Zambia's First President Kenneth Kaunda

Former President, Dr Kenneth Kaunda, has said that political parties should stop inciting violence. Dr Kaunda, has said violence will never build a nation.

Speaking in an interview yesterday, Dr Kaunda said that Zambians must learn to love one another despite their political differences.

Dr Kaunda said party cadres strive for peace and try to resolve differences through violence.

“Two wrongs cannot make a right,” Dr Kaunda said.

Dr Kaunda also said it is saddening that the political parties are embroiled in a persistent conflict of words instead of expending their energies on discussing issues of national importance.

He said the general citizenry is looking up to the political parties to find answers for the country’s many economic and social problems.

Dr Kaunda also said leaders should exhibit political maturity and begin to focus on issues and strategies that will enhance economic progress.

  1. the old man should be specific. he should not generalise. if anything, he should say RB must concentrate on developmental issues intead of quarraling with the post everyday

  2. The people they want to lead are the sameones they want pushed into anarchy for their political expedience. What kind of leadership is that?

  3. UNIP was more violent when KK was in Charge.Let him just concentrate on his charities and MMD will sort itself out with the opposition.
Obviously not through violence but through political masquarading and Propaganda.

  4. #4 Makweti M you are very right and every Zambian knows it. During Kaunda’s time the lives of those who supported the opposition were in great danger at the hands of UNIP thugs, cadres, vigilantes, etc…and there were those hateful UNIP slogans which Kaunda himself enjoyed shouting. Rupiah Banda was then a UNIP cadrer and this explains why MMD is such a violent party. I wonder why Kaunda does not keep his mouth shut and stop being a hypocrite. The late Simon Kapwepwe and many others suffered at the hands of Kaunda just for having different views over national issues. Rupiah Banda is a product of violent UNIP and Kaunda knows that.

  5. The underlined words are “leaders should exhibit political maturity and begin to focus on issues and strategies that will enhance economic progress”.

  6. Senior Citizen you are an *****…………. I even wonder iwhether you are in Zambia. Don’t just hear things from your stupid friends and think that is what is happening……….. Look at how MMD cadre are going round beating journalists………….

If you are A SENSIBLE PERSON YOUR MMD HAS RULED ZAMBIA FOR 19 YEARS; POINT AT DEVELOP MMD HAS DONE?????????

  7. He said the general citizenry is looking up to the political parties to find answers for the country’s many economic and social problems.

This is a clear indication that the country IS IN SERIOUS PROBLEMS…………………

But Senior citizen and his cherished leaders can’t see that this Nation is going backwards….

  8. Men Super Ken has spoken.Get some diplomacy from his words.Don’t be embaciles by just looking behind and vigilante and the like.Look at what is happening now and what should be done to change zambia into a proud and prosperous nation. Not fighting and insulting each other:Is that what you call development?Criticize all political parties and praise where it is worth praise.Analize data and contribute positively instead of being ant–KK,anti-RB,anti-MCS&HH packed and the like.

  9. At last the BIG man has tried to speak.
Ba KK you should condemn violence at any level and as you see it.
The journalists are being beaten and you do not touch the subject.
You are supposed to be the father of the nation who should take an active interest in the wrongs being perpetuated by the rilung party eventhough you are friends with Bwezani.
Also, the deputy minister fighting in public against what you have rightly called the “general citizenry “.
We expect more from you if we have to go by examples set by former US President Carter, Clinton, etc.

  10. Sorry oldman days of intimidetions are gone; democracy demands that; the will of the people be done: Zambia has failed develope because of such threats, we demand that the will of Zambians be done; not threats if you donnot want violence, do what people want

  11. #Junior Citizen, you are right. This fool calling himself #Senior citizen must be one of the MMD thugs. His level of thinking is very low. You only need to read his comments and read what those thugs say when they are confronted, no difference in their reasoning. Senior citizen, you are worthless and so are your comments. So, spare us your most imbecilic comments. You imbecile!

  12. Dr Kaunda, Rupiah Banda is your brother-in-law. Tell him in the face instead of directing your message to faceless cadres. You know it, it is Rupiah who is inciting violence.

