The Committee of Citizens has joined other civil society organizations in condemning the calls by the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) for the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Chalwe Mchenga to resign.
Committee Executive Director Gregory Chifire says the call by LAZ is partisan and likely to bring anarchy to the legal profession.
Mr. Chifire told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today, that LAZ is an important institution that should always be associated with restoring sanity and order among the people through good interpretation of the law.
He noted that there are a lot of serious matters that LAZ should concentrate on than being a mouth piece for opposition political parties.
He said LAZ should pay attention to issues like the Nation Constitution Conference (NCC) and ensure that it provides guidance and advice to the people on the ongoing deliberations.
Mr. Chifire charged that the recent remarks by LAZ President Stephen Lungu are a clear indication that the organization has lost track and has instead resorted to politicking.
He has further advised LAZ to stop using the media whenever they want to confront members.
Mr. Chifire said it was saddening that the Association had chosen to call for the resignation of the DPP through the media instead of finding a mature way of advising him.
DPP Chalwe Mchenga has come under fire from both LAZ and some opposition political parties who are calling for his resignation for alleged having failed to operate in an independent manner.
On Sunday, Vice President George Kunda said the accusations against constitutional office holders such as the DPP by the opposition and LAZ are in an effort to weaken Government.
Mr. Kunda further accused the LAZ council of supporting a named opposition political party.

What is this committee of Citizens and who do they represent. What is their objective and does it command consesus of us all or just a representation of one person in the name of Executive Director Gregory Chifire. As a citizen I know nothing about it.
We know this ka cifire he is a hired gun .With his briefcase NGO busy receiving brown envelopes to issue wild sttements. They are friends with siulapwa that con artist, iam surprised they have not issued a joint statement.Or the strategy is to issue them at different times to make it appear as though alot of organisations are against LAZ.What i fail to understand is if the letter written by LAZ was adressed to the AG, why is it that its the government and their briefcase NGOS that responding and not the AG.Where is the separation of powers here if matters directed to the judiciary to act on are being handled by the executive in the media. Are we not just confirming the fears that LAZ raised in their letter to the AG.
Here we go again with the MMD sponsored NGOs! Why should the Govt be wasting so much money paying these useless organisations to sing praises for it when it is put under pressure? Mr Chifire how long has your organisation being in existence? well you will find it hard to believe that I am hearing your organisation for the first time.
Greg………. you are up to your old ways. Another pre-election strategy for you & your mates for 2011 or maybe even sooner???????????
Oh well……. Akashita kaya kalepalama. All in good time
Between so Chabe #2 and Gregory Chifire, I see a lot of sense in the former. Spot on So Chabe, you are the man and you sound so sensible with your well reasoned thourghts. Between Steven Lungu and Gregory Chifire, The former stands out, no wonder he made it as LAZ President.
This chap Gregory Chifire was not too long ago selling veggies at CBU and now he thinks he has enough sense to speak for the intelligent 12 million zambians. I wonder if Ba MMD think we can easily be taken in by a brainless chap like Greg Chifire. Give us a break please!
