The forthcoming Chitambo Parliamentary by-election set for August 13, 2009 should provide an opportunity for the people in Central Province to vote for a candidate from an opposition political party to join Parliament. Voting for an MMD candidate will be a sheer waste of votes.
Zambians need to realize that the MMD will not bring about any meaningful socio-economic development in the country. Its leaders are all intoxicated by an unquenchable desire to maintain power at any cost by using chiefs, public resources and intimidation by the party’s leaders and hooligans.
This is one reason why the party has failed to address the people’s demands for a smaller and more efficient government, free formal education without Grades 7 and 9 elimination examinations, no examination fees, merit-based scholarships for vocational training and university education, low-interest educational loans, free life-saving healthcare for all Zambians, greater and sustained food security, greater employment opportunities, lower PAYE and value-added taxes, lower interest rates, safer local communities, improved infrastructure, privatization of the public mass media, lower water charges and electricity tariffs, and a genuine effort to address the scourge of corruption.
We should, however, thank them (the MMD) for spearheading our beloved country’s transition to multi-party democracy and economic liberalization, just as we should also acknowledge the role played by UNIP in Zambia’s struggle for independence. But if we are to reap the benefits of our country’s independence, democracy and economic liberalization, we need new political players; we cannot afford to depend on some of the current crop of politicians – many of whom are clueless figureheads!
We desperately need leaders who are going to have a clear social contract with the citizenry – a contract with specific projects and programs, and a timetable when such projects and programs should be expected to take off and/or completed. Otherwise we will continue to be fed on stories of Vision 2030 and the like.[quote]
There should, of course, be no doubting the importance of sound long-term planning to our country’s future, and to the well-being of future generations. But such planning should be balanced with the needs of our generation because in the long run, to paraphrase the famous economist John Maynard Keynes, we are all going to be dead! For this reason, we need politicians who are keen on devising schedules for implementing some of our short-term and medium-term projects and programs in order to strike a balance between our needs and expectations, and the needs and expectations of future generations.
As I have always maintained, heightened and sustained socio-economic development will not come to Zambia like manna from heaven; it will need to be adequately planned for and diligently pursued. Basically, this will require a passion for radical change, and leadership with both vision and compass.
Change, as experience and observation have taught us, is a fact of life; all living things must adapt to the demands of their environments and their own stages of growth. History is full of examples of plants and animals which have become extinct because of their inability to change when it became necessary. This fact of life applies to countries as well; if they cannot change in order to align their goals, aspirations and development strategies to the dictates of local, national, regional, and global socio-economic conditions, therefore, they are not likely succeed in improving their people’s standards of living. And our country is no exception!
But in spite of this obvious fact of life, we are all generally and naturally resistant to change. This is perhaps one of the reasons why we have tended to lend a receptive ear to the rehearsed warning by the MMD that we should not experiment with leadership – a warning we will soon start hearing as we get closer to the 2011 general elections.

Nice sound bites, BUT to do this, government must raise revenue. A smaller govt is a good idea but it means unemployment for many, so it contradicts greater employment opportunities. Lower interest rates is a monetary policy issue. Since the Nobel Prize winning Economist Friedman’s monetarism, Central Banks must control money supply to control inflation. Water and electricity tariffs cannot be lowered when there is a monoploy. This sector must be privatised.
Zambians, one thing should be clear to you all that MMD will not develop zambia. That’s why they should not be given another chance. You can’t judge the opposition now. Let them be in power and see how they run the country. You don’t judge the book by it’s cover. Where MMD is concerned, we know them by now. From the very beginning, the way UPND was organised created a great potential for serious regional problems and contradictions.political support that runs more or less on the basis of one’s tribe or region has a lot of inherent problems. You cannot create a strong political organisation on such a formula. No durable or long lasting unity can be constructed or carved out of such type of political alliance. This is because unity built on this type of formula has no depth, it has no roots. All that it needs is for one opportunist to descend on it and attempt to exploit it and all is in flames or tatters.

This is the first time I’m hearing about Henry Kyambalesa and I must say that I’m quite impressed with his remarkable analogy. I’m also surprised (or why should I, since it often happens on LT?) that such an open and honest article is being met with sarcasm by some bloggers. Sometimes I really wonder whether we Africans want to open our eyes and excel in life because if we really did, then we wouldn’t care where the eye-openning words of wisdom are coming from.

To me, it appears like there is someone in the MMD who is close to Mr President but does not like him and ultimately causes Mr President to fumble in his interviews. This failure to speak truth is bringing us all Zambians into a question and the best you and I can do for Mr President is to help him come to the right path.
This is because he holds keys to the most powerful position that our Nation offers and hence his words carry a lot to Zambians and the outsiders who are keen onlookers at how we carry ourselves.

Not surprising that SC has shreded Kyasumbalesa with consistency and theoretical arguments watering down any room for damage control.I presume this guy has years of political activism with high value commitment. I would really love to meet SC live. If only as opposition we had such savvy political firebrands in the camp on and offline, MMD would have been long gone. He will go to any length to gain power. If it means becoming s–t—u–pi–d to become head of state, he will do it. If he thinks being a fool will earn him power, he becomes a fool. This man has no boundaries.
His history is there for all to see. Under Dr Kenneth Kaunda, he was chief vigilante and was one of those who contributed to making Dr Kaunda unpopular at the time.
Many of our people who worked in the markets will remember exactly what Sata did. When Frederick Chiluba came to power, Sata yet again took a centre stage and this time became a chief kaponya. Anybody who needed harassment was dealt with by the machinery he controlled as national secretary for MMD.
Surely, our memories are not that short. Zambians know this man. No one should be fooled. The Sata who today wants to defend Chiluba was one of those who were key in misleading him. When the whole nation was saying no to dictatorial tendencies and Chiluba’s shameful attempt to impose himself as a life president, Sata – behaving like an evil snake – continued to mislead Chiluba.
He worked tirelessly to purge the MMD of anybody who opposed that well-known evil scheme – the third term. We are not surprised that under the sponsorship of the plunderers, Sata is at it again – attempting to gain power which he will use to defend the plunderers.
His apparent U-turn on this subject cannot fool us. It goes to prove everything we have been saying. This man has no principles. It is the same mouth that only yesterday was promising to defend Chiluba that is today saying he will not defend him and his fellow plunderers. Why?

Nationalist, I agree with your views on Sata. None of us wants Sata as an alternative to the failed leadership of Nyamasoya. What we want is a team of well meaning citizens, equipped with the tools to analyse and implement solutions that will deliver Zambia out of poverty. We do not want rhetoric from the likes of Mulongoti and his Tetamashi or whetevr the long name is but want people who can explain their vision like the late Andy Mazoka and can define what the problem is and what possible solutions exist. I cannot believe that you can attack his “person” so viciously without devoting a single line to question his thinking about the MMD and the future of your country. And the concept of change has been articulated by millions of authors on Management. Henry Mayo and Elton Mayo never wrote on this subject. Give me one publication and a page number by any of the two authors you have mentioned on the subject of change.
