The Movement for Multy-Party Democracy (MMD) Western Province Treasurer, Michael Kaingu has said the party in the province did not consult him or other senior members before deciding to call for a convention.

Mr. Kaingu has meanwhile said that he is still in support for calls from people in other provinces including NEC for the MMD to postpone its convention.

Mr Kaingu, said it is irrelevant for the province to oppose calls to defer the party’s national convention.

Mr. Kaingu said this is because more than six provinces have already endorsed calls for the postponement of the convention, making the decision by the executive in Western province pointless

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today, Mr. Kaingu said he and other senior members of the party were not consulted as alleged by the MMD provincial youth Chairman over the need to hold a convention.

He said he was not even part of the team which met in the province last week to discuss the issue of the convention.

He charged that if consulted he would have provided good guidance to the other members on how to handle the issue of holding the convention.[quote]

Mr. Kaingu said the MMD does not have enough money to spend on the convention and challenged all those calling for it to start raising money to hold it.

He further charged that the MMD in the province risks becoming irrelevant for not supporting other provinces who are calling for the postponement of the convention until after the 2011 general elections.

Mr. Kaingu said the party’s constitution mandates that decisions made by more than seven provinces should be accepted as law adding that about seven have since agreed not to hold convention.

He said he also wanted to stand as NEC member during the convention but he has decided to follow what the majority have resolved.

Mr. Kaingu has advised his youth chairman to desist from attacking him and other senior members of the party.

  1. MMD should hold a convetion or else the party will break up. The third term bid by Chiluba should serve as a good lesson.

  2. The cost of democracy… i find it disappointing, utterances from a senior leader that opposing a majority view renders MMD in WP irrelevant …

  3. WHY SHUD THEY JUST GO AHEAD AND HOLD A CONVENTION SO THAT THE PEOPLE CAN VOTE AND TEST THE STAMINA OF RB AND ALSO TO ALLOW OTHERS TO STAND AND CHALLENGE HIM. THIS IS A SIGN THAT THE PEOPLE AT THE ABOVE ARE SCARED LUPIYA MAY NOT BE VOTED FOR. I ALSO URGE THE PF TO HOLD A CONVENTION TOO BECOZ SATA LOOKS LIKE A ONE MAN SHOW IN PF. HE SHUD ALSO NOT MAKE TOO MUCH NOISE HIS PARTY NEEDS PIPO WHO CAN CHALLENGE HIM.

I just hope these youths are also ready to take up responsibilty for their actions and not to start crying out loud when their leaders dissapoint them. You reap what you sow…and I don’t want to hear any guff about this…

  5. For as long as people cannot follow bylaws or guidelines fo organizarions, there is no way we can achieve unity. The MMD has not been proactive at planning for the convention. I don’t think they have a budget for it. They should have started fund raising for the convention five years ago. Shame upon the educated cream of MMD who have the knowledge of finance and personnel management which is not being used to make the party practice democratic principles. Democracy is not cheap. Don’t just preach it, practice it.

  6. It is important to have a convention to find out where the MMD leader plans to take Zambia if they win the elections. This is an opportunity to find out what RBanda’s plans are going to be if he is elected by MMD. It is good PR for the party . An employer needs to check if staff are doing their job …..we call it work appraisel. I view the president as a person in charge of a billion dollar company. The party who elected him have the duty to their country to find out what the plan is of a leader. Running a country affects millions of people. Party conventions help in the process of scrutinizing character and strength before the elections in 2011. It is a very good idea to have a convention..they call it democracy.

  9. Nice suit with a bowtie. You could mistake him for a professor or high court judge, unfortunately the buffoon is a party minion.

  10. If you’re not an MMD member then why cry about this. Whatever they decide determines there fate when interparty and presidential elections occur. Other than that, it’s a mere circus.

  11. The convention should be held, though it may be cost a lot, but its the wises idea.. If MMD is to survive in Western province.. I believe Kaingu doesn’t know it will be to restore the party if it dies in a province…
Kaingu, womfya umutwe..” And you charged that if consulted you would have provided good guidance to the other members on how to handle the issue of holding the convention. ”
Democracy is not one man, its rule by the people..
    You take is useless!!

  12. The vile opportunism that has crept into our political landscape stinks to the very heavens above. You bet the good lord God almighty in the heavens above is overly nauseated by Kaingu’s and his Kanitundila rented goons’ stinking opportunism. Laws should be obeyed, whether you like it or not, a quorm was formed in Western Province and the decision is binding be it on senior officials or unintelligent cadres like Kaingu. He can keep his so called misguidance to himself, the West should just make sure such scum is booted out of parliament come 2011.

  13. Just hold the convention, be partriotic, whats the fear, PF also go to the convention. Its time to see and taste democracy in ZED. Be like UPND

  14. Kaingu don’t mislead us….a quoram was formed in the PEC meeting in Mongu at which the decision was made. If anything it was not the youth but the entire PEC. Bo ndate wake up, your time is up and now is ours to contest and hold seats in PEC. We need a vibrate MMD that can restore lost confidence in the people. One way is through democratically elected leaders not imposed ones.

they won’t come after you. they too scared. they are headless chickens being lead by an even bigger headless chicken

  16. Is this Man a Pastor Sakala or Phiri who wanted to spill the bean? He looks like he is having a tot of Kachasu coz he has his eyes closed. Go for a convention we chipuba iwe….