  13. I agree with No.16 Kwandangala when he says KK should have told RB in the face on the behaviour of MMD carders. The opposition in my view are not inciting violence. KK should diferentiate between protests and incititation of violence. MMD thugs are the violent chaps who must be stoped.

  14. Stating the obvious, sir! What you need to do is get to the root cause of this problem – which is the precedent somebody once set for 27 yearswhere the presidency is seen as an entitlement to whoever the tenant in State House is. If a solid foundation for democracy was established in th infancy of this nation, we woulnd’t be having this discussion would we?

  15. As usual ba Kaunda, a day late and a dollar short. There is nothing sensible in what ba Kaunda is saying. First, he fails to put the blame where it lies. Those in power are the ones who should lead the efforts in stopping that violence. Instead, they are the ones starting and condoning that violence. Second, it is those in power who should prove and show the nation they are focused on issues of national development; instead, they are the ones squandering the little and meager resources we have on senseless trips and escapades at every excuse even in the face of a dire economic crisis.

  16. CONT’D…Dr. Kaunda, what makes sense to you: A student shot by police languishing in hospital without treatment or evacuating Tetamashimba to a hospital in South Africa because he bruises his lips kissing Rupiah’s fat A.S.S? Don’t be hypocritical old man. You have been silent all this time as if nothing has been happening in the country and then you choose to come out with this rub.b.is.h!! We expect wise counsel from you; not this half-hearted biased cra.p!

  17. CONT’D…Are you so biased you are incapable of calling a spade a spade? Rupi.ah has failed as a leader; and you refuse to acknowledge that fact. He is the one busy insulting others instead of thinking about how he is going to lead the country out of the mess it is in. He is presiding over what is likely to be the most corrupt, violent, incompetent government (even beating yours), that Zambian has ever seen, and yet you want to hide behind the “political parties” excuse. It’s lame!!

  18. It’s hard to comprehend that Dr. Kaunda can today have the cahones say “cadres strive for peace”, when all history shows the contrary. Starting with his William Banda, through Chiluba’s Nakawala, and yes, including Sata’s panga-weilding sycophants and now Banda’s MMD thugs, what peace have cadres been known to strive for Dr Kaunda? Are you serious? Wasn’t it political thugs masquerading as party cadres that made an attempt on your own life? Who do you imagine took away your son’s life if it wasn’t so-called party cadres carrying out orders from their “political party” leaders? Remember the ones you used to call “scared little men?”

  19. KK, old man, you preached non-violence during the UNIP era but tolerated violence by your cadres when they beat those of us who did not belong to your party at the time. “It pays to belong to UNIP” was the slogan of your party.

UNIP laid the seeds of the violence you are witnessing to day. Violence is bad and I also condemn it, but we have do a lot more that empty words. Root cause? POVERTY!!!

  20. Can Dr. Kaunda tell us what he did about the beating the late Mr. Kapwepwe received at the hands of UNIP vigilantes at Kamwala market? Can he also tell us what he did about the same vigilantes who used to harass people if they did not have voters’ cards? Those same cadres would stop people from going into markets or getting on mini buses if they did not have voters’ cards. Actually ba Kaunda owes the people of Zambia a big apology for the hell he put them through.

  21. Yes, Dr.Kaunda, those “scared little men” are back! And rup iah banda is doing everything in his temporarty power to see to it that they are absolved of all their past sins and illegal activities so that they can show him too how to commit political suicide. But like you before them, they will fail. Llike moths to fire; politicians never learn from the past or from their own mistakes. Chiluba didn’t; Mwanawasa didn’t; and clearly you did not. So, why should I believe Banda will? He will learn, like all of you before him, only when it’s too late! Like you so fondly loved to say: “that animal in man – greed” will eventually bring him down too. Epo mpelele!

  22. Am wondering why KK fails to advise RB. RB is not a person who reads diplomace. Just face him bwana KK. RB wont reposes your house.

