MMD Presidential Candidate, Rupiah Banda, has been sworn in as Zambia’s fourth Republican President.
Mr. Banda took oath before Chief Justice Ernest Sakala at a colorful ceremony held at the parliament buildings in Lusaka on Sunday afternoon.
The swearing in ceremony was also attended by foreign dignitaries, who included presidents Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, Malawi’s Mbingu Wamutharika and Kgalema Motlanthe of South Africa.
Former presidents, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda and Dr. Frederick Chiluba were also part of the several guests that attended the ceremony.
MMD supporters clad in their party colours sung and danced to celebrate their victory in an election which
was tightly contested.
And in his inaugural speech, Mr. Banda called for unity in the country and extended an olive branch to losing candidates, especially Patriotic Front leader, Michael Sata.
Mr. Sata has rejected the results of the election claiming the poll was flawed.
Mr. Banda stressed the need for unity after Thursday’s presidential election, saying he does not want to govern a divided nation.
He said the election should unite the Country for the common good of citizens.
In his speech, has pledged to fight poverty and transform Zambia into a middle income nation.
President Banda who spoke shortly after he took oath as Zambia’s fourth President, observed that many Zambians have been excluded in the sharing the Country’s economic prosperity.
He described poverty as demeaning and an unnecessary evil.
The president said he is determined to empower Zambians through education and employment creation during his reign.
President Banda also pledged to transform Zambia into the hub of Southern Africa.
He further stated that he will continue the fight against corruption and observe the rule of law.

Another thing I noticed is this. At the time the presidential morcade was going to parliament I was at Manda Hill Shopping Complex there were so many people around who had gone for shopping but paid no attention to this new president who was passing. Instead people who wanted to drive out Manda Hill area ran out of patience at the police man who stopped them to allow RB and group to pass and started hooting in anoyance.
So RB will need to work hard for people surrounding him to accept him genuinely after rejecting him through the vote, I mean the people living here in Lusaka.

The opposition will never come to power unless the MMD ( 1) becomes seriously divided (which is unlikely at the moment); (2) we only have one opposition leader standing against MMD candidate (again this unlikely for instance Miyanda is already saying he will stand in 2011). The mood right now in Lusaka and perhaps other areas is that of frustration, some people are even saying they will never vote in future.
If 2011 was tomorrow I would not vote again, but thank God I easily accept things like this.

I think it is just standard policy to invite the leaders of neighbouring countries to witness the swearing in of a new president. As regards the results, I think what we have is the best. Peace continues, everyone knows what MMD is about, no surprises. If Sata was president, everyone would be apprehensive right now. @142-the government of national unity that you advocate is not working well at all in Zimbabwe- the guys over there are caught in a deadlock, failing to decide who runs what. I doubt that African politics is mature enough to form unity governments, especially when leaders cannot agree on anything. Moreover, such coalitions run the risk of undermining the concept of ‘checks and balances’ by swallowing up any opposition to an incumbent government. What we need is just ONE effective opposition party to run against the MMD, which would entail either Sata or HH, hopefully the former, to step down and allow the other to gain a stronger platform by recruiting respected figures from other tribes

If our politics were based on ideologies, it would be easy to have two major political parties like in USA and UK. Our political parties are not based on ideological differences. 165, May I contribute to your line of questioning. I think the fact that there has been no Convention in PF, even to just endorse Sata, means there might be a leadership vacuum in the party. Look at what happened to MMD…they had a dead President, no Vice President and relied on RB- an outside who they quickly called Trustee and now he is there as Head of State. In fact, going back to Chiluba’s time, he did not groom a leader in MMD, hence he had the task of seeking Levy in the night. I see PF heading this way. Age will catch up with Sata in 2011 and it will no longer be feasible to rely on his physical strength. There is a problem.

Just to add the above debate on the opposition merging – I think it is mandatory that PF and UPND rethink their candidates. We can advise both parties to unite, but how can we realistically expect them to work together when Sata does not accord HH any respect, and both of them advocate different policies? In order for PF to wield mass support, they need to elect a more educated, tempered, predictable, and reasoned government. The populist, socialist policies that Sata advocates gain wide support in urban areas, but we need leaders who understand how Zambia need to economically thrive in an increasingly globalised world. Otherwise we’ll end up in the same situation as Zim, Cuba etc.

Although the rural vote is worryingly disregarded by many bloggers, it still counts, and at least rural dwellers exercised their civic duty to vote. If people wanted Sata, they should have gone home to vote – that’s your only way to influence the outcome of an election. To add to my last comment, it is my understanding that Sata walked out of talks with HH. Even though people are blaming them for failing to unite, I really don’t see how they could have done so considering that they don’t agree on many issues, and Sata has no respect for HH. This is the reason why I thought it was rather doubtful that Obama could pick Clinton as a running mate.

