A critical shortage of essential drugs has hit rural health centres in Malambo valley of Lundazi district, forcing patients to resort to using traditional herbs when they are ill.
Chief Mwanya of Malambo valley told ZANIS in Lundazi district that drugs at Mwanya,
Chasera and Mkasanga rural health centres ran out of drugs in December last year and
no fresh supplies have been made.
The traditional ruler said the shortage of drugs has not only affected rural health
centres in his chiefdom but other chiefdoms in the valley, such as Chitungulu and
Kazembe.
He has since called on the ministry of health to replenish the finished stock.
Chief Mwanya attributed the drug shortage to floods that have caused extensive
damage to infrastructure and crops.
He also disclosed that his chiefdom has completely been cut off from the rest of
Lundazi district due to floods from Lusukuzi, Lumimba and Lukuzye rivers.
