RB goes on working retreat

President Rupiah Banda is tomorrow beginning a one week long working retreat, which he will take at Hippo Lodge in Kafue National Park.

While on his retreat, President Banda will hold meetings with various government and non governmental institutions, including the Zambia Congress of Trade Union (ZCTU) and some members of the church.

President Banda will also hold strategic planning sessions with his key aides and other senior government officials on various issues concerning the running of government.

The President is expected to conclude his retreat and return to Lusaka on Monday next week.

This contained in a statement released by Special Assistant to the President for press and public relations, Dickson Jere this evening.

Meanwhile, President Rupiah Banda and Beatitudt Theodoros II , the Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and all Africa of the Orthodox  Church  this afternoon held private talks at State House.

Beatitude Theodoros II, who arrived in the country last week, was accompanied by Bishops from Zambia, Malawi among other countries and Egyptian Ambassador to Zambia Tamer Mansoul.

Pope Beatitude Theodoros II, presented the Cross and Star of St. Mark the Apostle and evangelist to President Banda.

The Cross and the Star are the highest decorations that are given to Heads of States only.

Speaking through his interpreter, the Pope said he was happy to see the economic progress that the country has recorded over the years.

The Church leader, who last visited Zambia some 15 years ago, is in the country for pastoral   and the inauguration of charity work.

He said the church is supporting Charity work in Kanyama adding that it would extend the work to Kitwe and Ndola.

He has since invited President Banda to visit the Church based in Alexandria City in Egypt when he visits that country.

And President Banda said he was honoured to receive the cross on behalf of the Zambians.

He has been running from one country to another for celebrations that have nothing to do with the development of our country, and already the man needs the so called working holiday! This was really a poor choice on our part, and the whole nation is paying for the wrong choice. Probably the nation needs to demonstrate so as to try and squeeze RB just a bit, or at least to wake him from his deep slumber!

  8. After a hard day’s of work,the night gives us an opportunity to take rest and relax. Thus, our batteries are re-charged and we are ready for the challenges of the next day.

  13. I was reading old posts on here before Mwanawasa died and I noticed Mwanawasa was subjected to the same virulent constant barrage of hatred.. Am I right to assume zambians are just a bunch of complainers who will never say anything nice about a leader unless they are either dead or been out of office for 20 plus years? Am no RB fan but sometimes the hate towards the man is very disproportinaite. RB can be reported scratching his folded skull and I guarantee there will be 50 plus replies on why he is doing that and he should focus on something else instead of scratching. Anyway carry on

I believe that it was Mulongoti who said that after RB won the presidential elections, they would send the President off on holiday while ‘they sorted’ out national issues (I am subject to correction here). So we should not be surprised that RB has become so used to the idea of holidays that he takes them on a whim. This is Bwezani’s true character and I believe that this is a lesson for us all. In 2011, if RB is re-elected (because he will contest the elections), then we have only ourselves to blame as a country. If we make a bed of thorns then we must learn to sleep in it.

There’s a lot of empty talk coming from his ministers under him and they are misleading the people. They need his guidance and he can’t offer it to them if he’s always away from the office.

If the man is too tired to work for 6 months what makes you think he can work for the next 2 years! The man just came back from South why cant he do a lil work before he takes his retreat. The economy is down, jobs are being lost, people are dying in hospitals coz of lack of medication, why can the man address all these problems like his fellow presidents who are busy trying their best to revive their economies? Don’t get me wrong am not saying our president doesn’t have to go on retreat, but he should do it at a time when we all can see that he deserves it.   21. Contd: I was disappointed today to find that the Zambian high commission in Canada employs people who are not Zambians to work their. I went to pick up my passport forms for the renewal of my passport only to be welcomed and helped by a lady who is not Zambian. After everything was done i decided to ask her for her nationality, the lady is Caribbean! There so many Zambians looking for employment here in Canada and most of them cannot find jobs and here we are letting foreigners work at our embassies when we have capable people who can do those jobs. How many girls are in Canada that are looking for employment that can do a job of a receptionist. And am sure since the embassy is as good as the government those people are being paid expatriate salaries.

  30. No# 11 Less talk, yes a church retreat is like a holiday. In this place we actually go to a camp site with a lake, food in abundance and the wide open spaces. there is prayer though and worshiping God, which should be done always. But going to a lodge is a vacation period.