Actually I think 1% difference is good for democracy. it shows the opposition is strong. This is good especially if campainging is based on issues. Landslide victory may indicate that opposition is weak, unless it is like 1991 when people overwhemingly wanted change from UNIP’s socialist policies which caused shortages of every essential goods. a strong opposition keeps govt on toes and makes sure they don’t get away with murder. @Shimaster – how are we to tackle tribalism and division between the people of ONE nation by implementing that policy? Although your suggestion appears to have some advantages, I think Zambia just need a leader with a non-partisan, non-tribal appeal – like Obama in the US. He now has many republicans and independents voting for him, simply because he espouses an approach that considers and prioritises issues important to everyone, regardless of political affiliation. Whether Bemba, Tonga, Lozi, or any other tribe, us Zambians are facing the same problems. Let us advocate a reconciliatory approach before a federal/ regional one.

#295 I think RB will not go beyond 2011. MMd have a lot of younger people who will rise to the challenge. If RB can be president, anyone out there can be. RB rode on the power of MMd and Govt, this means anyone on MMd can win. RB was not the best they could offer, only that he was sitting VP and acting president. He probably got the fewest votes they could get. Mutati, Katele and other younger guys could have got MMD more votes for the same investment.

Although tribalism exists, I think it is exaggerated greatly by the fact that no one candidate has managed to appeal to a wide spectrum of Zambians. In 2001, Mazoka managed to gain greater nation-wide support than HH. If tribalism were the be-all-and-end-all, we would have had less voter apathy as people rushed to the polls to vote for their tribesman. The truth is, most Zambians are apathetic to all candidates, even those of their own tribes. Moreover, as some have already pointed out, rural dwellers voted for MMD because of albeit small developments in their areas

I have analysed the election results by constituency and I can prove beyond doubt that Bembas are more tribalist than they claim to be. Just look at the number of voters that voted for HH in Luapula and Northen and compare that with the number of voters who voted for Sata in Southern Province as percentages of the total. Analyse the percentages with the voting patterns in other provinces. It is clear that Bembas were influenced by tribal feelings, simply put: majority of Bembas hate tongas.
This should end the tribal tag given to tongas because the opposite is the truth. The facts are there for all to see, so please stop pretending!!!

I will join you in campaigning for HH. From my sources in Zambia, a number of urban HH supporters switched to Sata at the last minute after being misled by oppinion polls indicating that Sata was leading because they wanted change. Others got discouraged altogether and stayed home. There were others who were worried that if HH wins only tongas will be apointed as ministers. HH has to start appearing at campaigns with prominent supporters from other provinces(he has a lot of creditable members from all areas in Zed). He should learn from RB’s tactic of appearing with a strong team from all corners of Zambia. That will help remove the tribal tag.

I am happy that the election was in the end a peaceful exercise. I am disappointed to hear a prominent opposition figure describe the election as “rigged”. I would also like to take issue with the continued implication by spectator and politician alike that a Mr VJ Mwaanga is capable of single handedly rigging elections back to back in the incumbent’s favor. If He is that powerful, make him President. Let’s hope the newly elected President can deliver on his promise of continuity on the work done by the late President.

I’m assuming that all the people who contribute to this blog site are of a mature age. At least the age of 18, in which case if you were back home…you would be eligible to cast a vote of your choice. My worry, however, is that judging by the content of the blogs posted here the majority of the population eligible to vote are not educated, rational or mature enough to take the time to think seriously about why they are voting for who they are voting for.

Merger of PF and UPND is like mixing oil and water. Merger of MMD and PF is more feasible since PF is a splinter group of MMD. However, this can make UPND stronger!! I told you that failure of the Pact due to tribal differences will not help the zambia. The country is clearly divided into 2 major camps: MMD and PF. Why can’t RB consider making SATA his VP and the PF as part of his government? Surely this would be a better reflection of the election results.
Except where the winning candidate has a landslide victory of say 60% or higher, I think the electoral laws should be amended so that the 2 top positions are automatically filled by the top 2 winners(Effectively having a government of national unity).

I like HH’s performance in the elections. He did not have backing from other parties like MMD and PF but managed to get the vote of many Zambians. HH has a lot of potential, being young and still energitic. Now, what HH must do is to revise his campaign strategy. Over promissing is not an advantage to the Zambians because they have been cheated to long so they would rather have more reasonanble promisses for them to believe. Let also HH begin to tell people that they need to be hardworking; nobody promisses that he would cause Zambians to be hardworking and priority oriented. In fact if allegations against him were taken serious, the London judgment was enough to see FTJ in jail. The task force confiscated properties from plunderers but failed to find enough evidence to jail them, it doesn’t make sense. Now, as a zambian who unfortunately couldnt vote becoz I was not in zambia in 2006 hence Im unregistered, I nevertheless took a keen interest in this election’s results. I stayed up all night on fri and sat tallied the votes on my laptop. I then compared the votes with the 2006 votes, and you know what, the trends are the same. This should have been the starting point for PF and other parties. They should have canvassed their weak spots instead of being paraded in the POST at mammoth rallies of pipo who aint voters. MMD won becoz they managed to get decent votes in PF stronghold. PF lost becoz they faired poorly in MMD areas. UPND did well in MMD areas

