No scoring for Zambia

KING FAISAL 0 ZAMBIA 0

ZAMBIA coach Patrick Phiri got the final signal of his team’s inability to score when the Chipolopolo fought to a barren draw against Ghana’s King Faisal Football Club on Wednesday.

Although Phiri may not have pressed the panic button yet, he may inwardly admit the difficulty his team may have at the African Nations Cup finals, having gone four straight matches without scoring.

After the 11-1 victory over Spanish fourth division side Jerez two weeks ago, Phiri’s team has hardly been impressive, losing 0-1 to Tunisia, 0-2 to Morocco, 0-1 to Kessben Football Club before settling for a goalless draw against Faisal on Wednesday night.

Phiri’s men had earlier lost 1-4 to a select side in Andalusia, Spain, but seemed to have found the rhythm when they edged Tunisia 2-1 and annihilated Jerez 11-1.

But a string of unsatisfactory results have now cleared Phiri’s illusions about the true potency of his strike force, especially without Christopher Katongo and Isaac Chansa who are suspended for the first game.

Zambia play Sudan on Tuesday to open their campaign in Group C before facing the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon on January 26 and wrapping up preliminary round matches against the Pharaohs of Egypt on January 30.

Phiri, who confirmed the barren draw result from Ghana yesterday, said the Zambian team played well despite failing to score.

He said first choice goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene was on bench together with defender Billy Mwanza and striker Jacob Mulenga.

Kalililo Kakonje started between the sticks and was substituted in the second half for Mike Poto.

Phiri said he decided to rest some key players because they had played too many games within a short time.

Kabwe Warriors under-20 striker Emmanuel Mayuka, had his first full game for the senior national team.

Phiri said was happy with the way the team played and that the players looked sharper than before.

“We created several chances and we are not even worried despite not winning because the team played well,” Phiri said.

He said the Chipolopolo spent the whole of last week practicing how to create chances, adding that the performance the team displayed against Faisal indicated that it is now able to create chances.

Phiri added that the team would now shift its
concentration from creating chances to scoring.

“It is always good if a team can create chances because it shows that players are able to find ways through their opponents,” he said.

And striker Felix Sunzu junior, who was attending trials in Tunisia, finally arrived in Ghana yesterday to join the team.

Phiri said Sunzu called Pandor yesterday afternoon and told him that he was at the airport.

“As I speak to you, the team manager is at the airport to pick Felix so we are just waiting,” he said.

  2. Chipolopolo created chances, played well, but never scored, says Phiri. We played well! We have heard this before, thats why we are where we are, Good Playing, but not winning. Soccer is about scoring goals, then you qualify, not playing well, maaaaawe Ba Chipolopolooooooo, blunt bullet!

  3. Sudan make final team (ZNBC)

Sudan the team Zambia faces in its first game at the Nations Cup has made its final squad for the tournment.

The players are drawn just from two clubs.

The final 23 have come from from champions Al Hilal and cup winners Al Merreikh.

  4. Adbulaziz, or whatever you rag-head name is, you have been talkinmg a little too much for my liking. i will tell you again that this site is for patriots!! Do not use OUR hard eraned democracy to mock our proud nation. Get a life! You seem hell bent on playing devil’s advocate. We dont need to listen to your crap.

  7. Zambia will be the whipping boys of the tournament because most of the players that have made the team play in mediocre leagues such as the Zambian league and the South African one. All in all the Zambian game will never improve in the absence of proper facilities. Soccer is the number one sport in Zambia and yet there is not a single stadium in the country worthy writing home about. Shame!!! The tournament in Ghana will bring the reality home and open our eyes.

  8. ALL YOU CAMELS WHO ARE SAYING ZAMBIA WILL BE BEATEN GO HELL.

  10. Chipolopolo!!!! What a lousy name for a national team! Who coined this useless and lousy name? Was there a consensus when deciding on this name or it was the usual way – going with the most vocal group? Surely there should be a better name than Chipolopolo which sounds like a word from some popular shanty compound song.

  11. The Zambia national soccer team has always been called the KK11. Chipolopolo is a misnomer which came after defeat of Kaunda .Chipolopolo came from the supporters’s anthem “Chipolopolo iyee!”! otherwise i cannot remember when KK 11 changed to Chipolopolo…… Can any one educate me

  12. It would be great to all all the history of chipolopolo but, what is improtant is not the name. We need a team that gives their country the best they know how. I care less what they are called as long as they deliver.

    Puteni mo ichimwela tubalange!

