Hunger hits Petauke district

Share

A traditional ruler in Petauke has said a number of people in the district are going out without food.

Senior chief Kalindawalo Mndikula chitete told ZANIS in an interview yesterday that most Petauke residents including his subjects, were hungry adding that the situation on the ground was bad.

The Senior chief said people were surviving on pumpkin leaves adding that the few with maize were managing on a meal per day.

He attributed the hunger situation in most parts of Petauke to last year’s uneven rain pattern.

He has since appealed to Government to come to the rescue of the people adding that the situation now was in the emergence stage.

Meanwhile Petauke district Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit committee ( PDDMMUC) has reported receipt of one hundred metric tones of maize to distribution as relief food.

Petauke district commissioner David Tembo, who is also the PDDMMUC chairman said the unit had received maize to add to the first consignment of hundred metric tones which had since been distributed to all three constituencies.

He said the latest consignment was to also be distributed to the three constituencies but bearing in mind those who did not benefit from the earlier consignment.

Last year the agriculture department in Petauke indicate that thirty percent of people in the district would be hit with hunger by the end of September 2008.

  2. Easterners voted for Rupiah Band Limited on the basis of tribalism, now let him save them. we need quality leadership to help drive development and so alleviate hunger and oppression deriving from poverty and ignorance… Hunger is in Zambia is not as a result of a global financial crunch!!! Hapana!!! It is caused by poor leadership and selfishness!!!

  3. Whats is nyama soya doing…he ate all their food when he went to Mfuwe. Nyama soya…your selfish voters are dying. Tell sweet sixteen to send chicken, sugar unga for them OR are you still waiting for 2011 elections????? =d>=d>=d>

  8. #22, tell them. Sata keeps lying about things he can never do Just trust RB for now and zambia shall be fine. Sata wabufi fye. Forget him as he is mentally, physically, psychologically, ideologiically and politically expired.

  11. The first Performance appraisal on this Govt by the Zambian people will be held on 1st Feb 09 based on the 3 months probation period.The second performance appraisal will be held 1st May 09 based on the 6 months probation period afterwhich the Zambian people will decide based on the outcome whether to ask them to resign honourably or if the performance is positive then a yearly performance appraisal will be conducted on 1st November of each year until the elections in 2011.This will apply to every Govt that will ever rule Zambia.LT please come up with topics relevant to these assessments on the due date to give an opportunity to Zambians to fairly & objectively assess the Govt.

  12. This nambala 1, 2,3 business is diminishing the seriousness of this blog. Why can’t we contribute to the specifics of the news article. Some of us do not live in Zambia and depend on such mediums for information and analysis of happenings back home. Seriously what do we learn from hearing people announcing they were number one. Let us bring back seriousness to public discourse.

  13. Again this thing of hunger? The other day we had Kabompo or Kasempa and now Petauke (my home village)!
    Have your bloggers noticed that people in Zambia have adopted a beggar’s stance. When there is hunger the local leadership (Chiefs and local govt officials) ask for food relief (read: handouts). I thought these guys (local leadership) are there to solve such problems? That they have to conduct agriculture in such a way that there are NO food shortages in the following year?:-w

  15. QUESTION TO EVERYONE: WHY DOES ZAMBIA NEED FOREIGN INVESTORS AT ALL?

    * To “bring money”

    But we have massive reserves, against which the government can borrow for actual production and development. The government can even print money itself. So why do we need foreign investors to ‘bring money’?

    * To bring technology

    But we have unemployed UNZA graduates and we could send them abroad to study, like the Japanese did. That is how they turned Demming’s quality control methods into Kaizen.

    So why are foreign investors so necessary, that we should sacrifice the mines to them?

  16. #30, A mbewe,
    pay your home village a visit to see for your self..

    On the brighter side there is a radio station called pashima in petauke…
    Very entertaining and knowledgeable. That’s some progress…. =d>=d>=d>=d>=d>=d>=d>

  17. Matworld,we’re here,thanx fo yo concern.don’t worry about hunger in the east,we shall receive sugar very soon,hahahahahaha.as fo some characters who are being tribal by acusing easters of having voted on tribal basis,Matworld avail them with final results frm ECZ to check fo themselves.if anything,eastern was one of the few provinces that had a fair distribution of votes among the 3 main contenders.again for the myopic uninformed bloggers,zed has at present over 14 districts in dire need of relief food,its not just katete or eastern,chaps comment wisely.

    Finally,will be back when we’ve more interesting subjects,oh!this evening fo soccer,gogogo copper bullets.

  18. THESE EASTERNERS ATE IN ADVANCE DURING ELECTIONS.SUGAR DADDY NOW NOWHERE NEAR THEM.WE TOLD THEM NOT TO VOTE FOR NYAMA SOYA BUT BECAUSE THEY WERE GIVEN SUGAR,SALT AND MEALI MEAL THAT TIME,THEY DID NOT HEED OUR ADVISE.WE SHALL WAIT AND SEE MAYBE SUGAR DADDY IS ON HIS WAY FOR ANOTHER DONATION.BUT KNOWING THESE PIPO,HE WILL ONLY GO THERE TO DONATE IN 2011,TRUST ME ON THIS.

  19. Not Easterners received sugar etc from Banda, and not Easterners voted for this loser. This is my home village sad indeed sad for all Zambians living in poverty.

  20. People from eastern are fake ,let them die with hunger,who cares.Zambia can do well and be a better place to live in without these fake and narrow minded people i call mbuyas.
