Movement Beginning of Catholic Church Reformation?

Share

AFTER what they described as years of soul searching, reflection, anguish and intimidation some married priests in Zambia mainly from the Catholic Church have decided to come out in the open and begin conducting mass under the auspices of the Movement for Married Priests.

The Movement founded by excommunicated Catholic Archbishop Emmanuel Milingo was launched last September amidst fears that it would establish a new sect in Africa funded by Reverend Sun Myung Moon as a rival to Roman Catholicism.

The Movement for Married Priests Now- Zambia Chapter had a rally last weekend to mark the commencement of its activities in Zambia with a call to all priests that have married secretly to come out in the open and renounce priesthood celibacy.

Father Anzanga Mbewe a married priest who was ordained to priesthood by late Ndola Catholic Bishop De Jong defied a longstanding tradition of celibacy in the Roman Catholic Church with his colleagues and are now open disciples of Milingo.

Though one will not hear a great deal about married Roman Catholic priests the truth is that they do exist. Some estimates place their number at around 20 per cent of all Roman Catholic priests in the world. This would mean that 20 per cent of all Roman Catholic priests are officially and legally married, even though celibacy continues to be a requirement.

Father Mbewe believes that married priests in the movement are part of the Roman Catholic Church and continue to acknowledge the existing leadership in the Catholic Church as their own.

They are passionate about exercising the faith. Father Mbewe even conducted mass at Masiye Motel in Lusaka where all baptised brothers and sisters who support the idea of priests marrying had fellowship.

Father Mbewe says that Brazil has recorded the biggest movement of married priests called National Catholic and Apostolic Church of Brazil which boasts of some four million members and more than 50 bishops, the movement is gathering pace around the world at a fast rate and some have wondered whether Archbishop Milingo will use the movement to establish a new version of the Catholic Church.

Zambia Episcopal Conference (ZEC) president, Telesphore Mpundu clarified the status of the former Archbishop of Lusaka, Emmanuel Milingo, in the light of media reports that he was planning to come back to Zambia.

“We reiterate that the former Archbishop has been excommunicated. Excommunication means that he is no longer part of the Catholic Church. By his own actions, he has knowingly and willingly cut himself off from the Catholic Church. He therefore cannot preside over any religious function in the name of the Catholic Church. If indeed he wants to come back to Zambia, it is within his rights to return to his homeland. However, we urge our Catholic faithfuls to be aware that if he holds religious functions, then those ceremonies will be done outside the Catholic Church. Therefore they are not Catholic services.” Bishop Mpundu said.

The Vatican said in September that Milingo and the four men he ordained as bishops were “automatically excommunicated” under Church law.

Father Mbewe described Milingo as a legend who has been made stronger by his excommunication. He said Milingo’s association with the Unification Church should not be misunderstood as Rev Moon has merely offered him a platform.”Excommunicating Milingo was the biggest mistake Vatican made because they have made him more stronger, this can only be compared to what happened when they expelled Martin Luther King in 1520. They elevated Martin Luther to be the founder of the Protestant movement. Vatican has given Milingo power to establish a new version of the Catholic Church.” Father Mbewe charged.

Father Mbewe says that since the Pope ordained Milingo in 1969 he has had special powers that cannot be revoked by anyone, adding that he transferred apostolic power to the four bishops that he ordained in New York to begin an effective global movement to call for an end to priesthood celibacy.

Critics say that the present policy of the Church on celibacy is inconsistent. The Catholic Church has married priests in the Eastern Rites. Moreover, in recent decades, Rome has allowed the ordination to the Roman Catholic priesthood of married ministers who had converted from the Anglican Communion or from Protestant denominations. They have argued that some men may be married priests and others may not.

Archbishop Milingo said the Catholic Church should embrace more than 150,000 married priests worldwide in part to ease the ongoing clergy shortage and to elevate the sanctity of marriage.Milingo insists he is still Catholic in faith, his heart and soul and any service that he performed would be of the Catholic faith and would bring healing to the people of Zambia.

Bishop Mpundu said that the Church had heard that Archbishop Milingo had intentions of coming to Zambia and advised Catholics that his functions would not be recognised by the Church.

But Milingo has insisted that for the love of the people of Zambia and of all Africa he will not exclude anyone who will come to his healing sessions.

  2. when we look at the happening in the Roman catholic church, it is clear that TIME HAS COME FOR GREAT REVIVAL, for a long time people have been suppressed, by not telling them the TRUTH.Many presits having been having sex with nuns, many children have been born between, who have placed in homes with the so called foster parents. No matter how long it has taken for the people like Milingo to come out and speak the truth,The PERFECT PLAN OF GOD, will not be supressed.
This is the reason God created man and woman, not prist and Nuns. People let’s get this truth clearer and known, now. Let us stop this kind of nosense, and madness.
    Thanks.

  3. #2Those who are married priest and nuns are like fallen angels. The Catholic Church does not force nor does not restrict people to marry. Its very simple, if you want to stop stop.. then the other serious priest will bless your marriage. Those who want to stop can live and form whatever movement they want to form. The catholic church stands. Mind you the church is not made of people who are same with God.We have sinners and saints. God does not discriminate. Even people who are married they cheat on their spouses. Thats no guarantee to say that the Catholic church has been oppressing people for a long time. Ok!!! let us allow those who are married and at the same time have either boyfriend or girl friend get married to this people as long as they want. A Catholic priest is bound by vows same with a married person. So let us not defend fallen angels. But let us pray for them.

  4. That is the problem with people that, “want to have their cake & eat it!” As #3 says, it is all a matter of choice, just becoz these priests have been cheating & now feel the need to justify their cheating, doesn’t make it right. These people took vows in front of their congregations – they should learn to be honorable men. No one is stopping them from having a family or indulging like us sinners, as they would often refer to ordinary people like myself, when they stood in those pulpits. If these priests DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT DEVOTION & FREE CHOICE are, they should enroll in primary school to try and renew their understanding of these terms!

