The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)says the Copperbelt University (CBU) Students should have found a proper channel of airing their grievances than resorting to riotous behavior.

The entire COBUSU leadership has been expelled for allegedly being in breach of students’ rules and regulations that led to disturbances that rocked the institution between April 18 and August 12, 2009.

ZCTU President Leonard Hikaumba said in an interview in Lusaka today that the riotous behaviour by the CBU students led to a lot of property getting damaged.

Mr Hikaumba said if the students had followed the proper channel of airing their grievances than resorting to riotous behaviour, no property would have been damaged and that the entire COBUSU leadership could not have been expelled.

He also pointed out that riotous behaviour also leads to innocent people getting injured in the process.

The ZCTU President said the CBU students should have directed all their grievances to the appropriate authorities so that a solution to their problems was found.

Meanwhile, Mr. Hikaunba has noted that it was very unfortunate that the entire Copperbelt University Students Union (COBUSU) has been expelled.

He however, said expelling the entire COBUSU was not the best solution in trying to address the problems that the students were facing at the institution.

  1. iwe hikaumba, advise properly. do you remember how you yourself was expelled from yunza in the days of ben chilufya, probably the greatest PG yunzasu has ever had?

  2. HIKAUMBA JUST KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT. I AM GOING TO DIG INTO YOUR LIFE STYLE IF U CONTINUE WITH YOUR CHOLA BOY MENTALITY SO THAT THE BLOGGERS CAN KNOW. THESE BOYS SHUD BE FORGIVEN AND BE GIVEN A CAUTION AND WARN. BREAKING PROPERTIES WAS NOT THE MOST PLEASING THING TO DO TO EXPRESS THE FRUSTRATION. HIKAUMBA CONCENTRATE ONLY MENDING YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH SILVIA. NI ZAULULA.

  3. The problem with all these chaps is that they have been to, and understand the problems these institutions face, but the moment they become ba “Some of Us” they always forget to improve the situation. It ‘s like thinking that because ‘ine naleya ku school with ziwaya in my pockets, no shoes and no akajilijili (ka drink kapa break),’ then even my children will also go to school like that. Times have changed so shame upon you Mwanawasa SC (PH), Chitala, Hikayumba, and the whole bunch. So far Mmembe is the only one who has kept the tradition of UNZASU, “Agreeing to Disagree.”

  4. I dont think he has said anything worng read again guys. The CBU students as a whole should not have involved themselves in a riot to destroy property. They could have done as they did a peaceful protest but others got too over exited and put people lives in danger and destroyed property. The COBUSU did not do anything wrong all they did was there job. Thats what this Hikaumba guy has said and his right. The COBUSU should not have been expelled and should reinstated in school. Others have a few months to go to graduate.

  5. Why do the students always resort to this sort of action? Aren’t there better means of airing grievances? As if things are not bad enough, they decide to expell the whole student council. Poor judgment on the admin

  6. Allowing these thugs in the Zambian education system would be criminal misconduct synonymous with rewarding the Joe Kakusa/Hichilema sponsored thuggery every Zambian has come to abhor. Zambia need to set a precedence that never again will thuggery be rewarded in progressive and democratic Zambian. It shall never be rewarded but denied a future. If these thugs have to be forgiven, the thugs must first go stone Hichilema and Kakusa to death and burn their households for ruining their lives as a sign of registering their repentance to to the nation.

  7. I have no problem with the students protesting, but I take issue with them stoning innocent people’s vehicles. We are the ones who pay taxes so that they can eat vinsima and drink vichibuka which give them energy and we expect them to expend that energy on productive things. On the other end, maybe I am being harsh, maybe I expect too much from these glorified secondary school students!

