President Banda says the Chinese and Indian investors are able and willing to invest in Zambia’s mining sector.

President Banda said a lot of investors coming from the Asian countries are interested in investing in the mines , a move he said would spur economic development in the country.

Speaking shortly before his departure for Libya at Lusaka international Airport , Mr. Banda told journalists that Chinese investors have the potential to take up all the investment if other investors left.

President Banda has gone for a two day state visit to Libya where he will hold bilateral talks with his Libyan

  1. Much as it can be a good idea to have nations like india and china investing in our mine industry ,there is need to also put up a right and strong flame work in place to make sure that only serious investors are allowed to ivest not investors who subject their workers to working in inhuman environments with little or no safety equipment 😕

  2. government should take over some of these mines that are being abandoned after making huge profits by these so called investor, instead of calling on other investors we don’t know they may do the same after making profits. wake up Zambia

  3. There is nothing wrong with Indian or Chinese investment per se. One could point out various reputable businesses that are currently owned by these people (e.g Jaguar Landrover is Indian owned). What matters more than the source of foreign investment is its quality. The quality of foreign investment is influenced by government policy towards business, legislation and the transparency. Inadequacy in any of the aforementioned requirements reduces the prospects of serious investment coming our way. The void caused by the lack of serious investors is inevitably filled by uncouth infestors.

  4. I hope that Nyamaz is not sweet talked into embracing Gadaffi’s petty project of how he wants to dominate Africa through the so-called US of Africa. Gadaffi is another snake oil
    Sales man on this one.

  5. Without a doubt investors are good for the country but I feel that we always give away too much, why not empower our own people. Why should our mines be foreign owned, it’s so easy to come to Zambia and takeover mines, make a profit and leave. The government needs to promote national pride and those women dancing for him should realise that the president works for them, go home and dance for your husband instead of your servant. Grow up!!!

  6. Philosopher, leave those women alone. They have no husbands, no jobs, no leisure facilities apart from tarvens and no nothing. Dancing for RB is their only leisure and source of income and a hobby for some of them:)):-j:d=))

  7. Oh yeah I forgot MMD does pick on the meek and unemployed to do pointless chores for them such as dancing. What about empowering them? is that what they want to do for the rest of there lives dance for their president?

  8. “President Banda says the Chinese and Indian investors are able and willing to invest in Zambia’s mining sector.”

This is only true. Even here, I have Chinese and Indian fellow Students who are willing to offer expertise and investment in Zambia. They are very hard working and I am sure my friendship with them will go a long way in helping Zambia.

As for the asian investment, let it come but we need to make the investor to respect our labour and safety laws.

  9. Probabaly free MMD vitenges and t-shirts and a free ride to the airport. To have these women dancing at the airport shows how busy our airport is.

  10. On “The president stressed that he will make his position known over the united states of Africa after discussions and consultation with other colleagues in the region”, does this entail that our President Mr RB Banda has no position yet of his own or the Zambian GRZ. It appears he is just going to listen to others and then be induced to take a position on being convinced by the Libyan President.

Having our own POSITION is the best Mr President instead of being swayed anyhow by others. I hope this message is not too late to hlep your Administration to re-consider your Zambian position in this matter.

  11. “He is accompanied by foreign Affairs minister Kapinga Pande , Finance and National Planning Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane and other senior government officials”
How many are the other mentioned GRZ officials? Why carry two Ministers with you Mr President? One would have been enough otherwise you would have sent the both of them but remained at home as the US Candolezza Rice has been doing to save money.
I am happy there is no mention of a large GRZ Ministers group and Vice-President information as having had secorted you Mr President to the airport. We need to save any little money that we can afford to by avoiding paying unnecessary allowances and fuel money to your escort group.

  12. United states of Africa is a good concept, but I man wonder if dem ready fi it yet. Dem ha fe go back to de dream of Nkrumah & take it up from this greater son of Africa.

