Mazabuka men shun VCT service

Share

A non governmental organisation which champions the cause of HIV/AIDS in Mazabuka district has expressed worry about the alleged inactive male involvement in the fight against the pandemic.

Total Control Epidemic (TCE) Mazabuka division commander, Memory Zengenene told ZANIS in Mazabuka today that the biggest challenge her organisation was facing is the participation of men in Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) activities.

Ms Zengenene said some men refuse to undergo VCT and in some cases, they become violent when women ask them to do so.

She said such negative attitude by the men folk was frustrating their spouses, who in turn resort to shunning VCT for fear of being divorced.

She observed that since the launch of the TCE programme in Mazabuka two years ago, a total of 26,702 people have been counselled and tested.
Out of this number, 17,233 were women while 9,469 were men..

Ms. Zengenene also observed that people in rural areas were more willing to be tested than those in urban areas.

Meanwhile, Ms Zengenene has called on government to provide marine transport for villagers to cross rivers to access antiretroviral drugs.

Mazabuka is second from Livingstone in terms of high HIV infection rate in Southern province.

  1. Emo twapita, emwingi.Ilyashi lyakupimisha. Its not easy to pluck up courage for VCT especially that its now common knowledge that when you are diagnised positive, then ultimately its death regardless of the length of time. Tongas are fond of multiple partners 3 – 5 girlfriends or wives each. With the ratio of 1 out of 5 being HIV positive in Zambia, Tonga men suspect themselves and this gives them fear.

  2. what are they afraid of whether you dont go for a test doesnt take the virus away the signs and symptoms will manifest at one given point . u better off testing and accessing ARVS aka top up . is there still so much stigma with HIV ?

  3. Brave Tonga Bulls, you are so smart indeed ! y go for vct if you dont suspect any faul play ? let those who are so dull of themselves go for testing.

I envy the these bulls, they mean business : even the prophecy says > “Men satisfy your wifes , wifes submit yrselves to yr husband.”

Keep it up guys.Your a hot cake on the market.!

  4. # 1 AND 2

YOU ARE ID#*T$, nambala 1, nambala 2! WHAT’S THE MEANING OF BEING THE FIRST OR SECOND ON THE BLOG? OK, YOU ARE #1 AND #2 SO WHAT? UNCIVILISED BLOGGERS LIKE YOU TWO SHOULD STAY OUT OF HERE LEST YOU CONTAMINATE EVERYONE ON LT BLOG!

  5. IT IS SAD THAT MEN ARE THE ONES REFUSING TO GO FOR VCT AND YET THEY ARE THE MOST PROMISCUIOUS.THEY HAVE MORE THAN ONE WIFE AND A COUPLE OF CONCUBINES. THIS SHOWS THAT WE NEED A LOT OF EDUCATION IN AS FAR AS AIDS IS CONCERNED DESPITE THE NUMEROUS EEFORTS THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN MADE SO FAR.GUYS AIDS IS REAL BE SERIOUS.THESE GUYS’WIVES SHOULD INSIST ON USING CONDOMS.SEX WITH CONDOMS IS AS GOOD AS DOING IT LIVE BUT VERY SAF.

  6. #13 OK.You should not encourage these guys. They need proper education on HIV/AIDS.#8 If the Tonga Guys suspect themselves, then it is only prudent that they know their status as early as possible and take coorrective measures wheather positive or negative

  7. Going for VCT is not as easy as going for Malaria check up.

I think Counseling alone can work and draw more men and if they feel like testing, they can do that at an another date. Not the two at once!!

  8. That is why its VCT its voluntary, no one should force them if they understand the meaning. The problem is that the NGOs are more of monitary gains as oppossed to charity. They want to have more returns to lobby for more funding which does not reach the intended beneficiaries as it is diverted to personal use.No wonder they are not happy with the turn over.By the way LT,is MAZABUKA the the only place this writter is basing the research? We should have a commission to investigate these NGOs. Many of them though with genuine objetives, are false in the making(fortune seekers and optumist on human expense)

  9. #19 FUNA MUSANKWA you are right my brother, the writer thinks Mazabuka is the only town to draw such a conclusion. To me the writer seems not to be exposed to what is going on in zambia on issues related to HIV.The guys in Mazabuka are smart in the sense that they understand the meaning of “voluntary”.Going beyond this understanding simply shows how desperate the DIRECTOR of this NGO wants to be heard and make money.BAKABWALALA BALALILA MASUKU expectant of the fourth coming financial budget from the world bank.

  10. The biggest hurdle in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Zambia is lack of political will. Politicians should push for legislation to punish people who are wilfully spreading this disease. Many innocent souls have been lost after being infected by these serial killers. When I was in Zambia, I had a neighbour who had lost four wives. They all died the same way…Kaposis Sarcoma.

#19 and 20 I dont see any point in your conclusion that the writer wants to gain fame, money or the like. Are u just mad at NGOs ??? There is no attempt to say this is how it is all over Zambia. The writer only see from the numbers that double as many women go for VCT than the men…. Is that not alarming – other bloggers at least try to comment on that fact. Be brave – give your comment on that – What is the reason for that ? #19 and # 20 You seem to be local Mazabuka guy who have something to hide…
