Govt. urges church to be a place of solace for the poor

Government has called on the Church to be a place of solace where the afflicted and poor can take refuge.

Community and Social Development Deputy Minister, Nicholas Banda said this in
Lusaka today during the fundraising luncheon held at Presbyterian Church in
Chilenje.

Mr. Banda regretted that some church members have resorted to engaging themselves in
anti-social vices such as child abuse, drug trafficking, divorce and wife battering.

And Mr. Banda has urged the church to assist Government address the issue of street
children by building more community schools and orphanages, where vulnerable
children could be accommodated.

He challenged the community and the church to provide material and spiritual support
to the orphans and the vulnerable to help them grow into responsible citizens.

Speaking earlier, Pastor Justine Phiri, said the church has a religious
responsibility towards the orphans and the vulnerable in the society hence the
fundraising activities aimed at raising funds for a construction of a community
school.

“He said the Church is build on the basis of faith and faith without work is dead “,
he said.