  5. # 4: Thanx Bauze life is all about choices. If you sin you don’t justify by saying am being oppressed. You only confess and God is there to forgive our sins. No matter what!!!! he will forgive like the prodigal or lost son. God is not like us. He gave us a free will

  6. Ba Anzanga Mbewe u are comparing ur movement to what happened when they expelled Martin Luther King in 1520.Its more 480 decade ago but the Catholic church still stands. What makes u think that now the church will be moved by ur movement.Movements will come & go,but the church will live on.Infact the more movements are formed, the more the Catholic become stronger. As you know very well know that, Christ himself built the Catholic church on St Peter, the rock & no human rocket, bombers or any kind of machinery will destroy it.For those who are leaving is just a passing phase for the Catholic church & does not bother most the Catholics,it will soon come to pass, but the church will stand on forever, until Christ comes back. For ur information more & more Catholics are being baptised every year, because our focus is to preacher the risen Christ not about forming movements. We just pray for u & ur fellow fallen angels to come back to ur senses and rejoin the church,to which u’re most welcome.

  7. Ni mpulumushi fye ama Priest bashinoshiku. Getting married at 72 mupamba sana, it means someone was not faithful to himself and to God, started ubupulumushi kale sana.

  8. nowhere in the bible does it say priests/nuns must be unmarried.Priesthood is a calling which may call on married or single people.Celibacy in priesthood is a MAN-MADE restriction.Archie Milingo is merely trying to say that you can still preach the word as a Catholic priest whilst married and you should be allowed to make the PERSONAL choice to be celibate or not. Sexual abuse among celibate men and women of the cloth is now public knowledge not that it is necessarily on the increase..it has always been there. The church just like the rest of us must move with the times….religion or its practise is not immune to change.

  9. If priests where allowed to marry, we wouldnt have so many kids molested and all the so called secretely married priests. Mind you all the 20% secretely married priests are living in sin and when they lay their sinful hands on you, they are just transfering demons to you. There is nowhere in the bible where it says to be a priest or Bishop you have to be celibate. However, there is a scripture that says rather be not married in order for you to dedicate your energy and life to God. The same scripture says if you can handle celibacy marry so that you do not live in sin. Celibacy is not a requirement to serve God. The difference between a cult and a church is just rules pretty much. If you start making rules in a church that are not consistent with the scriptures you cease to be a church you become a cult. Catholics should stand by the married prists if they want to restore the faith and trust people had in the priesthood. You cant even trust a priest with your wife any more.

  10. Hey it’s good we hear these things happening. Now let’s look at it in this way, we’re all human who fall short and need God’s grace. Why do we rush into judging and condemning? These kind of things are eyeopeners, maybe God is challenging us as individuals to look into our own lives and see how we can change things. On the other hand, it’s important for anyone taking serious whatever they vow to live. At the moment the Catholic Church upholds celibacy for the priests and if one decides that then let one respect it. The Church does not force anyone to remain celibate but it’s a choice. The Church is made of human and Divine. As human she is growing in her understanding of the mysteries of God. If one day she decides that priests marry then it’s a good thing too. At the moment let those who want to remain celibate respect that and if they have problems, let them seek help or leave the priesthood…. Otherwise am not supporting Fr. Mbewe and his…. whatever…

  11. #9 Sage , you are missing the point, It’s all about CHOICE, choice to be catholic, choice to become a priest in the catholic church – whose rules or calling, everyone is aware of, & also CHOICE TO SIN after having taken those HONORABLE VOWS!

To lay things bare, we all know that those who enroll in seminaries & convents, are all well looked after, you don’t need much in terms of qualification, all you need to show is DEVOTION & COMMITTMENT. Thus for alot, that fail to get to higher education, this is one route they follow with out really being committed, mind you these are not kids we are dealing with, they spend 7yrs in the seminary – so they CHOOSE TO LEAD A DECEIVING LIFE RIGHT FROM THE START, don’t blame the scriptures, infact the scriptures don’t have to say one has to be celibate, the church decided, that for one to preach without distraction, one ought to commit his life to serving the church – so it is really crap to try & look for excuses!!!

  12. #8 Yes it is human restriction BUT IT has a free choice. like #6 said movements come and go the church stands. If a priest wants to marry he must go the church does not restrict. If he wants to preach let him preach people preach everywhere. A Christian lives by the word of God not of priests. of course priests have got a duty to bring the people of God to him. but if they fail every Christian has got this duty to bring the people of God BACK. Please people REMEMBER PRIESTHOOD IS A FREE WILL. IF YOU HAVE ATTENDED THE ORDINATION A BISHOP ASK THE PEOPLE IF THIS PERSON IS WORTHY TO BE ORDAINED. AND HE ALSO ASK THE PERSON IF HE IS. THE BISHOP IS NOT GOD HE CANNOT PREDICT THAT THIS PERSON WILL MARRY SO LET US DENY HIM. THOSE WHO ARE SAYING THAT YOU CAN NOT TRUST A PRIEST SORRY ITS ALL HUMAN BEINGS REMEMBER PRIESTS COME FROM OUR HOMES THEY DONT FALL FROM HEAVEN IF THEY FAIL THEY SHOULD NOT BE MAKING NOISE INSTEAD LET THEM APOLOGIZE FOR CHEATING US THAT THEY WILL KEEP THE VOWS AND NOT

  13. I don’t think # 9 really reflected on his comment. We hear about a lot of kids being molested but are they all molested by priests, NO. You’re missing the point here because as many comments already, priesthood is a choice. We’re rational beings and that gives us the capability to choose. Besides, saying that the Church is making rules that are not consistent with scripture, is a heresy. You actually need to confess that. You need also to pray for the gift of faith because I think it’s lacking in you. The Church has Christ as her foundation and therefore it’s Christ working in the Church.

  14. MIND YOU A PERSON TO BECOME A PRIEST SPENDS 7-15 YEARS AND ALL THIS TIME IS SPENT IN STUDYING PHILOSOPHY AND THEOLOGY SOME STUDY MEDICINE AND OTHER SCIENCES THIS YEARS ARE SPENT SUCH THAT ONE IS GIVEN TIME TO DISCERN ABOUT HIS CALL. ONE HAS GOT ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD TO MAKE A CHOICE TO EITHER GO TO THE ALTER OR STOP AND DO WHATEVER THEY WANT. I KNOW THESE MARRIED PRIEST WANT STATUS. POWER AND STATUS. PEOPLE HERE ARE CONFUSING THE BIBLE WITH PRIESTHOOD THE CATHOLIC CHURCH HAS GOT ITS OWN RULES. THE ANGLICAN HAS. PRIEST MARRY ORTHODOX SAME WHY CAN’T THEY JOIN THESE CHURCHES AND LIVE THE HOLY CHURCH ALONE.

