Mwaata Day High School authorities in Kalomo have expressed worry over the increasing rate of pregnancies and abortions being recorded at the learning institution.
School Headteacher, Benson Hachoombe said in an interview that an average of 10 female pupils fail to report for school at the start of every new term due to either induced abortions or pregnancy.
Mr Hachoombe has since appealed to guardians to assist the school administration to impart good morals in the children to avoid such incidents.
“There is a growing concern especially with girls. The issue of pregnancies and abortions has become common, there is little that the school can do to prevent the vice unless parents are highly involved. Children are mostly living in rented rooms on their own and as a day school control is very difficult,” he said.
The school has a large number of its pupils renting apartments in the surrounding areas while a small fraction is staying with relatives.
The setup is said to have resulted in undesirable behavior among some pupils who have involved themselves in illicit practices such as unprotected sex and patronising beer houses.

Mr. Benson Hachoobe that problem will not come to an end now. The girls have become easy targets for guys as they are living in rented houses and there is no proper control of their conduct after knocking off. I am sure the Tonga bulls in that area are in hot pursuit of the young ones. My suggestion is Hon. Muntanga, Ben Hachoobe , Headmaster and all stakeholders should convern an emergency meeting and use Constituency Development Fund to construct a Hostel for girls for easy control and monitoring movements. Failure to react to such a problem will result in ruining the future of girl child. They dont not see wrong in what they involving themselves in as they are young. 10 girls per term is bad picture. These are problems which nid to looked into befrore turning pri schs into high schools.
This is what happens when you allow kids to leave by themselves, there is no control . I went to a boarding school , dispite have purnishment if caught wondering outside the school gates, we used to go for it, so how do you expect the kids to look after themselves? Bring back the Domitaries or hostels.
This is what we should expect in the country where “SEX HAS BECOME A DOMINANT VALUE” condoms are being given to every one old or young in the name of preventing the spread of HIV. LISTEN to the so called modern zambian music ….full of nothing but sex related insults. Really, every age has a dominant ideal and a dominant failure. We have completly failed on moral issues as a “christian nation”
Poverty levels are the sources of such vices. There is no positive relation with the econmical development and population increase. I even wonder if the Zambia has 12m people. Tgap is richer >poor. That shool is for the poor. Take closeer at look teachers appearance will talk more than this, they are also involved but I do not blamethem, its poverty again. Poverty inflicted by those in power the rich.
#3 Right on. I only hope we won’t have some organization rush to Kalomo and boast of “successfully distributing 22000 condomz” az a meanz of controlling the spread of HIV and AIDS!
Children are mostly living in rented rooms on their own, this is madness, so if they get pregnant, you start to ask questions when the obvious reasons are staring at you. Get the kids out of those rooms and build more doms. May be the teachers are the one responsible .
Sounds like legalised perversion. That’s not a proper school. Can you send your daughter there. Build domitories to protect the girls.
10 preganancies / abortions impliy there’s an awful lot of sex going on. Please test the community for HIV/AIDS.
