LCC warns operators of unregistered taxies

Share

Lusaka City Council (LCC) says the council with soon conduct an exercise to remove all unregistered taxies and non functional vehicle packed at the police stations.

LCC Public relations Officer Henry Kapata said the council is working on the impound yard where all the vehicles impounded will be taken and then charge the owners for dumping their vehicles at the police station.

Mr. Kapata told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today that the council will also impound all unregistered taxies as they do not pay anything to the local authority.

He said the move would also help to de-congest the city.

Mr. Kapata disclosed that recently the council held a meeting with some stakeholders, the Ministry of Justice, Zambia Police and Road traffic and Safety Agency to strategize on how best to address issues related to congestion.

He said the council will not hesitate to charge people parking their vehicles unnecessarily especially in busy and undesignated places.

And Mr. Kapata has expressed concern on the tendency by some bus drivers to park thir buses at bus stops in the city.

He added that the council was not happy with congestions created by bus drivers and other motorists who park their vehicles at bus stops.

He explained that bus stops should only be used as dropping points not for loading.

Mr. Kapata observed that knowledge was lacking among the drivers as they do not know the difference between bus stops and bus stations.

He appealed to bus operators to help the council by educating their drivers on the need to observe rules and regulations when servicing the travelling public.

He has since appealed to the Road Traffic and Safety Agency (RTSA) to help the council by apprehending drivers who congest bus stops.

  1. Reg taxi takes the following: The owner to buy driver uniform (light blue shirt and navy blue trousers); panting the car is costly; monthly payments to ZRA; daily payments to the council; need to buy first Aid kit; need buy fire extinguisher; payment every 3 months for renewal of public transport license (attend interviews each time of renewal), if you are lucky u can get a one year one (but difficult to get); difficult to get comprehensive insurance for registered taxi; once registered drivers are full-time hence need to tax their salary and remit to ZRA and NAPSA; difficult to sale a once registered taxi. This is addition to normal road license payments for each quarter; road fitness and insurance. these are some of the disincentives for reg. considering the low daily cashing of k100pin

  2. continued- other disadvantages the some of us do not want to book a registered taxi; a registered taxi cannot operate outside designated township area (no long distance bookings); the drivers for registered taxi also require PSV drivers license (difficult to obtain and can only be given to 25yrs and above cutting out a lot of the youth). However, there is only one advantage to an individual that is increased (not removal of) security of car from being stolen. Then advantage to govt. is orderliness and more revenue.
