We will not participate in Constitutional demos during SADC meeting

Share

The Newly launched  Constitution Referendum Alliance says it will not support calls by some  Non Governmental Organisations to hold protests over the Government constitutional roadmap during the forthcoming SADC Heads of state and Government summit in Lusaka next month.

Constitution Referendum Alliance member Muyunda Ililonga said it would be premature
to hold protests over the mode of adopting the Constitution when Government and
other Stakeholders were still exploring ways of of how to resolve the issue.

Mr Ililonga who is also Zambia Consumer Association of Zambia (ZACA)  President said
the issue of adopting a new Constitution was a National matter which NGO’s should
not expose to foreign states.

Mr Ililonga who was speaking during the launch of the Alliance at Kitwe’s Edinburgh
Hotel today, said the voice of reason must prevail among the members of the non
governmental organisations opposed to the government mode of adopting the new
constitution.

And Speaking earlier at the same function, Constitution Alliance Coordinator Peter
Sinkamba   appealed to Government to abandon its roadmap of adopting the
constitution through the Constituenal Conference as it was an undemocratic way of
enacting the  Constitution.

Mr Sinkamba who is also Citizens for a Better Environment  (CBE) Executive Director
said the route of adopting the Constitution that Government had taken was
undemocratic as it would not allow the Zambian people to have an input in the
adoption of the new constitution.

He said his organisation believed that the only way of adopting the constitution was
to go through the Referendum as all Zambians would have an opportunity to
participate in the exercise.

Mr Sinkamba disclosed that the Alliance would visit schools and Institutions of
higher learning so that they could petition Government on its decision to enact the
Constitution through the Constitutional Conference.

  1. NGO’s in zambia are more than a joke!! If it weren’t funny, I’d probably cry. They seem to be launched daily. Can’t blame them, they are actually smart – coz once registered, they are obliged to attend meetings in the guise of stakeholders, thus entitled to goodies that are given to all involved in the procedures, so I take it they could also be in line for computers from ZCID etc! This has got me thinking, I might just register “The Citizens abroad forum!” Obviously I’ll have to be presidente!!!

We do indeed have a problem!!!

  2. #1 bauze, i guess you are right. Some NGO’s do not even believe in themselves eg.Victory Ministries,Dunamis etc.
Bauze if you form an NGO, i’ll also form one, and i’ll name it UNPATRIOTIC BEHIND ZAMBIA (UBZ)

  3. it is time to know those hiding in the name of NGOs. Constitution referendum alliance is a joke and being used by those who want to hijack the all process through time wasting and manipulation. Ililonga is a total failure and a disgrace who has failed is organisation the ZACA. How can he delivery the best outcome of the expectations of the pipo of Zed? This guy was my school mate who never had qualities of being a leader or good listerner at all! The mushrooming of this type of organisations like(CRA)is a complete sign of a failed constitution making process. Many of you will call me names but the words of old become sweeter afterwards. It seems clearly power is becoming sweeter before the ordinary pipo. Some of these organisations will be family orientated with no cleae vision. This is the time when civilised men and women are suppose to come together with one strong voice that we want a new constitution that as to be inclusive, gender, and total participation of every zeds.

  5. Thats all that Zambians are good at. Endless talk shops with no articulated mission. This is turning into an annoying circus as if enacting (or whatever the legal term) a constitution is rocket science.

  7. CLINTON VISITS ZAMBIA

FORMER United States president Bill Clinton arrives in Zambia this afternoon on an eight-day global tour to oversee projects under his Clinton Foundation. The eight-day tour began on Tuesday when he visited HIV-positive Dominican children in a hospital funded by the Clinton Foundation. The trip is taking Clinton to four African countries; Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania and South Africa.Clinton’s trip follows a US$1.25 million grant from the Estee Lauder-owned MAC cosmetics company to the Clinton Foundation to battle AIDS in the Caribbean, which has the second-highest infection rate in the world behind sub-Saharan Africa.Tomorrow, Clinton is scheduled to attend a youth outreach soccer tournament hosted by Zambian local leaders to appeal to young people about the importance of HIV testing.Clinton is also scheduled to visit a pharmaceutical distribution centre in Lusaka. He is expected to leave Zambia for Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, on Sunday before returning to the United Stat