  17. The MMD are doing a great Job on behalf of the opposition… They are so divided it is unbelievable. The lack of intra party democracy is causing a split between the youths and the old dinasours. The youth are the future, they have energy, and are more tolerant and desiring of democracy. I hope PF and UPND take advantage. Although i dont support the tribalist sentiments of GBM, i hope he wins the Kasama Central by election – this should wake up MMD. Besides, the poor guy deserves a break after spending over a billion in Kabwata and failing to win.

  18. Let me get this straight. MMD doesn’t have an elected president, doesn’t have an elected vice president and over half of the NEC is nominated. And you call yourselves democratic? You don’t get any more undemocratic than this. No wonder RB is turning out to be a dictator. His own party is failing to hold him accountable. This stuff may fly in the MMD but it won’t fly with the nation. That is why you think evryone who opposes you is a traitor because you have been having your way with the party. The party claims to be broke and yet somehow, genius chiluba has USD8.5m at his disposal!

  19. Just go for the convention you guys what are you scared of you cowards in the MMD?Democracy should be seen and supported that is why you are in GRZ so lead by example.Others are protection there jobs someone offered them, need to prove if you are hard working or just a lazy one

  20. I THOUGHT IT HIM WHO IS SUPPOSED TO CONSULT HIS CONSITITUENTS AND THE APPRAISE THE NEC ON THEIR FEELINGS? AN MP ETC IS AN EMPLOY OF THOSE WHO VOTED FOR HIM AND MUST REPRESENT THEIR TRUE FEELINGS AND ASPIRATIONS. WITHOUT THEM HE CANNOT BE A MINISTER. OR IF HE WISHES TO REPRESENT RB HE MUST RESIGN FROM HIS AREA AND ASK RB TO RE APPOINT HIM MP(NOMINATED) THEN HE CAN DO WHAT EVER HE WANTS

  21. Baza ku gwila ka ng’oto … Kaingu and your friends should be careful with Lozi’s… They will strungle you.. You don’t know the saying…?? If they say enough its enough…
We need a convention, its democratic…Ba shetani imwe!!!

  22. you do need to be consulted kaingu.the party constitution says u need a convention.i have not read the same constitution but i dont think ,it can say no convention will be held when they is no money.it will be a bad example .next time iam president i will also say my wife will be president because 7 provinces have said there will be no convention.banda can be president for all i care but we can not go back to kaunda error ,where the bigman was opposed by a frog.

  23. Now Katele Kalumba has issued a statement declaring that he has disolved the whole western province MMD comittee. Watch this space as they say… Banda wants to drag Zambia back to the old days of draconian laws/practise and the rest of the country stand by idly watching. So far only Livingstone and western province has spoken out, everyone has their tails between their legs. Change gon come.

  24. He further charged that the MMD in the province risks becoming irrelevant for not supporting other provinces who are calling for the postponement of the convention until after the 2011 general elections

    Relevant to who?

  25. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE PEOPLE IN WESTERN PROVINCE.THESE ARE PRICIPLED PEOPLE,WE NEED MORE PEOPLE LIKE YOU.JUST FOLLOW EVEN HOW CHARLES MILUPI DISCUSSES ISSUES,HE IS INTELLIGENT AND ABSOLUTELY CLEAR.I WISH OTHER PROVINCES CAN HAVE THE DYNAMISM WE ARE SEEING IN WESTERN PROVINCE.KEEP IT UP

  26. I don’t know what the hoohaa is all about – this democracy thing. People can educate themselves by spending a few hours reading classics such as Plato’s Republic. You will find that what you think is govt by a choice is actually an aristocracy – all the people of zambia do is vote for the guys who are going to molest them. It is the same everywhere. Divide and conquer – poor vs. rich, black vs. white, christian vs. muslim, notherner vs. eastener. All this divisive manipulation for a select group of people to get their turn at the trough. Life, liberty and property are all the rights we need for ourselves and others. No need to hand over responsibilities to people with psychopathic attributes.

  27. I am endorsing RB for 2021 elections as presidential candidate….now RB appoint me as minister for endorsing you.

  28. No.10s comment is called NO COMMENT as seen on Euro News,it has proven to be the loudest and most effective way of sending a message across if people are smart enough to read between the lines that is.

  29. MMD go convention, it is not just about electing the president but even other positions. some characters are scared they will lose their “akalilo” in NEC so they are hiding in the name of the president to continue enjoying. Ba PF and UNPD pact should also hold a convention. twacula pafula

  30. #42. You have just opened my eyes. You see all these fakas are not elected in their positions such as Kaande. They are afraid that they will lose their party positions if a convention is held. Yangu bulanda.
