President Rupiah Banda says Patriotic Front (PF) leader Michael Sata cannot influence government because he is not the Head of State.

President Banda has challenged Mr. Sata against rushing to the press when aggrieved but consult government using the normal established channels of communication.

Answering questions from Journalists soon after his arrival from Libya at the Lusaka International Airport, President Banda maintained that he had nothing to do with the acquittal of second former Republican President Frederick Chiluba.

Mr. Banda said Mr. Sata cannot influence government and advised the opposition leader to concentrate on putting his party in order by reconciling with his Members of Parliament (MPs).

He said it was not appropriate for the opposition to tell government what to do when he had expelled his members of parliament.

“I had nothing to do with the acquittal of Dr. Chiluba. Sata should know that he lost elections and he is not the President of Zambia therefore he cannot influence government. He should talk to us (government) accordingly than rush to the press. Let him fire his own MPs as he normally does than tell us what to do,” President Banda said.

PF president Mr. Sata is quoted in the press as having asked President Banda to fire the Director of Public Prosecutor Chalwe Mchenga and Vice President Kunda for alleged indiscipline in the handling of the acquittal of Dr. Chiluba.

And President Banda says he wholeheartedly respects the decision of the Provincial and National Executive Committees (PEC and NEC) calling for the postponement of the MMD convention.[quote]

Mr. Banda said when the ruling party is fully organised, the date for holding MMD convention will be announced.

He challenged the opposition to hold their conventions because the ruling MMD is exhibiting true democracy.

“Our MMD convention will be held and the nation will be informed but let the opposition tell us when they will hold theirs,” he stated.

Meanwhile President Banda has said he assented to the NGO Bill because the MMD was a democratic party that upholds the rule of law and good governance.

He called upon the civil society to work with government to foster good governance and the tenets of democracy.

The President was met on arrival by Vice President George Kunda, cabinet Ministers, senior government and MMD party officials.

  13. I hear Banda went straight from the airport to UTH-ICU to visit his dying mouth piece Satamashimba. We also know, against advise from our doctors that Satamashimba was technically dead, Kanitundila forced them to evacuate him to Morningside where the doctors have also issued the same verdict, DEAD ALIVE! Now, who is going to pick up this bill at Morningside? By the way, looking at Mlongoti and Kunda and VJ, I would not be suprised to see them join Teta in this comatose state ling before the 2011 polls. Akulu mpuno might also join, look at the way he is coming down the stairs of the plan, chameleonic style.

  14. What ever ailment it is troubling Satamashimba, it is aggressive. Imagine the South African sangomas with all their powers on heaven and earth failing to cure him! Awe sure, if I were Kanitundila I will stay away from the UTH-ICU because mashabe aya could be contagious. The way of the world is also amazing, this is the same chap who laughed at Levy even advocating for him Kanitundila to ascend to power before Levy died. Now he is also comatose, Kanitundila must relieve him of his ministerial post. We cannot continue paying him for comatose services, Local Govt cannot continue on auto pilot like this, awe sure!

  16. Kanitundila ulekwatako tu wisdom, honestly does it mean when King Cobra Sata loses elections he cannot comment on issues of public interest? Elections have passed, let us concentrate on issues such as Sata is raising!

  17. Sata is making allegations without evidence. Does it mean that when you are Bemba, everything Sata says is true? I agree when you say you are not kids but following false allegations only because you and Sata are of the same tribe is pathetic. Its no wonder Zambia cant develop. Development starts in the mind and not at state house. Until such time that Sata can produce evidence to show Mchenga & Kunda broke the law,he should just concentrate on preparing for the long awaited PF convention. Sata’s dictatorial ways in the PF party will soon come to an end when he is replaced with educated people like Dr. Machungwa, at the convention. In the mean time, RB is developing the MMD grassroots support rapidly so that he can get the 50+1% he needs to secure a second term, whilst Sata sits on radio.

  18. It was imprudent for the President to tell Mr. Sata to concentrate of firing his MPs. The “rebel” MPs were “fired” from the party a long time ago but the Speaker of the National Assembly did not declare their seats vacant. Please help Sata by telling Mwanamwambwa to declare the seats vacant. And the President should remember that every Zambian has the right to comment on what is going on in the country and thus influence government. Who told him that only those who win elections have the capacity and right to influence government?

  80. Why are we not getting an update on Tetamanshimba’s illness? When LPM was dying there was so much noise about demand to know the situtation. Teta is national leader and people must be informed of his illness too.

  82. Most probably Teta’s organs had shut down and the Doctors in SA must have put him in an induced coma so that the meds could work fast. His body must have been in a bad shape and he didnt respond to the meds and didnt wake up from the coma. They brought him back to Zed so that his family could say their goodbyes. If South African Sangomas cannot help him, I doubt Dr. Sondashi will be of any help either. If the opposition MPs were operating like people, not like the monkeys now at Munda Wanga, Banda would work and respect the people of Zambia. But because of money and the confusion led by Machungwa, Banda feels protected hence the arrogance and wastage we see in govt today. Machungwa must be the target if MMD has to be controlled.
