Second Republican President Frederick Chiluba Wednesday wept in court as he testified in a case where he is charged with plunder of national resources.
Dr. Chiluba lamented that members of his family no longer walk with their heads held high because of the theft allegations leveled against him.
He also said he was saddened that he has been subjected to ridicule and derogatory editorial comments in the Post Newspaper.
Dr. Chiluba said he was denied natural justice when parliament endorsed that his immunity be lifted, without being summoned to exculpate himself.
He however said parliament was careful as it only removed his immunity with regards to the offences he committed in his personal capacity.
Dr. Chiluba also told the court that he felt betrayed that late president Levy Mwanawasa the man he helped to ascend to power leveled false allegations against him.
He denied having stolen $47 million which was raised from the Luanshya Copper mine.
Dr. Chiluba testified that of the figure $35 million was in the safe custody of Zambia Consolidated Copper Mine (ZCCM) while $12 million went to the receivers Grant Thornton.
The former president is jointly charged with former directors of the Defunct Access Financial Service Aaron Chungu and Faustin Kabwe.

The US$12 million payment to Grant Thornton certainly is not reasonable. Can HH and Chiluba give the nation more details? The fact that Chiluba has not disclosed which people was sending money to Zamtrop account does not help matters. It is possible that Grant Thornton ended up paying back some of this money to Zamtrop for personal use by Chiluba. HH has a lot to answer for, in addition to this US$12 million that they received, Grant Thornton were also auditors for ZANACO were the Zamtrop account was maintained. HH therefore knew what was going on in Zamprop account at ZANACO, if he did not know then how then was Grant Thornton certifying ZANACO financial statement?

The US$12 million explains why HH will never attack FTJ. For your information, what FTJ used to do was that if he gave you a contract to do some work on behalf of Govt, Govt will over pay you, then share the excess with FTJ (nchekeleko). There is no garantee that if Grant Thorton did not win the bid the bid could not have been given to a foreign accounting firm with the same conditions.May be Grant Thorton was the cheapest. Iam surprised at your ignorance about the origin of all these cases against Chiluba. It was the post that started calling him THIEF before government started the prosecution. The POST has since dared ka Chiluba to take them to court and surprisingly he hasn’t. When Chiluba took HH to court for calling him a thief and comparing him to a monkey Chiluba was swift to tak legal action. The POST once again challenged him if he could take them to court since have always called him a thief, Chiluba once again surprisingly shied away. Oh president Chiluba.My heart goes out to you.Its actually a shame that you should resort to crying as a way of exculpating yourself..I do feel that you do owe it to Zambians though to expalain.On the whole I am personally getting tred of these prolonged cases.Its about time Chiluba was either charged or let go.Chiluba’s case should save as a lesson to all of us who offer any service to others.What about a plea bargain at this stage?Is it too late, perhaps?