  8. F&%K HIKAHUMBA, I PERSONALLY WONDER HOW ON EARTH THIS F&*&R HAS STAYED THIS LONG AT THE HELM OF THE TRADE UNION, HE IS A DAMN COWARD OF ALL UNION LEADERS I HAVE EVER KNOWN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE…WHY IS HE PLAYING DOUBLE STANDARDS? CHECK THE WAY HE REACTED TO THE NURSES’S STRIKE…I HATE THIS DAMN NIGGA..HE IS CRAP, A SCAM BAG, A BUFFOON…ZAMBIA DOESNT NEED SUCH CHAPS, JUST LIKE TETA!!! NIMFULWA SAANA…HE KNOWS BETTER WHAT IT MEANS TO BE EXPELLED FROM UNI….HIS DAYS ARE NUMBERED!!!

  9. The problem with most managers in Zambia is that they never seem to learn from past experience. Student riots are usually predictable and mostly could be avoided by pre-emptying the students’ complaints. See the problem and advise the students in advance to show them that you are ahead of the game and that you know and are concerned about their plight. But, Zambian managers wait until students take to the streets and even then they are not courageous enough to diffuse the situation. In short, what we need are proactive managers and not the l;ets wait and see type of leaders. Expelling students has never been a hindrance to riotous behaviour. This method has been tried before and has failed in all cases. Talk to the boys and girls and show leadership at CBU bwana Musonda.

  10. STATE MONKEY, IM SURE YOU DON’T HAVE ANY ISSUE WITH MMD THUGS WHO STONE ANYONE WHO IS AGAINST THEIR MASTER-RB…TAX PAYING? STOP PAYING TAX IF YOU THINK ALL YOUR TAX ONLY GOES TO PAYING STUDENTS’ CHIBUKU BILLS…I WONDER IF AT ALL U YOURSELF HAVE BEEN A STUDENT BEFORE….ASK GOVT TO DIRECT YOUR TAXES INTO SPONSORING THEIR PARTY ACTIVITIES, SO U CAN BE A HAPPIER CITIZEN…..DON’T 4GET THAT EACH AND EVERY STUDENT’S PARENTS PAY TAXES AS WELL…WATCH YOUR MOUTH…

  11. 12. It is very unwise and prejudicial for Hikaumba to comment on this issue at a time when the expelled students have appealled against the charges laid against them.
Hikaumba should be advised to learn to keep quiet on issues on which he is not competent and concentrate on issues affecting the workers that he represents.
Civil servants are suffering on “slave wages” and horrible conditions of service while he wines and dines on their monthly contributions.

  13. When these students resort to riotous behaviour send those cadets to them to also do some riotouse behaviour on their nerve systems. STudent behaviour like this is probably why zambian universities though being good are not taken seriously. Am glad someone was expelled for such antics , next week they need to be digging zesco trenches for playing with their education. When you are at university you need to protest properly not protesting like lunatics

  14. some bloggers are sounding like they are suffering from chifukushi for not having had an opportunity to be at UNZA or CBU, then through struggle or yakumbuyo managed to get into some make shift uni in diaspora….& now think they can reign over zed uniz which they envied so much then….good 4u hopefully…

  15. What did you expect of the students once their friend was shot by the police and the RP’s government and the police turned their backs on the students. Hiccup is be irrational to think any sane and rational person would do anything other than what the students did in an effort to get justice for their colleague. Up to now, no one is even talking about the poor chap that was shot.

  16. ELONATONA is not blogging today I miss his picture. Hikaumba has become a leader that does not really represent or speak honestly for the plight of the worker. He is a dog that does not bite. Trade Union, Trade Union, where?????

  17. For Zambia to compete effectively, it needs innovators and thinkers – not thugs and savages. Did rioting and stone throwing achieve anything? You be the judge.

  18. Is this Man a University graduate ? He does not seem to understand the operations of University during critical times and thus his statement are way off the mark

  19. I tink we have problems of understanding english. The man’s language is clean and clear. No violence should be tolerated.Order should be maintained.Problems should be solved. No expelling people as a way of solving problems.Actually no injurying innocent people who are not even involved in the Dora/RB issues.
Zambians:COBASU etc fighting innocent people is so retrogressive.Get to the people causing problems and talk, write, call, shout etc.Gov,stop punishing innocent people and punish those thieves that milk our country.