The President need interruption free environment to digress, debate, review and re-frame his game plan with his policy aides. Zambia needs young blood, new ideas, people with the energy and hunger to thrive in an ever changing and advancing world, while preserving the traditional ways. Zambia embassies deserve the people they hire because I for one do not even want to work for them, they can not even renovate the places. remember embassies are a reflection of the actual country in a foreign land.   67. Holidays are a statutory right. But this is not a holiday, it is a change of office. Many people invited to meet the President feel intimidated if he met them at State House… you know the aura of that place. So, a reasonable man that RB is, he will meet them in the ambience of relaxation. Isn’t that cool? Sata refused to meet LPM in State House until he had a brush with mortality. If you have been to State House to meet the President you will understand how intimidating the situation is.

  69. #81 If you grew up on the CB like I did, you will remember our parents selling inshiku (ukushoitisha inshiku). They would extra money alright but it meant they would go for 1-2 years without a holiday-doing nothing but the same job! What used to happen is when one reached the retirement age, they were worn out. He goes kumushi only to die after about a year or so, and yes as is the case, balimulowa used to be the conclusion. Learn to plan your lives Zambians. Include a holiday in your calender year. Make sure you chill and keep away from work for 2 weeks in every 3 months. It`s good for your health. Leave the man alone. Hardly had these companies begun to make profit on their investment than the crisis came upon them. The source of funding has dried out, albeit, for the present. Employment corresponds to output. You cannot keep people in employment if they are not producing anything. China is the ONLY country in the world that can fund fresh projects! Imagine now if Sata had been President….

    Let us look at the facts. 1. Until March 2009, the MMD government was operating on Magande’s budget.. It is illegal to do anything outside the budget. This budget was given long before the global crisis came. RB has been in office since November on someone else’s terms, including cabinet. 2. RB’s budget has only come into effect in March/April and the funding for it has just been approved. So wait for the govt. money to start working. 3. He has secured the future of Luanshya mine. Look at posting 88.
    4. A foundation must be laid for any sustainable project. Rome was not built in a day.

    You have it right concerning Zambian Mission offices abroad. One Lt Colonel got into trouble trying to sort out the Cairo offices sometime ago.
    But on Zimbabwe, I do not agree. We are helping the people of Zimbabwe not the leaders. Munzako akapya ndevu, umuzimize. M’mawa azazimya zako. (One good turn deserves another). It is in our blood as Africans to help our neighbours even when we do not have enough for ourselves. That is commendable. God also agrees and says that He loves a cheerful giver. For it is more blessed to give than to receive. We have sown a seed and one day we will reap a great harvest. If we hadn’t helped the freedom fight in southern Africa we would have lost evrything by now and would have been second class citizens.

The president doesn’t really have a holiday. even when he says he is on holiday he still works! But the kind of comments coming from the so called educated people leaves much to be desired. The UK PM goes to Checkers for a retreat, US President goes to Camp David almost every weekend. So why can’t RB go to any of our wonderful lodges for a retreat? He will still be working right? The case for retreats may be just that for RB, but I do not agree that Obama is at Camp David nearly every weekend, if anything, he has only been there once since he assumed office and other than that, you literally see and feel that he is doing his best to address the concerns of US citizens in this time of crisis. Unfortunately, the majority of Zambians cannot say the same about Bwezani.

    You are nostalgic about the remnants of colonialism. The facilities you are talking about were not built by ZCCM but Roan Select Trust and Anglo American. They have been on the downgrade for over 30 years. Look up the Northern Rhodesians and join them. They have a web site dedicated to reminiscing about their good times in Northern Rhodesia and pre 1970 Zambia when they rode upon the African backs and enjoyed leisure while our mothers nannied their babies. It was good though… when the black man stepped into the shoes!

    Unlike you and me, a President is NEVER on holiday. The only time he signs off to his deputy is when he is out of the country or indisposed. A retreat is not a holiday either. It is just a time to concetrate on fewre than normal number of issues. The only thing that the President does not do when he is away from State House is to chair the cabinet meeting or meet diplomats for accreditation. Otherwise it is business as usual.

  132. #174 Saint, while I agree that a retreat is not a holiday and Mr. Bwezani is actually entitled to these expeditions, my main contention is that the majority of citizens do not feel that this man is actually working! Take the case of Mwanawasa after the maize prices declined, the man openly stated to the country that he felt that he could then go on holiday because he had done something tangible. A retreat, working holiday, call it whatever you like, Zambians perceptions about RB’s hiatus would be viewed in a different light if he could actually show the country some tangible results of his time in office.