  15. # 9 THE CATHOLIC CHURCH DO NOT GET PEOPLE WHO HAVE NOT REACHED HIGH LEVELS OF EDUCATION ONLY PLEASE, THESE PEOPLE STUDY. YOU GUYS, READ ABOUT WHERE SCIENCE CAME FROM, THE FIRST SCHOOLS IN EUROPE THE CHURCH HAS GOT INTELLECTUALS. LOOK AT ZAMBIA WHICH SCHOOLS ARE THE BEST…AND WHERE FIRST TO BE BUILT.THE CHURCH HAS BEEN THEIR TO EDUCATE. THATS WHY AFTER EDUCATING THESE GUYS THEY THINK THE CAN CHALLENGE THE MYSTERIES OF GOD. THE CHURCH CAN GET IRRATIONAL PEOPLE AND MAKE THEM RATIONAL. THE CATHOLIC FIRST MAKES PEOPLE REALISE THAT THEY ARE HUMAN THEN TEACH THEM TO BE SAINTS THEN LASTLY TELL THEM THAT THROUGH THEIR OWN WILL THEY CAN CHOOSE TO BE BETTER PEOPLE LIKE SAINTS

  16. #11 thank you for your comment. However, I want to point something to you too. Hey, we’re talking about priests of the 21st century here… come on! I don’t agree with you that priesthood is the easiest way that needs only DEVOTION & COMMITMENT. If you do your research well now, you’ll find that all the Seminaries admit those with division one to their programs. That thing of piety is gone… The 7 or so years they spent in seminary is of serious study. Otherwise one has all these years to really make sure that what they want to do and that it’s what God wants them to do. Having this in mind I’d support you that one should not try look for excuses whatsoever….

  17. #9 Sage, sorry for sounding harsh in my last posting, just that it drives me up the wall, that so many look for excuses for simple straight forward issues. People will think am a staunch catholic, yes I was born in such a family, but stopped going to church becoz I stand by my own personal principles, I respect what the church stands for, but am also opposed to so many things that are not for the betterment of society, such as the denial of use of condoms in an HIV/AIDS pandemic, they are so cheap, and would certainly save lives, & also avoid so many double orphans etc etc.

  18. #14 & 16, I appreciate your comments, I went to a catholic high school, at least from my experience first hand, I can vouch having seen allowances being made for devotees who didn’t score so highly.

I know the church has produced a lot of scholars & eminent scientists, however there comes a point where science is unable to explain things further, and THAT’S WHERE FAITH BEGINS. This is where such scholars begin toeing the line of the church, but one would hope that with such people in their midst, the church would look to today’s reality & allow for things that would save peoples lives not just faith, just as the church advocates for a reasonable “living basket” for the poor.

  19. Thanks #18. That might have happened but it’s ceasing as at now. However, what I wanted to bring across was the fact that the shortcomings of some priests today should not be associated with their high school qualifications…. “This shouldn’t be an excuse for anything”. They make mistakes because they are human and not because they were just taken as devotees. The truth is, they spend a lot of years studying and discerning. Your second point is also very true. Science cannot explain the matters of faith. Maybe all we need to do is ask the Church to read the signs of time and see what God is saying in all these revealed good and bad things. I believe God wants each and every person to find a way of responding to issues like of HIV/AIDS, poverty etc etc.

  20. #18 am glad that you have said that the Church has produced good people and it also takes dull and sharp people to be in its circles. Same with other schools they take people hoping they will be better but it ends up bad we can’t blame the rules its the people. And we all agree to this. can you blame the church for this no!!! . So i will conquer with your first words “its a choice brothers and sisters. I have been taught by sharp priests and nuns as well. If it was not for a NUN i was going to be a bad guy believe me. Through her intelligence i changed the way i looked at the world.

  21. #18 For the sake of understanding what is reality???? because it is a reality for me that God can explain everything and at the same time it is a reality for some that God can not explain everything…. I you referring to things that exist physically or mental existence. Because these leads to have many realities….

  22. IT’S TIME FOR SELF INTROSPECTION
A well meaning activist would not promote anarchy. A closer study of the so called oasis Forum reveals that their confusion driven agenda is legally contemptible and frivolous to follow. They want the current constitution to be shredded and trashed then a new one adopted on their terms.
They feel their agenda should take precedence over all non Oasis forum/PF aligned Zambians and Government. They want Government to take a rubber stamp role typical of titular administrations without a Give and take spirit. Where Government and the popular patriotic population has spotted and hindered their unsympathetic motives, they have counted on anarchy to blood-let peaceful Zambian souls.
No learned soul, patriot, visionary, entrepreneur, law abiding democrat or progressive person would endorse their anarchy centered agenda motivated by lawlessness. We are not emerging from a war or under some junta transitioning into Democracy to warrant their approach. If we shred the supreme law of the land-Constitution on which the country is governed, under what laws will Government be administered? Where will the branches of Government; Executive, Legislature and the Judiciary derive their powers to run this country? Anything done in the absence of a constitution would be illegal. The Presidency would be illegal; Commander in-chief powers would be illegal. This is how lawless these anarchists are. They are an immediate danger to support and align with under any circumstance of democracy.
The ZCID is the most inclusive approach towards a people based constitution. The current Oasis forum/PF is not a Zambian voice and has no mandate to dictate our way. I challenge all cadres blindly buying the idea of anarchy to find some time and look at “Reciprocal effects of party identification and policy opinions in a multi party system”. If Oasis forum thinks it has the People’s mandate, let it enter and compete in the political arena and measure its worth. In the same vein, I challenge their disillusioned legion to consolidate their support and prove us disdained entrepreneurs that they are worth our support. I beat my last dollar they are nothing but a legion of rumbling trolls with a hollow place in the Zambian power politics.