  13. It would be great to KNOW all the history of chipolopolo but, what is improtant is not the name. We need a team that gives their country the best they know how. I care less what they are called as long as they deliver.

Puteni mo ichimwela tubalange! GO GO ZED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. Anyway to all those who LOVE ZAMBIA as a country, I say I am now geared for AFCON without fear. I feel like I am one the players taking part, nomba we are there and there is and I repeat there is nothing and nobody to fear. At this time losing is totally out, we will win and the whole world and their so called expert i…mbwa will cry, Zambia iwina ichungulo, imagine if we had 16 players in Europe, we would have been World Champions. Here we come, Tuesday live on Euro Sport V Sudan 20:30hrs.

  15. Nangu mubose shani the fact is as for our group it is only Cameroon who are a threat to Zambia the rest is gabbage

  16. KSK(12): There is no problem with the name “chipolopolo”. Would you rather we named ourselves after birds or wild animals as most African teams are called? Eagles, lions, zebras, … boooorrrriiiiiingggg!!!!!

    Iyeeeee!!!! Chipolopolo!!!!!
    Maweeee!!!! Sipolopolo!!!!!!
    Hiyeeee!!!! Hipolopolo!!!!!!

  17. Who is this Abdulaziz walid? Mwana wagalu. Evertime you write it’s negatively about Our Zambia. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH YOU? ARE YOU CURSED OR WHAT?
LEAVE ZED ALONE STUPID, *****,NONENTITY & GO TO HELL WITH YOUR NEGATIVITIES.

  18. #12 The name Chipolopolo is almost perfect forv our national.Chipolopolo means bullet and since Zambia is a copper producing country and the team shoots down opponents, I think it suits the team more than any other name or rather would you have loved it to be in English (Copper Bullets)

Gentle lets avoid this attitude of dismissing everything zambian without valid reasons and tangible alternatives. How can you just wake up and decide the name is not good without explaining why you think so

  19. #20 continued

and without giving alternative names that are better than Chipolopolo. Please do not lower the level of discussion and insult iour intellect we are not you children

  20. want to question our coaches if at all they do manage to watch and track the performance of unknown zambian player abroad.for exam there is bernard simakwenzi doing well in botswana.plaese tell FAZ to train their coaches to learn modern ways of researching using the internet.there scope of team selection is very limited, only picking players that are already on the line light.Even in our local league there very good player who are denied chance to deliver the goods for the national team.

  21. there are also many local player the like of,mazuba mkandawire of city of lusaka, ezekiel lungu, green baffalos, edward simfukwe city of lusaka, charles daka national assembly.please try to increase the scope of selection of player.what makes jose morinho a good coach is having test for good player.that for the national time coach.

  22. WHY CAN WE BELIEVE in a bunch of under performing players beaten by a club and hoping to beat teams like, cameroun dream on patrick.may i ask if this nsunzu guy will perform better in the senior team if he failed to do for the under 23.continue deraming mr phiri.Hey have not done well during the preparation and why should we believe they will do well in the final, its like failing a mock exam and expecting to do well in the final exam.

  23. At the moment, things don’t look that promising. our midfield might be a little stronger with the likes of Isaac Chansa and Ian Bakala but it seems our striking force is blunt. Sunzu will only have had 3 days with the rest of the squad to adapt to the technique and formula of play, can he fit in.. and besides is he that good? but as fans we tend to criticise all the time. Lets just wait and see. Sudan is a must win. Then hope for a win against both Egypt and Cameroon. two draws can see us thru..

  24. You see zambia has no chances, i watched zambia vs tunisia it was so boring. I will start with coach Patrick Phir he has no ideas i don’t what he learned in germany when he was doing his so called “coaching coarse”. i wonder if he watches premiship to see great minds of spurs coach and jose. The coach has a great impact see spurs of England.

  25. this is the curse of zambia at the nations cup all over again.Lets face it,we all want zambia to do well, but reality is we just dont have what it takes. We cant score, plus we cant score…how do you win a game if you dont score?

  26. Go Go Zambia, nangu tuwine nangu tulooze chipolopolo. Go Zambia. If we don’t qualify to the quarter finals, there is no problem, at least, we will have gained more experience. Go Zambia. Chipolopolo, come what may, we are behind you guys.

  27. Sudan will never outplay us. The quality of our players is not as bad as people think. Come Tuesday, I will be somewhere in a Manchester pub enjoying my drink for sorting out the chaps from Sudan.

    Go Chipolopolo!!!
