MMD to table convention petitions before NEC soon

The Movement for Multi party Democracy (MMD) would soon table provincial committees’ petitions to have the party’s national convention postponed until after 2011 elections before the National Executive Committee (NEC).

MMD National Chairman Michael Mabenga said the MMD constitution provides that after more than six provincial committees have petitioned for an issue, that petition becomes valid and NEC must table it for discussion and arrive at a decision.

“You are the seventh or eighth province that has petitioned for the need for MMD convention to be deferred to a later date after 2011 elections. The party constitution says when six provinces submit petitions, that petition stands ground and must be discussed by NEC and the conclusion made,” he explained.

Mr. Mabenga said he was going to waste no time and would soon issue instructions to the secretariat to call for a NEC meeting so that the party can make a decision over the matter.

He was speaking yesterday when he addressed MMD district officials from the seven districts in the province who converged and conducted a solidarity march over the acquittal of second republican president, Dr Frederick Chiluba.

Earlier, Luapula province acting chairperson Crispin Musosha presented the petition to Mr. Mabenga demanding for NEC to defer the national convention to a later date after 2011 presidential and parliamentary elections.

And 84 opposition Patriotic Front (PF) members from Mwense district have resigned from the party to join the ruling MMD.

The 84 include PF district youth chairman Samuel Chungu, who led the defectors to announce their resignation.

Mr. Chungu said he was resigning from PF to join MMD which is a party that is governing and bringing development to the country.

In welcoming the defectors, Mr. Mabenga immediately distributed the MMD cards to all the 84 former PF members.

He said the defectors were coming back home and appealed to MMD members to accommodate them as part of the family.

Mr. Mabenga paid tribute to provincial minister Boniface Kawimbe and other well wishers who are helping to organise MMD in the province.

He said he has always worried about Luapula province because people in the area had disowned the party that they had helped to form.

He however said what he saw at the meeting was a testimony of the good work that the provincial minister and well wishers were doing to unify MMD.

He appealed to the people of Luapula to continue supporting MMD because its policies were aimed at developing the country.

Mr. Mabenga further advised the MMD members to be wary of the PF and UPND pact which he said was patched and only bent at peddling untruth that will not help to develop the country but only bring confusion.

“Be wary with the pact that is patched and full of lies. These lies never build, the lies never bring development and lies do not bring peace,” he said.

Before addressing the meeting, Mr. Mabenga was joined by deputy minister of local government Crispin Musosha, Luapula province minister Boniface Kawimbe, MMD deputy national secretary and scores of MMD cadres to observe a moment of silence for the late Local Government and Housing minister Ben Tetamashimba.

Mr. Mabenga told the MMD members that it was particularly difficult for him to stand and address them at the time the party and government were mourning the late Mr. Tetamashimba.

He said he was only compelled to address the cadres because they had already made adequate arrangements for the meeting.

Speaking earlier, MMD deputy national secretary Jeff Kaande warned that Chilanga MP Ng’andu Magande and Kafulafuta MP George Mpombo risk being charged and expelled from the party if the duo continues insulting government leaders.

Mr. Kaande said he has been restrained from acting against Mr. Magande and Mr. Mpombo in order to avoid unnecessary by-elections which he said were costly.

However, he charged that should the two members of parliament continue with their utterances against the MMD leadership, they would be pushing NEC too far and risk being ejected from MMD.

“The two MPs, Magande and Mpombo have been insulting government, but I have resisted to charge them simply to avoid by-elections which are costly. Instead of spending resources on these elections government wants to take the money into developing the country,” Mr. Kaande said.

“But if they want to push me further, I will not tolerate them. They should take this as a timely warning,” he added.

  1. You ministers, do you have time to do your ministiral jobs???
    You just talk about MMD.
who cares about your convention…if you want you can nominate RB for 2021 elections.

  2. Smells like Sata’s 3rd Term manouvres in 2001. Anyone remember?

The forces are in full swing to install RB on teh throne in 2011. Seen it before. It worked, FTJ and Sata managed to change the MMD constitution to allow a 3rd Term. Only halted when they tried to temper with teh national constitution. The general public wouldnt have the thugs have their way.

  3. B.U.L.L.S.H.I.T,what nonsense is he going to table before a useless NEC.You yokels stop wasting national time & take care of your health. One rat down so far lets wait till 2011 how many rats will be alive

Natlla fye ati miposhepo, I’m tired of discussing politics on this site since nothing ever seems to change. Things are always getting from bad to worse everyday while our leaders play. Fact or fiction? After so much has been said and done, we Africans still remain the laughing stock of the universe and yet our continent is the very purveyor of the earthly comfort.

  7. Uganda has banned the sale and consumption of locally-made gin in sachets after 19 people died of suspected methanol poisoning, Health Minister Stephen Mallinga. “Countrywide we have registered a total of 27 people affected and 19 have so far died. All the dead had consumed alcohol packed in sachets and the blood samples from the survivors showed a very high level of methanol,” Mallinga told AFP, adding one of the symptoms of methanol poisoning is loss of eye sight.

“We have recommended a ban on vending alcohol and other beverages in plastic sachets,” he said.

The alcohol sold in sachets in Uganda is generally of the worst quality.