  23. #17 Bauze, Let me enlighten you on Catholism, In Zambia to become a prist you need very good grades @ G12. On tope of that you will spend 12 years studying. In the Western world you can marry have kids, divorce and decide to be a priest. Most of the Priests in the US where married their wives died and they decided to become a priest. In Africa become a priest a form of employment. If the economical situation, that is not a choice. Ok that is survival. In Africa there is no difference between becoming a priest and getting a Visa to go europe or Steto. Both moves are necesitated by economic hardship. Dont talk about choice. If those guys saw a promising future they would be married today with plenty of kids.

  24. I dont normally comment on religious matters because there are the worst source of conflicts. Many have died in the name on religious. If you are asked me which church do I go to I will tell you that to all and I beleive in GOd not in a build. What is a dinominiion how was it founded and what has it brought on earth.hartage and separation. Pipo dont free infringed this is my stand Jesus could sit with lepers, prostituties, Tax collectors, Rich and poor people on the same table. For me what matters is to have faith and obey the 10 commendaments and any rules that makes mankind a better person the world a better place to live. Celibacy refers either to being unmarried or to sexual abstinence. Celibacy is sometimes used as a synonym for “abstinence” or “chastity.” A vow of celibacy is a promise not to enter into marriage or engage in sexual intercourse. The term involuntary celibacy has recently appeared to describe a chronic, unwilling state of celibacy.

  25. Celibacy for me could be a good weapon to fight HIV instead of being a restriction on individuals like priest, nun who do it anyway in pravacy committing sin. Good tells in Gensis to go and multiply in Mat.19:12 the message is clear how we should behave.Celibacy was introduced during the reformation because of misconduct by priest at that time who wanted to sleep with every woman who came seeking help from God through them. Mind you, you have to open yourself in a secret place where only this father or priest is in charge. You can just imagine what goes on behind the stage. The churched changed this by claiming what is written in Mat:19:12. The bible from Gensis through out it is clear about marriage. See Gensis,Tim 4:1-5 , Heb 13:4 and 1 Cor 9:5. In other religions there are similarities.
    In Buddhism
In Buddhism, the main goal of living according to the celibate, is to eliminate desire. Desire is seen as one of the main causes of suffering, both in the world as in the mind

  26. ctd..or heart. A commonly-used metaphor sees desire, especially sexual desire, to be like drinking salty water: the more one consumes, the greater the desire -and the worse one’s (mental) state of health becomes.
In Hindu culture, celibacy is observed when the young child leads a student life. A Hindu renunciate may take the vow of celibacy at any age when they have understood that living for material/sensual pleasures will never bring the perfect happiness that their soul desires. Thus their life becomes centered on surrender to Guru and God with the firm hope of God realization and the perfect Divine Happiness.
    Reasons for celibacy
    -Religious beliefs (religious celibacy)
-To avoid the risk and/or prevent the spread of venereal disease
-To focus energies on other matters, like one’s career or social issues
    -To avoid contributing to overpopulation
-To cultivate a relationship according to an ideal of chastity
-An inability to obtain a willing sexual partner

  27. An inability to obtain a willing sexual partner (involuntary celibacy)
A distaste or lack of appetite for sex (asexuality)
A distaste or lack of desire for couplehood
To avoid persecution (e.g. prosecution for gay relations under sodomy laws. The Catholic Church teaches that human life and human sexuality are both inseparable and sacred. The Church teaches that Manichaeism, the belief that the spirit is good while the flesh is evil, is a heresy. Therefore, the Church does not teach that sex is sinful or an impairment to a grace-filled life. As God created the human body in his own image and likeness, and because he found everything he created to be “very good,” then the human body and sex must likewise be good.

  28. Orginal Pundit na Sage,I’m a committed and devoted catholic since childhood, These priests who want marry can do so but I have witnessed ex- priest suffering for their wrong doings after leaving priesthood in sinful way.Muli bible chalilembwa umuntu onse uwasha ulupwa lwakwe lonse asha ing’anda nefyuma ankonka uyu nikachele wandi nakumulu nkamupela insansa shachipesha mano ishingi aka kachele wandi.so this is clear about priesthood.Ba milingo he has failed to live up with his call and now he is misleading others. We need to pray for him. Before answeering this call there is enough time to reflect on whether this is your call. I was educated at Lubushi seminary school along Kasama -Luwingu road, I chose not to be a priest but to save God in different capacity and i’m happy for the choice I made.Vows for prieathood are forever and are different from nuns.

  30. Milingo started having sex with married women along tome ago when he was the Lusaka Mafia Boss.Heclaimed that he had helped barren women concive by perfoming miracles.Full time fornicator he was.
Not surprising therefore that he finally married and forming a disdent movement.
Remember that most of these so called married priests joined the priesthood to escape povert and folowed the church. There, they could eat, sleep and study without having to pay for it.
    Deception.

  31. Mbozi, that is foolishness you are chatting about here. A priest is just ahuman who also feels the call of nature and any bad economy can affect him when he is out. How do you expect a normal human to live for so long without sex. What do you think those nuns and sisters are for. The Catholics have to change or extinct. For a church to survive it has to undergo a transformation to this modern society.

  32. Is there any rough data on what proportion of Catholic priests are involved in sexual affairs? I guess it differs by country/region, but any info?

  33. #34 Francis here are hints of married priest in CC. This initial data I have a bishop to give me details. Prior to the year 1139 when celibacy was made mandatory, popes, bishops and priests were allowed to marry; 2.) In the past 25 years, over 20,000 priests have left the priesthood to marry–an average of 400 per state– USA and 110,000 throughout the world; 3.) We can assume, based on the tradition during Jesus’ time, that his disciples were mostly married men

  34. Former Tanzanian president Julius Nyere once asked with respect to the international debt crisis, “Must we starve our children to pay our debts?” Since Catholics believe the Eucharist is the bread of life, we might reformulate the question about the crisis in the priesthood: “Must we starve our people to maintain mandatory celibacy?”

  35. Okay so according your data, 16 per year in each state in the US. Is the problem worsening more recently or not. Maybe its time the church allowed married priests and gave them less prestigious roles/ranks.