  20. This Hikaumba chap is just another boot-licker. Destruction of public/private property is not and was not the solution to CBU problems and we understand, but expelling the entire union is an act of victimization, GRZ is simply trying to silence criticism using whatever stupid regulation or law they can misuse.Personally I believe our government is run and controlled by Hypocrites, thugs and the worst criminals in society who deserve nothing but a rope around their necks. When the boy at CBU was shot by a state cop did The Admin look into it? do they even care? and yet when students riot they are quick to Judge them and condemn them. even pipo like Hikaumba who are supposed to understand are now on the wrong side.
thank God Jesus is coming soon, someone needs to punish these devils……..

  21. We always look to point fingers instead of pointing out the real problem. Can someone get to the bottom of this all issue and come up with a sense solution instead of finger pointing. Obviously the behavior by the student was uncalled for, but also remember that these students pay money for the educational services. Remember paying for a 1kg packet of sugar at Shop rite and only to be given a half kg. wouldn’t u be irate. Think about this!

  22. This guy is behaving like a cadre. How many time has UZASU used the available channels to address their grievances and nothing has happened? This guy is another coward and fool that is misrepresenting the concern of citizenry

  23. Hikaumba, what is your position? You have been a student before. You are now just a chicken and not worth a unionist. Do not beat about the bush. Just say the students should be reinstated without any charge. They did nothing on that day. That vehicle had a fault.

  24. HIKAUMBA is not acting childishly by condeming or accepting the expulsion of the COBUSU UNION.He is part of the matured zambians who pay tax for the betterment of mother zambia. Therefore the tax payers money should not be wasted by the febble minded moroons who resort to violence as a way of conveying their grievances.I will condemn HIKAUMBA to hell if he supports irresponsible and violence behavior ,BUTon this HE IS ON MY SIDE AND HE IS BEHAVING like a responsible trade union leader.PLEASE HIKAUMBA advice the expelled roffers to form a political party…..

  25. Thuggery and hooliganism can not be tolerated in the Zambia education system
Any riotous behavior especially directed at innocent Zambians should not be tolerated at all, such kind of behavior bleeds war. I strongly urge all peace loving Zambians to condemn the act and uphold the decision taken by the CBU management to get rid of thugs
VIVA PEACE !!! ABASH THUGGERY & VIOLENCE!!!!

  26. I fail to find any logic in the behavior of CBU and even UNZA students, the so called innocent Zambian also pays his taxes so these guys can have an education and an allowance. When they do not get the allowance they stone him. This behavior should not be allowed any further. Something has to happen to send a message to students that , the Zambian people through the tax system pay their allowance and it is un acceptable to insult or hit your uncle who is allowing you to have food on the table. It has not yet been translated to the students who pays their allowances. Match to state house, shout at government officials all you want, but the man in the street pays for your stay at UNZA and you should have the out most respect for him and his property.

  27. I feel you #30. And they are supposed to be the most intelligent people in the country yet there sense of judgement is so bad. one wonders how they pass their exams! And they forget that they are ones affected when they take 7 years to complete a degree course instead of normal 4yrs.

  28. Like some has put it these are glorified secondary school pupils. I dont just understand how students from the highest institution of learning can behave like that. As for the students take this advice: Beating innocent people, destroying your own campus property, stoning and burning cars is a very primitive and barberic way of expressing your grievances you stupid *****s. Shemuna shame!

  29. well,it easy said than done.mr hikaumba was once a student leader and he knows just like he leads the highest office of workers that he doesn’t incite workers to strike.
has he ever taken the responsibility of all the strikes that happen in this country year in year out? its in the same vain he should understand that no well meaning leader can ask his followers to riot.we all have regreated the happenings at our high learning institutions but should level headed to judge.

Next time he should have an audience the the university authority so as to persue the CBU management to find another way of sorting out the problems.
In so saying iam not in support of the misschiefs students enganges in but as adults we are bound to correct stuations.
    keep cool guys.