  13. Go back to secondary school and do history properly. Shallow minds like Nyamaz are what lead to colonisation. May be Thandiwe can help since she is a proffessional teacher.
Nothing good can come from an Indian, na muzungu eyesako.

  14. The Zambian government never knows it’s position we are willing to be swayed as far as they can push us we have no ABS to stop us from saying no, this is what we want! Negotiations are important and I wonder who negotiates on our side because I’ve never seen a good deal come out of all the investments. I’d think it’s more about how much will I make out of this deal, instead of how much we’ll we as a country benefit and these are the terms from the Zambian sides for the interest of our people take them or leave them. Otherwise the government can itself support upcoming Zambian businesses to run the mines until that business can stand on its own feet.

  15. #14 Springaz, they go and drink shake shake on freedom way after dancing at the airport and they are later given ma five pin for transport to lilanda.

  16. the women, have you seen “fi twalyangele” on their faces? they obviously move about with powder puffs from foam mattresses to brown their faces.

  17. #20 grow up why the racism, its a debate and opinions, yours is purely racist and ignorant, because if you think nothing good came from Indians, why do they have one of fastest growing economies and a mushroom of billionaires popping up?

  18. Dont allow a lunatic, frustrated lonely villager to divert you from the topic. This is a very important topic. We dont want to long boring and useless comments here.

  19. I second this analysis.

We need to grow up by giving up both tribalism and racism if we hope to develop Zambia as a Nation and Country.

On the United States of Africa, firstly I dont like the name for it is a copy of the origianl USA. Secondly, I think it is a non-starter. All we need is to enhance trade within Africa. Instead of selling our iron in raw form to Japan to make cars, we must sell it to South Africa. Even our copper can be taken to South Africa SA instead of China as SA has the capacity to produce finished products. Also, we need to develop companies from universities to cahnge raw materials into finished products. Africa can do it. Let money circulate in Africa.

  20. #9 ba nora for your country to be where america is today it will have to pass where india and china are today.so since their economies are much much bigger
Than our tattered one we have, they qualify to invest in ours and it’s up to us to learn from them or perish. If you want to find out more about indians and their wealth, go to england and ask the queen who lakhshimi mittal is.it will help your small mind.

  21. I remember making a suggestion to the late president Mwanawasa about setting up an investment fund for Zambians abroad where people can make contributions into the fund for investment into Zambia and then become shareholders into the companies where the money is invested. This will be money by Zambians for Zambians and any dividends will still be used in Zambia, this should be one area we must seriously be looking in addition to other investment sources, can some one look at this seriously. I made this suggestion to the late president at a meeting with Zambians at the Zambian High Commission some years back and he did not dismiss it, can we look at this as another source of investment?

  22. #29 and #30 good to see you two, where is Anoymous? I think you three had a nice overnight prayers fomo fomo.
Back to the topic,if the dancing queens are paid peanuts for entertaining the president ,who much will they get working for the Indians and them chinese? I hope H.E daz not sleep during the meetings,

  23. ya ok they r comming to zambia but it will be like ZAMBIAN AIRWAYS where by i said on this net about some indians who have been stealing from zambia for years and you still see the same faces and there nothing the goverment can do i did give the names of these people and it is a shame to see such peopl can do this to us here are the names once more YUSUF ZUMULA , cought in several thefts from goverment ,getting money from DBZ and building his house and sending his kids to schools abroad ,
2 SOLLY ROCKET cought exporting ivory and swending ZAMBIA AIRWAYS out of several thousande of US$
3 YUSAF MUSA of MUSA BAKERY killing people in lusaka , extision from indians , interfering in goverment:)>-

  24. The whole world is interested in putting their mouths where the money is at the momment. We need to be very selective, Mr. President.