  36. Kwesu, I do believe you have not clearly understand my point coz you have failed to read my lines.I have got friends who are priests and I know they are humans with feelings, choices, and they breathe like anyone else but this does not mean they have to go against the vows they make with God in presence of the witnessing magnitude of catholics. priesthood is call that needs devotion and commitment and above self awareness coz of the its high position you are going to occupy as a go between God and his followers(christians.celibacy is part of priesthood and if you find it hard then dont join save God in a different way.If Catholic was started by an ordinary person then the church will crumble but if it is through God no man will succeed.Milingo was in Rome if he was devoted and he would have been a cardinal. He has gifts but not the will to save.

  37. Was Peter pope of Rome????
‘A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife … one that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; for if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?’ I Timothy 3:1-7. We would call the attention of all Roman Catholics to the fact that the law that priests should not marry is not only not a divine law, but it is a diabolical one. Paul speaks of it as ‘A doctrine. of devils.’ ‘Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils, speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God bath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.’ I Tirnothy 4:1-3.

  38. THE LAST MARRIED POPE

He was Adrian II (867-872). Actually he was married before he ascended the papal throne, but after being elected pontiff, he refused to adopt celibacy or renounce his family. His wife, Stephania, and their daughter lived in the Lateran Palace with him for a short time. Later, one of his chief rivals abducted his daughter and married her by force. Many previous popes had been happily married. In fact, Pope Hormisdas (514-523) was the proud father of Pope Silverius (536-538). Although Adrian (or Hadrian, as he is sometimes called) was the last to marry, subsequent popes fathered numerous children.

39 Popes were married men so who changed the law?

  39. interesting debate.according to 1 corinthians 7 it is good to live a celibate life.an unmarried man/woman can spend his/her time doing the Lords work. But because there is so much sexual immorality each man should have his own wife. Its better to marry than burn with lust. These were the apostle Pauls words, he was sucessfully celibate and wasn’t even catholic. So if our catholic priests are burning with lust let them marry though thats not the higher calling.

  40. Have There Been Any Married Popes?
    St. Peter and St. Siricius
St. Felix III (II) and St. Hormisdas
    St. Silverius
    St. Agatho
    Hadrian II
    Boniface IX
    Clement IV
    Felix V

  41. The seven dispensational periods
Dispensationalism seeks to address what many see as opposing theologies between the Old Testament and New Testament. Its name comes from the fact that it sees biblical history as best understood in light of a series of dispensations in the Bible. Most dispensationalists cite seven dispensations although this is not a critical or foundational factor to the theology:

Interesting isnt I hope pastor Chibwe will read this from SA.

  42. I once had a neighbour who has a child with a catholic priest. This child is 11years old now and the priest supports and vists the mother and child every month even spends the whole weekend at the womans house. The fun thing is the elder sister to the same woman is a nun and she knows about this arragement. When she vists her sister and finds this priest she goes to spend her nights somewhere else. The man is still a priest and heads a dioceses. They should just come in the open and marry.Because having children in secrecy means they are comitting a sin.

  43. Fred M’membe is a very confused animal. Here he goes again shamelessly trying to redeem a troubled group whose impulsive moves have hit a snag. The Oasis Forum vowed to fight GRZ and stage a demo come what may. GRZ has said to hell with your threats we are not curving in. Try it and be responsible on consequences. Realizing the no nonsense tone of GRZ, Sata and his Oasis forum develops Shikishiki polomya. They are cognizant of where they would be languishing for the next 14 days. So M’membe don’t embarrass yourself, GRZ has denied these chaps what they wanted and not that they have cancelled. You helped them in building fake courage to challenge GRZ. But today just because you have realized the uncompromising mind of umushika Shikapwasha you are trying to distance yourself and offer a fake recovery editorial? That is cheap flippancy. Credible people stand their ground and confess their huddles on the way without cooking cheap stories. The whole country knows that Oasis forum has been pressed had in the corner against its conspiracies with Sata. They have finished themselves until another civil society group emerges. The Oasis forum has become a shame and reliability. We need clean non politicized activist in the Genuine Civil society if Democracy has to nurture.

    POLICE DENY OASIS DEMONSTRATION PERMIT

POLICE in Lusaka has denied Oasis Forum and the Collaborative Group on the Constitution (CGC) permission to demonstrate over the constitution making process during next week’s SADC heads of state summit in Lusaka. Acting Lusaka division police commanding officer Kedrick Zombe has informed Oasis Forum that he had a shortage of officers to monitor the demonstration. Zombe has since proposed July 21, 2007 as an alternative day for the Oasis to hold the demonstration.

But Oasis Forum spokesperson Musa Mwenye yesterday said he sympathised with the police officers because they were acting under political pressure. Mwenye said Oasis Forum and CGC members were all law abiding citizens. He said he was happy that the police have finally given a response, unlike the ministers that were making political statements on the planned demonstrations.”I don’t know how genuine the police are in this response but I sympathise with them because they are acting under political pressure,” he said.

He said demonstrations on August 21, could not be possible because that would be after the SADC summit which they were targeting. Mwenye said the Oasis Forum and the CGC would have a meeting where they would decide the way forward. The Oasis Forum and CGC have planned a demonstration during the SADC heads of state summit to urge other regional leaders to help Zambia resolve the constitutional problem.

Last month, home affairs minister Lieutenant General Ronnie Shikapwasha said the Oasis Forum should leave the SADC heads of state alone. Foreign affairs minister Mundia Sikatana also said the constitution-making process was an internal issue that should be left to the Zambians.Later chief government spokesperson Mike Mulongoti said the Oasis Forum and CGC were free to picket SADC heads of state, as long as they would abide by the law.

But justice minister George Kunda on Sunday said the Oasis Forum’s planned demonstrations were unnecessary at present as the government was putting in place the National Constitutional Conference Bill to adopt the new constitution. He said proponents and organisers of demonstrations, chaos and strikes would be held responsible for any damage to property, loss of life or lawlessness, which would occur during demonstrations.
Kunda said it was unfortunate that the Oasis Forum and “those bent on derailing the constitutional review process” intended to demonstrate against government during the SADC heads of state summit next week.

  44. Milingo is the greatest of all. He was shown the truth and is exposing the dirty things happening within Catholic. I encourage all the priests and Romanic catholic fathers to desist from adultery and legally marry.

