Govt says informarion is key to development

Share

Information and Broadcasting Services Minister, MikeMulongoti, says information is a key factor in national development.

Mr. Mulongoti says the provision of information to the citizenry would empower them
to make decisions that will enhance their health and economic status.

Speaking today during a Labour Day award giving ceremony for Ministry of Information
staff at Mass Media Complex, Mr. Mulongoti prodded journalists to be proactive and
reach the masses in all corners of the country.

“We as the ministry responsible for collecting and disseminating information must be
proactive and reach the masses in corners of the country,” he said.

Mr. Mulongoti said the media is central to any developmental efforts because no
meaningful development can take place in the absence of information.

He said the award ceremony provides workers with an opportunity to reflect on each
individual worker’s performance and to identify areas that need improvement so as to
adjust and deliver service more efficiently.

Mr. Mulongoti urged the Ministry of Information staff members to execute their
duties diligently in order for the ministry to achieve its intended goals.

He further encouraged the workers to take up studies that would improve their skills
and consequently enhance their performance.

The minister saluted the recipients of the awards and challenged others to improve
their performance so that they could be considered next year.

Several workers walked away with awards ranging from Refrigerators, DVDs and other
electrical appliances.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mulongoti challenged the public media in the country to work in line
with their mandate of highlighting and explaining government programmes to the
people.

Mr. Mulongoti, who is also Chief Government spokesperson, said the public media
should move away concentrating from reporting on scandals to developmental issues in
order to effectively contribute to national economic development.

  1. Mulongoti, you must tell your MMD govt to start suppling computers to schools and other govt depts. I was astounded to learn that most of secondary schools are still using faxes and one out of twenty schools is connected to internet. Mulongoti, development in terms of info has to start from the grass root to bear its true meaning minus that everything is meaningless and besides the supply of computers must cater the entire country and not only concentrating in Lusaka, Livingstone and C/belt.Let your govt MMD make a child in Shangombo, Jumbe, Nabwalya, Chisekense to know how to use a computer.

It’s really hilarious the way Mulongoti puts it like he supplied ZNBC equipment that is still laying idle, indeed that is the true nature of MMD govt shifting blame to innocent people. Truly, a lot need to be done at ZNBC to improve the stds.

  2. Sometimes i wonder whether this MMD officials operate in an animal farm. This Mulongoti frog has advised the public media to divert from reporting scandals to developmental issues. The govt is always releasing statement on scandals. What else will the reporters report,if all the news they get are scandals.I wonder whether Mulongoti himself has ever made any developmental speech or statement or spoken any meaningful word. When he is in the press, he is reacting to the opposition politician’s statements. This Mulongonti and his party have no vision statement and the only vision for the party is to show how rampant corruption was in the previous govt. Some of these reporters too are good for nothing, why not ask Mulongoti what the Govt programmes and developmental issues are, and how the Govt is implementing them? ZNBC again is wholly independent on Govt for revenue, what vision has he got for the TV station? What is he doing to provide that information? Good for nothing Mulongoti

  3. It is so disheartening to have to listen to some of these politicians. Anytime a citizen of this great country critizes the government, they are up in arms defending themselves. We have the right to question you as our leaders. Every person, by the mere fact that has the ability to question and judge his/her environment, is a politician. The only difference is, others are actively and presently involved, while others are inactively involved but will in the future. We need people like Mulongoti to reason before they respond to anything. I wouldn’t be surprised if LPM is the one that gives this chap reactionary statements. Let us show some maturity in politics. Information is vital for development, but what kind, for who, how is it disseminated,to who and when. Timeliness of info. is an ingredient for efficiency. The nature of this info. is critical to dev. too. Put your money where your mouth is Mr Mulongoti. Politics of lip service are long gone

  4. Sometimes reading Zambian newspapers can be depressing. They only report what some useless individual is mouthing off. How that passes for news, I shall never know. If this Mulongoti chap was announcing a big policy idea, backed up by real money, then this would be news. But as it happens, he makes a meaningless speech and forgets about it – it’s business as usual. His party through the government still controls ZNBC, The Times and Daily Mail. The two newspapers are not even good enough to be used as toilet paper. The Indian government realised a long time ago that the poor people of India could only break the chains of poverty by providing them with cheap telecommunication and information technology. This investment is now paying off – the Indian economy is set to overtake that of the UK within the next 10 years! Even small countries like Singapore have been build on Information Technology. People like Mulongoti are incapable of such visionary ideas.

  5. Chiwala Sec, Kuzi-Ma Ndola, baliba giva ama computers, Even today, they are locked nomba nayakwata na dust. They are just waiting for minister to commission them, I think the minister is stuck somewhere in Kampili.
