The Copperbelt University (CBU) has been closed with immediate effect to restore calm at the institution following a spate of violent demonstrations in the last two weeks.

CBU Acting Registrar, Mwala Sheba in a statement to ZANIS in Kitwe today said a special senate meeting which sat this morning resolved to close the institution for two weeks with immediate effect.

Mr Sheba said the action was aimed at allowing the university management enough time to restore calm to ensure public safety.

On Wednesday evening the students battered a Guinean businessman, Mamadi Conde, 76 and stole K200 million from him.

They also set ablaze his Totota Hilux Surf and made off with Cell Phones, Money and other business documents.

The students have been demonstrating over the shooting of their colleague by Police and the appointment of Dora Siliya as Education Minister.

  1. Closed universities equals closed education, leading to arrested development. More corruption and more poverty will be the results. What a vicious cycle (Teufelskreis)!

  2. This is a sad development indeed. The cycle is starting from the top, RB and slowly tickling down until it reaches the poor man in the compound.Zambians wake up. Thankss no.2

  3. Those are thieves not students, its shameful that the can resort to stealing to show that they do not like Dora, they dont deserve to be in school in the first place it seams jail is the best place for some of them

  4. Student behavior of this kind has to stop. It is a shame that now we have students who don’t care about human life. When that institution was ZIT, we never experienced this kind of riotious behavior. I was a ZIT student and executive member of the student union. The students we had at the time were disciplined, they believed in having dialog with the administrators to get issues resolved. I have no sympathy for those who will be found with a case to answer over the incidence that just happened.

  5. it has always been a wrong move to stone cars but it has been done with no reports of stealing monies or property. I wonder if for sure this man had that amounts in his vehicle or just trying to get compensation from govt to get another SURF

  6. Closure is not solution.. ofcourse what transpared is very unfortunate. However resorting to closures is very retrogressive . And its a lie that that guy had 200 million stolen from him. Its a very black lie by this west african.

  7. Dora cited as one of the reasons for the uprising??

Education in Zambia is always mixed with dirty politics…….

  8. I agree with “DEVELPOER’’ the era of rioting and burning cars to get you point across is over. What started out as a peaceful demonstration against a student being shot and Dora Siliya, has ended in a car hijacking and robbery. If you hate Dora so much why not demonstrate in Lusaka at her offices or her home. Since you are K200 million richer am sure you can afford it.

  9. “The students have been demonstrating over the shooting of their colleague by Police and the appointment of Dora Siliya as Education Minister”

I do not think one of the reasons was the shooting of a student. It must be put that “the reason was a demo over loss of a laptop which culminated in one student being shot”. On Dora it should as “they are demanding for the removal of Dora as MOE minister, an appointment they have no control over just as they do not have a right about who has to be their Vice Chancellor”

  10. Its really depressing everytime I read about Zed. I enjoyed my summer away from boring home news only to be treated to more boring home news on return. How can students rob an innocent businessman? With this impunity on the part of students, how do you expect to attract investors if they can destroy property at will? I go to the POST only to find that Gaston Sichilima has been lynched by an old UNIP die-hard! Where are we heading as a country? There is too much political hegemony in our country.I really disappointed with the students,Its only in Zambia where students behave like that. Its time they knew its NOT normal and defaces Zed in yhe eyes of the world. We need a Good leader and unfortunately none is on the scene!Hegemony is the order of the day.SAD!!!!

  11. Ine palya kanikuli yawama elyo ama guyz bayamba ukupena. What criteria does “C.B.U” use to recruit students? I thought students were better than school pupils in terms of handling social problems. There are better methods of solving conflicts than what these guys are resorting to. Cage them!! You think you are the only students G.R.Z has?

  12. Such action intolerable! And you guys are busy claiming to be future leaders? With such behavior? Emulate the way students in the diaspora resolve their issues with their respected authorities! They have never stoned or beaten any Government official representing them no matter what their problems might be. Instead they try to resolve issues amicably. Grow up guys!