  45. Gentlemen, let those with ears hear. The last priest in this whole world is CHRIST YESHUA commonly known as Jesus christ. After him there is none to take over his position.Read the bible you people, stop listening to sunday school stories and to those who want to make money by preaching wrong things to people.I believe up to now people go to confess there sins to these 20 percent covetous priests. What a bogus! Its true we are knowing them by their fruits.Go to hebrews book and read about Melchisedeck.

  46. Iwe ci pragmatist and ci veteran

mulifikopo sana. the topic is about catholic fimo fimo and you want to divert it just coz it does not talk about chuchu’s church. Grow up boys. Am enjoying the debate

  47. Pragmatist, are you proving your failures of understanding on this blog? You need to be practical as your name implies.Maybe you are being funded by wrong guys.Wake up!Kwacha ngwee.

  48. Ewe ka Joze (49),
We Mumbimunda we, ala ulichimbusu ichafwasa amafi. Wafula imititi muchimutwe icho. Who told you ba Veteran is here to appease you? Filabinduka fimafi mumala ngawamono ID yaba kalamba? Leave him alone he has some of us informed of important missed articles from the press.

Why don’t you see anything wrong with many Pasted or off topic posts ever here? Umona kwati elintu shalaya ngulu shobe nga wa joina bupatili? I’m affraid ukachilamo ukusuntula mununa yakwa ka wanyanya (50)uyo. Fimano ifya Kukamatipa nanomba musamba pa sate we ala fileke nafikufilwa!

  49. The Church is not a building, the church is the pipo who have gathered to worship God in truth and in spirit with Jesus as Head. God said where two or three gather together in my name there am I in they mindst and whatever they bind or agree in my name it is done even in heaven. Therefore if the Catholic church has agree for Celibacy for their priests, even in heaven it has been agreed. It’s just like laws of country, some pipo failed to abide by the laws of a country, that does not mean a country should change the laws for the sake of those who fail to keep them. A BIG NO. Those who have agreed for their priest to marry they can go ahead, but should respect others just as much as they want to be respected.

  50. Fighting within the premises can be effective. Milingo being black and trying to change the face catholic is labeled as a black sheep with the objection of disturbing the doctrine of the Catholic Church. The course he has taken needs bold men to turn the inside out of the Catholic Church and stopping living in pretence. Moreover, Anglican Church last to break away from catholic on the ground of letting priests to marry and now there is a problem also of ordaining gays as priests which is likely to mushroom the circles of catholic despite being suppressed in countries like Argentina and Guyana. I entirely support Milingo. Ukushipikisha kusuma but if you can’t then don’t live in pretence AND GET MARRIED.

  51. #53 Ba Joze where is Kuku I had flown into Zambia last week and went to Main Masala to look for him I didnt find him. Has he go back to his teaching career?

  52. Can you imagine a celibate Catholic priest giving marital advice?? Similar to a blind person matching clothes for you to wear!! Churches have to move with the times and are not immune to change. When you don’t change you soon become irrelevant.Politics is the same as well…Cobra is still using UNIP era tactics at his rallies and we can all see how irrelevant he is becoming.Churches that are dynamic will survive and continue to grow whilst abashala muchakale will perish.Strangely enough at this point you can use the word EVOLUTION and CHURCH in the same sentence!!

  53. Ba Joze(53), well said…well said!!There should be no controvesy…those who feel their priests can marry must feel free to follow Archie Milingo & Co, those who feel it is not for them should stick to their guns and be given equal amounts of respect. When we all meet on judgement day we will all find out who was right and who was wrong !!

  54. #55 Easy

Am with Kuku in Kabwe making a movie “Sheli” and we have just finished the part were Sheli’s father died in mine accident and tomorrow we are proceeding to Ndola. Kuku is acting on the role of Sclivina.

    #51 Insaka/Veteran
Common no-sense can tell that ci 51 ni ci veteran iciloshi cine cine ci bootlicker cakwa chuchu. Wanya ulecimona chuchu ngayamwikata chipumpu ya number 111 ukubwela ni kumbo. Iwe ci veteran, we have read all the rubbish you have now majored in copy and paste. Wacipuba wee, how do you know that we have no access to others sources of info? The best you can do is to paste the web site.

  55. #56 Yes a Celibate Catholic priest gives marital advice to married couples because they learn all the subjects through the many years at the seminary, including politics, science, name them.
#58 Ba Jose mubebe ma Kuku ati twalaleka ukubacitila kapani nomba for 2011 pantu bakokola sana ku Kabwe kamukuba, impiya bashile nashipwa.

  56. #60 Ba Easy naimwe muleipusha kwati kaice, when u know the answer already. Sex become a sin, only when committed out the marriage.

  57. AM(59),marriage is not a text book subject that can be learnt by swotting for years in a single sex environment. There is something called experience, which for certain jobs all employers will ask for.A surgeon with 20 degrees but no practical experience is likely to kill you on the operating table even during a simple procedure!!!Education is no substitute for experience..it is a mix of both that make you complete and competent.Ba AM,the world is changing and there are many ways to achieve the same goal.Either adapt or be extinct!!Being married will not make you any less of a servant of God,but should you choose to be,it makes your life complete and better placed to understand the complexities of family life.My standpoint is that.. Catholic priests should have a choice to be or not to be married but either way practise, preach and live the life of a Catholic!!

  58. The problem of the Catholic Church is that its strongest doctrines have no biblical foundation at all! If only they could say ‘the Church conducts itself in this way because that is ehat the bible says!’. Instead most of the teachings, including celibacy are based on mere traditions. By the way most people do not know that celibacy has not always been the policy of the Catholic church. It was introduced less than 300 yrs ago!

  59. #44 I don’t even trust or believe you. If that man whom you say is a priest really is a priest or pastor. because A priest does not head a Diocese. He rans either a school,Parish and in Zambia they ran hospices and missions In Europe and USA a lot they become doctor laywers even in Zambia whatever they want to do. A Bishop is a the head of the Diocese.

  60. Ba Chiller(64), it is no wonder the more inquisitive younger generation are aethists!! You just don’t know what to believe!! After reading and watching the Da Vinci Code i felt rather empty as the story was plausible. The shroud of secrecy surrounding the church has crumbled over the years and more and more people are rethinking the “HOLINESS” of these “sacred” institutions!!100 years from now the concept of religion will be VERY different as it was EQUALLY different 100 years ago!!