Guys, You are very simplistic about the whole election process in Zambia. The PF are challenging the results on some very solid grounds(I happen to know some of the facts here, but will not not discuss these here as that may prejudice the court hearing that is expected). You have prejudged President Sata and the PF before you have had chance to examine their evidence on which they are basing their claim, as will be presented to the courts. It is the prerequisite of every Zambian to take legal action and seek redress through the courts, as the PF are doing. Now, for the ‘low voter turn out’ I would like to think that the the electorate had their confidency in the process erroded. This is because the opposition told the public that the elections were going to be rigged. I run a multi-million £ business group, which I am wanting to move (part of) to Zambia. But, I now have to wait and see how your MMD chaps get on. The investment policies have been a disaster, allowing foreign investors (especially Chinese) to bring in any labour and take out as much earnings as they want! Did anyone raise any query on this thing or it is only coming to light now? Can you give any one example of this where it occurred? If for once we stop looking at Zambian politics from a tribal point of view, it is easy to classify Zambian voters the American way. The Tongas are like typical conservatives or Republicans. They are wealthy generators and more likely to support Capitalist ideas. The Bembas are typical Socialists or Democrats. They are blue collar workers who populate most Urban areas and are most likely to support Socialist ideas. These two groups are always on the opposite end of the political spectrum. They can not mix. That explains why a PF UPND alliance can not work. Traditionally the two groups have been battling for power from independence days…ever heard of UPP and ANC, it was the same.

I would like to believe that ECZ knew by plan that by Sunday ie 48-60 hrs, they will have enough results to call the final winner. He even wanted to force a 3rd term of all these things on us, and then left the party when Levy implemented better fiscal management, and tried to fight corruption. Why do people ignore these things?
People, are you not reading the comments that came ahead of your’s? The issues you bring up have been discussed already. Thandiwe is NOT a child, Sata, with under 700, 000 of the national vote would still not have been a leader supported by the majority, and if you look at the combined votes of HH and Sata, MMD would not have won – why claim rigging when it is clear to you the opposition were divided, especially when you did not go home to vote? How do you expect your preferred candidate to come into power if the majority of his supporters (in only 4 provinces), did not go to the polling booth?
Even if they cry like them, Sata and PF are not cry babies. I think RB should now concentrate on serious business. Forget about constable Sata. He needs to call on all his expertise, experience and knowledge to steer Zambia ahead. But the Post must pay for its sins otherwise we are setting a dangerous precedent that they have license to abuse anyone they wish to. This is not freedom of the press but abuse of the very freedom.
@834, you’re right. They have to go back to conducting themselves ethically if they are to gain back any credibility and respect. Their play on partisanship and populist rhetoric did Zambians a great disservice. PF supporters, instead of complaining about a failed election, why not advise Sata to contribute to the country through the current administration? I’m sure he’ll be welcomed back, and we all know he has the ability to get things done. KK mentioned that he would make a good minister, not president. If he is truly interested in improving our country, I don’t think anyone is stopping him from doing so through the government.

@841 – judging by the results of this election, do you want a 50+1 system in place in order to have a coalition government e.g. PF + MMD? Although it sounds good on paper, is Zambia politically mature for such a system? If we had it now, the country would have undergone a runoff between PF and MMD. The whole process is very expensive for the country, especially considering that the majority of Zambians did not vote. So whoever won would not in any way form a government representing the majority. I very much doubt most of HH’s supporters in Southern Province would bother to vote all over again for candidates they didn’t want. We already have worrying voter apathy in the country.
With the 50+1 in place, PF would obviously lose. The UPND vote without a PF/UPND pact will fall to MMD. You can see this from the last two elections. PF advisors are thick in the head, no brains to see such plain facts.

Recent history should remind us of the man who instigated 3rd term. He kept schtium when people plundered. Carlington, ZCCM. Why didn’t Hon. Sata make noise then? RB is being corrupt? What did he do/Was he ever taken to court on corruption charges? No, give the man a chance, he’s done well to carry us through our hardest times when LPM died. Mr. Sata was there for 10 years, he turned a blind eye to all the theft. RB has not even started a 3 year job and people want to shoot him down. Give him a chance like you did with Levy. If RB was such a bad person, why did he use football as a means to empower young boys and give them a chance to end their poverty?
@En – well said. At least LPM even resigned from the MMD on allegations of corruption, and made an effort to change things when he got into power. PF supporters, if your leader truly is interested in improving things for Zambia, advise him to swallow his pride and join the ruling party in order to implement some of the policies he has in mind and gain first-hand knowledge about what it takes to steer our economy forward. In this day and age, going about things like Mugabe will only make things worse for our county as a whole – open your eyes and look South – you will not get a better example of what can happen to a country ruled by a socialist, thuggish approach.