  13. what rubish?we ll never develop.the country is worst than it was in 1964.why do we vote, when the same old politicians are just circulating?kanitundila, monga awamwa.
even a monkey realised that he is useless, what about us? students shud learn to dialog. i become sick when i hear what is happening in my good country lead by bad leaders.

  14. # 14 Ba Kapembwa bakamba kakanikuli ichachine nakawama. But it’s really sad this is happening back home.# 2 Nine Chale you are right man!!

  15. Sad that the Skool has been shut. Sad that a man was almost killed, too good that part of the s t o l e n Zambian money was recovered by alert Zambians. Those West Africans are a problem on the C/belt especially in Kitwe. What business does this old man do other than selling our stones without paying taxes? Zambians behave in their countries but they misbehave in Zed. What cheeck, wanting to drive past a demonstration and ignoring Police advise. Get well soon and communicate lesson learnt to fellow illegal stone dealers.

  16. Shut it down until we find and fund real students. Not these political thugs masquerading as future leaders, and misusing (our) tax payers money.

  17. Shut down for 2 weeks? You must be joking, those thugs need to be caged for a long time. I suggest a shutdown for three years until we are sure that these thugs permanently go where they belong, street vending. But then street vendors will protest if they are joined by these thugs!

  18. Education in zambia is very pathetic. I dont know if this students are ever thought about conflict resolution and management in thier studies. Resorting to stealing or destroying somebodys properties is a long gone way of addressing your concerns and nobody can sympathasize with this criminals called university students in zambia. it would have been better if they had stolen money from Dora Siliya or RB. shame on u students

  19. But why was this Guinean businessman, Mamadi Conde moving with K200 million on his person.
Is he an investor or just one of those chaps who deal in illegally obtained emeralds?
Can the police also investigate the business dealings of this man.

  20. Its strange that pipo dont bother to find out wat really caused this riotous behaviour, a student is shot, govt does not reveal comprehensive report, Zambians re against dora. RB ignores our plea, dont compare de past to today cause we re being governed by Shit!!! Read today’s post news, just cause u cant make it to zed univ does not mean those who do re thugs, lets be polite in ventin our displeasure, students aint thugs!!

  21. Public funds are not meant to support universities that produce arsonists and terrorist but intellectually responsible citizens.Good that CBU has been shut.In a seperating system, vet and purge arsonists and terrorists from responsible hardworking students.Commit returning students to conditional contract reinstatement.let those arsonists and terrorists find their way somewhere else.Blacklist them for life from all public opportunities from Business, jobs to integration excerpt reformation centers.Realising a just society comes with responsibility.

  22. vivu ! tililili ! tililili ! anyway thats what happens when you cant beat them but join them which is just a normal reaction in human bahaviour

  23. beating up of senior citizens, whether zambian or otherwise is totally unjustified….shame on CBU, what a disgrace….why not vent your anger on another ‘buju’. CBU behave, learn from UNZA….ninshi naikosa isikulu?ku Joba fye. We also had to pass all them exams before landing them B.Min.Sc @ Yunza!Abash Senior Citizen Intimidation!

  24. The behaviour of students at CBU is uncalled for. Of all the things why attack an innocent old man who had nothing to do with ZNBC News item. In addition burning his vehicle and robbing him of cash and other valuables. And CBU union offical has courage to state that according to him the car hit into a tree and caught fire. We are fed up with riotous behaviour of students who being educted at great cost to the treasury. The University council should expel the union leaders coz they have failed to provide good leadership. Ev en the shooting of Mwape was sparked coz of bad conduct. It does not mean those chaps are the best brains in Zed. There are alot waiting for such chances. The CBU council should set tough conditions for returning students to abide by. Those chaps are criminals ZP shoot

  25. As a taxpayer and parent i fail to understand how some one pursuing higher studies will resort to barbaric behaviour. While majority of Zambians go day in day out without a decent meal these students who get bursaries and are aford at least 2 meals a day can not appreciate what is made available to them. I may be called names but I have no regrets over my statement. I have bin a student leader before. Students are supposed to be demonstrating on serious issues which are affecting the nation not just themselves. Days are gone when UNZA used to oppose GRZ policies such support for Unita, Supply of arms to RSA by France. Incease in meali meal prices. introduction of multy democracy and other serious issues. Student can bring about constructive change by engaging stakeholders constructively.

