Zambia to upgrade townships

Share

The Zambian Government says it will in the next two years improve water and sanitation.

Local Government and Housing minister, Ben Tetamashimba said this will help prevent the outbreak of water borne diseases.

Mr. Tetamashimba disclosed that President Rupiah Banda directed his ministry to ensure that all townships are upgraded.

He was speaking on a live ZNBC Television programme, National Watch.

And Health minister, Kapembwa Simbao said government has intensified its efforts to contain the spread of cholera in the Southern African nation.

He however expressed fears that cholera will continue if people do not change their personal hygiene.

Meanwhile Education minister, Geoffrey Lungwangwa said schools in the cholera infested areas will soon open after improving their environment.

He says government will not put the health of over sixty-two thousand pupils from different schools at risk.

Meanwhile Cholera has broken out in Chief Hanjalika’s Chivuna area in Mazabuka where health authorities have turned the clinic into a Cholera centre.

Confirming the development to ZANIS, today, Mazabuka Mayor, Edmund Cheelo told the Mazabuka District Health Management Team (MDHMT) to seriously move in and protect people in villages who lack knowledge on hygiene.

He said the Ministry of health should provide necessary drugs and equipment to enable staff provide disinfection facilities.

Mr Cheelo who visited the centre this morning said five patients are admitted to Chivuna clinic which has since been turned into a Cholera centre.

The Mayor also urged education authorities to extend the closure of schools in Chivuna area to protect lives of both pupils and teachers.

Meanwhile, all Cholera patients at Ndeke Clinic Cholera centre in Mazabuka have been discharged from the centre.

Health Staff at the centre who confirmed the development to ZANIS in Mazabuka today said all the patients were discharged yesterday.

  1. Ok! but two years is a long time! why not start this year?? oh i forgot, that will be in good time for the presidential and parliamentary elections! Hmmm! Good timing!

  2. Ba Simbao should know better. It`s not about personal hygiene as such.

No offence, but the British are not the best when it comes to personal hygiene having lived with them for ages. Before one even starts about the temperatures and all that, about 4-5 years ago, we had the best summer for years. Temperatures were just like back home an excellent recipe for Cholera to spread. The environment just doesn`t allow-simple. 😉

  3. #2 jernks,
u’re very rite,it long over due..this shld hav been done actualy 17years ago.nw lets jst see tetamashimba fulfilling these promises..nt jst talking without making sure th2 the project are emberked on.dnt jst talk..we need action and less talking ba teta.

  4. Quote Mr. Tetamashimba disclosed that President Rupiah Banda directed his ministry to ensure that all townships are upgraded. end quote.

In 2 years baba. Just how may are all townships and what is a township in the first place? Mine is officially called Roma Township. Does that count? Explain WHAT, WHERE and WHEN when going public. Have you done the research and budgeting?

  5. **==**==**==

    Ba mwinsho #9

    its normal mwelupwa,dont wory.

Mr teta bale voka sana in this ministry,he is always on Tv for this program caled National Watch!! yes will watch him…

  6. We should adopt the village concept of Botswana. The so called village in Botswana has electricity, running water, tarred roads, bla bla bla. Our townships should have been upgraded a long time ago. But only time will tell….

  7. There is too much of “Zambian Government says”! When are we going to hear that “ZAMBIAN GOVERNMENT HAS DONE”? It’s quite very easy to SAY. They can say anything but DOING is something else. Reminds me, the president of Zambia Mr. Rupiah Banda said GOVERNMENT was going to ensure that the miners losing employment in the mines will not remain jobless and added that how THEY are going to do that he quite DIDN’T KNOW. Mere talk just for the sake of talking! Malabishi!

  8. Ba Teta, good intention. Bad motive. Prove to us you can solve the Maziyopa issue before getting them bulldozers from ZNS.