  61. #60 Sex is not a sin. Sex is sacred. It is holy and something which is holy, must be respected. When two people have sex they become one, thats why that union is not allowed to those who are not going to be married. Long time ago in the Catholic church sex was meant for procreation only. But now as you know the Church grows and it changes. According to what people are going through. Sex is now meant for that physical and spiritual union between two people male and female. Homosexuals no!!!! But what happens is this: since there is this holy theme behind sex people justify that its wrong and its a sin, like what some of the people here are saying that to be single is wrong unless you are married. the catholic church does not stop people from marrying. Actually it promotes. There are people in these world who are not religious but are celibate its a choice. some of them are even catholics they don’t feel called to be priest or nuns. i know a lot in Lusaka.

  62. # 64 you don’t even know what the bible is. It is a holy book or divine words written by humans through the inspiration of the holy spirit. Therefore whatever the Catholic Church does it is through the inspiration of the holy spirit. Its a matter of faith here my friend. You can not take faith and test it in a lab.

  63. The true church that Jesus Christ promised to build is not an institution like the Roman Catholic Church or the Pentecostal church. Rather, it is composed of born again believers from any Church institution. The catholic church has persecuted Milingo for along time. Milingo is right to get married even though I believe that his perception on the so called Rev Sun y. Moon is unbibilical. Nevertheless, his stand to have married priests is biblical although every born again Christian is a priest (1 Peter 2:8-10). Allowing these catholic priests to marry will eliminate sex between priests and nuns especially in Africa and the abomination of homosexuality which includes child molestation by catholic priests in the West. I wish molested Africans will start to rise up like those in Western countries like America who are now suing these abominable priests for damages. Viva the married priests now in the catholic church.

  64. #69 what morals are you bring in society if you bring revenge as a Christian. Thats why we say that Movements end the true Church does not end. People formed the Church so that they might follow Jesus. read the Acts of the apostles. Don’t say Jesus did not form am institution. Look at how churches have come from. Milingos group is not a bad group they can form many churches as they want but they should not say that Catholics oppressed them. Let him form a Church like what other protestants have done. Look at how Anglicans came in to being from the Catholic.look at the protestant. Look at how Christianity broke away from Judaism. Because of Jesus. Understand these things then come to Milingo. If a child in a house does not follow what the father likes then he can go outside and marry. And can even became better than the Father thats ok.the father is always happy to see his child doing fine. Not the child to come and say i want you my father to follow my rules no it does not work like that

  65. The Church in Acts is not an institution. The fact that the Catholic church has lasted for a long time does not mean it is always right in it’s teachings and practices. For example, it canonizes some people as saints. Yet you never find the apostle Peter or the other apostles doing the same. Instead, Paul tells us that every believer is a saint. Read the beginning of every epistle of Paul and you will find out about this. You are right, no child has the right to tell the father to follow his or her rules. We need the rules of the bible and not the dead rules of any church. I am not against the catholic church. I have good friends who include brothers and the so called fathers even though they have no children except the ones they father in secrete through sin.

  66. Ba Chibwe(68), i suppose humans where inspired to remove certain sections of the original bible because it conformed to their spiritually guided perception of what should be in it and what should not be ??Psychology will tell you that when humans fail to either understand an occurence or explain it, they classify it DIVINE and in certain quarters they also classify it HOLY!! In whose interest was the Hypochrypha sealed in vaults deep in the tombs of the Vatican? Pope Gregory’s syphillitic affliction was “inspired/holy or divine”??I’m not being blasphemous but merely allowing the human element/trait of question to run riot !! You can shut me up by saying i’ll burn in hell…but man will ALWAYS question what he sees, feels and does. On what tangible evidence do you ascribe holy spirit involvement in the actions of the Catholic church? The Inquisition and the bloody Holy Wars were perpertrated by this same spirit??The only reason we are Christian is becoz they got here first!!

  67. #71You see the Church is not static it moves and grows nor the Church can change anything out of no where. What ever it does has got a meaning. And thats what it says. Remember the catholic Church has put aside first November as all saints day. you are right everyone is a saint. If the Church had no institution to guide us would you think we were going to be Christians. No my friend. thats why we need it to guide us morally. If all the priest today have girl friends and have sex. can you say that that the Church is useless no. Its there faulty. God does not get corrupted mind you its not all the priest who have got kids. Same not all men and women cheat their spouses. The Church is made out of sinners and saints. And God embraces and includes not excluding like you are doing. God gave us a free will and we should not blame others when we mess up lets clean it up and start moving. What more does it add when a priest cheats nothing my faith is more important….free will my friend…

  68. #69 Imwe ba chebe nimwe ba chabe – u viva those so called married priests but what u should know is that there no longer catholics priests. Why are they insisting of being catholics? They left the church the day they got married. Their movement is associated with Reverend Sun Myung Moon and the Catholic church is not. The church is short of genuine priests or lay pipo for that matter, who want to worship God in truth. The catholic church stands on the words of Jesus that: love one another as I have loved, Jesus did not preacher hatred or division.

  69. #73 What u should know is that God is a mystery, no mind of man can know or understand how God works. You will question and question ur feelings but if u dont have faith u will never know his will for ur feelings. For example: scientist have failed to know the thoughts of human mind, but God’s know the past, present and future. Also u should know that there is another super spirits which works like God (the demons) – the false spirits, which can deceive God’s pipo and even bring thoughts, diseases, wars on God’s creations.

  70. BaAM(76), sounds like putting your head in the sand here!!Why the mystery, we have enough mysterious things to attend to..like how to pay Zesco,ZIBC and land rates every month without default as well as understanding some of the submissions on this blog!Scientists bwana AM,can chart your brain waves and tell whether you are thinking happy things, distressed, anxious or feeling frisky!!Scientists have PROOF of another universe and possible life within it!!I would like to see your faith help us when a 3 legged being falls from the sky and shows you that 1+1 was never 2!! Blind faith is dangerous but if it gets you through the day, makes you happy and mitigates ones personal failures…then go for it comrade, we all have to survive somehow!!

