Zain offices in Chipata briefly closed for law-breaking

The Chipata Municipal Council in Eastern Province yesterday closed Zain Centre offices for about five hours for contravening the Environment Protection and Pollution Control Act.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS, acting Chipata Town Clerk, Andrew Zulu, said that the Zain centre had breached the law by disposing of refuse within their premises, and practiced open air burning of refuse, which was against the Local Government Act Cap 281.

Mr Zulu said that the office had also breached the law by obstructing an authorized public health officer by not being co-operative to him during his duty.

He said that his office would ensure that the centre puts up necessary disposal facility and clean the refuse and ash from the burning point.

“As the council, we moved in this morning to close the offices because the mobile phone service provider has breached the law which is under the Environmental Protection and Pollution Control Act and the Local Government Act Cap 281,” Mr Zulu said.

The acting Town Clerk stated that the office has also paid a penalty fee of K450,000 for doing what may be dangerous and offensive to human life.

Mr Zulu has since urged officers at Zain offices to always co-operate with public health officers to allow them be educated on health matters as it was the primary area of their service delivery.

The mobile phone service privider has been given 14 days to put things in order, failure to which it would attract legal proceedings.

And Mr Zulu has since urged residents in the district to ensure that they put up disposal facilities and clean the refuse to keep chipata clean.

Efforts to get a comment from Zain management proved futile.

  1. Please zambians, see the type of leader you want to have in the name of sata see how he behaved on that international program, so thugerly for a leader,The PF leader, who stormed out of the programme twice and openly attacked co –guest Sharon Freeman, president and founder of All American Small Business Exporters Association for supporting Chinese investment, charged that China was engaged in modern slavery as it was out to rape Africa of its resources.
Please yes change is good, but change should make alot more sense, I would rather we stick to mmd at least they listern when pushed to the corner, I am PF but i was left with no good words for my leader in the manner he behaved on that international forum

  2. # 1 you don’t have to plead with the people, we will make our own choice besides we are reading about zain on this space. give us a break!

  3. #1 kuku,it just doesnt make any sence in your posting..Mr Zulu here is talking abt hw zain has breached the pollution act, then there u go..u start talking abt SATA..like STREET DADDY has said..u dnt even need to tell us abt the type of leaders we want,we shall make our own choice..its a democracy.and jst to add up to the topic at hand,i hope zain complys with the local council..because thats the law.

  4. I think Kuku’s brain is misplaced. Your contribution will not make pipo charge their mindset. Lets just talk about Zain and forget. Your contribution should fall under straight talk africa.

  5. Zo honestly Kuku naiwe, what’s up with bringing politics to every thread? Plus we have a mind of our own so leave us alone to vote for Sata – the only one who speaks our mind. I would advise you to go and listen to “Ubuntungwa” by the late Keith Mlevu (RIP) especially the line which says:
“nomba mune we mwina Zambia wishitisha icalo
enga wamona umulwani ayisa na ulupiya ulwingi…”

Wamona nomba ka Kuku, you even made me forget my piece of contribution to the story at hand…let me press rewind and come again.

  6. #1 tht is B*llSh*t niawe you mean you cant even commend the council for what they have done iwe busy with Sata issues. Please learn to draw a line in everything you do. there are limits to everything. Viva Chipata council atleast you are working. dont spare them just because they have invested in Zed.

  7. Well, it’s about Kuku, wots up with you, dude? That is so like gone, we participated, where the hell were you?
Ya naine nalaba, oh….. it’s about Zain. Judging from their logo, they look like witches and wizards, how do you have black and magenta for a company color? Bad things happen in these companies and the owners. The whole thing gives me hibby jabba jibbies!!!!

  8. Thats what I call working not these other councils who just full of hot air and the furthest they can go i to issue useless threats.Zain observe the law and be slapped more fine.Mr Zulu consider hiking the penalty fee so that its more punitive.

  10. I think we should ask Andrew Zulu what his hidden agenda really was…..
I was passing when it happened and the ‘burning’ was being done at the shop next door and the man was acting so suspicious like a kid about to steal candy from the jar
Mr Zulu, ulula fella. U wanted a T-shirt ka?
