  1. Pic 13-Didnt know that the institute chiluba started was that beutiful away kanshi bakamupele ulupiya lwakwe the project was not only ambitious but well thought

  2. Pic 1 and 2 ku chibolya now thats my gheto okonaponeshe umutoto where everyone smiles coz there is enough weed for everyone.Damn i miss my homies in that hood after taking em greens twanwinapo na tin ya brown .

  3. Picture # 14 is a Shame to the Police Service. No wonder these chaps are so aggressive even under no compelling factor and so rooted in corrupt activities coz their environment for executing duties is just a sorry sight! I know this police post very well, it’s located near Simoson building just a few steps from Stanely Bar. How can we have such a ‘makeshift’ like office for the law enforcers right in the centre of the City, capital city? So shameful to say the least. How can their work be even taken serious in the first place. This Govt has done nothing to boast about. The only true success they’ve scored is reaching the highest level of failures. Shame on you focussing on stealing and dubious business transactions. Zamtel mwashishitisha kubanenu bamambala!

  4. #1 &#2. Very sad indeed. Talk about health! #11 The engineers must have been Americans! lol! They “don`t” do curbs in America!

  5. this is depressing, please don’t only show us the bad pictures ,we get that already from world media, atleast promote the positive side for a change.

  6. Also there needs to be a color adjustment to the camera being used,it’s too dull.Is there anyway people can submit pictures as well?

  7. no. 14 you are right l actually didt recongnise manda hill and show grounds it looked way too dry and that LT said was a beautifull view…..´´dryness´´

  8. Yep, that’s home. Could recognise it from anywhere. I miss it though, walking through the lanes in Soweto hassling naba kaponya. FTJ institute is nice! dont give it back to him! Now ba LT enough about this serious stuff, give us a picture update of Alfa bar. We need an update of one of the oldest and thriving businesses the world has had to offer (ama s_x escorts in english)

  9. I thought Levy and Masebo started a Keep Zambia Clean campaign and districts were ceremoniously given vehicles for this supposedly on-going project. What has happened ? Keeping the “Zambian Legacy” alive…if it does not personally benefit the politician or civil servant it is not worth doing.I really don’t know why we have such offices as District Commissioner.Iam old enough to recall the DCs of the colonial era did a commendable job keeping villages clean and they held provincial meetings to compare notes on “development” in their areas but this lot we have now are just cadres or relatives of Nyama Soya.

  10. NICEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE PICTURES. LT, I LIKE THESE PICS, THIS IS REALITY NOT THAT CRAP YOU HAVE BEEN SHOWING. I JUST LOVE THESE PICS. IT REMINDS ME OF WHAT I AM MISSING AND WHERE I HAVE COME FROM.

  11. Iwe mune Luapula Fish (#20) waile kwisa? Awe chawama sana to see you in a long time, welcome back to the LT world. Awe its true tute nembalala ni ziiii……

  12. Everyone who sees this as strange has never been home in a long time. I agree with most bloggers that these pics are more stimulating than the usual political nonsense. I think the “make Zambian Green” suggested project is good for a business venture. If you wanna cash in on government, just start it. In one way, you will be making zed look nice while feeding your kids on the other hand

  13. Thanks for pics LT. As for the FTJ institute it wasn’t like that when it was abandoned by Chiluba, it was an ugly looking building far from being finished. Obviously the businesses there have gone and completed the building and turned it into desirable office space e.g Ecobank so now it looks amazing. Another thing you have to realise is that every city in the world has a good and bad side, but what amazes me about is how self-loathing you are about Zambia. All you ever do is show photos about the bad side when there are plenty of places in the country look nice. As for the morons living abroad some of you have not been home for a very long time and have no idea how much development is going on in Zed, you take what is in the media and you go with that. What kind of jobs do you even have?

  14. Oh please post more decent pictures, like no. 15 Taly said we see too many depressing images through the media in the western world about our countries. Isn’t it time we started fighting back and started showing a more positive view of where we come from?

  15. This so far is thebest and well balanced collection of pics by LT. Not those we always see of irritating hugely Potbellied politicians.

  16. Thanks LT i’m sure manda hill area is dry but in few weeks it’ll be green coz rain season starts i think we just need to learn to plant mo trees during rainy season so that they can help to maintain groundwater, its inexpensive where is the ministry of forestry??? Nway these sad pictures r the majority of the truth the nice pics just make u n me feel better but the reality is that more than 70% of zedians live in abject poverty so as zambians we need to stop being apathatic n try to improve the general picture n this is only lusaka, l/stone n some C/B towns that have decent looking places that is not even half of zambia,

  17. #32 – Those containers were mobile holding cells for hoes around emmasdale and ESP in Villa. Bail payment was in kind for most officers on duty.

