THE GOVERNMENT has earmarked to transform the Chirundu Road to a dual-carriage way in anticipation of increased traffic that will follow the commissioning of the Chirundu One Stop Border post (OSBP) tomorrow.
The implementation of the Chirundu OSBP is one of the important milestones in trade facilitation agenda of the region and would contribute significantly to making the North South Corridor a more efficient regional route.
Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister Felix Mutati said the Government would next year focus on upgrading the Chirundu road to support the increased traffic as a result of speedy and efficient operations of the border post.
In an interview from Switzerland, Mr Mutati said the Chirundu Road was one of Zambia’s important trade routes and delays at the Chirundu Border would now fall by between 30 and 50 per cent.
He said there was need to focus on developing infrastructure that would support the growth of the economy.

Actions speak louder than words & it is easier said than done. I believe this road will not be there come 2020, just like we have feed with lies over the Kitwe- Chingola dual carriage way. BOMBENI ELIO MULANDE
i think the chingola kitwe road is more a priority than the chirundu
That is the reason why I like RB’s Government because it is action oriented.
Last year we head about chingola – kitwe road to Date nothing has been done; too much talking and promising for nothing. Do something then talk
#1 PF/UPND naibabika mu panic. Na meeting ya mfumu shaku Southern Province nayo nabalwalika ukupolomya. But, they are going come 2011, anyway. Tukesacita implement fyonse fyo balesabaila fye.
…People, read the Post about the Southern Province chiefs meeting. I don’t know where it leave our Chiti Mukulu. Ba muteya baller abanankwe.
well any normal thinking person would upgrade the road before commisioning a one stop border post hence increasing traffick………this wat we call foresight.Otherwise they are jus moving the congestion at the border post into the road….i can imagine the number of accidents we are going to see on that small poorly constructed thirdworld road.
#4. What is true is that the designs and EIA report for the Kitwe Chingola dual carriageway rd are almost ready if not ready. Next stage is to mobilise the required funds and the procurement of a Contractor. Its just that these issues consume time but progress is there. Of course what everyone will appreciate is to see machinery moving on site. Am optimistic.
Oh and Govt has advertised to do the Chingola – Kitwe under a public private partnership