  26. Students are suppozd to be the envy and pride of society. How much money the victim had on him iz immaterial, he could have said K1000(1pin!) for all I care. The gist of the matter here iz the students’ unruly behaviour.

  27. viva monk police!!!!!!! thanks for sorting out that illegal stone dealer.where did he get the courage to challenge monk power? the emaralds these chaps are stealing are making them big headed. viva monks!! cheer up guys school opens in two weeks time. Abash political and buju(police) intimidation.

  28. #32 Uli wa fake kanshi. In this modern age you are encouraging barbaric behaviour by studenst yet they are supposed to be evy of the society. The society is investing heavily in studenst as future leaders for a better mother Zambia. I dont like hearing that UNZA/CBU has bin closed. That is suspending future development. That Senesene is just a human being like anybody else. Yes they could be plundering our precious stones but bela has bin as human history and we did not know its value until these same masenesene came on board. The bottom line let us respect other pipo’s right to life and owning property. Zambia cannot develop on its own without involvement of other pipo. Most Zambians scope yenze yakuvaliwa in terms of business but lelo bambili banaseguka scope and doing all sorts…

  29. During the riots of 1985 when I was doing my first year at the University of Zambia we burnt I think the Vice Chancellor’s Peugeot 504. The Institution was closed and we were all sent home and a few students were detained as usual. On re-opening , you were only re-admitted on payment of K250.00 (two hundred and fifty kwacha). It was a lot of monet that time. Unfortunately a few students were unable to pay and did not come back to University. If it is proven that the students stole the K200Million from the Kitwe businessman. In all fairness they all should be made to pay .This should teach then a lesson so that they hold peaceful demonstrations in future. Demonstrations are health in any democracy and can be otherwise but not targeting individuals.

  30. MAN FROM THE DEVIL ISLAND u re the devil yourself! leave students alone. u if were headboy at some school somewhere live in your old wild world. for once listern to modern students get their reasoning u will be shocked at their intellectual capabilities. viva monk power!!!!!!!!

  31. iwe DEVELOPER! go to CBU & see how deplorable the institution is..go back if you can & see how crowded students are in the rooms (female students inclusive)…how do you compare with ZIT which got proper funding from both the govt & the mines? in all fairness, ZIT should have ‘enjoyed’ the current pathetic conditions (since you guys were graduating with Crafts certificates or whatever the bull) – in your days you enjoyed free meals from a half-hotel cafeteria, lecturer-student contact was good, each student had a bed space fully furnished, etc.go there now & see what these students go through (they all come from tax-paying families by the way) while these ministers take their kids abroad. DIALOGUE IS A THING OF THE PAST IN ZED, as you can see from minister’s fights.RB IS TO BLAME 4ALL…

  32. Save us oh God, Zambia is going to the devil. Even ministers fight in public , what do you expect of students? This just reminds me of my previous habit. I had the habit of pieing outside our house with my 4yr boy looking on. Later, he started doing the same. One day her mother caught him . She scolded him. He answer but daddie does it too.

  33. MY DEARS WHY SAFER RUPIYA WONT DO ANYTHING ABOUT DORA COZ HE CLIMBS ON HER SO LET NO ONE SAY SILLY THINGS ABOUT CBU VIVA GO ON AND DISTROY THEN GET WAT RIGHTFULLY BELONGS TO YOU I WAS ONCE A STUDENT