  8. pIPO OF THIS NATION ARE YOU AWARE THAT RB WENT SEE TB JOSHUA OF NIGREIA TO ENQUIRE IF HE IS GOING TO WIN 2011 ELECTION AND HE WAS TOLD THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE HE WAS NOT SUPOOSED TO BE PRESIDNET

  9. These postponements of the MMD convention are orchestrated! I am sure the MMD in every province of Zambia will parrot the thing over and again! Politics in Zambia will continue to be boring and stagnant as long as we do not get rid of the MMD. Although they boast of having brought multi-party democracy to Zambia, the MMD has in no way promoted the enhancement of democracy. Candidates at conventions are dictated and if one dares to go against this dictation, he/she is deemed enemy of the party. Remember what they did to Miyanda and Kavindele! There is no democracy in MMD and this is contributing to the lowering of standards of democracy in Zambia.
Zambians must wake up and begin thinking of an alternative government or we will remain as stagnant as we have been in everything. God save us…

  10. UN Says New Currency Is Needed to Fix Broken ‘Confidence Game’

Sept. 7 (Bloomberg) — The dollar’s role in international trade should be reduced by establishing a new currency to protect emerging markets from the “confidence game” of financial speculation, the United Nations said.
UN countries should agree on the creation of a global reserve bank to issue the currency and to monitor the national exchange rates of its members, the Geneva-based UN Conference on Trade and Development said today in a report.

  11. One PF kaponya going by Outlaw in his original draft to the blog which has taken many alterations says, Unfortunately, politics in Zambia has become so cut-throat. Problem with many of these opposition goof balls is that they stumble into the ring like defeated sheep. No ways can they win against an opponent like MMD who are focused, organized, seasoned ans resourceful besides being mean spirited, ruthless, soul-less and mentally engaged. That is to say, broad minded. MMD will dominate for the beyond 20 years unless a credible oppositions not there emerges and decides to get serious. They should quit this game of tacking their tails between their legs and farting shamelessly.

  13. Oppositions bane, if you are not on top of your game, you can forget about unseating MMD. It will be 20 years in 2011, since MMD came to power. KK did 27 years without an opposition. It’s unconscionable that these MMDs could make a 20 year run with an opposition in place. Especially considering the fact that MMD is primarily composed of sagacious, brainwpowered multidisciplinary mafias.

Are you really going to continue ifisushi with this clueless Sata as if constipation is your biggest problem? Oppositions, I ask you. If you say no to that, ditto. I do not think so too.I pray Mutesa and his chola boy Angel here can bring life and hope in the camp considering that the UK born “Citizen Democratic Party” of Cho and legion has locked its tail on Zambian Economist blog only.

  14. Mabenga went to Luapula to celebrate the acquitall of his fellow THIEF. You know birds of the same feathers!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. Mabenga looks and thinks like a frog. Since i was last on this “blog” (Ama bloggers) Tetamashimba has gone to meet his maker. My condolences to his family. I did not agree with his Politics or his methods, but i believe we need to let the lord be the one to now pass judgement

  16. #21. has it come come lay in state in Solwezi?? why only 2 where are the 98 hearses??. we expected to see all 100 hearses at teta’s funeral. Funeral of the year…

  17. Who cares about your useless convention. If you want you can be petitioning everyday, even your unproductive ministers can join, apart from Brian Chituwo.
MMD has been like this since 1992 no wonder i will never be a member.

Ba Mabenga mushainafye kufyabupuba. Who ever told you that Chiluba will get you Luapula lied to you big time.

  18. Teta started this crusade on endorsing RB as the sore candidate to standard in 2011. Mabenga now wants to continue. Mabenga careful with your sensely noise about the convention with planned pertitions. Just a handfull of Bootliggers from some provinces you think you can woodwink your fellow MMD members who have interest to contest for presidency. Teta may his rest in internal peace. Such is life.

  19. It is true that GRZ leadership lacks the knowledge and wisdom to lead this nation. These people only know how to fight. The president is a very old man, but really with know wisdom. Does it mean that even people at that age have no wisdom??. Everything he is doing seems to be leading to a high confrontation with reality. This Chuluba thing will put him in trouble. Kafupi is craft and he will lead this man into total darkness. Those are crooks a common man would never want to associate with. Chalimutwala na ku chirch nomba. Nabakashi babene. Pule is his friend. So you can see the confusion. These are agents of the Devil

  20. U bums..u mean you have not learnt anythng from TETA. Just hold the convention and restore democracy in your party. Bena Mabenga shameless thieves pionering illegal activities..

  21. Am I not mistaken that this same Mabenga should have been arrested per Supreme Court years ago? What petition is this is bufoon talking about? Zambia is becoming a lawless country, and unfortunately this trend will continue unless Zambians rise up and take their country back. Clearly, RB is taking us nowhere, but to oblivion. How can we allow a situation whereby Chiluba appears to be calling the shots? How can Chiluba have the audacity to claim that the money in the Zamtrop account is his, unless we Zambians allow it? Where did the money come from? We need to put these so-called well-wishers under oath. Shame on the so-called pastors for accepting bloody money from Kafupi.

  23. Be careful with Chiluba. This man has never respected friendships. When it suits him he will do anything to achieve his end even those who are celebrating can be his victims

  24. Banda seems to be all convinced that he ca win the next polls just by woeing the Luapulan vote by virtue of releasing Chiluba from the hook he deliberately nailed himself to. Well, mark my word, the MMD NEC will sooner than later cancel the Convention and annoint Banda by default as their candidate. This will cause a major split in the MMD collapsing their majority in parliament. Once this happens, he will try to expel rebel MPs who will obtain a court stay of execution while the opposition will reach out to impeach him in parliament. He will disolve the house, call for polls and lose hands down to Fred M’Membe the allied opposition candidate. Then, Zambians will get even with all thieves, once and for all!