  18. Will Lusaka ever change, awe kanshi kwesu ku Ndola ku suma, maybe it’s because all the shanties in Ndola are far from the town centre.

  19. Nice pics. Thanks.

Please keep the balance – show both the best and the worst parts of Zambia.

Those open air abatoirs should be banned. Sanitation must be an issue.

  20. The place is dry because this is October. I like these pictures better than looking at RB. Next time why not venture out and show us pictures of places that we normally would not expect to see in Zambia. Its interesting that in the US you will never find a media company showing pictures of the Ghetto, but believe me I have seen places in the US down south that make you wonder, people living with no electricity in some post slave makeshift homes. We already have foreign visitors, donors showing the world how poor and depressing some places in Zambia are. Do we need to add ourselves in degrading ourselves.

  21. Lsktimes I think you need a professional photographer with a decent SLR and camera lens because those pics make Zambia look dull. Theres groups on FLICKR that update zambian pictures everyday and they make the country look very nice in comparison with those pictures you just posted. It’s not zambia that looks gloomy it’s your camera , get a good canon slr and an affordable 50mm f1.4 lens ora 70mmm-200mm f/4/L

  22. To be honest whoever was taking these photos picked up some of the worst spots in the city/country. most of them were in the Chibolya/Kanyama area. And the rest where in very awkward angles around Manda Hill/Arcades. Manda Hill Shopping mall is under construction.I could send you some sweet photos from Kitwe, and you bet your boots i will use a better camera and a little patriotism expertise. Just ask.

  23. LT PLEASE NOTE; WITH ALL DUE RESPECT AND APPRECIATION OF YOUR WORK, I AGREE WITH ALL THOSE CALLING FOR A BALANCED PICK OF THE PICTURES AND USE OF A GOOD CAMERA. FOR EXAMPLE WHY DO YOU JUST PICK ON A BAD ANGLE FOR MANDA HILL AND LEAVE OUT THE NEW BUILDING JUST OPPOSITE WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO BE CELTEL HEADQUATERS? I WAS HOME LAST YEAR AND I SAW A NUMBER OF NEW BETTER BUILDINGS IN LSK. COMBINE THESE WITH THOSE OF KALINGALINGA AND OTHER SHANTIES. MIND YOU, YOU ARE ZAMBIAN’S, AND WHY NOT FOR THE CHANGE BE POSITIVE ABOUT YOUR COUNTRY? THE WEST HAS ALREADY SHOWN SUCH PICTURES TO THE WORLD, IT WILL BE INTERESTING FOR YOU TO GIVE HOPE TO US NOT JUST GLOOM 7 DAYS A WEEK.

  24. the pics definitely brings one closer to home. nice to be able to identify most sports and feel them too. do town ships as well. like kabwata at peak hour (with guys doing last one for the road) or matero, emmasdale etc. i could identify a few “culprits”! but better still do other “cities” as well. phela you are national. some people even within lusaka come from kitwe and livingstone etc and they have not been home and you cant imagine what memories you might awaken

  25. Nice pictures LT. Pic # 1 & 2, somebody tell me, do we really have pipo who buy meat from such pathetic places? If we do then I’m the saddest person on earth.Pic # 14 surely does that qualify to be called an office. Where do they take the monies they collect by mounting roadblocks? Will things ever change as regards to how our police stations look.

  26. Pic #2 is disgusting. ******* pa table ATA IFI MAFI KUNSAPATO!!!!!! The guy is wearing his sneakers pa table ya nyama and the pit latrin he uses is probably right around there too. No doubt ba dyaka matuvi going to and coming from work munjila, that always happens. Health inspectors are needed there. I’m not saying they should be removed from there but they should go about their business in a more sanitary way.

  27. ba LT people want to be given hope they don’t want to see the dust and dirt.Could you employ someone to water the grass before you take pictures before some bloggers go on Prozac! They don’t want to accept reality – its October for goodness sake Zambia is dry right now or have you been away that long!