  9. Hi Bloggers.

I have been roughly following your comments on national matters. Roughly bcoz the main thing I read is that all things in Zambia are bad if done by the govt. If govt is doing a good thing, it shud have been done (I quote #7) 17years ago when Sata was in leadership but failed. And this kind of thot pattern repeats itself over and over again. Boring.
There is a Chinese saying I like “The best time to do something is,well, 17 yrs ago. The next best time to do it now.” Other than living in a whine mode, applaud when the solution comes at hand. The ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ you are seeing is the sun. There’s no tunnel any more, just yo perception.

  10. #Baby C. Then they will pretend to be connecting water and sewer lines. After winning the election they will abandon the “project” Typical Zambian politics

  11. I will be very happy if Teta kept quiet and started implementing the directives from his boss without rushing to this state thing called ZNBC and then later get one of the reporters and start showing the nation what he has achieved.

  12. This is a very clever chess move by the government . Promise the nation something in two years which eventually people will forget and then in 2 years time nothing happens. Classic zambian governance promise the world and never deliver, I wonder if anyone will even remember this promise in two years time or be preoccupied by something else. A promise on national tv is not binding or fruitful .

  13. Teta gets to my nerves. I don’t even trust this gvt to deliver anything. How can they even thing of upgrading shanties when they can’t even maitain critical roads like the Zimba Livinstone rooad. A bunch of selfish leaders. Malabishi if i may echo what #21 has said.

  14. The problem pa Zed is we never hold these politicians accountable. They make fake promises but never deliver. They even promise to build bridges where there are no rivers (not literally).Something needs to be done…

  15. #23 Deee2. These guys when asking for my vote they assured me they were going to do abcd. So if perform there is no need to thank them(thankless job) afterall I pay tax in millions. Its not like mone will come from tetas pockets. Am not happy if my tax goes to buy Pajeros for non performers. See the point?

  16. #23. Deee2. Surely, you have been gone from Zed long. Dual carriage great east road, policemen every 10 minutes. Speed traps. green city, swept roads. No potholes. We call that the wonderful paths foreigners use when in Zed. Coffee at manda hill. Life is good isn’t it? For less than 5% of the city.

  17. Shani Baby C,Rashid Jones

I watched the programme,Teta promised to turn around the townships within 6 months,he said he will make sure there will b running water in every township coz if he failed the president would very upset him.

  18. #33 life_life. Sorry pal, I live in Zambia. I have experienced the pain too. One would not expect at a touch of a button to have all roads and houses remodelled. It takes time. A trend to start working on them is in motion. Should it fail, judge them. #30 Deja Vu.. Do just that. Vote them out. Individually. The alternative is to do it yourself. Any progress in development is good progress and shud be accepted so. Bad things shud be condemned so. I pity people who hate Zambia bcoz they don’t like Tenta’s face. I don’t like it either but the beauty is that he does not influence my hunger or lack thereof. Icikalipa cumfwa umwine. It’s yo hunger not Tenta’s. Akuta eve iwe u r just complaining!

  19. Teta will never achieve what masebo did. Why? Because he talks too much!
There is no way in hell he can achieve what he is saying. Now he is taking all of us for a ride. He talks of two years (projecting election time). How convinient! We will just have to wait and see.

LT Whether you moderate or not, the truth is that Teta and Mpombo Talk too much. You dont expect us to keep quiet!!!

  20. Okey ba Deee2. This satellite technology makes most of us look outside Zed. Every month end my I pick up a lovely pay cheque. UNZA has its perks. As I read on it gets smaller and smaller. I know government needs my taxes to function. Were it goes is my concern. You are right about hunger. “A hungry man is an angry man”. Figure??

  21. This Teta fellow is irritating me, he talks too much, it is like I am constantly hearing his voice, am I becoming paranoid?

  22. 10. In view of your comments and “The Zambian Government says it will in the next two years improve water and sanitation,” I must also acknowledge that I am worried about the definition of a TOWNSHIP in the Zambian media and government’s perspective. I have read on here LT that the Ndeke (Zambia) Compound in Mazabuka is a TOWNSHIP. To me, this is a clear joke or display of ignorance about the meaning of the word TOWNSHIP.

