Northern Province Minister John Chinyanta has expressed disappointment at the poor workmanship on the construction of a boarding High School in Mpulungu by a Chinese contractor.
Mr. Chinyanta said it was unacceptable for government to spend K28 billion to construct a school of poor standard.
He urged the Chinese contractor Hua Jiang to improve the workmanship on the school project or risk government terminating the contract.
Mr. Chinyanta said while people in Mpulungu were excited with the construction of the Boarding High School in their District, the performance by the contractor on the project was not satisfactory.
The Minister charged that he would not tolerate misuse of public funds on capital projects aimed at benefitting people especially those in rural areas through shoddy works.
Mr. Chinyanta also warned the Chinese contractor against abusing local workers through paying poor wages.
He further urged Mpulungu District Commissioner Willie Simfukwe to strictly monitor the performance of the Chinese contractor working on the Boarding School project to avoid poor workmanship.
Recently, a staff house at Mpulungu Boarding High School was demolished due to shoddy works by the contractor.
So far government has spent K4.4 billion on the school project.
Meanwhile, Mr. Chinyanta has commended another Chinese contractor constructing Mpulungu District hospital for doing a good job on the project.
He said the contractor working under Hua Jiang has performed extremely well in construction works at the hospital.
Mr. Chinyanta revealed that government would grant the same contractor another contract to carry out phase two of the construction of the District hospital.

it makes a sad reading with what is happening with the project entrusted to be executed by the chinese. No disrepect to the chinese, with the experience l have had with the chinese they are very hard working and they can deliver a high rate quality product under close monitoring by a competent and honest consultant. In short what l’m trying to say is it does not need the minister who is a very busy man to monitor the performance of the contractors and yet there is a consultant who has been speciallly appointed to supervise the contractor. Mr minister if l were you l would question the consultant’s integrity before having a serious word with the contractor. Please be informed zambia is not a country that accepts low quality products thats tax payers money someone is playing with again.
Some chinese ar thievs but som ar gud, let us be told the gud side of these chaps as well coz all we read is the bad side of a china man. Even us we hav a very bad side as well
Mumpuwelwa and Mwine: I agree with you. LT are these HUA JANGs building the school and the hospital the same?
I WAS SHOCKED AT WHAT I SAW IN MANSA AT GVT REST HOUSE BUILDING WHERE THE CHINESE ARE BUILDING 2 STRUCTURES-THE conference hall and bar, and the dining hall. Its unbelievable how many serious cracks the buildings are engulfed with, starting right from the foundation whole round the buildings. What perplexes me is how the quality control people passed those structures. You don’t need to be a structural engineer to see the terrible cracks.
I think these are the kind of Chinese that Sata talks about,
When Sata talks about such you label him all sorts of names and yet this is a deputy minister appointed by rupiah complaining about shoddy chinaman work. let me tell you, the chinese that built tazara, tazama, most national milling plants, united milling company in chingola, mulungushi textiles, were very gud and genuine but the current ones are mostly crooks. Sata is talking about such and hear him correctly.
Thank you # 6, you put it correctly,
you should take a look at the buildings in kamwala, its a sorry site
Is Sata being vindicated or what? so what is chizyuka talking about. The chinese may be good in some countries but they have chosen substandards for our country.
I think our government thinks every chines is good at building when they look at their facial structure. Does it mean we Zambians can’t build schools unless the hand of a chines. Woke-up govt instead of giving tenders to the local people you then give foreigners and then what does this imply in our country? No wonder they get advantage of this country foreigners.
Funny. All those condeming SATA are even afriad to blog. Where are they? I’d like to hear there views on this issue.
It makes such a sad reading to hear how a government can trust other nationals to carry out important national projects instead of local zambians. It seems the chinese nationals have won the hearts of those responsible for giving tenders to the extent that, no matter how poor the workmanship, to them it is nothing. Wake up zambian government and do right to your citizens