  71. #77 Why the mystery? -Ask God. I dont know, nobody knows and nobody will know. Am out of here, to be continued tomorrow.

  72. #65 weather you believe it or not its the truth.I dont know the the difference between dioceses and parish because iam not catholic.Anyway since you have corrected me then he heads a parish. He come in a van written ****** dioceses.

  73. In some Christian churches, the diocese is an administrative territorial unit administrated by a bishop, hence also referred to as a bishopric or Episcopal Area.
parish is a territorial subdivision of a diocese, eparchy or bishopric, within the Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion, the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Church of Sweden, and of some other churches. The word “parish” is also used more generally to refer to the collection of people who attend a particular church. In this usage, a parish minister is one who serves a congregation.
The term “Parish” derives from Anglo-Fr. parosse (1075), later paroche (1292), from O.Fr. paroisse, from Latin parochia = “diocese”, from Greek παρоικια = “district” or “diocese”, from Greek παρά = “beside”, οικος = “house”. The adjective “parochial” arose from confusion with Greek πάροχος = “riding in the same chariot as”. In the Catholic Church, each parish has one parish priest (as he is usually called in England, Ireland and Australia)

  74. #78 Mystery is genre or trivial literature, its combination of horror, crime and fantasy elements. This is Scheinanglizismsus in English which means criminal thriller like James Bond. In Germany they have a series of films called Akte X or Outer limits. Mystery is usually is conspiracy theory. Examples are films made by M. Night Shyamalan like” the sixth sense”. You experience spirits, UFOs, aliens, and new from the new world order.

  75. l have seen alot of grown ups how we have looked at this matter squarely, now what is the way forward for the officaly marriared prisets, not only here in zambia, but anywhere else?

  76. Contributors to the blog on this matter, first i will introduce myself .Am a catholic priest based here in the united states from zambia. My priesthood was voluntary nobody pointed a gun at me and said if you don’t join and take the vows of celibacy you will die! I love doing what i do for the lord and the mother church.Am not going to be hard on the priests that have left the church, may be it was not their calling, but i would like to stress that the have no right to call for a reformation in the church.Bros and sisters, even in the courts of law when you take a vow you promise to be true to the law and if not you are punished, same thing happend to monsignor milingo and ex-fr mbewe , they errored and the church has laws which guide us, they did what they did knowing what would be of them if they decide to do so.Monsignor milingo knows better about this issue if he really wanted to marry and be in good standing with rome he could have asked for laicization from priesthood this

  77. laicization is possible , a lot of priests and bishops have asked for this and they are relieved of the vows they have taken, the office at the vatican responsible for this is headed by a Re cardinal batista. To be rebelious is not right in such matters, and then blame your weakneses on the church, will loose you but we will still stand firm remember that. Monsignor milingo grew big headed so to speak,he is not the only catholic priest that has the gift of healing, but he got exposed to all this european life and a lot of money given to him has made him grow evil in him.I have great respect for the man but his deeds are distestful, we have a few number of good standing priest of zambian origin here and none of us think what these guys are doing is cool, and we will pray we dont follow their footsteps.Bros and sisters inquire more before you make comments , the media blows things out of proportion.May he bless you all the father the son and the holy spirit. peace

  78. Shikuru Mwape, I hope you remain faithful to the Lord more than you have remained faithful to the church. Remain faithful and don’t fornicate with other priests as homosexuality is an abomination before God. Also, don’t fornicate with nuns. You are better of marrying. I don’t mean that you follow the Milingo movement. What is wrong with Milingo is his involvement with the Mooni cult church. Otherwise, his ideas about priests marrying is correct before God.

  79. #79 You are the same people who claim to be Christians yet do not want to help others. Don’t you know that its everyone’s duty as a Christian to correct others. Talk to you friend or whoever is involved if nothing is done go to the Bishop of the Catholic Church. The other thing take the evidence because it might be possible that you are projecting. You are right i do not need to believe your story in order for it to be true but it can be either way. So careful about judging others that they bad.

  80. #86 You just have a bad attitude towards Catholic people because your reasoning is very poor Just try to be critical over it and see what am saying. You assert this and i cite: “Milingo is wrong by joining the mooni cult church but he is right by marring therefore it is right for Catholic priest to marry because God is against single priest”. Which human being who has studied logic would think like this. Try to reason correctly my friend. Thats why Catholic students study all these so that they can know how to reason correctly.

  81. #88 Father Chibwe how are going to take you here. Are you a christian or a church member? So you mean some churches should not exsist. Which is the right church. The Bible in Mathews say where 2 or 3people gather to worship Iam always there. This is words jesus left us. In addition the heart is the temple of God.

  82. #84&85 Ba Fr mwape I salute u, pls remain faithful to the Lord who has called through the Catholic church. Us lay pipo are on our kneels always to pray for u all priests.
#88 Ba Chibwe never mind pipo kwekwe just continue praying for him and the priests who left, afterrole Jesus commended us to love even our enemies.

  83. #89 Even when you are alone God is present remember when Jesus said if you want to pray go in your room close it and pray in private. Do not be like Pharisees and Scribes. If you want to be a Christian my friend first be a human being then follow Jesus. A human being loves others…

  84. Chibwe, you misquoted me. I wrote, ‘You are better of marrying. I don’t mean that you follow the Milingo movement. What is wrong with Milingo is his involvement with the Mooni cult church. Otherwise, his ideas about priests marrying is correct before God’. But you quoted in brackets saying, “Milingo is wrong by joining the mooni cult church but he is right by marring therefore it is right for Catholic priest to marry because God is against single priest”. I did not say Milingo joined the Moonies. He is nevertheless close to them. I also did not say that God is against single priest. What God is against is single priests practicing homosexuality or sex with nuns. I love Catholics and I don’t hate them.

  85. #92Then i suppose you are not saying it straight anyhow . Because either way it is good to marry and not to marry and thats what most of the people have being saying. Its good to marry and at the same time it’s good for some people not to marry. therefore its all about choice. Now if its about choice why support Milingo who is saying priest need to marry???? Thats were i don’t understand you??? and also you say it is better what do you mean better because some people have been jumping from one marriage to another. Some with priests like Milingo from priesthood to marriage and so forth. Explain better for me???