  25. 33. your flag spring chicken , on “#29 and #30 good to see you two, where is Anoymous? I think you three had a nice overnight prayers fomo fomo.” Good to see your comment too! I am glad you and me are still alive.
Please, take care and keep well.
On “Back to the topic,if the dancing queens are paid peanuts for entertaining the president ,who much will they get working for the Indians and them chinese? I hope H.E daz not sleep during the meetings,” interesting indeed.
I dislike this issue of dancing women for a fellow human being. Even though this is tradition, just imagine the likes of Brit. Spears and JLo dancing for a US President at the Airport whenever he is going somewhere?

  26. chinese and indians are famous for overworking wokers, paying them low wages, and trying to get the highest possible profit from the lowest possible cost, plus ridiclulous safety standards at work places(or maybe you’ve already forgotten about the coal mines in southern province.).i wouldn’t sell any of these guys a sewage tank! :-l:-l:-l

  27. The Americans through President Nixon and the British through Prime Minister Gordon Brown (while Chancellor) long recognised the importance of China and more recently, both US and European countries have recognised India as well. In Africa we would do well to cast off our stereotyping of these people and learn to do business with them. However, we must be careful with the contracts we sign that we do not cause problems for our people. These countries need our resources for their hungry industries and we need their money.

  28. Please don’t sell our country once again, we will hold you accountable for all your decisions. God bless Zambia.

  29. Many people invest in other countries for economic gains. Very few Zambians have investment outside this country and thus we least expect revenue from our foreign investment. When can we think of investing in strong economic countries so that we also gain from the profits that we can externalize back to Zambia! Why are we the receiving end of investments and not export our investments to other countries. Why do we feel inadequate? But I know we think about and how we utilize our resources. Whatever is available eat it first and think later. Every one , especially politicians, they are there only for their personal gains. This is wrong. Come out of the box, think of Zambia and its development.

  30. #32 Reuben Muzeya
You`ve raised a very good point about setting up an investment fund by people in the diaspora to be chanelled into profitable ventures in Zambia. One good investment opportunity would be the same mines these short sighted investors have abandoned.Even though Copper is currently trading low,it`s just a matter of time before the trend is reversed. The US stimulus package`s focal point is infrastructure development and copper happens to be a cardinal ingredient in such gigantic projects. In a nutshell, the demand for copper will shoot back up and only savy investors will be positioned to cash in big time.

  31. :((:((:((:(( There is nothing wrong with chinnise and Indians,we simply have wrong ,policies…..Period.Chinnese and Indians are everywhere.Talk about the USA,UK,Germany ,South africa you will find the chocholis.Lets revisit our labour policies and come up with perhaps minimum wage for our fellow countrymen and women.

  32. Reuben Muzeya,Welcome back to U K from Zambia .I wish many Zambians could reason and act the way you do.

Continue your project in Batoka and wish it could grow into a very big business to support and service many Hotels in the country.

  33. Please not Indians and Chinese again! Look at what some Indians did with Luanshya mine! If they have to come, the government needs to supervise them or pass good laws to protect Zambia.

KCM might go down the same way …. especially after they have made enough money, then they just systematically pack and go!

    Ofcourse not all Indians but…..

  34. Well RB and his government are the only people who are happy to have Chinese, Indians and Nigerian investores in Zambia. The rest of us, who are not listerned to, would prefer prominent investors who have respect for humanity.

Who cares RB and his Crew are rich and getting even richer while the entire country is drowning in poverty, absolutely not RB’s cup of tea. RB cannot be bothered as far as he is concerned he is bringing in investors, what type? none of RB’s business. RB ‘s compound is safe in his village. :)):)):)):)):)):)):)):)):)):)):))**==

  35. It is unfortunate that our country cant find reliable investers. The only investers that Zambia delights in are Chinese and Indians. These are the very Characters who enslave our fellow Zambians. The chinese have been caught on a number of occasions trying to steal copper. These are not the kind of investors who should excite people.RB you are talking of united states of africa? ha do you what that means.Thats a hot issue Mudala wandi.

