Government says President Levy Mwanawasa’s condition remained stable in Percy Military Hospital in Paris, France where he is admitted.
Updating the Nation on the president’s condition on National television this evening, Chief Government’s spokesperson Mike Mulongoti said government was confident with the medical attention the president is receiving in France, all will be well.
Mr. Mulongoti has since urged Zambians to ignore earlier reports on BBC, and other international media organisations that President Mwanawasa had died.
Mr. Mulongoti who is also information and Broadcasting Services Minister, appealed to Zambians to regard as false any information outside what government is saying.
He urged the country to continue praying for the quick recovery of the president.

South Africa’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying there was a misunderstanding after President Thabo Mbeki said he had been informed by the executive secretary of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) that Mwanawasa was dead.
Mbeki had called for a minute’s silence while attending a remembrance ceremony in Pretoria for victims of a recent wave of xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
“The doctors attending to (Mwanawasa) are happy with progress he has made so far and his condition remains stable. He has continued to receive treatment for hypertension in the intensive care unit and there are no new developments,” Zambian Vice President Rupiah Banda said in a statement.

July 3 (Bloomberg) — The French Foreign Ministry said Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa was being treated at a hospital outside Paris, countering a report on South Africa’s 702 radio that he had died after suffering a stroke.
The ministry declined to comment on the state of his health, according to an electronic briefing on its Web site today. A spokesman for the Percy military hospital refused to comment, referring all questions to the foreign ministry.

Not a single one has a different source. be it cnn, aljazeera, bbc, fox, sky, yahoo news etc etc all relied on the report on 702 and disappointingly none tried to verify the story. My theory on this issue is that the rumor was generated by white extremists based in South Africa to discredit Thabo Mbeki and the black South African government. The have used this event to create division and hate and to make black africans look unprofessional so that the 2010 world cup can be moved to another country outside Africa amongst other things. I think there is a scheme to bring south africa to its knees for political reasons. Its like this group is getting back at black south africans by any means neccesary. Being in a critical condition implies near death or can be death in political. The govt of Zed,just like African traditional leaders would not be quick to announce the death of the head of state/king. THE mistaken reports of the death of the Zambia President Levy Mwanawasa caused confusion with the Ugandan Parliament prematurely observing a moment of silence for him.
As the Zambian government was denying the death reports in Lusaka, Uganda’s deputy Speaker Rebecca Kadaga asked the MPs to observe a moment of silence over Mwanawasa’s death.
“Before we adjourned for lunch break, I had received information that President Levy Mwanawasa had died. During the break I confirmed the news. Let us stand up and observe a moment of silence in his honour,” said Kadaga as the Parlia

Mr Mwanawasa, 59, an outspoken critic of Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe, was rushed to hospital on Sunday in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el Sheikh.

Messages of condolences over the death of His Excellency Levy Patrick Mwanawasa SC, have been pouring on my head as if I’m an ambassodor. I find it difficult to say “thank you” as that implies accepting that he really died. At the same time, when one is sympathasing with you and you say, “No it is not true” shows that you are not with them. What should I do in this case?
