Health experts from various districts in Southern province are meeting in Choma to devise measures aimed at preventing and controlling any possible cholera outbreak in the region.
The experts, who are strategizing on how to conquer cholera and strengthening public health in the province, are drawn from the Ministry of Health, local authorities and the Zambia Sugar Company.
Provincial chief Environmental Health Officer, Emmanuel Kooma, told ZANIS in Choma today that the meeting is expected to come up with several strategies that will help prevent and control possible outbreaks of cholera.
He said the Ministry of Health is determined to curb any outbreak of cholera in the Southern province through measures that would be instituted.
Mr. Kooma said deliberations will also focus on actions to trace the source of the disease in the districts that are prone to cholera outbreaks.
He said among the envisaged strategies being deliberated is the formation of structures at community levels that will be specifically mandated to monitor the diarrhoea pattern and immediately draw the attention of the Ministry of Health.
Mr. Kooma said the Ministry of Health intends to hold meetings with chiefs and their headmen in various districts on the prevention and control of the water borne disease.
The health experts will also be expected to carry out sensitization campaigns among church and civic leaders as well as teachers.
Mr. Kooma said rural health staff will be tasked to carry out sanitation inspections through a door to door campaign.
He said the Southern province needs to step up measures to prevent the spread of the water borne disease, especially that the region borders Zimbabwe were there is severe cholera outbreak.

The ministry of health and all parties involved in this exercise should be commended. Its good that we are hearing of a proactive rather than reactive response to the threat posed by cholera.

The source is already known as in it being the MMD GRZ’s failure to provide safe water and proper waste collection management. However, door-to-door campaign will certainly help in controlling this mess.

Maestro, SP are not really being pro-active as you put it, The Ministry & Govt have already done so late last week, when they sent officials to Zim towns along the zambian border, thus the meeting in SP is rather a reaction than proaction, so amaano pa Zed fyani, not mu SP chabe!!

GRZ when are you going to say THANK YOU to president Hakainde Hichilema who wrote President RB Banda containing ways of improving our limping economy. It is sad to note that the Kwacha currency rate to the US Dollar has now surpassed or is about to where former President Chiluba left it with us in 2011.
Let us learn to say thank you any help that comes our way. After all, the MMD GRZ is the one that requested for help from the opposition with solutions to the Global/National Financial Crises that we are facing as Zambians and Zambia.

The zambian government through MOH should empower health inspectors to show their true colours.Countries that have used this cadre to the fullest are rated number one in improving the life expectancy of its people.For example sychelles,South Africa and other european countries.Clinicians shoud embark on case management and not meddling here and there because of global fund.

I Would like to congratulate mr kooma for the work he is putting in Southern Province.The force he has for public health is very good.His inspectors in choma have followed and are using the district adminstration to enforce public health.This man is a known driver who also improved the health staus of sinazongwe community for agood number of years.Well educated chap. your masters has shown the way.i hope to emulate you. bravo Mr public health-cholera man
yes yes health inspectors lets play a big role in cholela prevention. we have the law in our hands. lets inforce it to the later. all the those contributing to cholera causing nuisances should be visited by the law.