  36. PF president Michael Sata yesterday described President Rupiah Banda’s speech during the opening of Parliament as the worst address made by a president in the last 44 years.

  37. #40, :((:((:((:((:((:(( I am tired of people blaming my husband all the time, he is not alone in decision making there are lots of other heads involved, they are failing my husband, they really are. EMPTY PEOPLE. Sorry to speak.

  38. Ba Mwenye eeh elo lwanya,#36 Its not about being recists but the experience that we have with these People, just look at the current senario of the working conditions at KCM and any other Mines under the control of these dweebs, you will be scared to the bone to even give them an inch in the mining sector because of how they will treat the Zedians who are making them rich!!!
Only hope this investment will come at a time when we have signed an agreement on the conditions of service.
    I fear for Zambia

  39. #53.its beats me as well how our Government officials fail in the area of negotiations, maybe its time we brought in Image builders for our investment as well.
    Stay blessed

  40. I have a quetion, what did i see on the previous topic? 385 comments but if you check wether those comments were in line with the topic. You will really wonder as to what is happening.Because what i know is that LT writes # of comments on the topic not out of topic.Shampungu Banton ati shani boyi.Wa chi mupela ama points, ena achi la bwata bwata fye no point whatsoever.

  41. The Zambia First Investment Fund is in the process of being registered. Twanyanya nasho inkulungwe shalya umwaka umo.

  42. Who is the economic adviser to RB? Dont we have people in Zambia with experience in Investment management and Capital markets? The issue is not about investors; its about the calibre of those investors and more importantly the government regulations that will govern these investors.

  43. The results are that Shampungu Banton scored a lot of points. He is a man indeed, even his grammar was supirior to that of a villager. There fore am here to declare Shampungu as a true winner. One of the few powerfull brains that LT has.

  44. Hallo ba Chewe, welcome back, mudala wandi! I knew you were strong and would not cave in to some offensive comments here. Let’s continue where we stopped inspiring each other…:)>-

  45. We’ve seen the Asians failing to adhere to safety in some mines, giving out peanuts to the poor miners. How much more of this rubbish can we take? RB, firstly you have to impose conditions before they come up with their terms. Some of these so called investors are poorer than some prominent Zambian businessmen. You fear to dictate your terms to them, why, because they’re foreigners? You need to safeguard your interests as a nation before signing any agreements. Can you get active RB, your term has begun. Get your act together, the world is moving fast. We don’t need corroded UNIP mentalities in government. If you are incompetent, leave the spot and let some fresh minds take up the challenge.

  46. Hmm! Chewe you have really become so expensive. How would let someone make you give up your passion of blogging. Please Chewe forget what happened with …….. and move on and continue what you do best. Please napata come back on the blog.

  47. RB should be encoraging local zambians to invest in the mining sector there a lot of zambians with stinky money here is the uk and america but we r looked at as second best look at nigeria

  48. No 67 No Way wrote: “We’ve seen the Asians failing to adhere to safety in some mines, giving out peanuts to the poor miners. ”

This is unhelpful. We should not get fixated with pinning labels on different races or nationalities for our failings. What we have seen in the past is a failure to draft, enact and enforce sensible employment and welfare laws. There are plenty of black Zambians who are equally guilty of maltreating workers. The idea that this is the preserve of the Chinese or Asian communities in Zambia is a fallacy. We would do well to adopt a more mature attitude to debates for the country to make economic progress in the future.

  49. #58, Ba Chewe welcome back,
Mwalileka Martworld asabaila ichalo chonse ne mbafu chikanga shilepauke..

Nice to hear your nice tone.

    benze bana kukalipisa maningi….

Continue your natural mature blogging and shame the devils… =d>=d>=d>

  51. When will this culture of party cadres dancing for the president at the airport end? Shame on these mothers in the picture and even more shame to the Presidents & their minows who encourage this achiac behaviour!!!