  28. Pics 1 and 2 are pretty disgusting. I hope the new soweto market will accomodate all these street butchers and vendors. I like the developement shots…makes me feel hopeful but not quite. LT, PLEASE SHOW US SOME OTHER NICER PICTURES ALSO. WE ALL KNOW ZAMBIA IS NOT THAT BAD IBN CERTAIN SPOTS. SO PLEAZE, WE BEG YOU TO SHOW SOME POSITIVE IMAGES AS WELL. MOST OF US ALREADY HAVE EXPERIENCED AND SEEN THE NASTINESS OF ZAMBIA. SPOIL US WITH SOME NICE PHOTOS PULLLLLLLIIIIIIIZEEEE TAPAPATA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  29. # 42, You must not have lived in Zed before. Yes, it looks very nasty now but, for the people back home, this is probably the cheapest meat they can get. So, sanitation is not a factor here my friend….insala pa zed ba kamba, kwishiba ka. In all honesty, it does look very gross! Yaba imwe ba LT, am about to have my lunch now and why did it have to be the first and second photos too? Damn damn damn!

  30. People while I agree we need positive images of our country, the truth is Zambia is dirty, not even a quality camera will change that. It’s all easy for authorities to remove street vendors from streets but if they cannot accommodate them in Soweto market they will go back. Projects like keep Zambia clean would go a long way. There is no excuse for the dirty.

  31. #46 Sanitation must always be a factor even though you are right that its probably not a poor person’s main concern. However, keep Zambia clean is not going a good job if we can all feel that its ok for mudala with sneakers on a table. Have you ever walked through any path ku zed? Uza dyaka matuvi ya muntu not imbwa. We can’t accept it, otherwise yours and my bululus will continue to be easy targets for cholera and the likes. Chamokwa kwati mwa elo mwa le ikalako ku zed mwali lyako na amafi ya kunsapato sha pali pic #2 tefyo. I know you don’t wish that for anyone so simple things like that strongly discouraged through keep zed clean campains. Nakana.

  33. #44 awe shuwa I will need to go on Prozac or some other kind of anti depressant when I go to Zed in Feb 10. Because ichi konko will kill meeee.

  34. 15. taly,

” this is depressing, please don’t only show us the bad pictures ,we get that already from world media, atleast promote the positive side for a change. ”

I agree. Anyone can show a poor image of any city, no matter how bad it is. What the LT needs to consider is that they’re not working for an NGO, and that they are not holding out a begging bowl.

Why would anyone want to invest in a place that even it’s inhabitants and politicians don’t care about?

When you think of ‘London’, do you think of The City, Buckingham Palace, doubledecker buses and shops? Or do you think of the worst council estates, or the East End?

Time for some civic pride on behalf of the LT, I’m sorry to say.

  35. Try to ask Health inspectors why they don’t do their work, the answer would be something like ” oh no transport, no donor funding”. One wonders why they even get paid whatever they are paid beacause the only time they would swing into action is when they are sent to fix MMD enemies. Last night i was watching ‘ race and intelligence” on BBC 1, i didn’ agree with most of the scientists but sometimes i feel there’s something wrong with us. NOTHING WORKS IN OUR COUNTRY.

  36. NOSTALGIA, NOSTALGIA. thanks for the walk of horror, LT. Keep it up on a weekly basis. What place is that at photo # 7? Anybody know? Also, can we see the soccer heroes cemetery at Independence? Or is it just bush and grass and duest all over?

  37. Vinthu Vina Mwebanthu,

” I think the “make Zambian Green” suggested project is good for a business venture. If you wanna cash in on government, just start it. ”

What is the level of air and ground pollution in Lusaka? I agree there seems to be a lot of room for greening the city – which would help mitigate climate too. Trees would help lower temperatures and conserve water. Also, you can put *water crystals* in the soil that conserve water for plants. And basic groundcover like grass (or even straw) will conserve soil moisture.

  38. # 44 – Nicole, what kind of media philosophy do you subscribe to? The Press According to St. Rupiah, the failure? W’a swabisa, wena, man!

  39. #53 continued
I said there must something wrong with us because here i am condemning others, tomorrow put me in charge of Health at Lusaka City Council chances are that i will change to blend in and start lining my pockets. We seem to set our priorities upside down, really we need a messiah to come and sort out the cobwebs.
THANKS LT FOR THE PICTURES, AT LEAST YOU ARE A SILVER LINING.

