

  69. Maybe RB, should ask VJ to organize his connections in Columbia to Invest in Zambia. VJ has a lot of connects. I can still remember his tablet making machine in KK’s era, Self- confessed Drug Dealer, yet the MMD are very proud of him. but *82 “KK had a Clean Team”, I guess you were too young to remember, how government paid Cars disappeared with cabnet members and a minster was wanted in Zimbabwe for pouching Rhino.

  70. The problem now is that KK is too slient with RB’s administration meaning that he has been compromised some how because they are related. KK had a lot to say during Chiluba and Mwanawasa’s time but is too slient on RB. Stop the double standards big man otherwise the majority of us Zambians appreciate SOME of the good things you did for the nation and clearly others are not too happy with what you did sometimes. Definately we need a young nationalist leader to take us through the 21st century. We don’t want free masons, secret society members, IMF/ WB henchmen and capitalist sell out niggers. We want leaders with a vision to transform our great nation into a semi paradise at least. Power has to be removed from politicians to ordinary people. Vote power is not enough, we need more.

  71. Human nature is difficult to understand. If a man from Mars read this blog he would wonder how such a man with glowing tributes was removed from power in the most democratic elections Zambia has ever had. No one can deny the fact that KK was a good leader until the introduction of one party state when he started detaining his political opponents under the Emergency Act with some dying in mysterious circumstances unlike LPM legacy. This was accompanied by a deteriorating economy. It is better to let sleeping dogs lie. Unfortunately Zambia’s demography has changed allegedly because of AIDS. Most of the senior citizens who experienced hardship such as eating sweet potatoes for breakfast and bathing with washing powder have passed on.

  72. To all those who came out trying to shoot me down please remember one thing before you continue with your KK psychophancy! Kaunda inherited the richest sub saharan African country in 1964 excluding South Africa. Zambia was even far more developed in Television transmission than South Africa. When this semi literate guy took over the country, the economy did not shoot up but went downhill. For example in 1964 copper production in Zambia was at 750 000 tonnes. Kaunda drove the industry down to about 230 000 tonnes by 1990. Kaunda was a big economic failure. It is your desperation that you will even think about this guy in a positive light .What he did to the Zambian economy was a scandal. Honestly how can you fail to diversify an economy in 27 long years ?

  73. #91 To be fair to Kaunda, you have missed one crucial point in your copper example which is that, copper prices on the world market collapsed in 1979, how then did you expect KK ‘s admin to still be producing 750,000 tonnes when there was no demand for copper and with low prices. I could be wrong but by 1990, the price of copper was between 1500 – 2000 USD$ per tonne. It was not easy for them to diversify with no steady revenue coming out of Zambia. Now though things have changed, copper is in great demand and I personally feel that if we have someone like KK or someone with some UNIPists ideas right now, Zambia would benefit greatly. KK was not perfect but he definately was a good nationalist to some extent.

  74. #92 Ba Bachelor can you then please explain to me why Chile that was producing 500 000 tonnes in 1964 did not see a reduction in Copper production when the so called prices went down? Today Chile producers 5.5million tonnes of copper. Zambia only produces 10% of that i.e 550 000 tonnes today. Ba Bachelor the truth of the matter is that the copper industry like the rest of the economy was mismanaged.

  75. #93, I may agree with you that there was some element of mismanagement in the copper mining industry but I think that KK’s admin did us a favour by reducing copper production levels because had the maintained the 1964 production levels, most of the copper would have been finshed by now. The other reason I think is that most of the copper profits were used in the liberation struggles of our neighbours. I think the best policy though was that all copper mines were nationalised just like Chile did. While we in Zambia decided to privatise (MMD) our national assets the chileans nationalised all major mines and today are the largest producers of copper in the world and all copper benefits go back to the country. We need to follow the chile route and nationalise all known mines in Zambia.

  76. #91 Mbulawa. You are quite right. People often forget how rich this country was at independence. From US$ 2 billion of foreign exchange to NEGATIVE US$ 7 BILLION after 27 years Of KK’s rule. Zambia’s economy was bigger than that of Singapore. However, where I do not agree with you, is where you seem to be attributing the deterioration of the economy due to the semi literate or semi illiterate guy (half full or half empty). If economic progress was due to literacy of the president then Zimbabwe’s economy would have done much better under Mugabe with reportedly 7 degrees and that the economy of RSA is headed downhill after the assumption of power by Zuma. Zuma is semi literate like KK. Our own economy is not doing very well under a president with a degree.