  8. cont…returning to the United States on Tuesday. His first stop in Africa was Johannesburg on Wednesday, where he met President Thabo Mbeki and addressed the Nelson Mandela Foundation. He later met with Johannesburg city officials who are implementing the Clinton Climate Initiative’s Energy Efficiency Building Retrofit Programme. This morning, Clinton leaves South Africa for Malawi, where he will hold a 30-minute closed-door meeting with President Bingu Wa Mutharika in Lilongwe before flying by helicopter to the southern district of Neno.He will later this afternoon arrive in Zambia.Soon after leaving office, Clinton 61, and the first Democratic President since Delano Roosevelt to win a second term of office, founded the Clinton Foundation. The main mission of the foundation is to strengthen the capacity of people in the US and throughout the world to meet the challenges of global interdependence. This is Clinton’s second visit to Africa in the past one year.

  9. #10 The law is weak, the meaning of NGO is being misapplied , these guys are supposed to partner with govt in poverty eradiction, look at the proper NGO-Carter center, Clinton foundation,Children Concern,Heart foundation, they dont align themselves with politics but are there to patch up where govt has failed. You see African politics stink,FTJ funded those Afred Zulu ,and another stupid guy to just spear head 3rd choruses, and no doubt these *****s are being funded by MMD

  10. It’s only in Zambia were NGOs actively participate in politics. Elsewhere, NGOs are partners in development, reaching areas where the government may not adequately ‘cover’. The key word here is actively – commenting on people’s plight in line with the objectives of the NGO is not being politically active. What is missing in our country is civil liberty organizations whose focus is to lobby government on political issues. These are registered and recognised as civil rights movement and are clearly distinct from NGOs. Proper legislation should be enacted to regulate NGOs – not punitive legislation – and should clearly distinguish between NGOs and Civil Liberty movements. This will help put petty NGOs in their rightful place – helping people.
#11 has given some best examples of NGOs. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), National Action Network of Rev. Al Sharpton are some examples of Civil Rights organisations with a clear political motive. Let us not confuse the two!

  11. NGO BILL PRESENTED TO PARLIAMENT
From Times of Zambia-JUSTICE Minister, George Kunda, yesterday presented to Parliament the non-governmental organisation (NGO) Bill that seeks to enhance transparency and accountability among such organisations. The Bill provides for the coordination and registration of NGOs, establishment the NGOs board and the Zambia Congress of Non-Government Organisations.“Mr Speaker, I am a bearer of the message from the President to present the Non Governmental Organisation Bill,” Mr Kunda said.Under this law, an NGO shall be deemed to be established in Zambia although it is organised and has its headquarters or chief place of business outside Zambia. It would also be deemed to be established in Zambia if any of its office-bearers or members reside in Zambia or are presented therein, or if any person in Zambia manages or assists in the management of such organisation or solicits or collects money or subscription on its behalf. On the other hand, the NGO would not be deemed to be established in Zambia if it is organised and operating outside Zambia and has no office or place of business. The particular NGO could be suspended if it fails to submit the quarterly or annual reports or accounts or returns, or the officers or members of the NGO misappropriate or misapply the funds. The deputy chairperson for parliamentary committees Mkhondo Lungu referred the Bill to the committee on estimates and said members of Parliament (MPs) should make their submission before August 3.

  12. I feel for the genuine NGO’s who go about their business with integrity and sense of purpose whilst adopting a non-partisan resolve. The quack NGO’s are giving them all as a collective, a very bad name.George Kunda, we want NGO’s, as a pre-requisite for registration renewal,to publish in at least TWO national papers their source and application of their funding.Submission of audited accounts is a must to ensure transparency and accountability…..NGO’s without hidden agendas should have no problem with this..after all they are established to benefit the needy and the disadvantaged.Lobby or pressure groups, political or otherwise, such as the Oasis Forum, should also begin to operate within a similar legal framework.

  14. Mr sinkamba constitution alliance coordinator can you plese try to be articlate and despell the arsetion by the gov that parliament will not give up its legislative powers? There several bottlenecks that needs to be strightten out if we have to go the CA way CC seens to be fine as long as we find some fundamental point of refferences that that we want to include inthe ca that we should not depart from in cc.Lets not give empty rhetorics so that we make a career from this proccess. Some of u so called Ngos are building a cv for MPship we know that.To say its undemocratic is shallow you have to put some meat on the bones.