  23. Sata ofcourse has no violent tendencies according to some. MMD thugs beat up journalists and are now facing the full wrath of the law. RB criticised the beating as soon as it happened. Sata did not criticise those thugs that beat up fellow PF members. Remember the two women PF fighting outside parliament? So I think that KK as an elder statesman is right to speak to all parties because they are all guilty of this scourge. All parties have to clean their houses for the good of the country. As for some of you supporting Kapwepwe, some of us who are not from Lubemba do not mourn him because to us he was a tribalist. If we want to build the country, then lets deify individuals that did not promote division in the country.

  24. Thank you very much your Excellency (Dr KK) for the wise words. Please, Zambia needs your guidance. May the Lord God richly bless you KK.

  25. KK IS TALKING FROM EXPERIENCE, IT WAS WHEN HIS CADRES STARTED TAKING THE LAW IN THEIR HANDS AND SINGING THEIR UNPOPULAR SONG ‘” KABILI UBIKEPO NE FIKANSA ULEIMA BY AIR” THAT HE BEGAN TO LOSE POPULARITY. SO I HOPE RB GETS THE MESSAGE.

  26. It is a shame the way politians run this country. MMD has recruited thugs for cadres everywhere in Lusaka. Ask Molongotitititi about his cadres in guarden. They will deliver any command issued to them for a few beers. Yes thats the level at which a poor Zambian has been reduced too, a violent machine. If we dont raise up against such people, we will soon be scared of your own children. They will kill us and even these very people that have built them. That the oposition is getting dirty too is a shame. I hope young men like HH will see behond their nose just as KK did at there age. For such men are the hope for this failed beutiful country. Oh! how I wish Mwanawasa was for like KK, he rule with his heart. Do you will want your names to be hated like is Chiluba even after being President.

  27. #1, Senior Citizen:

I think you could do better with your reasoning if only you can, for a second, stand back and look at issues as an independent observer. Most of your comments are so predictable to a point that one can just mention your name on any subject and know exactly what your opinion/comments gonna be. Your hatred for anybody & anything “none-MMD” is really clouding up your judgement—-what a shame!!!!!!

KK has a point. His past mistakes not withstanding, only a fool can disregard his timely advise. If we are not careful, this thing we call “Zambian democracy” will blow up in our faces!!!

  28. # 34 is right. Look at KK’s advice not what he did many years ago. At that time most African states had embraced socialism. Most African Presidents had to be shot out power but he peacefully conceded when he lost the election to FTJ. Despite his record the man has heart. Remember even Mandela was once labeled a terrorist.

  29. The precedent was set over a 27 year period when somebody thought they owned title deeds to State House. Whether we like it or not, this violence stems from a poor foundation in the fundamentals of a nation. Asking political parties to stop inciting violence, while a very worthy cause, does not change the cadre mentality enforced so many years ago. Tili pamodzi tiyende pamodzi ndi mutima umo!!

  30. Sibamvela bonse chabe. They are ALL like binge drunk teenagers. I do not understand why those who already have the power have to engage in answering back all the time and engage in violence as well. It is sad. I had great hopes that RB would resist personality politics when he was campaigning, but he has been dragged down into the gutter with them. Sata is a komboni thug and now he has married HH and made him a little Al Capone too. Their wealth just made them a wealthy thugs. Mazoka would never have behaved like this.

  31. In the Democratic West, they only stopped fighting a few hundred years ago. But surely this is no excuse. We do not need 1000 years of Magna Carta to be democratic.

  32. There has been a progressive extension of the franchise to different groups of people from time to time. Women only started voting in UK in the 1920s and that was for a higher age than men. Prior to that only men who owned property could vote at one time. The age was also higher than it is today. If people are given something on a silver plate, they tend not to value it. Black South Africans value the franchise because they were denied it for a very long time and they had to take up arms to get it. The great majority of Zambians have no real experience of being dis-enfranchised. Should we perhaps restrict suffrage to those who make positive contribution to the economy? What do bloggers think?

  33. K.K. Wamuyaya has forgoten,

You have to intimidate others, in order to rule. It is the cold had fact, that those in power, seem to forget. And Kaunda has forgoten where he comes from. R.B is just being another Kaunda, and there is nothing wrong with it. UNIP was in power forever then, and now MMD is eternal. Zambians, will just have to bite the bullet. UNIP was power, u wakana ponona.
K.K. knows it, unless he has opted to become a Morom

  34. The post have a more intelligent report on this! This one by LT is half baked, if it was a test the journalist at The Post would score 97%, this one would get 45%.