  40. mala msana wandalama, ” Last night i was watching ‘ race and intelligence” on BBC 1 ” I did not see that program, but anyone who tries to correlate race and intelligence is stupid, because there is no such thing as race among modern humans. Dr. Richard Lewontin pretty much proved that doing blood type studies back in the 1970s, and the Human Genome Project pretty much drove the stake into that theory. There is not enough genetic diversity among modern humans (6%-8%) to speak of races or sub-species (20%-25%).

Racism exists of course, but using ‘race’ as an explanatory factor is always a copout, so the reviewer doesn’t need to look at other factors – culture, psychology, history, economics – in other words, the actual context of event and people’s actions.

  41. Ba Clorox # 48 and 49, I agree with you that sanitation should be key. But lets be real here…this is Zed, where the cousin of malnutrition (insala) lives. People do not care man, you and I both know this. When I think back to my younger years when coming out of Valez night club, we would go to the town center and eat ka bwali at 5 or 6 in the morning. I swear, if you saw the dishes they couldn’t that nshima and the relish even the ka grill they used to “braii” the michopo, man that was pretty nasty. But guess what, it tasted better than some of the food at my home and we used to eat the hell out of it. Honestly, it’s a wonder I never ever got sick from that town center food- NOT one day my friend. Now I don’t think I could do it if I went to Zed…thanks to LT. Ba mambala imwe!

  42. Filthy, filthy. We cannot cut corners when it comes to sanitation. No wonder that we still have outbreaks of cholera, and diseases like polio are making a come back. Poverty must never be an excuse for uncleanliness.

  43. #3. My Son will for the first time visit his homeland Zed, For X-Mas. Tute ne Mbalala that will be something, ha ha. After 13 years of Pancakes and Marple, Don’t ask me How he’s gonna react, Yack! Belive me he will try.
#9. Waiting for the pressure to drop, Eh, ha ha. I will never forget my Native Land. Ilyo Kaunda aletuteka, ta twalechula ngefi!
#5. Toiling for Freedoms sake, under Zedian skies “Sicle Cell Anemiea” guranteed.

  44. mala msana wandalama
No# 53 and 57. The Messiah has been to the mother land once before, remember it saved him from Harod and the homosexual Romans. Botswana is a great example of what can happen if we remember we were once kings and queens. We started civilisation BBC and those scientists had that program for a reason. I love being African especially one that knows his Kingly pharoah Timbuktu wise origins. That Solomon genetic line, we are the greatestthreat to the white race in their minds even when we are just peace loving too friendly at times people. Just love Jesus my Zambian family and work ever hard. Love your wives too, Ma flowers naka kiss bana Banda, milupi and hamaudu need love aswell.

  45. Hmm Buti zo ona kuli ka kungu..You can’t even wear nice shoes nishi wambuwa..But I still miss home even with all that.

  46. Those chaps who sell their merchandise in the middle of the road – are they still on the roads with the removal of street vendors?

  47. Dear LT bloggers, time for a young man to step back for a while and get a clearer view. Continue my lovely ladies and wise brethren in commenting and increasing the knowledge and wisdom. Sundays defend the honour of our Lord Jesus Christ with continous alertness, hahahaha infact do that everyday. Maybe you are wondering, yeah you brother is working on his thesis and I have less time. Back in a few month God’s blessings, prayers and peace I am out; word is bond.

  48. i miss home. i dont care how dusty or dirty i still miss home. i miss drinking chibuku and eating either chikanda or vimbombo pa tarven. all i can say is east or west home is best

  49. ok i love home, but seriously, clean up the place!!! i always say, poverty does not equate filth. have we no pride in our environment??? what the heck are the councils there for??? isn’t that supposed to be part of their job to make sure that the city is at least presentable? awe sure

  50. Thank you for sharing these humbling images,we need to put our house in order, the comments of some bloggers display immaturity,it is heartbreaking that 45yrs people, zambia is regarded as one of the poorest countries on earth!!The only people who will fix this is us Zambians,no one else!Investors come with glassy eyes, they chew Zambia like a thirsty man chews sugarcane and suck the sweet, and spit out the fibre,we wonder why, there is somthing critically wrong with Zambia,in our thoughts, the way we conduct ourselves, our outlook,do we even think of the future,do the leaders talk about the future?are we living for the second?DO WE EVEN SLEEP AT NIGHT,WERE EVER WE ARE WITH THESE IMAGES? Again Lusaka Times i appreciate your candour in showing this,i just hope you do a round up of the country..

  51. Awe no matter what i still love my hunger stricken nation am Zambian inside out. We need to do something about our beloved country us as zambians
