The opposition United National Independence Party -UNIP- intends to change its name to United National Integrated Party.
This is contained in resolutions of the just ended UNIP National Leadership meeting held in Lusaka.
The meeting observed that there is need to change the name of the party taking into account the many changes that have taken place in the country.
The Meeting recommended to the National Congress of the Party to ensure that the change is effected as soon as possible.
The meeting also ratified the decision of its central committee to endorse the candidature of Acting President, Rupiah Banda, in the October 30 presidential election.
And Acting UNIP Deputy Secretary General, Reverend Alfred Banda, said the meeting also proposed to the government to declare first Republican President, Kenneth Kaunda’s birthday a public holiday.
He said this is because Dr. Kaunda is the father of the nation.

The UNIP leadership must know that it is not just the question of changing a name that is at stake but a complete overhaul of the whole structure. Its very sad to see the once ruling party going down drain with disperation. What UNIP did was great during their 27 years in terms of infrastructure development. Schools, colleges,Universities. At independence Zambia had about 100 university graduate. To Develope the country to where then Zambia was required to push this number of educated people above 15,000. So free education to have teachers and doctors was a must. The University of Zambia,Unzando, with a lot of colledges offering teaching,nursing, agric,tourism were established.
The economy though fragile supported the building of the Tazara,Tazama, and more than 300 parastal companies, several thousands housing units. continued…..

Tragic development! SMK must be turning in his grave.
It is called rebranding. They need to revisit their motto and re-orient the issues the party seeks to pursue in a post-independent Zambia. We saw UNIP’s successful policies soon after independence upto about 1985. Their manifesto worked wonders but with the inevitable changes world wide, UNIP’s approach was unworkable and therefore unsustainable. Now they need to rethink their strategy and hopefully, one day they can be back in power. MMD out of govt will be gone, PF is hopeless temporal and may be UPND may survive for long. So it just makes sense for UNIP to start thinking of rebranding itself. A mere substitution of the word Independence will not work.