Whatever the case, I am hoping that the 2 year grace period GRZ has given itself to work on the Water and Sanitation System by improving it for the better will seriously be result oriented as there are only 2 years to go for this mandate for the current MMD GRZ. Lets see

  23. On the otherhand, Teta has proved to be a man of action as he is clearly showing that his word can be taken by GRZ, local council/municipal authorities and us the normal Citizens.

All the best MMD President Banda GRZ in this two, but I will keep watching you for the U-Team is at hand to take over from you in 2011 should you lamentably fail to discharge your duties.

LT 2008 Award Winner, Maestro Hhehhehhehhe. =; for Zambia.

  24. bla bla bla, here they go again empty promises as usual! Are they planning to do it the MUGABE STYLE by destroying peoples homes promising them to build better ones then people ends up homeless 😕

  25. Evelyn King.

Iam so sorry my comment on #44 I was refering to namayo the director of Tourism please that comment it was not for you.Hope you understand, but all the same I think I was also wrong to call the Director on tourism ati namayo.

  26. And you believe that which comes from Teta’s mouth. Teta is a bootlicker. His mouth all knows how to lick RB’s boot or is it shoes. LOL!!!

  27. u black pips are just usless. Look at your continent, africa, one of the richest yet the poorest. Just call in whites to run things for u. You have failed. All you are good at is stealing, dancing and making childern.

  28. I think #48 you are right. Blacks cant manage their own countries. RSA is like this because of the Muzungus. Look at Zim, once Muzungus were chased out of Zim, look at the country now.

  29. #48,#49 & #50

Circumstancial evidence supports you. Hard to accept but true.

So what exactly is the problem with ourselves.

1)Is it cultural attitudes, behaviours etc
    2)Is it brain power
    3) Is it anti-social behaviours like selfishness, corruption etc where people do not care much about others.
    3) Is it lack of exposure to what others are able to do so we can learn from them.
    4) How do our own people fair out there, in more developed countries. Do they perform just as well.
    5) How about black people in USA, UK etc. How do they compare with those in Africa.
    6) Is it possible for us to do better than we have done so far, in Africa. And how?

  30. First up, that doesnot look like a township to me. i think the thick head is refering to illegal settlements. so if in the first place they do not know what a township is what are they uograding? and to what? a township is a rural dweling so are they uograding they urbanising these areas..how when the urban areas are not even fully urbanised? :-@

  31. How can i be racist when i weep for my black heritege.
major share holders of a campany bring in managment who have proven track recored to run the company. It dosent mean because u own something u must run it. Same of the country, just becaus u own it dosent mean you are best qualified to ensure development. And going by records, it is plain to see black pipo can not run a country. A rich country like zambia living on handouts. Be like Botswana embrace the whites, let them run the country. If a Zambian minsiter sucssedes in getting a loan or begging for $ from the international community, he is a good minister according to your GRZ.

  32. #54 i don’t agree with u.Zambia is an independent country and supposed to be run by Zambians. do u think the whites are more intelligent than u are cos u are an African??Zambians need to know that no one will develop our country if we ourselves we don’t have a heart for our country.don’t behave like u are not in Europe.

  33. Ugrading to what?? Building new houses or just supplying clean water??
Teta and your president we will be waiting. This is 2009 and by 2011 we want to see change.

    I rest my case.