  77. 95 Senior Engineer RTD, on your “If economic progress was due to literacy of the president then Zimbabwe’s economy would have done much better under Mugabe with reportedly 7 degrees and that the economy of RSA is headed downhill after the assumption of power by Zuma, I would like to mention that some of Zimbabwean leader’s 7 degrees were done while he was in prison under correspondence. This means he just crammed stuf and had not privileged llearning under proper mentors. Hence his poor performance.

However, it must be understood that Mugabe is also under pressure to overstay.

8 I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
9Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in…

  78. 95 Senior Engineer RTD, on former Zambian President KK following your “Zuma is semi literate like KK“, please let us learn to appreciate truth. KK attended formal education and is a qualified teacher having also learnt at Fort Hare (sp.?) university in South Africa, and so he can’t be be equivalent to President Zuma J. who just did about 4 grades in formal school. On “Our own economy is not doing very well under a president with a degree“, Mr President is just too old and you can tell from his statements (recent lies) that his memory is at stake. Hence, his performance.

    Psalm 16:
8 I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
9Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in…

  79. The best example of an educated leader and making comparisions should start with late (former) President LP Mwanawasa who had formal school lessons until university and not some characters whose education was done in a hide and seek manner.

As for President Jacob Zuma, let us give him some time to weigh his capabilities. However, we should also consider the way the South African goverment works as it is the only one in Southern Africa which managed to help a sitting President Thabo Mbeki resign nicely and whose caretaker President Kgalema did not seek to override institutions to stay.

    Psalm 16:
8 I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
9Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.

  80. #91 Maestro Hakuchincha. Mbulawa is the one who classified KK as semi literate. After all the definition of “literacy”, is the ability to read and write at a conventionally accepted level. Perhaps Mbulawa’s understanding of “conventionally accepted level” is much higher than ours. My point was that degrees do not rule a country. I believe in “amano yacifyalila” loosely translated as inborn intelligence which can be improved upon by some education not necessarily a degree.

  81. At independence in 1964 Zambia was the second richest country in Africa, second from Egypt. Our Kwacha was equal to a Pound and stronger than a US Dolar. When he lost elections in 1991, Zambia was one of the poorest in Africa while that was the oposite in Botswana. There were no drugs in the hospitals,no desks in schools, only one univesity while Zimbabwe had ten univesities, shortage of transport, shortages of essential commodities just to mention a few. So this man had 27 yrs and failed. Now he goes to SA to say something that he failed to do. If he was a good leader we wouldnt have voted for ka Kafupi. Sorry!

  82. 99 Senior Engineer RTD thanks. I now understand your standpoint. It is therefore sad that 91/3 Mbulawa classified our Zambian big grandpa. man KK as “… this semi literate guy took over the country….

To this end, I ask my fellow Citizen Mbulawa to put truth ahead of emotions. Former Zambian President KK indeed had problems in ruling Zambia especially amidst other Southern African countries then still under colonialism and/or oppression that could not offer back-to-back trade/markets and so let us just concentrate on his positives that far outweigh negatives.

  83. 100 Weston greetings. On your “… only one univesity while Zimbabwe had ten univesities….“, when was CBU tunred into a university. What is the definition of a university.

When was University of Zimbabwe built and did start operating? Whose money was used to build university of Zimbabwe? Is UNZA older than university of Zimbabwe?

When did the colonialists leave Zimbabwe and Zambia respectively? Which country among Zambia and Zimbabwe enjoyed infrastructure development during the colonial rule?

When was Kafue Gorge Power Station built? TAZAMA? TAZARA?

    Lets be real.

8 I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
9Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in…

  84. Nobody has talked about KK’s greatest gaffe, “oil from grass”. It is actually true, although very difficult to extract the sugar that is contained in the fibrous, woody, and generally inedible portions of plant matter of trees and grasses. It is called cellulosic ethanol. A technological breakthrough and in view of the amount of trees and grasses, agricultural and forestry wastes available in the world this would kill the oil industry and would ensure that this technological breakthrough is not attained. A professor at MIT claims that his efforts to do research in the use of methanol in cars in the 1970s when the price of oil soared to unprecedented levels were thwarted by oil companies. See the website “ Methanol at MIT: Industry Influence charged in Project Cancellation”.