  52. People should realise that the power of the world is going East whether you like it or not. You can not prefer bazungu over amwenye na achinese especially given what they have done to us in the past. Bazungu balibe ndalama lomba because of the unbridled capitalism they espoused. What we need to do is let these people come in but make sure that they add value to whatever it is they will be mining so that we get more money for it. Also we need to have a comprehensive programme of industrialisation so that the resources we have also go into building our own manufacturing bases. I dont think Zambia can do that alone that is why I believe in a United States of Africa.

  53. It is DISGUSTING TO SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING! Why are these women singing for the president all day instead of looking for something worth doing and bringing food and giving education to their children at home? It is time our leaders stop politicing every move that a president makes. Getting on a plane on Govt Duty is for all zambians regardless of Political Affiliation. Stop that practice, and go do something worth your time. Are we at a stage of political maturity or we are showing our ignorance?

  54. #50 Please how can someone invest $1.5bn in a new Smelter and mine and only leave within a short space of time. Man I know how shallow Zambian bloggers are but your analysis is really way-off.

  55. Those are the positive developments we need.
Now the government should be very tactful in handling all mining investors.
We need to maximise our earnings from these mines.
The question does not only lie in raising the royalties.
I believe the government has to think a little deeper.
Mines are normally labour intensive and therefore the need to view earnings from that angle.
Govt must insure that these mines pay workers reasonable wages, and the the minimum wage should be beneficial to govt too.
In this, I mean that govt can earn more through PAYE than royalties by balancing the equations well. It will not help to have majority of workers get below non-taxable wage.

  56. YEAH, ASIAN INVESTORS WILL DO AS THEY DID IN LUANSHYA AND SALT AWAY $455 MILLION IN PROFITS TO THE UK….OR ABROAD!!! WHAT DID WE GET IN RETURN, A FEW TRUCKLOADS OF GRAVEL IN THE ZAMBIAN POLICE YARD IN LUANSHYA!!! THEY WILL EMPLOY THEIR OWN NATIONALS IN THE SENIOR JOBS, WHILE ZAMBIANS LANGUISH IN THE TOWNSHIPS. ZAMBIANS WILL NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THE MINES’ FINANCIAL DATA. THEY WILL FLOUT ALL CONCEIVABLE MINING REGUALTIONS. THEY WILL POLLUTE LEFT, RIGHT AND CENTRE

  57. i dont think RB knows what is rightful for Zambia or his family?why only cheap guys from asia with their cheap labour???please think before you say anything!!!

  58. You guys dont level the playing field with local investors. You give precedence to light skinned people and put your like last. What the duece is wrong with you guys?

  59. #85. wiseman
I hope that you are aware that most of the manufacturing ranging from clothing to electronics today is done in China for US, Canada and Europe. Most of the medicines for Europe today are outsourced in India for European brands.
I dont think that we can be the only ones to despise chinese and indian investment when we import even tooth picks

  60. I was just thinking and thought this would be great when posted here for a comment by others. How much money does GRZ spend just to see off President RB Banda from and also welcome him back to home (State House, Lusaka, as the man travels often to different parts of the country and Earth) when he uses an aeroplane through any airport?

If there is any money that is used, I think that money can be used for a better service sayin education or health to prevent Cholera cases.

  61. #85 why do you even call yourself wiseman when you are one hell of ka ignorant chap.
Bushe ta wishibe nomba ati mwenye no mu china abalechimfya kubuyantanshi that even americans and brits are falling over their feets just to get investments from these two countries. And mwana as long as you wont equip your children with a qualification to compete on the labour market they will end up as cheap labourers no two ways about it.even in america or britain how much do your folks who dig trenches and wash dishes get.how many dirty jobs do they have to do to earn a living.so mwana chinese and indian investors are good for zambia because they are better than us in all areas.if you were running away

  62. contd- if you were running away from school or mistaking the teacher for a clown when he was busy teaching.ni cheap labourer batata