  34. are they planning to upgrade townships or compounds?because if they are putting up pipes and sewerage systems that sounds like compounds, they have to start with mantainance of existing townships first i.e matero, lilanda, kabwata, chilenje, chelston before sarting a big venture they wont even finish

  35. #56 how many more years do you need 40, 100 in order to prove we can develop and not live off handouts ?
Just swallow revolutionary pride and accept failour because you will always be poor and always beg for handouts

  36. ONLY WATER AND SANITATION. ZAMBIA IS A VERY BIG COUNTRY. BUT LOOKING AT THE PLOTS ALLOCATION IN ALL TOWNSHIPS, ONE WOULDN’T BELIEVE THAT ZAMBIA IS MORE THAN THREE TIMES BIGGER THAN BRITAIN. DRAINAGE IS THE WASTE IN THE WORLD. LOOK AT SOWETO. CIVIL ENGINEERS HAVE COMPLETELY FAILED TO COME UP WITH A LASTING DRAINAGE SOLUTION. THE DRAINAGE SYTEM IS EXCELLENT IN GABORONE. LEARN HOW THEY DID IT. One surprising thing is that it is a sandy country (such that they would have easily ignored developing a drainage system). But, despite the fact, they really did a good job on drainage.

  37. Wenye!
Supplying water is different from up-grading (e.g, Tentamashimba needs to be up-graded to civilized politicking: But he needs to be supplied with studying materials first)

  38. I don’t like political statements on development. Solid plans usually are not announced by politicians but Permanent Secretaries or indeed the secretary to the Cabinet. Telling us they will upgrade townships is not a measurable task. How do we know whether Teta has delivered on his promises or not. There are no milestones. These chaps need some form of education in project management and public affairs responsibility. I will make a proposal to RB if he listens. We have to keep pushing these ‘sunka mulamu’ leaders of ours or we are doomed. What can we do? PF is not an option at all as it would even be worse than our ‘Sunka Mulamu team’

  39. :-j Let’s see how good the campaign will be for these useless characters calling themselves MMD.:)>- years dealing will catch up with you Teta, Mr.:-@:-@

PF ..make these characters work for their Rigged elections!=d>

  40. it’s great to finally see some sense being emitted from the buccal cavities of these ministers.what would even be better is to see them move thier asses into action! :-w:-w:-w

  41. Its so unfortunate that we Zambians are so used to being treated like kids with fake promises by the government;(Nizakuletela switi okay?).
What this Teta is saying is nothing but lies. If these guys are serious, I would believe them if he Teta showed us a model of at least one township how it will look like. This nonsense of we are going to do this every time its close to election time should be rejected by all Zambians.

  42. #67, you are spot on and I agree with you 100%. Even Napoleon showed the animals his idea of Animal farm and they worked tiirelessly on it with minimal supervision. What upgrades is Teta talking about? Is it housing, sanitation, water provision, roads, or social amenities or just what upgrades is he talking about? This is total nonsense to me and it should be used for kids and not educated adults like us. teta, get your act right or we shall relegate to the same dustbin like Sata.

  43. It really pains me as Zambian that we have lunatics in govt. like Teta. He is my tribesman but I believe he got that ministerial position as a result of BOOTLICKING. I was in my home town of Kitwe during this christmas and I was appalled by what I saw. I was unable to drive my car in some of the places I went to due to potholes all over the place. In fact not potholes but ditches. Sometimes I wonder if there really a govt in Zambia. I wonder if somebody in govt offices really cares about this beautiful country. Copperbelt generally looks like a war zone. Even Gaza looks much better despite the bombardments from Israel. Mu zambia ukubuta kwachilamo. Its people like Teta in govt. What can

  44. they do? Or what do they have to offer? All these policians ranging from master plunderer Kafupi Chiluba and his minnions like Chungu, Katele, to the current leadership of RB, Mpombo, Mulongoti, Teta, are all birds of the same feather. They do not have the interest of the nation at heart. Ala nimfulwa sana bane. Nshalande sana. Naya.

  45. Is it necessary by tentamashimba to say president banda has directed blah blah? Does it mean these ministers cannot initiate things on their own? In that case there is no need to have all those ministers.

  46. Govt will never upgrade any township. Wouldn’t KK and tito have done that ninshi Zed yalikweteko akapiya? Kalilepuka ifi fine chabe!

  47. I’ve heard this story before! “Town-ship upgrade”! government should perhaps shut up and perform, instead of making noise. lets watch and see!