  85. Dalitso, ” MrK #26, am lost. Does it mean that the copper and cobalt we send to the West is on an exchange basis; as in you give me copper, i give you aid ? Am not economic savvy so I like things kinda ***** proof! ”

Well it seems to work like that. The west objects to taxation, but every year it sends government-government ‘donor aid’. This donor aid stops as soon as things are done like taxing or nationalizing corporations and mines.

    For the year 2004:
Exports in copper and cobalt: $4,000 million
(Estimated profit to western corporations): $2,400 million)
    Donor aid: $600 million
Taxes paid by all mining companies: $6 million

In effect, through our copper exports, we are subsidizing our own ‘donor aid’ 4 times over.

  86. Hi Maestro, 45 Physicist Maestro Hakucincha, ” 43 MrK greetings. ”

There are many systems we can adapt to our own needs. The Swiss Canton system would be an extreme example of decentralisation.

  87. (with lots of consultation) be adjusted to Zambian circumstances and needs.

For instance if local government size was so small that it was much smaller than any ‘tribe’, it would take tribalism, regionalism, etc. out of national politics in the equitable distribution of national resources. This would counteract the divisive nature of the colonial/post-colonial state with it’s random borders, and make secession irrelevant. Unlike for instance decentralisation to the provincial level.

  88. Hi Tonga Bull,

54 Tonga Bull, ” KK always talked about education, agric, health. his ministers followed suite. this encouraged even those parents who had no formal education to send thier childred to school. even the poor in the villages and towns could get scholarships abroad. today scholarships are only for children of thoses in power and there bootlinkers. they don’t care about the rest of Zambia. YES MrK, we desperately need a nationalist. I here you MrK, no wonder these mmd crooks will never tax the mines becouse they are on “the payroll”. very sad. ”

This is the direct effect of the privatisation of the mines, which leaves them in foreign hands. As soon as anything might be done to threaten their profits, they a) threaten to leave and

  89. b) their representatives in parliament and society start advocating for their cause, and say silly things like ‘the mines are gone’ (gone where?). The first thing western governments threaten African governments with is that they might ‘scare away foreign investors’.

  90. 67 Miss Daisy, ” MR K… i concur with you 100% ”

Well thank you very much Miss Daisy.

The most revolutionary act anyone on this blog or in society can do right now, before the 2011 elections is this: please read “Bad Samaritans”, by Cambridge economics professor Ha-Joon Chang (he’s also on Youtube, so please check that out too). He’s very funny and Chang gives a brilliant description of how the countries that are now developed, really developed, including all the ‘Asian Tigers’ that are put forward as examples of development through ‘free trade’. This is most of the knowledge you need to challenge politicians or voters in the upcoming elections.

Right now I’m reading The Bush Agenda by Antonio Juhasz, and it has an entire section on Zambia in it.

  91. its upsetting that people who have failed the nation once can have the audacity to stand up and seem to know the answer today for the prosperity of the economy.May be that is why they called us stupid *****s because we can praise them even if they once failed us.They know that we are incapable beings of calling a spade a spade.

  92. That is why Kaunda called us stupid *****s because we are incapable beings who can not call a spade a spade. We can not say it on his face to go to hell and revive the nation he once failed.

  93. #113 Needy I think the point of all this is that indeed KK had some serious misgivings but after Independence they managed to build hospitals, clinics, roads and a number of Zambians including myself benefited from the free Education which has eluded so many Zambians. In 1991 when he was defeated by Chiluba he accepted which was very noble unlike what we see in some states. But as for Chiluba with all the goodwill he had from the Nation he squandered it and started stealing from the Nation. Hence I agree with those calling for a nationalist leader that is the only way Zambia can go forward with someone who has the country’s ineterests at heart.

  94. #114 kasman, you are saying that because you bebefited from him. Are you saying that other countries have not built those imflustructures you are talking about? Infact he was suppose to build better ones and improve the economy at the same time, but he failed to improve the economy. It is not because Kasman has benefited and is doing fine no.

  95. ” #114 kasman, you are saying that because you bebefited from him. Are you saying that other countries have not built those imflustructures you are talking about? ”

I don’t see how anyone can belittle universal healthcare or universal education, or describe it as ‘benefiting personally’, when it is the entire nation that benefits. What is more, we have all seen what ‘leaving it to the market’ has done to both education and healthcare – people with money do fine, people without money do without.