  35. Bloggers update me, who won the fight between Sichilima and the Unip cadre?

Violence only bleeds violence.Dr Kaunda has every right to condemn.People can recall the past and learn from it.Instead of learning from the past others are trying the past to justify the present.Resentment and vegence will only bring more violence.Believe me we all have our basic instincts.Rwandas or conglese are not inherently violent. It takes a certain of behavior that triggers that deadly instict of a human being to injure another human. What we say or do may to mean nothing but they can actually incite a group to do bad things.Remeber that radio In rwanda that filled the airwaves with Hutu power.By the way the presenter is in for life. All you Zambians condem violence at all level ,

  36. #1 SC. Ask yourself. Did KK condemn the violence perpetrated by his vigilantes? Did he condemn the beating of his former VP by Unip hoodlums? The man is on the side of RB and am sure he is refering to the opposition

  37. Everyone with no regards for KK should shut up. You’re obviously hanunted by your own ghosts from the past
The wise man has spoken and this is a message meant for all politicians in the current political era who are busy fighting each other. So what if there was terror during the UNIP regime? That regime is long gone. Let go of yesterday and focus on what’s in front of you right now and the future. If he was specific, he’d have pointed a finger at someone but he did what the wise always do, look at the scenario from all angles and comment when the time is right address all stakeholders involved

  38. Words of wisdom indeed ! Last sunday I was watching BTV ( I usually watch it)and was encouraged to see Batswana President Lft Gen Ian Khama attending an opposition rally. He sat there calmly as the opposition parliamentary candidate acknowldeged his presence and kept presenting his manifesto. When the Presido decided to leave he shook hands with most of the people present at that rally (opposition members) they bade him farewell happily ! I was just thinking to myself can this happen here ,with this political atmosphere in our beautiful country, so called beacon of peace? i didnt realised Bots democracy was that advanced.

  39. #47, no hope, bashi mwana for Zambia!! To offer a way out of slave culture and the box existence is a daunting task. It would be easy to advocate rebellion such as violent acts against figurative pigs whose society ensures they are allowed to own vast wealth, while suffering and deprivation rage on. However, such a solution has limited appeal or rational basis, if we consider that bloodshed and the taking of lives is exactly what must be eradicated, and is what the state was founded upon and relies upon.

  40. #47 and 48. Botswan started off very well. Remember even after independence they remained under Britain for some years until they had fully learned the ropes. Also all the Presidents they have had are of solid backgrounds and bona fide citizens of that great country.

  41. Senior Citizen ulishilu that is why you are so mayopic and riggid in your thinking because to you any topic you just narrow it between the pact and movement for mad dogs and in your usuall stupidity movement fo rmad dogs is the winner and the pact is the looser.

  42. BA KK during your time you honoured stone throwers as National HEROES.It was an accepted way of achieving your justied call of frustrating your opponents. That seed of violence which was planted in your time has never died. Some political parties always feel cheated at the hands of their opponents and hence they resolt to violence out of frustration, failure and stress.

  43. Fools don’t know when they are foolish but the wise are not only aware of their foolish acts, but can learn from theirs and those of fools. HH, please focus. We know you know when you make bad choices but unlike most, you know. Remembr, its hard to stay clean if you get in power with dirty hands. Make a name for yourself as one of the young men that brought dignity to the Zambians. We need that back. since 91 we have been on a down hill. Mwanawasa tried to bring that back. KK was at his best at your age. At the same age Chiluba was at his best destroying the nation; about the same age levy tried to restore. you are at the active age that can bring change. KK only failed us more in his late age and we see a worse trend with RB. HH, please focus. you dont need to be in plot 1 to make change

  44. Chi SC # 1 and # 3 bad manners you are so daft and you belong to the Teta and Mulongoti camp. you are in America as a govt employee not govt trophy these political appointments are like dew. remember George Chilumanda?

  45. Chiluba was this afternoon aquitted of all charges against him. Does this surprise anyone? Remember he was a damn good president. This is Zambia in the sun.
