Livingstone Member of Parliament (MP) Sakwiba Sikota has implored government to expedite the upgrading of one of the tertiary institutions into a university in the tourist capital.

Mr. Sikota lamented the Livingstone is only city in the country that does not have a higher learning institution.

He however said he is personally facilitating and working hand in hand with government through the Ministry of Education to speed up the expansion programme of a named college in Livingstone so that it is transformed into a university.

Mr. Sikota was speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today.

Meanwhile, Mr. Sikota has disclosed that government through the Ministry of Health has opened an Intensive Care Unit (ICT) at Livingstone General Hospital (LGH)

Mr. Sikota, who is also United Liberal Party (ULP) president, commended government for the initiative saying patients, who were previously referred to other hospitals in Choma and Lusaka would now be treated in Livingstone.

He added that the move to establish an ICU at Livingstone General Hospital has lessened medical cover costs requested by insurance companies when patients are referred to other health institutions.

And Mr. Sikota has disclosed that there were plans to put up modern infrastructure at the Livingstone Intercity Bus Terminus and the Maramba market.

He said this will be done through the Public Private Partnership, (PPP).

He said these initiatives are being spearheaded by an adhoc Committee of the PPP under the Livingstone Municipal Council.

  1. Yes, Nine Chale is a down to earth blogger. I wish Veteran, Capitalist, Inshimbi, Mulenga and myself can invoke such wisdom.

  2. This morning, somebody on BBC radio was saying that Livingstone has the largest number of b.r.o.t.h.e.l.s in Zambia which masquerade as guest houses. Apparently these are for the delectation of foreign tourists. Given that Evelyn Hone college has problems with student p.r.o.s.t.i.t.u.t.i.o.n, are we creating another centre of ill repute in Livingstone? Sorry for being negative.

  3. Private initiatives in establishment of Universities should be seriously be considered and government should only be concerned with standards oversight.

If new private Universities were established, it would be a very good yardstick for the economy as well as a good source of skills necessary for further economic development.

  4. What is Mr. Sikota talking about? Isn’t there a private university in Livingstone that will be enrollling students in 2010. I believe it is called VICTORIA FALLS UNIVERSITY and it’s main goals will be in ICT and Engineering.

    Here is an excerpt.

[LUSAKA] Zambia’s first private university for science and technology will open in July, while the country’s state-run university faces problems due to a lack of government support.

I thank you for your suggestion but I don’t think I want to be a down to earth blogger. I like to think I am a Factual blogger and if I am, I most definitely would love to remain that way.

  6. #10 Experience has shown that private institutions of learning (Zambian style) do not provide legitimate, accredited papers. May be that is why SS does not consider VFUT to be a legitimate institution. As far as I know, it is only UCB and UNZA which are recognised in Europe and North America.

  7. What university is Sikota talking about? There is already a university in Livingstone which has started enrolling for 2010. I really wonder as to whether Sikota knows what is happening in Livingstone. This man is a let down, he has never done anything in his life which has ever succeded. He has abandoned ULP members to join MMD, he is now Director Public procecution. He was left to act as president of the party(UPND) when Mazoka was in South Africa for treatment when started making arrangement with Mwanawasa to make a pact with MMD. Livingstone has gone down under his poor ten years leadership, Livingstone General hospital was one of the best in zambia but standards have gone down because of his failures. Shame on this man he just wants bread and butter.

  8. Personally I will never believe Sikota due to his life of Gold digging. He is such a cheap man thats why Sata chased him from that pact they formed back in 2006. Once you realise his cheap life you cannot deal with him. Private Universities are not recognised in Zambia because our Governments politicise anything. These private universities add value to the development of Education in these developed countries such as South Africa, USA, and even Egypt. The best university in Egypt is American university which is private though they have many local ones. It is the Zambian Government to advertise and register these universities Internationally.

  9. The University of Zambia degrees are hardly being recognized and we are already talking about more universities! To start with it is very difficult to find people to teach in universities all over the world. Even the best universities in Europe have teachers that are not up to scratch. I would instead propose that this institution provide vocational skills. This country needs more technicians, welders, boiler makers, carpenters, Farmers etc. People that can easily set up their own businesses after completing. Zimbabwe has more of these people than we do. If you can remember back i the days all the good carpenters, mechanics, welders were from Zimbabwe.
We can then help CBU and UNZA attain world standards because they are doing badly even in Africa. The last time I checked UNZA was…

  10. #7 Kwathukumawa, how are you man. Mambala, where have you been hiding? Send me an e-mail. I just finished grading some papers. At least next wk I will be free. Let me know when to call you.

  11. GUYZ, IS THIS REALLY A TOURIST CAPITAL? CAN’T THE GVT DO SOMETHING TO MAKE LIVINGSTONE BEAUTIFUL AND CLEAN. THIS IS A RAIN SEASON. BUT, THE TOWN LOOKS SO DUSTY EVEN ON PICTURE. But, is it surprising that Livingstone has a large share of ci cake cha ma brothels? there are no jobs in the country but a lot of starvation. Apparently, prosti.tution business is easier to start up as theres no (or very little) investment capital. And most of the raw material and processing plant is owned by the investor herself/himself.

  12. Does Zambia lack enough Universities? Do we have enough incomes to sustain students in these Universities? Granted it is a global village, but are we now diversifying into serious export of Human capital?

  13. “… a named college in Livingstone …”
What kind of news/reporting is this? Ba LT give us the name of the college PLEASE!

Shani chilumendo? I had caught up with flu and was down for 2 good weeks. I am now up and about. How are you? You can call me any time as I will only be getting back to work on 21st Dec.

    Ntusheko.

  15. Mr. Capitalist
Have you been to this Victoria Falls university you are talking of. The infrastructure looks like that of a rural basic school. I was there and I concluded somebody just wants to make cool cash out of unsuspecting would be students. It is next to LIBES on Nakatindi road.

  16. Guys you dont know what you are talking about. The building is in poor state and this is the LIBES.That is not a true development, but just an improvement

  17. Chansa how can you tell such lies that Sikota is now the Director of Public Prosecution? You obviously do not know what you are talking about. When was Mchenga replaced? It seems you are consumed with bitterness and nothing else. I also seem to remember that ata got annoyed soon after the 2006 elections when Sikota stated that he would be standing for President in 2011. As for the idea of a good university with good standards in Livingstone only the likes of Chansa can fail to appreciate this.
